Welcome to our world... There will Be Geek is three occasionally knowledgeable long-term geeks wittering on about our favourite subjects, opining on things that make us happy/sad/intereste/annoyed, and occasionally shining a light into the darker recesses of all things Geek. Enjoy!
This week, Mike and Cav explore the end of the world from a British point of view, what with the world ending and all. We look at what makes a British Apocalypse distinct and different, with Triffids, Zombies, Aliens Invasion, and Killer Geordies. Plus out Thimble of Win has to Face the Music after conquests, and investigates some Mould. We're back, and this time it's...well, news. This week it's all about our take on recent Pop Culture News. We have strange new worlds, the biggest fight between '80s metal legends since David Lee Roth and Vince Neil had a punch up in a Wetherspoons car park, bats leaving the cave, many people realising that this is the way, sandy Al Pacino comparisons, and snide (or should I say Snyd?) cuts. All for your earhole pleasure. This time around we're doing things a little differently, what with one thing and another. Once we've got our systems set up for separate location recording we'll be back on our normal programming. Today, this is just Cav on his own, giving his review of DOOM Eternal, which is well worth your time. There's a lot of detail in here, and if you're even considering purchasing the game, you should definitely give this a listen.
This week, we look into the world of Guilty Pleasures. Is there such a thing? What constitutes a guilty pleasure? Is it simply liking cultural artefacts that others don’t, or is it more nuanced that that? What do your favourite geeksplorers feel shame about (answer; not much)? Plus Cav watches a bunch of movies so you don’t have to, Mike baldly goes, and Chani gets cross about animals: Thimble of Win Links https://coloroutofspacemovie.com/ https://www.parasite-movie.com/ https://www.jayandsilentbobreboot.co.uk/ https://www.starwars.com/films/star-wars-episode-ix-the-rise-of-skywalker https://rambo.movie/ https://www.cbs.com/shows/star-trek-picard/ https://animal-crossing.com/
This week two of your favourite swashbuckling geeksplorers present their very brief thoughts on Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (General Chani was unavailable for this one, doubtless off training her minions in a secret location). We'll return with a full reaction episode in a week or so, once we've had time to watch it again and gather our thoughts.
We're baaaaaaaack! After a long hiatus, and a slight relocation of TWBG Towers (80m to be precise) we return with a look at the role of Area 51 in popular culture and find... a lot less than we thought we would. Maybe it's a conspiracy. Maybe the government really are hushing everything up. Maybe Naruto running at a secret base is a bloody stupid idea. Who knows? Well, hopefully after listening to this you'll be a little wiser. Or is that what they want you to think...? All that, plus Chani makes mushrooms when she pees while ferrying a baby, Cav refuses to take his helmet off while making pew pew noises, and Mike answers the question about who watches the Watchmen (apparently it's him). Watch the skies people. Thimble of Win Links http://www.kojimaproductions.jp/en/death_stranding.html https://www.disney.com.au/disney-plus/the-mandalorian https://www.hbo.com/watchmen
This week, we've got to drag this one back to the precinct because the Lieutenant is breaking our balls. We're playing it by our own rules, busting the bad guys and chasing them down back alleys full of boxes and produce. Yes, for Episode 5-0 we're looking at Police Procedurals. We look at our favourite examples of the genre, and ask why they hold such fascination for us. Plus Chani's jonesing for Borderlands, Cav's only joking, and Mike says the magic word. Game be the game. Do you like horror franchises? This week we have a doozy. Arnold Scwarzenegger as the Final Girl, Bill Paxton as annoying-douchebag-who-gets-killed, Topher Grace as Really? Him? and Olivia Munn being officially done with this shit. Yes. It's the various permutations of Predator. We go as deep as we can stomach, and sometimes deeper than that. Plus Cav gets Mouldy and Piratey, Mike gets into Ninja Sex, and Chani has epic ranty beef with RDR2. This week we look at the often unsung heroes of small and silver screen, the Character Actor. We salute our favourite examples, and look at what makes them good at what they do. Plus, Cav fiddles with his Dragonballs, Mike enjoys Discovery, and Chani goes Mads for Polar. One of these days, the puns might get better. But today is not that day. For the last episode of 2018, we wanted to talk about all of the things we've loved in the world of popular culture this year. We talk about our picks from the worlds of Gaming, TV and Film, with some expected and some surprising choices. There's cowboys, spies, assassins, custard cream enthusiasts, and all points in between. Here's wishing you a happy new year, ans we look forward to seeing you again in 2019! https://www.therewillbegeek.com/
