Desmond Vincent Tuddenham Desmond Vincent Tuddenham (born 29 January 1943) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Collingwood and Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1960s and 1970s. Early life Tuddenham was born and raised in Ross Creek, Victoria, a country town near Ballarat. He and his twin brother, Basil, were two of a large family consisting of nine children (seven boys and two girls) to parents William and Anne Tuddenham.] Tuddenham's upbringing was typical of country footballers who came from farming families. Before and after school and during weekends, he had to help with various farm chores. Sport, usually football or cricket, was played on Saturday, and the family attended church on Sundays.] The daily grind of farm work helped to strengthen Tuddenham's shoulders and arms, and a fanatical attitude to fitness hardened his body. Tuddenham played cricket with five of his brothers for Ross Creek, and football for the Young Christian Worker's club in Ballarat. In the space of three seasons, he went from the under-14s to the under-19s side, and won the league's best and fairest trophy at 16. This attracted the attention of several VFL clubs. Football career Tuddenham made his VFL debut in 1962 against North Melbourne at Arden Street Oval. His brand of football was fearless and tough, with a habit of grasping the football to his chest with his elbows sticking out dangerously. In recognition of his toughness and skills, Tuddenham was appointed Collingwood captain in 1966. In the semi-final against St Kilda, he kicked seven goals on Daryl Griffiths in a tense 10-point win to advance to the grand final. But St Kilda reversed the result two weeks later to take out the 1966 VFL grand final by one point, winning their first and only premiership so far. Collingwood were eliminated from the 1967 finals by eventual runner-up Geelong in the first semi-final. The Magpies trailed by one point at three-quarter time, but the Cats kicked six goals to one in the final quarter to win by 30 points. Tuddenham was reported for striking Geelong defender Geoff Ainsworth on the head with his forearm in the last quarter by field umpire Jeff Crouch. He was found guilty and suspended for four matches. In February 1970, Tuddenham and his deputy Len Thompson were involved in a pay dispute after they learned that Collingwood had recruited its first interstate player, Peter Eakins, from Western Australian club Subiaco for a sign-on fee of A$5,000 and A$5,000 a season for three years. That was A$2,000 more than Tuddenham was receiving as captain.] Tuddenham asked for A$8,000 over three seasons, and Thompson A$30,000 over five seasons, threatening to walk out if their demands were not met. Three weeks later, during which time there had been no negotiations, both players returned. Although their demands had not been met they did obtain a slightly improved salary; under the clubs terms, Tuddenham would receive A$125 per match plus VFL provident fund payments, and Thompson would earn A$105 per match. Although Tuddenham was confident the little episode would not affect his chances of retaining the captaincy, the Magpies committee announced Terry Waters as captain for the 1970 VFL season and Tuddenham accepted the decision. Collingwood finished on top of the ladder with 18 wins and defeated arch-rivals Carlton in a semi-final by 10 points to advance to the grand final. However, as had happened four years earlier against St Kilda, Carlton would reverse the result in the 1970 VFL grand final, coming from 44 points down at half-time to overrun Collingwood in the second half. Tuddenham was regarded among Collingwood's best players on the day. During the game he accidentally floored teammate Peter McKenna in the second quarter with a hip-and-shoulder bump meant for a Carlton player. McKenna had kicked five goals up to that stage of the game and would only add one more for the rest of the match. In an interview 40 years later, Tuddenham cited a lack of fitness, as well as inaccurate kicking for goal, as the main reason Collingwood lost: "I suggested to (coach) Bob Rose after we lost the 1966 Grand Final to St Kilda by a point that he do the coaching and I look after the fitness along with my friend John Toleman. The idea was that I would be an assistant coach, and I'll tell you what, I would have got the buggers fit." In 1971, Tuddenham became the first player to be named captain of the VFL representative team whilst not captain of his own club. When asked about this, state coach Tom Hafey replied bluntly: "We are not here to talk about Collingwood's mistakes." Tuddenham stayed with the club for a further season before moving to Essendon as captain-coach. He played four seasons for the Bombers before returning to Collingwood for his final two seasons. In 1978, Tuddenham was appointed senior coach of South Melbourne for a season, replaced by Ian Stewart when he failed to take the club to the finals. He coached VFA second division club Werribee to the finals in 1988, but left after he and the club concluded a playing coach would be better suited to the club's needs. Post-football career Tuddenham ran a plastics manufacturing business, which he sold in 1979. He later worked as a scrap-metal dealer. Controversy Since retirement, Tuddenham has been in trouble with the law on several occasions. In December 1980, he was found guilty by a County Court jury of having received stolen tyres valued at $30,000 and was remanded in custody. In June 1989, he pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiring to defraud the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce of $13,000. He told the magistrate that he was "guilty on the grounds I was helping out a friend in trouble". In July 2004, it was reported that he had received a two-month sentence suspended for two years for his third drink driving offence. He was ordered to pay a A$500 fine and had his driving license cancelled for 30 months. In December 2017, he pleaded guilty and was convicted of drink driving, having been found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.055 after drinking "three beers" at a football function. Personal life Tuddenham has four children. One of them, Paul, played 40 games for Collingwood from 1987 to 1991. Legacy Tuddenham was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2009, The Australian nominated Tuddenham as one of the 25 greatest footballers never to win a Brownlow Medal.

