How Great Were England 1986? Bobby Robson, Maradona and the World Cup That Became MythWas England's 1986 World Cup campaign a glorious failure, a missed opportunity, or simply the moment Bobby Robson's side ran into Diego Maradona at the peak of his powers? In this traditional end-of-season England special of By Far The Greatest Team, Graham and Jamie are joined by Steve Double to place Bobby Robson's England 1986 under the ranking microscope. From the chaos of Mexico's heat and altitude to England's stuttering start, Bryan Robson's injury, Ray Wilkins' red card, Gary Lineker's Golden Boot surge, and the tactical reshuffle that accidentally brought Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid and Steve Hodge into sharper focus, this is a deep dive into one of England's most fascinating World Cup campaigns. And then, of course, there is Argentina. The quarter-final at the Azteca gave football two of its most famous goals: The Hand of God and The Goal of the Century. One England could never forgive. One England could never deny. We revisit the build-up, the Falklands shadow, Maradona's genius, Peter Shilton's protest, Terry Butcher and Terry Fenwick's pursuit, and the late arrival of John Barnes — whose cameo almost changed the entire story. We also explore the afterlife of the match, including Steve Hodge's swap with Maradona and the famous shirt that decades later sold for a world-record fee.Key TakeawaysHow Bobby Robson was viewed before Mexico 86Why England's original shape struggledHow injuries and suspension forced a better tactical balanceGary Lineker's rise from pressure to Golden Boot winnerWhy England vs Argentina became more than just a quarter-finalThe two Maradona goals: controversy, genius and football immortalityJohn Barnes' late impact and the great “what if?”Steve Hodge, Maradona's shirt and the mythology of football objectsWhere England 1986 belongs in the Greatness RankingsKeywords: 1986 World Cup, England football, Bobby Robson, Diego Maradona, Hand of God, Goal of the Century, England vs Argentina, Gary Lineker, Steve Hodge, John Barnes, Ray Wilkins, Bryan Robson, football history, World Cup analysis, By Far The Greatest TeamIf you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!

On this week's episode of That Peter Crouch Podcast, Pete, Chris, and Sids are joined by one of England's toughest ever players… Terry Butcher. From THAT iconic blood-soaked shirt to facing Diego Maradona at the height of his powers, Terry takes us right inside the chaos, passion, and brutality of football in the 80s and 90s.The lads dive deep into Italia 90, the legendary England dressing room, Gazza stories, Bobby Robson's management style, and why Terry believes modern football has “gone soft”. There's also incredible insight into what it actually felt like playing against Maradona during the infamous Hand of God match in 1986 — including what happened when Terry confronted him afterwards.Away from football, Terry opens up emotionally about his son Christopher, his battle with PTSD after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the powerful ITV documentary Invisible Wounds. It's one of the most honest and moving conversations we've ever had on the podcast.Plus: shirt-swapping disasters, Escape To Victory, Dwight Yorke in Australia, and why footballers should stop pulling their socks down.Chumbawamba- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Be sure to watch Invisible Wounds, which will air on ITV and ITVX in June, ahead of England's World Cup opener v Croatia on June 17th.Combat2Coffee: https://www.combat2coffee.co.uk/Combat Stress: https://combatstress.org.uk/Help For Heroes: https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/get-help/ex-service-women/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23612607550&gbraid=0AAAAADfdgk3vGyf2yF9_4TfZXzAow3j3X&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlLDQBhDjARIsAPlIefFfyifNOXZ69J4ExXskaJtW_LA5j_-jigg8zBDVVMgkk3oJCeClSS4aAq4HEALw_wcB 00:00 - Eurovision chat and Wembley FA Cup stories02:04 - Chris and Sids wind Pete up about Wembley03:55 - John Terry sends Pete a Ruud Gullit surprise video05:26 - Terry Butcher joins the podcast06:25 - Inside the legendary Italia 90 England camp08:03 - Why England never expected to win Italia 9009:24 - England training sessions were “harder than matches”11:28 - Terry explains his mentality playing for England13:23 - “The game's gone soft” starts here14:00 - The full story behind the bloodied shirt15:34 - Why Terry refused to come off injured17:28 - “Every header felt like a squelch”18:20 - Terry reacts to fans dressing up as him19:47 - Life at Rangers and Old Firm madness22:46 - Terry relives the Hand of God match24:21 - Hearing England scream “HANDBALL!” at Maradona25:30 - Terry confronted Maradona after the game26:40 - Was Maradona the greatest ever?28:11 - What made Bobby Robson special29:34 - Terry's issues with modern footballers30:40 - Can England finally win another World Cup?31:33 - Finding out England call-ups on Ceefax32:10 - Why Terry hates energy gels on the pitch33:04 - Terry opens up about his son Christopher35:13 - PTSD, grief, and the struggles veterans face37:19 - How “Combat 2 Coffee” helps veterans talk40:29 - Terry speaks honestly about grief and crying42:38 - Listener questions begin42:59 - Why Terry turned down Escape To Victory44:11 - The only Argentina shirt Terry ever kept44:41 - John Terry's question: best centre-back partner?46:04 - Managing Sydney FC and Dwight Yorke stories48:07 - Highland derby chaos with Derek Adams50:28 - Terry explains what wearing the England shirt means51:04 - Terry's final rant about modern football51:47 - The lads reflect on Terry's emotional interview54:20 - End of Terry segment / football roundup begins01:02:43 - Why FA Cup managers should wear suits again01:06:10 - Listener story about referees and fancy dress01:12:00 - Paddy Power predictions01:28:11 - EndFor more Peter Crouch: Twitter - https://twitter.com/petercrouch Therapy Crouch - https://www.youtube.com/@thetherapycrouch For more Chris Stark Twitter - https://twitter.com/Chris_StarkInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisstark/For more Steve Sidwell Twitter - https://twitter.com/sjsidwell Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stevesidwell14 #PeterCrouch #ThatPeterCrouchPodcast Hosted on Acast. Think Terry Butcher.Blood and bandages, Italia 90, Glasgow Rangers and their English invasion, Bobby Robson's Ipswich. He also played for and managed the lads - and, in 2019, he spoke to us as part of our Meet the Managers series.