This week, we return triumphant to kick over the nativity scene, proposition the Carol singers and give Santa a wedgie. We look into the very worst pop culture offerings that Christmas has to offer, be it TV, Film or Music, getting our urchin hands dirty so you don't have to. Plus Chani gets her cowboy on, Cav breaks the earth, and Mike goes gooey over thirteen. Ho Ho Ho fuckers. Thimble Links Red Dead Redemption 2 Broken Earth Trilogy Doctor Who
...and then there was everything else. This week, we look at the creditable failures, the blind alleys, and the baffling dumpster fires that constitute everything in the Terminator franchise after Terminator 2. We take a closer look at the films, the TV show, the games, and the toy line (yes, really). We also take a look at "Music Inspired By" the franchise (yes, really; check this out), and pull no punches in our analysis of everything Terminator after 1991. Plus Cav makes Crab Cakes, Chani fondles a Cougar, and Mike gets excited about a bald captain. Thimble of Win Links Clutch - Hot Bottom Feeder Far Cry 5 Sir Patrick Stewart - Star Trek Announcement
This week, your Geek Resistance Heroes are sending noble warriors back in time to 1984 and 1991, desperately trying to rescue Sarah and John Connor. We talk about where it all began for the Terminator films, and we start with the two offerings that arguable define the franchise. There's Naked Arnie. There's prop-based puns. There's irritating children. What more could you ask for? Plus Cav wants to Glass you, Chani's feeling Mythical, and Mike can;t wait to Cleave. "Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the southern hemisphere lies a small unregarded podcast. Presenting this podcast for a period of roughly two years are a group of ape-descended life forms who - with the exception of Chani - are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea..."* Today we release Episode 42, and there was really only one thing we could talk about. So we present to you our take on the works of that most glorious, frustrating, hoopiest of froods, Douglas Adams. Plus Cav gets Manic, Chani starts Following, and Mike is Alluding to another podcast altogether... There are certain dates every year that the Geek Calendar can be set by; your local big convention, the first of the big tentpole blockbusters, San Diego ComiCon, and so on. Free Comic Book Day has firmly established itself as one of these the world over, so on May 5th, we popped down to All Star Comics here in glamourous Melbourne to see what delights awaited us. We then hotfooted it back to TWBG Towers to read, digest, and then record this episode based on what we found. There were secret agents, robot dogs, preludes to war, and utter batshit insanity. And that's just the comics. Plus in our Thimble of Win, Chani gets lost in the Ink Machine, and Mike and Cav get some serious Avenging in (so, potential spoilers). This week, we debate all things Vampire - where do they come from, what is it that appeals about them, which are the best examples of the genre and so on. We pick out our favorite bloodsuckers, and those we'd rather stake out on a tropical island at noon. And there's bonus Nicholas Cage. Welcome back to our short mini-episode, where we review Ready Player One. Let's just say...reactions were mixed.
This week, we debate the issues surrounding Physical vs. Digital Media. Is it better to own a physical object outright, or are we OK with digital versions of our favourite books, films, or music. And what of Cloud Storage and subscription fees? We give the whole shebang a once over. Plus our Thimble of Win deals with Banjo LARP, Non-Verbal Amish Sci-Fi, Cowboys, Space Jockeys, and Art-House Powered People. With the forthcoming release of Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One, we thought is might be a good idea to revisit the novel, and see if it really was as good as the first pass led us to believe. Yeah. About that... We talk about the limits of nostalgia, terrible marketing, bad writing, and how far a gimmick will get you. Plus there's our regular Thimble of Win (with an additional Mugful of Meh). This week, you're going to have to watch your backs... they have eyes everywhere. We've gone too far down the rabbit hole, and it's everywhere - the Moon, Abbey Road, all the way to the White House (Thanks Obama). I'm telling you, they've got body doubles, replacement band members, ghost writers, the whole nine yards. You've got to get the news out while you can! Careful though - someone might be listening...
This episode, your favourite hopeless romantics travel through time and space, via war zones, alternate realities, and all points in between to bring you our favourite examples of couples and love in Pop Culture. This week, it's the second half or our review of 2017, where we look further at our favourite pop-culture moments of the year.
This week, we give you the first half of our review of 2017. We give you our favourite Geek moments from last year, covering our usual bases of Games, Film, TV, and anything else we can come up with. It's a long one, and part two will be with you shortly. We'll be looking to have a more regular schedule over the next year, and will hopefully be launching some new ways in which you can interact with the podcast. Which, being people of taste and discernment, you will be only to ready to take advantage of.