'Galup' is a Whadjuk Noongar word meaning 'Place of Fires' and refers to what is called 'Lake Monger' a remnant of the series of wetlands once known as the 'Perth Great Lakes'. In 1830 it was the site of a colonial era massacre when Redcoats of the British 63rd 'West Suffolk' Regiment and armed settlers pursued a party of Noongar from Mount Eliza to the shores of the lake. Subequently called 'Mongers Lake' after migrant John Henry Monger, who was given a land grant between the present day suburbs of Wembley and Subiaco, the Lake area underwent continual reclamation works and from the 1920s was dedicated for the purpose of 'public recreation, health and enjoyment'.

Perth is moving into a new phase in its property boom, with more and more buyers opting for units as houses become more and more expensive. The latest sales data shows that the strongest markets in Perth are well-located locations with a major presence of attached dwellings. While the most popular house markets for home buyers and investors (mostly those at the affordable end of the market) are a little less buoyant than earlier in the Perth up-cycle, the focus is switching to affordable units. Perth started this boom with a reputation as the most affordable capital city housing market. After a couple of years of stellar price growth, that's no longer the case. Perth is now well above Hobart and Darwin with its median house price and challenging Adelaide. Perth now has a median house price around $800,000, but its median unit price is in the low $500,000s, still well below that of Hobart and Adelaide. The evaporation of affordability in the Perth housing market can be seen is the rise in values in selected suburbs. Armadale, heavily targeted by investors and FHBs, had a median price of $250,000 three years ago and now it's approaching $500,000. Seaside Rockingham had a median price below $400,000 at the start of 2021 and now its $630,000. Greater Perth has many similar examples. When the bargain suburbs have medians above $500,000, the big attraction that caused the stampede starts to fade. So now buyers in Perth, increasingly, are looking at unit markets. While many house markets have been frenzied, with listings selling within days and prices rising by 20% or more a year, the unit markets are less competitive and prices have not yet taken off. The City of Perth provides a case study. The median unit price for East Perth has risen 6% in the past 12 months while the suburb of Perth has increased 9%. Typical units are priced in the mid-$400,000s. Quarterly sales have been 406 490 599, showing a major lift in buyer demand recently. In the City of South Perth, unit sales in both Como and South Perth are rising strongly, while in Subiaco quarterly unit sales have been trending higher for the past 12 months – the median unit price is heading towards $600,000, but that's a third of the price of typical Subiaco houses. There's a similar pattern in Victoria Park, where the median unit price has risen 11% but remains low at $400,000. Upmarket Mosman Park provides a startling contrast between its house and unit markets: there have been identical sales numbers in the past year, but the median prices are $2 million for houses and $380,000 for units. Perhaps not surprisingly, sales volumes for units are rising strongly, but prices haven't moved much as yet. There are many other examples in the Perth market, which is now following patterns seen in other cities in the trend we call the Rise and Rise of Apartments.

It's a little later than usual, but like Mrs Osunwa always says.... good news is never late! Tommy and Kelechi catch up on all the action from the weekend that saw soooo many terrific goals that FW had to extend their options for goals for the round! We talk about the cracking 3-3 between the champions and Balcatta and ask if Balcatta are playing themselves into some terrific form. We talk quickly gloss over Perth's 5-0 win over MUM FC but pay some much due credit to some of the best free-kick takers in the league. We talk about Subiaco doing the full Subiaco in their 3-7 loss to the NTC - they were terrific between the two boxes and frustrating inside them. We praise the NTC for turning it on and showing moments of quality to score 3 cracking goals in 7 minutes. We then talk UWA giving themselves a huge lifeline before this weekend with an important 0-0 against Fremantle before rounding off the fixtures with Perth's catch up game against the NTC where once again we saw some cracking goals.

