Happy new season, everyone! Tommy is flying solo this week to look back on an exciting opening weekend of the NPLWA - Men's competition as he delves into Saturday's five game slate and has a couple of observations from Friday's season opener at Frank Drago Reserve. Tommy then reflects on the Armadale versus Floreat goalless draw which he watched Sunday morning on x2 speed and saw one of the unluckiest misses of all time. There's a brief look at the 1-1 draw between Knights and RedStar, while there was several encouraging signs for Bayswater as they picked up a late 2-1 win over Night Series winners Sorrento FC on Friday. Remember to share us, like, rate, and review the podcast on Apple, Spotify, Google wherever you get your podcasts. We really do appreciate all your support whether you've been with us from the very start or you're jumping on board with the pod for the first time in 2025. TD has the goods, breaking down the ins and outs of the 12 clubs tackling for the title – and a spot in the new Australian Championship – with round one just around the corner. We ask are Bayswater City Spurs and Perth SC Manchester United (but with a better stadium being constructed)? Can Armadale lose the title of the entertainers, have we all learnt our lessons about the preseason when it comes to Balcatta and Floreat Athena and can Sorrento follow the trend of promoted teams making the top four? There's a new dawn for the Perth Glory and Fremantle City while Knights have loaded up on firepower at the front and for some strange reason we reckon it's a three team race this year! We also reveal our Enhance Health Group Enhancer of the Match from last week's State League and NPL Men's Night Series finals and preview the always spicy Balcatta-Perth clash in Friday's NPL Women's Night Series final.

The season may be over but we still have more Casual Football Chats to give you listeners! We finally managed to catch them in between taking photos and editing photos to chat about her journey from taking photos in the local park to capturing NPL Cup finals, iconic backflips and taking pictures at the Fifa World Cup. Cat has become a fixture in our footballing community and has been able to capture our local game and our community in so many ways. Going through her profile tells not only the story of seasons just gone, but moments we can all share and refer to as she documents the many ways football can bring us together and the many emotions we feel in the process. In this chat, we talk about Cat growing up in London and running behind (I want to say alongside) footballers from Crystal Place and the sense of community she felt attending games. It was that sense of community that she longed for and managed to find when she moved to Australia and found herself keen to help out in what ever way possible. We talk the process of turning an interest into a hobby and a hobby into an obsession that is filled with highs and lows and we also pay homage to some of the teams and individuals that have made the process as easy as possible. We are lucky to have Cat in our game and giving up so much time to capture all the highs and lows of our game. The season may be over but we still have more Casual Football Chats to give you listeners! In a very special episode we speak to one of the faces of The Casual Football Co in Andy Barrett. One of the Sunday League regulars, Andy tells us the story of coming to Perth from the UK and finding a community in Melville. He talks about coaching children through his time with Jungle Sports and collaboration with the Perth Glory and how he's imparting that knowledge now as he coaches his own children. We also talk more about the connections to the community that come from Backpackers FC - the club and the business that has seen itself become the Casual Football Co, before some shameless plugs about him being a Quizard! You can tell from listening to Andy that Family, Football and Community are really at the forefront of his mind and we are lucky to have people like him and the Casual Football Co here in Perth. Hey everyone - I thought we would sneak this in as a Casual Football Chat episode - We sat down with Max from WA Football Interviews to talk about all things NPLM/NPLW in WA and his love for the Perth Glory. Max is a young up-and-coming journalist with a passion for the game and knowledge and a memory that will put Tommy Doleman to shame! We spoke to him about his rise, interviews, and goals for his coverage and we even asked him who he thinks were the best players in the NPL this year. In Part Two, we have interviews with our award winners, and you'll have to forgive us, listeners. We recorded the chats over the phone using some new technology, and the sound is a little faint, so you'll have to focus and concentrate a little more. Huge congratulations to all the winners and thank you so much to Max for taking the time to speak to us. The season may be over but we still have five more Casual Football Chats to give you listeners! In a very special and extended episode we se speak to Morley Windmills head coach, and former Belt Up Cup winning coach John O'Reilly. One of the biggest supporters of our podcast, John tells the story of growing English and Irish in the “Garden of England” and talks about his coaching journey that took him from England to Ireland and then finally to Perth. We talk about the evolution of football and his style of play with him drawing inspiration from the likes of Terry Butcher, Diego Simone and Arrigo Sacchi. John's always had a desire for coaching and that desire has seen him come full circle here in Perth with his return to Morley Windmills. We go over his coaching journey talking about his rise from Amateurs through to the NPL with spells at Ashfield, Swan, Shamrock Rovers and Armadale. We talk about the lows and the highs with the Belt Up State Cup win the cherry on a terrific coaching cake. Just when it's time to stop we push on and get John to name a dream 11 of NPL that he'd love to coach or has had the pleasure of coaching and John puts a sneaky recommendation for the Perth Glory. Raised in Birkenhead on a diet of Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers, a hip problem seemingly stalled Sean D'Arcy's football journey before it started. But a move to Perth opened doors he never imagined, carving out a three decade career as a freestyler and junior coach that took him from juggling at the Sydney Olympics to helping lay the foundations for some of WA's best young footballers. In this special Casual Football Chat, Sean talks about his life, coaching philosophy and the training game played around world inspired by a current NPLWA player. The NPL season proper is over and what a season it was listeners! Tommy and Josh was at the Sam Kerr Football Centre to talk about the Perth RedStar doing the double with a quick interview from Caitlin Doeglas to boot. Josh is a late sub as Kelechi comes on to join Tommy in recapping the oh so dramatic Final that was full of nearly moments for Stirling Macedonia but saw Olympic Kingsway find away once again to come out 3-2 winners in dramatic fashion. To wrap up, we are joined by Olympic Kingsway head coach David Tough to talk about the season that was and writing the clubs name into the history books.
