Two Old Dolfans - Miami Dolphins

We recorded this on black Monday following the blowout loss to the Patriots and watched the newswire for any changes right up to the time we hit stop. Soon after it came out that McDaniel was PART of the GM search team. Alex and Scott yelled at each other over the phone, so frustrated at the sheer stupidity of the organization we’ve followed and cheered for our entire lives. Before we get dramatic, we’ll wait and still see where the chips fall. Will this be the last episode of this podcast EVER? It very well might be. We’ll do something else in the future if it is. Listen in as we talk about who we like for the next Dolphins GM, and who we are looking at for the next head coach – assuming that McDoofus was gone. 2026 is looking bad friends. Yes… that Who song from the seventies was going through Scott’s head as Alex sat down this morning to record our new episode. We both feel this loss was the death knell for McDaniel, and it’s way past time. Why? Listen and we’ll regurgitate a few things we’ve said all along, as well as use other teams as examples to follow. In terms of building a winning franchise, a company of excellence, Stephen Ross has been an abject failure – but what can we do? Try again and hope better choices are made. Let’s lay it out again in clear simple language, “this” is what we need to attract a GM from a winning tree. “This” should be featured on his resume. “This” is what should be done about McDaniel. It took a few extra days to line things up this week, but Alex and Scott made it into the studio to record an enjoyable session. Where beating the Bills was a signature win, beating the Jets was an enjoyable ride. From the dismal beginning of the season, to ripping off four W’s in a row, ugly or not, this one was a pleasure. The Saints are the Aints again. Remember those days? Our Dolphins got a miracle from Minkah 2pt interception return to seal a win against one of the NFL’s worst teams. Since Alex and Scott have not connected since before the mediocrity in Madrid, there is a lot to cover. We don’t understand the groups on social media that think this team has a chance at the playoffs. They must be on drugs, right? Anyway. this episode contains thoughts on our “win streak” including takeaways from the Saints game, and some quick thoughts on the upcoming matchup against the Jets. Both Alex and Scott couldn’t wait to talk about the Bills game, and everything surrounding it – but it took two days to find a hole in our schedules. As the front office purge continues, Buffalo came to town and no one in professional sports gave the Dolphins a chance, including Vegas (and us). Yet, not only did the Dolphins win, but they dominated the scoreboard. Alex has it broken down – he knows why this happened.They can’t let go of the changes happing to the team, and scratch that surface. So Miami is going to Spain! Alex and Scott hit the studio prior to the final game of the World Series on a Saturday afternoon to catch up with our Dolfans friends. Scott’s sipping on a margarita, Alex a coffee. We start with the elephant in the room – that thing we’ve been asking for for YEARS has finally happened. Chris Grier is gone. What is our immediate reaction? What she would do about McDaniel? With Alex on travel, we couldn’t link up to discuss the Atlanta game, so we touch on that. Then it’s grit our teeth and briefly address the embarrassment against the Ravens. Around the NFL and One Cool Thing brings us home.

For this episode, Scott's in his studio in San Diego, while Alex and guest host Andy Korge join from the man cave in South Miami. Do we have to talk about the Browns Game? Yes, that's the podcast. Social media is now overwhelmed with what we've been saying since half way though the season last year (really earlier than that). Alex and Scott find some time in the studio to talk Dolphins in the gap between losing to New England, and what they fear will happen in Buffalo. They haven't run the funeral bell since 2018... but the audio has been pulled from the grave. Does Miami have cornerstone players? Who are they? Some observations from the loss, and some thoughts about Thursday Night vs. the Bills. Alex makes a mighty effort to stay positive while Scott drops a few more F-bombs (fair warning). We don't usually swear - but there's some in this one, so if the kids are in the car... Miami went to Indy for the NFL opening day and got their clocks cleaned. No part of the game was good, so Alex and Scott cover performances but not much in details. This game left everyone in the NFL world talking about what we've been trying to get out there for years. The last episode of last season said it all... the "Vote of No Confidence" episode of season 7 aimed at Mr Ross. Now we see the results. For the record, we drafted Tyler Warren for the Dolphins.