Welcome to the End of the Season, and to the Wyness Shuffle's annual end of season podcast. This year's edition: Survivor Series. Join pod regulars Andrew Moffat, Stevie Riley, Sandy Sutherland, Lee Tarling, and Andrew Young as they dissect the last two most enjoyable games of The ICT Rollercoaster of ICT Rollercoasters of a season; take a look at what could be ahead for ICT off the pitch, discuss the monumental efforts of Scott Kellacher and Billy McKay; debate the percentage of Skol lager, where to purchase an inflatable camel, if anyone can actually remember the Montrose game; and finally chat to two ICT players: Alfie Bavidge and Captain Danny Devine! 00:01:05: Introduction - We've Survived! Moff introduces the panel, and asks for their initial thoughts about ICT surviving in League One, the season that has just finished and the achievements of Scott Kellacher. 00:15:49: Game by Game Just two games to cover, but what games they were! We start by discussing the survival-clinching 3-0 stroll against Arbroath, then try to remember what actually happened in the 2-0 win on celebration day at Montrose. 00:35:51: Player Awards We pay tribute to the players who were voted Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year by their teammates and the fans: Musa Dibaga, Charlie Gilmour and Keith Bray. 00:50:23: Talk to Me: Alfie Bavidge Unusually, almost all ICT's loan players this season turned out to be stars, but none shone more brightly than Alfie Bavidge. The Aberdeen striker, whose goals played such a big part in the club's survival, dropped into the pod to tell us about becoming an instant hero for his dad's old team and revealed who his favourite Inverness team-mate was. 01:05:03: Administration – the endgame? In the final week of the season, it was announced that a CVA would be put to Caley Thistle's creditors on 22nd May. If accepted by the creditors, then the club will exit administration and be owned by preferred bidder and all-round saviour Alan Savage. We chat briefly about recent developments and whether anything could still go wrong. 01:13:48: Talk to Me: Danny Devine Remember Wyness Shuffle interviews with actual, serving Caley Thistle players? Well, they're back! Club captain and current longest-serving player Danny Devine sat down with Stevie to talk about his relief at surviving in League One, his memories of signing for the club under Terry Butcher, the dark days of relegation under Duncan Ferguson and being managed by Scott Kellacher and Billy Mckay. 01:46:58: 2025-26 Season Lookahead As always, The Wyness Shuffle will return with a bumper season preview podcast some time in July, but for now we look at who we could be playing in L1 next season before casting our eyes upon the transfer market and some Wish List signings. 02:05:15 Competition time Your chance to win some glorious ICT artwork! 02:08:00: Moments of the season The boys name their best of-pitch and best on-pitch moments of the season. It's been emotional, put it that way. 02:14:26: A View From the Fans We hear from a number of very happy Caley Thistle fans at the last game of the season at Montrose, and learn the words to great new song. 02:17:20 Bye for now Bye for now from us, and to two ICT legends, to whom we dedicate the pod and the season. ANOTHER SEASON OF UPS AND DOWNS AND AROUNDS… There's it.
Welcome back to the new edition of the show and coming up we head back to the 1980's when the goundworks were underway for the biggest changes in the history of football as the balance of power began its shift from to associations to the tv companies when the era of commercialism really got underway. Set against a backdrop of economic recession, rampant hooliganism and suspect fashion, Go To War tells the story of how triumph and tragedy shaped English football during the 1980s. It was a decade in which some fans died watching the game they loved, and at times, the ‘slum sport' seemed set to implode. Yet, remarkably, the game was on the cusp of morphing into the behemoth it has become today. Throughout this explosive book, author Jon Spurling delves into the stories behind the successes and strife at clubs including Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal, investigates the trials and tribulations of the England team and explores how ‘small-town boys' from Luton, Watford and Wimbledon made their mark. The decade also heralded the arrival of artificial pitches and fanzines, and Spurling introduces us to the new breed of high-profile executives, like Irving Scholar and Martin Edwards, who soon got busy changing the face of football. Thirty years in the making, Go To War draws heavily on interviews conducted with '80s icons including Terry Butcher, Graeme Sharp and Ray Wilkins, managerial legends like Howard Kendall and Bobby Robson and FA Cup heroes Ricky Villa and Norman Whiteside. Like its precursor, the bestselling Get It On: How the '70s Rocked Football, Go To War provides a unique insight into a pivotal footballing decade.
