Here's the thing nobody tells you before you go to the Amalfi Coast is it requires understanding of what you actually want from the experience before you go. Because the version you've seen on Instagram and the reality of being there are two very different things. We spent several days exploring the coast and made a choice that ended up defining our entire trip. Instead of staying in Positano or Sorrento like most people think they want to, we based ourselves in Atrani, a tiny town just around the corner from Amalfi that most people walk right past. And honestly, it changed everything. In this episode, we're getting into the real Amalfi Coast. The ferry logistics, the stairs, the beaches, the transportation. The smaller towns that might actually be a better fit than the famous names on every highlight reel. And what we'd do again without hesitation. If the Amalfi Coast is on your list, this episode is one you don't want to miss. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. While it can be amazing to stay right smack-dab in the middle of Sorrento, it can also come with unforeseen challenges. Likewise, staying just outside of Sorrento might be a quiet retreat from the hubbub, but it can also mean you don't get the experience you were hoping for. In this episode, we break down the various small towns around Sorrento and neighborhoods in Sorrento to help you figure out the best place to stay. As mentioned in the episode, our "comments" on Spotify have been a little strange. We've been getting notifications for comments, but they don't always appear. We're back! Today we're talking about Sorrento, which we had briefly started talking about two weeks ago. This episode focuses on how to catch the bus, things to keep in mind surrounding using the bus, our experience with using taxis, and, of course, food. While in the past we've normally tried not to give specific recommendations (mainly as we know that food can be highly subjective, and what we might love y'all might not), we do end this episode with a few recommendations for where to eat. As mentioned in the episode, our "comments" on Spotify have been a little strange. We've been getting notifications for comments, but they don't always appear. In this fifth episode exploring what it means to be second or third-generation Italian in New Zealand, Carla Rotondo talks to Salvatore Gargiulo, a retired school principal from Nelson. His grandfather came to NZ from Capo di Sorrento in 1920, joining other Italians he knew, in what is known as chain migration. Initially he worked in the fishing industry, and once settled he sent for his wife and his two older children. Salvatore's father, Vincenzo, was born in NZ in 1923, he went to war as NZ soldier in Italy part of the Allied Forces, fighting against the Italian regime. Returned from war he married a NZ woman and Salvatore was born in 1951. During Covid Salvatore spend many hours reading his father‘s war dairies to compile a book called Getting to know dad from his dairies. The war experience was very distressful for Vince and he never went back to Italy. The Gargiulo family was part of the Nelson Italian community, and now Salvatore is the vice-president of the Club Italia. Last month, our colleagues Kees de Wit and Tom van Disseldorp travelled to Sorrento, Italy, at the invitation of Objectway for OWIN26. During this multi-day event, they spoke with C-level leaders and senior decision-makers from across the European financial services industry. In this episode, host Kees de Wit speaks with Alberto Cuccu (COO International at Objectway) about what it really takes to scale in wealth management industry today. They explore why strong platform foundations are essential before true differentiation can happen, how “solution as-a-service” differs from traditional SaaS, and why most innovation efforts fail when approached in isolation. The conversation also looks ahead, unpacking the growing role of AI in financial services, from automating operations to reshaping advisory roles, while highlighting one key constant: human judgment and emotion remain central. *** Leaders in Finance is made possible by the support of EY, Mogelijk Vastgoedfinancieringen, and Lepaya. In this episode we'll talk about how to get to Sorrento and the pros and cons of traveling there by ferry vs. train. We'll also talk about the difference between two trains from Naples to Sorrento which are often confused with each other, the Circumvesuviana train and the Campania Express train. Having just been to Sorrento via ferry and left by train, we've also got a couple of fun anecdotes. We're always here to make the mistakes and find solutions so you don't have to!Taxi rates in Sorrento are standardized, but can be a bit confusing. The most important things to know are:- The initial charge is €6.00 with surcharges for each 50 meters (between €0.30 and €0.15).- Each piece of luggage costs €1.00.- There is an addition €3.00 nighttime charge for rides between 10:00pm and 7:00am. - There is a holiday surcharge of €2.00.- The minimum fare, no matter the distance, is €12.00.- If the taxi is hired to take you outside of Sorrento and drop you off there, therefore returning to Sorrento empty, there is an addition 20% fee. For reference ,hiring a car from a private company (rather than a taxi) to take you to the Naples airport typically costs around €155. As mentioned, we have some articles about getting to Sorrento from Naples on our website, onlyabag.com.Naples to Sorrento.Naples Airport to Sorrento. Join Adam Kelly, Neil Craig, Chris Gamble and Peter Susovich, as we break down a defining ANZAC Round. Division One, Mt Eliza remain unbeaten with a commanding 48-point win over Mornington, while Devon Meadows fought back strongly to defeat Edithvale-Aspendale. Ladder leaders Frankston YCW controlled Pines, Langwarrin dominated Sorrento, and Rosebud edged Dromana in a thriller. Division Two, delivered just as much intrigue. Chelsea handed Seaford their first loss, Somerville overcame inaccuracy to beat Bonbeach, and Frankston Bombers proved too strong for Hastings. Karingal stormed back after a slow start to defeat Tyabb, Rye held off Pearcedale in a tight contest, and Red Hill surged late to down Crib Point.Form lines are emerging, contenders are separating — and there’s plenty to dissect. While we've talked about great deal about the Amalfi Coast, we only recently realized on a short trip up to Sorrento that we've never talked about it by itself, despite the fact we've been there so often. Today, we've decided to rectify that! In this episode we talk about the general vibe of Sorrento, our first impressions upon seeing it through the eyes of tourists, and who we think Sorrento is the best fit for in terms of vacations needs (versus Positano or Capri). The restaurant we recommended in this episode is called "L'Angolo Del Gusto Di Astarita Bruno E Ferdinando." It's just past the Ristorante Sant'Antonino, on Via Santa Maria delle Grazie. The gelato shop we mentioned in this episode is called Raki, which has two locations, one on Via S. Cesareo and the other on Sorrento's main street Corso Italia. As mentioned, we have some articles about getting to Sorrento from Naples on our website, onlyabag.com.Naples to Sorrento.Naples Airport to Sorrento.