Scott and Alex debated a few times wether to carry on, but it was always a forgone conclusion that we would. The aqua and orange runs deep. So here's the first episode of our new season, 8 years into it. Alex has taken a positive approach in honor of his son, who most of you know we lost last year. Scott is as jaded as ever with the Dolphins management, so it promises to be a season with come conflict. We will always celebrate wins. In this episode, the two talk about the draft. Alex, for the most part, loves what we did. Scott thinks Grier got some players, but once again missed out on stars, as well as numbers. Which picks? Which players? Listen in to hear from the guys who've seen it all. 

Scott and Alex strive to give you an honest evaluation of the Miami Dolphins every week in the regular season, with episodes in the offseason around Free Agency, changes in management, the draft, and training camp - pre season... This episode marks the end of their 7th season of the podcast. With a fair warning, both men are angry. They regularly strive to balance out negativity with positive aspects of the team, even after a loss, but always tell it like they see it. A lifetime of experience and a long familiarity with each other makes them a good listen, usually. Both feel that their favorite team is mis-managed at every level. Their hope was for the owner to realize that as fans, we want a championship, and that the management in place both at the GM position, as well as the head coaching position, lack the skills and experience to achieve that, Our hope was the Ross would realize it, and make changes so that even he may live to see a competitive, winning team. Our GM has made this the oldest team in the league, strapped by financially burdensome contracts to underperforming players, and critical weaknesses at key positions. Why Stephen Ross issued his statement is beyond our understanding, and has taken away the hope of fans who dig deeper, understand football, and truly care about winning. Mr Ross is a brilliant businessman, but every football decision he has ever made since taking ownership of our team has been bad. The sales of season tickets in October ensure that sellouts continue, he he can laugh all the way to the bank. Losing to the Jets adds insult to injury. The behavior of some players elevates our frustration (Hill). Alex and Scott discuss all this, and wether it is worth our time and expense to continue this podcast in 2025. 

In this Bonus episode, Mike Olivia of Dolphinstalk joins Alex and Scott to talk about his Dec 18 article Why Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel Will Not Be Fired. As we approach the final game of the Dolphins 2024 season, Alex and Scott are looking for hope from Stephen Ross, and if you've listened to our previous couple of podcasts, you'll know we want pretty much the opposite of what Mike's article states. To be fair, Mike wants the same, but makes his case for why he believes it. This is a high energy debate that covers a lot. It was supposed to be 30 minutes but the three men just roll past that mark and don't slow down. If you haven't listened to many episodes this year, this bonus episode is the ONE. 

Tua's absense in the Browns game came as a suprise to us, and Huntley, even with a slow start, upped his game for the win. Scott and Alex talk about the game, but are more focused on the future. The primary topics are more on Grier, the Pro Bowl / all pro selections and the whiffs that would have made us a Superbowl contender, instead of a perpetual mediocre team. The Jets are a train wreck and we predict what will happen in this game, regardless of wether it's Tua or Huntley behind center. Will the Dolphins make the playoffs this year??? The Dolphins gave us all a win on Sunday against the 49ers, despite the tough pick from these two. Sometimes it's great to be wrong. One of our brights spots of the year sealed the deal with his best run of the year, and we celebrate it. What else did we pull out of the game in Miami? Let's spend some time talking about Tyreek Hill. How will the Phins fare in freezing cold Cleveland? Scott has a strong recommendation to close things out in One Cool Thing.

Alex and Scott connect virtually to record an episode late in the week. Because some time has passed since the Texans loss, they don't spend a lot of time talking about the game, but don't leave out the obvious flaws that caused it, and take a few moments to appreciate the players who excelled. They discuss the upcoming 49ers game, and make their predictions on it. Most importantly, they discuss what they would say to our owner, Mr. Ross, if given the opportunity. What would the Two Old Dolphins encourage him to change in order to give us all hope on winning a championship? They ran out of time for our "one cool thing" segment, but promise after the Holiday we will resume it.