Tommy and Kelechi do a quick wrap up of the NPLW - Top 4 Cup Semi Finals. Tommy was at Home Group Stadium to see Balcatta Etna go through on penalties over Fremantle City while Kelechi was watching from home and saw Perth SC book a place in the Final winning on penalties against Perth RedStar.
It was a bumper weekend of football so naturally we had a bumper podcast to boot! In part 1 we have UWA - Nedland midfielder and 2x Reserves State Cup Winner Louis Carlish join us to talk about the game and a huge win for UWA. Tommy sits down during his lunch break and has a great interview with Perth SC U18 coach Basil Lenzo to talk about his side's 2-1 win over Perth RedStar. The guys (Tommy, Sean, Josh and Kelechi) then talk about the State Cup Final - where Sean found himself going through the dictionary to describe RedStar's performance. In Part 2 (42:30) we are joined by winning Women's State Cup champion Danielle Brogan to talk Perth SC's stunning 4-1 victory over RedStar and the season at large before we finish off with a tiny Top 4 preview for the Women's finals. There's sprinkler chat, goals from halfway, a naughty boy and a tribute to a Kalamunda/Maddington Legend.
We have a huge bumper podcast to wrap up up the NPLW season for you listeners. Tommy and NTC U21's coach Sam Geddes wrap up the weekend's action and do a bit of a deep dive into the season that was for all teams. They don't stop there listeners, they then do a preview of the State Cup Final between Perth RedStar and Perth SC before the two sides face off against each other in the Top-4 Cup Prelim Final. Huge thank you to Tommy and to Sam for their time in making this pod happen.
Katie Schubert Sabatini has seen it all, done it all and in a funny way has come full circle in her footballing career. From College soccer in West Virginia to A-League Football in Western Australia, Katie has been present for the growth of the women's game here in WA with the establishment of the NPLW, as well as being in the rarefied air of playing for the greatest Perth Glory team ever (men or women). She's won it all as a player, won some things as a mother and hers is a story of community and the creating of an unlikely career in WA. Enjoy this chat with Katie where we go through time and speak about a golden age in women's football here in Perth. Tommy and Kelechi were at the Kingsley Tavern to talk about the final weekend of the NPLM, NPLW and State League season. Kelechi was up at Chichester Reserve to see Kingsley Westside beat Cockburn City 2-1 and farewell coach Steven Dimitrovich off in style. We spoke to him about his time at the club. Tommy was at Kingsway to see Olympic Kingsway crowned champions and put on a heart of the champions display that saw them end the season unbeaten at home in the league. We also have Sean watching from home and his gives his summary of the Fremantle City and Floreat game that saw a late late finish from their WonderBoi
It's a little later than usual, but like Mrs Osunwa always says.... good news is never late! Tommy and Kelechi catch up on all the action from the weekend that saw soooo many terrific goals that FW had to extend their options for goals for the round! We talk about the cracking 3-3 between the champions and Balcatta and ask if Balcatta are playing themselves into some terrific form. We talk quickly gloss over Perth's 5-0 win over MUM FC but pay some much due credit to some of the best free-kick takers in the league. We talk about Subiaco doing the full Subiaco in their 3-7 loss to the NTC - they were terrific between the two boxes and frustrating inside them. We praise the NTC for turning it on and showing moments of quality to score 3 cracking goals in 7 minutes. We then talk UWA giving themselves a huge lifeline before this weekend with an important 0-0 against Fremantle before rounding off the fixtures with Perth's catch up game against the NTC where once again we saw some cracking goals.