This week, we look at Space Operas, and give praise/a good kicking to several notable examples of the genre, taking in Film, TV, Books and Games. We journey form Epsilon 3 to Mongo, from the Systems Commonwealth to the moons of Jupiter, all the while dispensing our verdicts without mercy. We're not including Star Wars, Star Trek or Doctor Who - they get enough coverage already, not least from us. So sit back and take in our thoughts on the Genre. Plus you can hear Cav rant, Chani gush excitedly at joining 2016, and Mike crack inappropriate jokes at every available opportunity. This episode, Mike and Cav get together to give you their review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So naturally, there are a lot of spoilers. We talk at length about the key moments of the film, its many narrative arcs, and where this leaves the future of the Star Wars universe. If you haven't seen the film yet, then wait until you have to listen to this episode. Enjoy!
We're back once again with our hiatus review. This time, we're talking about the best in TV and film from while we were away galavanting (in the case of at least one of our number, getting married). We take a look at Stranger Things, Star Trek: Discovery and Game of Thrones (with honourable mentions for The Defenders, and The Tick). We also rave about Baby Driver, have a good hard look at Blade Runner 2049, Thor: Ragnarok, Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales, and Spiderman: Homecoming. Yes - all of the colons! And Chani losing her shit about Littlefinger. Well hello again. Did you miss us? Once again, it's time to welcome back your three favourite Geek Vacationers, as we pass around the novelty donkeys, and break out the slide show while Uncle Marmaduke passes out in the corner after one too many brandies... In this episode, we'll be looking at Chani and Cav's exploits, as we hear all about their adventures in the world of conventions. Chani dazzles us with her best Hollywood Smile as she regales us with tales of hobnobbing with the stars of VidCon, and give us the lowdown on PaxAus. Cav reviews Wolfenstein II: The New Collosus, and we almost kill Chani with fictional wrestlers. There's a monkey cat, teeth brushing in games, and shouting at a boy called Jason. This week, Cav, Mike and Chani are sampling Three Flavours Cornetto as we look over Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End. We look at extended adolescence, friendship, and bromance, and we give our take on the writngs of Pegg, the performance of Frost and the direction of Wright. As always, we look at the history of the company, our own formative experiences with a large variety of consoles and other platforms, and we hazard a guess as to where the future lies for the company. We ask what is Retro, whether there is pleasure in simplicity, how important is playability (answer: very), and whether it's worth your while going any further than Championship Manager 01/02 if your looking for a football management game. Sequels. Love, loathe or detest them, if you love cinema, then you can't avoid them. But how to categorise them? What makes a sequel worth your time? In the first of a new occasional feature, your favourite geeks play Judge Judy and Executioner to a host of follow-ups, deciding upon their worthiness and giving our criteria and whimsical judgements for doing so, choosing which go where we don't need roads, and which are subject to death by exile. Plus in our Thimble of Win, there's the rise of the old ones (or is there?), the fall of a despicable troll, and several generations of British comedy in a variety of different formats. This time, it's personal... Put your feet up, rest your weary limbs, grab a mince pie and pour yourself a drink. It's time for the Three Wise Geeks to give you the TWBG take on Christmas. We talk about our favourite pop-culture traditions for festive periods past, and then give you our review of all that was good, middling and questionable from this year. Plus our thimble of Win, which tackles soundtracks, youtube, and ethics in games journalism. No - seriously... Happy Christmas, and a shenanigan filled new year to you all. We'll be back in 2017. https://www.patreon.com/dannyodwyer https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOl4b517qn8hr_5QTAaGdGJhxU-zMka-9 https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/westworld-season-1-music-from/id1182133569
Cav and Mike bring you speculation and then reaction to the midnight screening of Rogue One. No spoilers this time - we'll be talking about the film in more depth another time. For now, we give our thoughts on one of 2016's most anticipated releases, and decide whether it lives up to the hype.
