The season may be over but we still have more Casual Football Chats to give you listeners! In a very special episode we speak to one of the faces of The Casual Football Co in Andy Barrett. One of the Sunday League regulars, Andy tells us the story of coming to Perth from the UK and finding a community in Melville. He talks about coaching children through his time with Jungle Sports and collaboration with the Perth Glory and how he's imparting that knowledge now as he coaches his own children. We also talk more about the connections to the community that come from Backpackers FC - the club and the business that has seen itself become the Casual Football Co, before some shameless plugs about him being a Quizard! You can tell from listening to Andy that Family, Football and Community are really at the forefront of his mind and we are lucky to have people like him and the Casual Football Co here in Perth. The Casual Football Chats are brought to you by the good people at The Casual Football Company. Casuals is the easiest way to play soccer in Perth, Australia. Andy Barrett is as nice a guy as you will ever meet.  My first encounter with him was January 2023 at Long Haul 100 down in Florida.  This was at the old location with the 3 out and backs.  He was at an aid station on the second leg at the turnaround.  I was pacing my buddy Jim Miller.  It was well after midnight and freezing cold, but it was the most awesome aid station I had ever experienced up until that point.  They really epitomized ultra running community!  I had talked with Andy several times about doing a Lake 2 Ocean episode because he loves that race and has done it many times.  This year after the 2024 edition it just worked out.  He is finishing up training for his 2nd chance at a silver buckle at Western States and had a little time to chat and here it is.  Andy is such a kind human and great storyteller, that all I had to do was listen.  Hope you enjoy.Squirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Restoring Salves (squirrelsnutbutter.com)code = TimberfriendsHome - PlayOn Reliefcode = martygardner15St. Pete Running Company Florida | Top 50 Running Store (stpeterunningco.com)code MWM20Miles With Marty Podcast | Home base for the ultra-running community | Patreon@pacertravel

The Funhouse Lounge in SE Portland describes itself as a cabaret of sorts, a “theater without a safety net.” The lineup of shows is varied, but it's safe to say you won't find any performances of “Hamlet” or “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf” there. Artistic director and proprietor Andy Barrett says in addition to plays, he presents stand-up comedy, burlesque, improv, karaoke, storytelling, bingo and dance parties. “Pulp Fiction,” isn't his first musical parody of culturally iconic shows. Past productions include “Die Hard,” “Heathers,” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Barrett joins us to tell us more about “Pulp Fiction” and pull back the curtain on what makes his version of musical parody sing.

Spoilers: The Life and Death of Jack Straw (Act 3, Scene 1) Note: The precise scene division of Act Three is debatable, this episode goes up to the general exit of the king and the rebels after the parley. Jack Straw is not a long play, but that won't stop us going into ridiculous amounts of detail about it. The start of Act 3 sees our heroes meet for the first time - with the king giving in to their demands and the diminishing of the rebel forces. The scenes are illustrated via a rough cut of our soon to be released full cast audio adaptation - which languishes in the edit as we post this. The rough cut of Act 3 scene 1 to The Life and Death of Jack Straw is performed by Pollie Hall as Jack Straw, Leigh McDonald as Wat Tyler, Andy Barrett as Hob Carter, Sarah Golding as Nobs, Heydn McCabe as Sir John Newton, Simon Nader as the Lord Mayor and Nemonee Stone as Richard II. With your host Robert Crighton. BE WARNED - If you just want to listen to the play as a play, don't listen to the spoilers episodes. Come back later, or don't listen. However, if you find early drama hard to follow, then you will get a good grounding in the action here - especially as we may make changes or cuts for our final version! The plain text version is rough in hew, it will change and we produce it in part to hunt out errors.  You can follow the text online - though some texts are better than others. There are, to our current knowledge, only two modern editions - the print on demand acting edition published by Groundling Press which can be found at their website http://www.groundlingpress.com/, and the almost impossible to get edition edited by Stephen Longstaffe (Mellen Critical Editions, 2002).  Online versions exist - there is a copy of a fascimile at archive.org (http://archive.org/) , which serves as a foundation https://archive.org/details/cu31924013324540/page/n9 Other online versions can and should be searched for.  Support the podcast by going to https://patreon.com/beyondshakespeare and pledge something – or by leaving a review on itunes or whichever podcasting service you use. Interludium de Clerico et Puella or The Student and the Girl (Fragments) This fragmentary play comes from around 1300, and survives as two scenes - the first where a student tries to woo a young woman (Malkyn) who rebuffs him, the second where he goes to Mome Elwis, a wise woman, to seek her aid to changing Malkyns mind. The fragments end at this point and we never discover whether Elwis does assist him, or what her plan might be - though the similarity with the earlier Dame Sirith text suggests one possible outcome, which we will cover in a future podcast. The text for this podcast has been lightly modernised rather than translated, and the best version of the original that can be found online (that we know of) can be seen here (https://d.lib.rochester.edu/teams/text/salisbury-trials-and-joys-interludium-de-clerico-et-puella) .  The Student was played by Andy Barrett, Malkyn by Gillian Horgan, and Mother Elwise by Sarah Golding.   The presenter was Robert Crighton. Happy Valentine's Day!   We celebrate this day with a discussion on unity and peace and the healing of racism. LOVE IS COLORLESS.   BTC Host KATHY BARRETT interviews the brilliant DR. KITTY OLIVER, Producer, Author, Oral Historian, Journalist, Writing Professor Race and Ethnic Relations, about her groundbreaking work. The Race and Change Oral History Archive that she founded is one of the largest cross-cultural collections on race relations in the country.   CNN's "Black in America," has chronicled her inspiring work using THE RACE AND CHANGE Dialogue she pioneered.  She records archival oral histories, produces television and Web radio programs, stages musical projects and teaches community outreach classes to engage native-born U.S. residents and immigrants in conversations about race and ethnic differences across generations.   Dr. Oliver's books, "Multicolored Memories of a Black Southern Girl," "Voices of Amera: Race and Change in Hollywood, Florida," and Multicultural Reflections on Race and Change,"  share her own migration from segregation to integration.   Dr. Oliver is the director of the multimedia website project THE RACE and CHANGE INITIATIVE at Florida Atlantic University.   Male Voice Intro - Mitchell Geller   NIGHT AND THE MUSIC Theme song, written, produced and performed by Barbara Thies and Andy Barrett