Sean, after the lads failed a late fitness test was the only one free to be joined by Malcom Tshuma from Balcatta Etna and Zack Morgan from Armadale to talk their season. We talk their goals and aspirations at the start of the year and where to from now for both clubs. In part 2 Tommy, Sean and Kelechi were down (up) at Olympic Kingsway to witness history as the Green Machine stole the hearts of the state.
What a wild wild round of fixtures in the NPL! While the matches were wild, they've ended up rounding out the league season with all the major issues sorted. Kingsway are champions - Pete Jacobsz loves to score goals - Fremantle finish their first season in the NPL in the Top-4 - Darryl Nicol is pretty good - and Inglewood are no longer in the top flight of WA football. Steven Nelkovski joined the boys to talk what Kingsway wining the league means to him as a club president, and also boyhood fan and the boys had tenders and chips! Football was the winner.
From Glasgow to Freo, Sherif Andrawes has had an unlikely path to prominence in the world game. A mover and shaker in Perth's corporate world, Andrawes is best known as the chairman of Football West. But less well known is his work in the background where he has coached unbroken for over 25 years at his beloved East Fremantle Tricolore and Fremantle City. Josh Chiat caught up with Sherif this month in Kalgoorlie to discuss his remarkable journey and the passion that drives him to give back to WA football. The good people of Bayswater City were gracious enough to invite Kelechi and GFOP Michael Hoy down to Frank Drago Reserve to be part of a panel and chat about their 2013 and 2014 sides. It was terrific to go down memory lane and speak to the players, officials and actual life long boyhood fans of the club, about what really was a magical time for them and for Football in WA. Enjoy.
There were postponements across the grounds but nothing could postpone a Rampant RedStar from reclaiming their throne at the top of Football in the NPLW. Josh was up down at Hilton Park to talk all about it and spoke to RedStar Head coach Carlos Vega Mena about the mentality and humbleness of his side. Sean was also down at the Fremantle for their Pride round and spoke to Ginger Cain (founder of the Pride committee) about the club being a welcoming place for everyone. Josh was also able to get an exclusive interview with new Perth Glory signing and Fremantle City Striker (yes they take about Kalgoorlie) before Tommy wrapped up the Balcatta Subiaco game which saw a couple new faces in Blue and Red.
The football may have been postponed but there is no postponing the Perth Football Podcast! Sean, Tommy, Josh and Kelechi give kudos to Perth RedStar who wrapped up the league in the NPLW before giving kudos to the Men's team who kept the league alive for another week after a late late winner at Nash Field. We talk about Perth SC and their huge win over Fremantle City that means that Perth Glory will need to win out all their games and hope Perth SC drop points in all of theirs in order to overtake them. The result also means that the door is open for Bayswater and Armadale to sneak in and get into the Top 4. Tommy was there to watch League leaders Olympic Kingsway almost win the league after a 2-0 win against Floreat Athena (who will play a huge role on who makes the top four) and gives us a wrap up of that before we make our votes for the Perth Football Podcast Player of the Season.
Rhiannon Hopkins is passionate about football. She's been involved in the game from a playing, administrative and health perspective and is the first (and only) woman to have a life membership at Kingsley Westside Football Club. In this chat we talk about her love of football and community, the vast difference in opportunities there are now for women in the game, some of the joys and fun that come with being a woman that contributes in the men's side of the game (and also some of the not so fun things). Rhiannon's passion for the game and for fairness is felt in this listen and the messages she speaks about are important one. 1. This game is for everyone and 2. Go out and help. Sean's back and it's the biggest podcast we've ever recorded! We touch on Floreat's huge win on and off the field and keeping their outside chance of the top 4 alive, Balcatta securing their NPL status with a huge draw at Stirling and question Stirling's form against the teams towards the bottom end of the table. We praise Perth RedStar for their win over the Perth Glory and have a chat about integrity in the league and if rules may need to be changed in the future. Then we are joined by one of our all time favourite personalities in the league - Jesse Lazzaro to talk Western Knights and that move from Cockburn to the Knights before he answers the hardest question ever... And if you though we were done after an hour and 11 minutes you are mistaken! We have a State League 1 wrap up by Alex Papalia. Told you it was a big one!
