From the VFL days of old to the confectionery aisle at ALDI, Bulldogs legend Simon Beasley takes us on a nostalgic (and very sweet) journey in the latest ep of the Food Bytes podcast. Simon shares with us his memories of life growing up in WA, the magic of his mum’s chocolate pudding, working as a stockbroker during his playing days, hiding sweet treats around the house – and the unforgettable intercept of 1984 at Footscray’s Western Oval that saved the day! As for our Food Poll this week … we’re known here at Food Bytes for our crazy capers, but what are your thoughts on the ones that come out of a jar? *Content Warning: This episode of Doin' Time may contain audio images of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have died, and discussion of Deaths in Custody. This special Doin' Time program is a dedication and tribute to the much loved and honourable Uncle Ray Jackson, born 27 March, 1941 and died on April 23 2015. He was a Wiradjuri warrior who dedicated his life to fighting for justice and human rights for Aboriginal people, and much more. Our first Tribute to Ray is Joseph Pugliese longtime activist and much loved guest on Doin Time, and close friend of Uncle Ray Jackson. We will hear from his loved ones throughout the show.We will also interview Carolyn Jackson daughter of Uncle Ray. She has been a much loved part of the show since 2015 when her father passed away. Ray is missed by Carolyn, and her beautiful family.Lastly, we will bring you an interview with Rob from Monday Breakfast. On Saturday the 26th of April around 450 activists attended a counterprotest in the name of trans liberation. The action was countering the reactionary 'WOMEN WILL SPEAK' rally, organised by TERFs and white nationalists. A similar event held last year by the Women's Action Group, an organisation dedicated to spouting transphobia, was attended by members of the National Socialist Network. A group of trans and queer people, antifascists, and other allies disrupted Saturday's action by making noise and dancing to music in numbers vastly higher than that of the transphobic rally. Police set up a designated area during the day and used these powers to force activists, many of whom are disabled, to remove their masks before searching them with a wand. VicPol later used brutal force against protestors who were chanting about Victoria Police's murder of Somali man Abdifatah Ahmed in Footscray two weeks ago. Doin' Time spoke to Rob Harrison, a proud non-binary, transgender and queer person, who attended the rally and witnessed the police violence. They are a co-host of the Monday Breakfast show at 3CR Community Radio. I invited Rob on to the show today because Uncle Ray was very committed to fighting police powers, and always stood in solidarity with our trans siblings. Rob gave an eyewitness account of the rally, and the police brutality.
On this show:We reflected on how collective efforts can lead to enriched queer community within regional areas.Noted that the previous day had been International Day of Lesbian Visibility; and having unintentionally included some (probably also unintentional) exclusive language taken from a prime explanatory website, took some time to reflect on the intersectional gender nature of being a lesbian.Madison, Atlas and our guest Lunar shared their lived experiences of being queer folk with disability, living in a queerphobic and ableist society. Reflections includedhow being queer and disabled can be conjoined, and then judged, by ableist people.the hazards of queer disable persons internalising the judgements of others.how ableist behaviour is generally considered unacceptable, but yet it persists.visable and invisable disability, and how attitudes toward them can differ. How pride in oneself as a queer person with lived experience in disability actually adds to the inherent value we already have, as people who exist in the world.Lunar shared some of her poetry; The Battle Within, and Gaze in the Mirror. We ruminated a little on the expense of coffee under late stage capitalism (and why some spoons have holes in them).Community Links:TGD Bookclub, 10 May, 1 - 2:30pm, Free Event, Thorne Harbour Health Building 200 Hoddle St, Abbottsford; and online.Frooty Loops Meetup, 6 - 9pm, Every Second Sunday, Free Event, Little Foot Bar, 223 Barkly St, Footscray.Identity Test, A Trans Existential Drama and Caberet, at Butterfly Club, 5 Carson Place, Melbourne CBD. 7pm, 28th April to 3rd May; Tickets $39 standard, $35 concession.Queer Multicultural Carnival, 7th June, 10am - 6pm.