Perth RedStar are on the brink of a threepeat after a 3-0 win against MUM FC - While the defending champions needed moments of brilliance from the leagues bests to do it, Kelechi still found plenty that MUM FC can take into their huge game next week. Elsewhere, Fremantle City kept their red hot form going with a 3-2 win over a resurgent Subiaco and are now closing in on a third place finish. But all eyes were at UWA with the home side scoring 4 against Perth SC only for them to come up against a red hot Ella Lincoln who all but wrapped up the golden boot race with 5 (FIVE) goals in an 8 goal game for the Azzuri. Tommy and Impetus football's Ben Gilby were there to talk us through the weekend that was.

Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Hosea 11: 1b.3-4.8c-9; Rs psalm 80: 2ac.3b.15-16; Matthew 10:7-15 THE GREAT AND FAITHFUL HEART OF THE FATHER The theme for our meditation today is: The Great and Faithful Heart of the Father. In the monastery in the mountains of Subiaco, Central Italy, in a room at the middle of the monastery there is an inscription explaining that the young man Saint Francis of Assisi came to this monastery several times. Francis considered Saint Benedict as his spiritual father. He came to meet and learn about Christian spirituality. He studied under someone with genuine and wise spiritual fatherhood. Throughout the world and especially in the Catholic Church, Saint Benedict is known as a mystic who brought the monastic way of life to the European continent, planting its roots and raising it. He is known as the protector of the European continent and the spiritual father of those who pursue the path of holiness. Saint Benedict's figure in the Church and society is as a wise and loving father. Saint Benedict is the patron saint of religious life. Saint Benedict inherited the fatherhood qualities from the Lord God. Through scriptures and the testimonies of historical figures in the Church, we learn about the great and faithful heart of the heavenly Father. God, who is almighty and full of love, must have the characteristics of a big heart and faithfulness. This characteristic is described in the prophecy of the prophet Hosea in the first reading. The Lord God is so big and amazing in his gentleness not only in caring for His children, but also replacing all the wrath that had been planned to fall on His sinful people, with His amazing goodness and mercy. God is also so faithful in following the life journey of His people, especially when they are experiencing trials, difficulties, oppression and suffering. They remain enlightened and guided by the Spirit of God until they realize that they can return to His most holy bosom. Their return to God signifies that their lives are new again. They received a restoration of their dignity which had been damaged by the sins and weaknesses of this world. God's great and faithful heart towards us humans is a reflection of our view of God's mercy. We always greet the merciful God through the prayers we offer. When we encounter a merciful God, we should be very confident that He does not punish or reject us. He does not take our sins into account. Instead, God accepts and restores us. This power of God's mercy must be used by each of us in our respective places of duty and mission. We are sent equipped with God's loving power, namely mercy and all His goodness, so that we can be the solutions to various problems in this life. Let's pray. In the name of the Father... O Lord, look at us with Your mercy and forgive our sins, especially our inability to forgive others who have wronged us. Our Father who art in heaven... In the name of the Father..

The mystery of God's grace in a person's life, however, has a beauty all its own. Theophilus was born in Corsica of rich and noble parents. As a young man, he entered the Franciscans and soon showed his love for solitude and prayer. After admirably completing his studies, he was ordained and assigned to a retreat house near Subiaco. Inspired by the austere life of the Franciscans there, he founded other such houses in Corsica and Tuscany. Over the years, he became famous for his preaching as well as his missionary efforts. Though he was always somewhat sickly, Theophilus generously served the needs of God's people in the confessional, in the sickroom, and at the graveside. Worn out by his labors, he died on June 17, 1740. He was canonized in 1930. Reflection There is a certain dynamism in all the saints that prompts them to find ever more selfless ways of responding to God's grace. As time went on, Theophilus gave more and more single-hearted service to God and to God's sons and daughters. Honoring the saints will make no sense unless we are thus drawn to live as generously as they did. Their holiness can never substitute for our own. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media