Mario Iaccarino, Partner of the restaurant Casa Don Alfonso in Clayton and two-Michelin-starred restaurater, joins the show in-studio to discuss how the concept of the Clayton restaurant evolved from the flagship restaurant in Sorrento, Italy. Mario compares and contrasts the Clayton restaurant to Sorrento's, and says he is actively trying to save recipes from previous generations.
Chris and Amy begin the show by discussing Mayor Cara Spencer catching heat for the approval of the data center near the Armory. There is a new traffic ticket scam going around and it was sent to Amy, twice! Mario Iaccarino, partner with the restaurant Casa Don Alfonso in Clayton, joins in studio to discuss how the concept of the Clayton restaurant evolved from his flagship two-Michelin-starred restaurant in Sorrento, Italy. The hour rounds out with a another edition of "Did You See This?'
Hour one begins with the Top 3, where Chris and Amy begin by discussing the mayor catching heat for data center approval, as well as the Cardinals dropping the series to the Marlins. There is a new traffic ticket scam going around. We start hour 2 with Matt Pauley, who joins the show to discuss the Cardinals series loss to the Marlins, as well as why the getaway day lineup is not a big deal. Major Garrett, CBS Chief White House Correspondent and host of The Takeout on CBS News 24/7, joins tthe show to discuss all things Trump and the approaching midterms. Will Kash Patel be able to keep his job as the Director of the FBI? We also talk more about the data center near The Armory. Chris and Amy are joined in hour 3 by Mark Hertling, Retired US Army Lieutenant General, served as the Commanding General of United States Army Europe and the Seventh Army, joins the show to discuss his new book titled, "If I Don't Return: A Father's Wartime Journal." The long-running "Assignment" spy fiction series by Edward S Aarons showcases CIA operative Sam Durell in a range of pulpy, Cold War adventures. "Sorrento Siren", its 17th installment, sends Durell to Naples where he races against the clock to locate some stolen art and a rogue, murderous agent with ties to a libidinous Italian Countess. What's worse, his communist counterpart is travelling a parallel path. And if that weren't adventure enough, there's also ancient ruins among an active volcano and warring Italian families to negotiate! The stakes couldn't be higher as LTP takes its first look at this enduring offshoot of genre spy fiction.Shouts to Nick Anderson (https://linktr.ee/thebookgraveyard77) for the recommendation and Paperback Warrior (https://www.paperbackwarrior.com/) for more information on the author and series.FastFacts@03:20; Summary@11:00; PIPES@49:00

Send us a textYear's end is the perfect time to chase moments that help us fall in love with travel. We stitch together a lively route from New York's Erie Canal's quiet power to Namibia's Etosha, where elephants, zebra, and predators converge around water in an arid dreamscape. Along the way, we meet a winemaker who steers us into Spain's Alicante desert for a paella cooked over grapevines—one fire, one broth, no second chances—and learn why constraint can turn a meal into a memory that lasts. Our path bends to Sorrento, a flat and beautiful Italian base that opens to Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast. We talk walkable alleys, lemon groves that become limoncello, and sunset cocktails on cliffside terraces. We ride rails through Canada at sunrise and across Switzerland where a simple coffee sparks a love story. In Mexico City, lucha libre proves that travel joy can be loud, communal, and gloriously acrobatic, while Barcelona Spain lifts the spirit with castellers human towers, Sant Jordi's books and roses, and music festivals that sweep from legends to up-and-comers.We step into sacred time in Assisi in Italy's Umbrian region, to see Giotto's frescoes and St. Francis's world, then cross to India's Agra Fort where Shah Jahan arranged his bed and even a small mirror to keep the Taj Mahal always in view. Add a few delightful detours—a red-clay miniature golf course in Normandy, train-station romance in Belgium, a harmonica gifted to a child in a Ugandan forest (and a musical moment)! If these stories spark your curiosity, hit follow, and share with a friend who needs new trip ideas, Then dig into our archive of over 120 episodes to plan where your next unforgettable moment will begin.**Our guests this past year are a mix of travel pros and travel enthusiasts -- and all of them have insightful tips and stories to tell.**Podcast host Lea Lane has traveled to over 100 countries, and has written nine books, including the award-winning Places I Remember (Kirkus Reviews star rating, and 'one of the top 100 Indie books of the year').
