In honor of our Earth, on her day, we have two stories about the overlooked, ignored, and neglected parts of nature. In the first half, we learn about an epic battle that is raging across the globe every day, every moment. It's happening in the ocean, and your very life depends on it. In the second half, we make an earnest, possibly foolhardy, attempt to figure out the dollar value of the work of bats and bees as we try to keep our careful calculations from falling apart in the face of the realities of life, and love, and loss.Sign up for our newsletter!! The Tip Sheet tackles the Top End for one final time as the Parramatta Eels take on the Canberra Raiders in Darwin in Round 6. They will do so without Zac Lomax after news broke on Wednesday about a fractured foot for Parramatta's star recruit. Sixties and Forty20 look at who replaces him and how the Eels can attack the robust Canberra Raiders outfit. There is more on the docket though with the boys previewing a double header at Lidcombe Oval as the Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup also host the Green Machine in their Round 6 clashes.
Join Ben, Brian, and Ted for hangar talk about the joys (and pains) of annual inspections in this episode of the Midlife Pilot Podcast. The guys commiserate over their planes being simultaneously grounded, with Ben's Beast down to five cylinders and showing remarkable "patience" (or is it numbness?). Brian dishes on his new book of aviation essays "Make Small Corrections," while Ted smugly reminds everyone his oil-free belly never needs scrubbing. The fellas debate what aircraft they'd come back as in the next life, swap formation flying stories, and remind everyone about the upcoming Texas meetup. Happy new season, everyone! Tommy is flying solo this week to look back on an exciting opening weekend of the NPLWA - Men's competition as he delves into Saturday's five game slate and has a couple of observations from Friday's season opener at Frank Drago Reserve. First of all, the replay of last season's Top Four Cup Final lived up to expectation in being an entertaining affair, as Champions Kingsway lay down an early marker but Stirling lose no admirers in a battle of two likely title contenders. Green Machine goal scorers Laat Mathiang and Jayden Gorman join us for a chat. Then, to a couple of eye-catching results from Round One, as Perth Glory and Perth SC record confidence-boosting wins. Kelechi comes off the bench for a cameo as he chats about the Italian derby at Dorrien Gardens and doesn't believe the score line truly reflected the game! Tommy then reflects on the Armadale versus Floreat goalless draw which he watched Sunday morning on x2 speed and saw one of the unluckiest misses of all time. There's a brief look at the 1-1 draw between Knights and RedStar, while there was several encouraging signs for Bayswater as they picked up a late 2-1 win over Night Series winners Sorrento FC on Friday. In a wide-ranging, pre-election preview, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil de Beer torpedoes rumours of a Multi-Party Charter (MPC) collapse; gives his take on the daggers flying in former President Jacob Zuma's MK party; and hails Patriotic Alliance (PA) President Gayton McKenzie's combat strategy, saying the “Green Machine” is moving down to the Cape like an “oil slick” and has left the Democratic Alliance (DA) overwhelmed by the Brown Child Revolution. He discusses a post-election three-faction scenario comprising the MPC, the RET (Radical Economic Transformation), and the African National Congress (ANC). “And the question is, whom of those three are going to have coffee with whom, except I know they already having coffee.” However, De Beer vows that his UIM party would never form a government with the ANC or the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). “Then we go it alone. We cannot sit with this country's fiscal, economical enemy.” Sign up for your early morning brew of the BizNews Insider to keep you up to speed with the content that matters. We're breaking down teams, examining standings, and speculating on the potential contenders. Who's in it for the cup, and who's just going through the motions? Plus, we delve into a spicy discussion about NBA unicorns and offer an overdue apology in our unicorn quiz segment! At its heart, basketball is about the people who play it - their skills, their stories. Featured Musician: Sugar Shack The video is here: [After THE JUMP: What's to be said] --------------------- 1. Iowa Preview starts at the top The new corner is even better than the old corner, who was last year's DB of the year in the Big Ten. Front is a little small—can we run through them as well as around them? Comes down to whether Michigan can take advantage of athletic limitations. Don't throw pick sixes. Offense: um, it's Baaaaaaad. Maybe they'll get some run with the fullback but not with that OL. 2. Maryland After Review: Offense starts at 28:45 McCarthy wasn't perfect but he was still pretty good. Still perfect on anything that's not a bomb, and he recalibrated after he realized his arm strength is back to more than it was when he was rehabbing. We haven't seen him uncork yet this year so that makes sense. CORUM! In defense of his pass pro. Also: OL didn't have a big pass protection test in UMD. 3. Maryland After Review: Defense starts at 55:51 Gemon Green has been fixed? He's not looking around much but he plays the receiver and he runs their routes for them. NFL Player. Also Sainristil: weird that he's only in his first year of defense because he tackles so well and reads what's happening to him. One big play on him but you can tell he's playing run and knows what mistake he made. LBs are playing back and not taking lanes when they get them, and we know that's a thing in this defense because Ross and NHG were good at those. DL is making it better, but time for McGregor to take Upshaw's snaps and split time with Harrell. Mazi Smith: dude. 4. Gimmicky Top Five: Biggest Contrasts starts at 1:20:56 Brian gets mad that Seth's #1 is the obvious one. About the Featured Musician Detroit-based Sugar Tradition (Bandcamp, Spotify, Instagram) is a more rockin, more psychedelic version of Jet. There's a lot of blues riffs, but they're excellent musicians who can infuse enough energy to keep that from getting rote, which is pretty hard to do after 70 years of people riffing on that progression. They're just getting into the studio to record some new stuff but their album Sugar Shack is part of my work playlist and I shared two songs from 2019's Green Machine because I was listening to that while doing UFR this week. Baby What's Wrong Nowhere to Go Slummin Around Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat THE USUAL LINKS: Helpful iTunes subscribe link General podcast feed link What's with the theme music?