Alex and Scott connect virtually to record this episode on a Wednesday. The OT win over the Jets was a stresser and the Dolphins D could do little against a QB that hasn't had a 300 yard day in years, so they are concerned. Jonnu Smith is our hero again and Tua earned this one. Jet's game talk is well mixed in with the challenge the Dolphins have next: The Texans. These two think it's going to be a hard road to travel to earn a win in Houston, and explain why. One cool thing has an announcement from Alex and some meandering recommendation on another wine region on the opposite side of the country from Scott. 

Alex and Scott head into the studio the day after Thanksgiving to talk football. We hear it, we read it, we've talked about it. The Dolphins can't beat winning teams. The Dolphins can't win in big games. The Dolphins rarely win on national TV. The Dolphins can't win in the cold. With the recent exception of beating the Rams on the road on Monday night, they are all true. They will remain true until McDaniel and Tua and this team can prove otherwise. In the last podcast, we talked about the Green Bay game being the perfect opportunity to dispel it all. Not only did this team fail, but they were never really in the game.  Tragic. The Jets are up next, and the Jets are a broken awful team. Listen in for the analysis, the Jets prediction, and one cool thing. Maybe a swear word or two in this one.

Scott and Alex get into the studio on a Victory Monday and celebrate the butt kicking Miami gave to the Patriots. Clearly, the Dolphins are back on track, at least beating up on the bad teams. Lot's of player performances to highlight and positive commentary on coaching too! Now comes the real test. Can McDaniel scheme and play call a win, at night in the cold on national TV against a good team? This is the hurdle he needs to overcome to move past his national narrative. Restaurants are in our one cool thing this week.

Are Scott and Alex happy that the Dolphins beat the Patriots? Of course they are, they're Dolphins fans. Do either of them think it means anything? Alex does, with caveats. Scott, well... listen in to find out. More analysis in this episode than in the last few. Scott shares most of his notes as they are written, from the first half of the game. Both fly off into tangential conversations, but all fit the themes, messages, and topics of the podcast. There are some positive nuggets sprinkled on top. Our Dolphins fell short in the AFC East "championship game" with the Bills on the final game of the regular season, at home, in front of a half-hostile crowd. This podcast goes deep into what happened and suggests who owns the blame for the loss, if you want to cast aspersions. It might not be who you think it is. It's a long episode, but full of thought and passion. Injuries? Of course, but... Scott and Alex ague about a few things, including opinions about our HC. Now that the Dolphins have crapped away a 3 game lead in the east, they have to go to Kansas City for a wild card game. Do they have a chance?  Scott has a fun pick for this week's MVP. Both have a very strongly worded message for the NFL. This is a clean episode up until the last minute. If you are sensitive to foul language, the fist hour is good, and the last minute is laced with an explicative, matching McDaniel's frequent verbiage, you might say, but not at him.

The Miami Dolphins defeated the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve in a nailbiter on the foot of Jason Sanders. Then, the Dolphins travelled to Baltimore on New Years Eve. To say it wasn't pretty would be an understatement. Before Dolfan Nation throws the baby out with the bathwater, consider all the national narratives... swallow them like new years eve hors d'oeuvres and crap them out the next day along with a bit of a hangover. The Dolphins are a good team. They aren't far from being a great team. Listen in to this podcast for the silver/teal lining. It's 2024, and Alex has a message for you all. Alex and Scott are in the studio on an angry Monday to talk about the Eagles game. Final score Dolphins 28, Eagles 24 - at least that SHOULD have been the score, if not for the refs, who acted like the mafia paid them off. Listen to our take on this. Alex and Scott felt the blow Buffalo dealt like any of you, all the way in SoCal. They recorded this episode with a message: It's not over. This is not the end. Amidst the drubbing, concerns about the play of the offensive line, and defense that had no answers to anything, there are still bright spots. Most of the numbers (except for the scoreboard) tell a different story? A certain linebacker that these two nicknamed after a band, well, how did he do in the loss? Where did the line really fail (you probably all know this) and just how bad was it? Why were there no answers from the mastermind DC?