A long time ago (Saturday), in a country far, far away (let's face it - Australia is a long way from everywhere)... This week, our disreputable gang of rebellious ne'er-do-wells and rag-tag adventurers bring you their thoughts on the impending release of Rogue One, and discuss the sometimes confusing and often perplexing topic of the Star Wars Extended Universe - what worked, what didn't, and what left us baffled. Plus our thimble of win covers the Game awards and The Man In The High Castle. And Cav confuses us with teacherspeak. Don't say you weren't warned. http://thegameawards.com/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1740299/ http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page https://www.amazon.com/Heir-Empire-Star-Wars-Trilogy/dp/0553296124 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC9abcLLQpI
This week, in the first of an occasional series on Auteurs, we present an episode based around the Horror work of John Carpenter, a director who's a firm favourite here at TWBG towers. We discuss his work in the genre, looking into his recurring themes, hit, misses and everything in between. Plus, as ever there's out Thimble of Win, where Cav gets Metallic, Chani's all Ghosty, and Mike waffles about a French comic. I can see you salivating at the prospect. http://www.theofficialjohncarpenter.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o2XWgjCTjc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4VmJcZR0Yg https://metallica.com/blog/news/429181/hardwired-to-self-destruct-available-november-18-2
This week, our dashing and daring geekaliers sally forth onto the filed of entertainment, chasing down all things geek TV. We duel with Hitchikers, Red Dwarves, Pop-culture Popping Pegg (and Stephenson), Ricks and Mortys, purple haired Cypclopettes, crowds of I.T. folk, and give thos Big Bang fells a damned good thrashing! Plus, out thimble of win takes in Doctor Who, Civilisation and Pokemon. This week, our crack investigative team of Cav and Chani brave the wilds of PAX Aus to bring you news of games, geekery and all things good. We talk about the highs, the lows, the slightly odd bits in between, and get to grips with all of the things we found exciting. You want queue action? You got it. Glue? On point? Cosplay reviews? All of the purple sideboob you can shake a LARP sword at. Plus in our Thimble of Win, we talk about T2, Doctor Who and Buddy System. All the joy you can eat. Pop Culture and Halloween have always had an interesting relationship. Whether it be the drawing in of the northern hemisphere nights, the telling of ghost stories, the delicious feelings of dread or the tingle of the fear that runs down your spine, there is something to be said for allowing the unknown and uncanny to thrill, delight and spook. In this episode, we look at the roots of the festival, and talk about some notable films and TV specials built around this time of year. We look at why there is so much love for Halloween, and we delve into its impact and cultural footprint in Australia. Plus there's our usual Thimble of Win. And absolutely no filth this time. Promise. http://people.com/movies/inside-the-real-story-that-inspired-the-conjuring-2/ https://www.amazon.com/Ghostwatch-Michael-Parkinson/dp/B005OJCPZU http://www.boysinthetrees.com.au/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween_(1978_film) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Class_(2016_TV_series)
*****WARNING: CONTAINS EXPLICIT MATERIAL***** *****SERIOUSLY - DON"T SAY WE DIDN'T WARN YOU***** Right, now that's out of the way, we present our take on Tetris. We explore its early origins in 80's Russia, the convoluted mess of rights ownership surrounding it, its cultural impact and other things; not least more proof, if it were needed, that Rule 34 exists (ask your mum - go on, it'll be fun). We also review "Tetris: The Games People Play" by Box Brown - well worth a look, unlike some of the links below... Plus there's out regular Thimble of Win. As if you weren't already filled to the brim with entertaining goodness. You lucky sods! Ahoy there, geekowarriors! After our winter break, we decided to tickle your ear canals with a subject for debate. Wherever you fit in geek and nerd culture, there are always some areas that people are shocked and surprised at you for not being across. Those moments where you confess to never having played/seen/drawn/fondled/enjoyed a particular geek experience that would otherwise appear to be right up your (diagon)alley. This week, we hear what happened when Chani tried Terry Pratchett, Cav tried Doctor Who, and Mike tried Civilisation (the game, not the concept) Plus as ever, there's our Thimble of Win. you lucky sods. Greetings fellow geeketarians! In this, our most latest of episodes, we go deep into the world of Magic: The Gathering. We poke around the musty cellar of history to look at the rise of this, the Übermensch of trading card games. We look to see who has tried to muscle in on its action through the years, we rake over its family tree with a fine toothed comb, and almost certainly that we have driven the metaphor fairy to hard liquor in search of descriptions for this blurb. Plus, we all get to give you our Thimble of Win. Are you not entertained?
You lucky, lucky people! Yes - you saw correctly. You get an extra mini-episode this week. We figured that this one was worth its own review. Normal programming will resume shortly, but in the meanwhile, feast your ears with our dulcet ramblings on what we thought of Ghostbusters. Get on it good people.
