It was even the subject of a question on “Jeopardy!” Over 500,000 people have subscribed to his weekly newsletter. His work has been covered by The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Financial Times, and others. Eric is also a sought-after speaker, having given talks at MIT, Yale, Google, the United States Military Central Command (CENTCOM), and the Olympic Training Center. His latest book is called “Plays Well with Others." Love – Casanova said, “love is three-quarters curiosity.” That curiosity creates deep knowledge… And that helps you build what researcher John Gottman calls, a “love map.” “Everyone asks how you got together; nobody asks how you stayed together. And it's the latter that is often the real achievement to be proud of.” Your WHO: Take your health, for example. The Framingham study showed that drinking, smoking, and obesity are all quite contagious. If someone you consider a friend becomes obese, your likelihood of obesity increases by 53%. And if the friendship is mutual, the number rises to 171%. "Friends are only there because you want them to be." "Friends make us happier than any other relationship." How to build deeper relationships with friends? Time Be vulnerable -- "Relationships move at the speed of vulnerability." How to make your relationship with your partner better? Do exciting things together - Be proactive Leverage emotional contagion - Associate feelings with events Bill Perkins - "Create memory dividends." You need to learn and grow together John Gottman asks couples to tell their stories... The ones that stick together celebrate the difficulties Profiling - “Humans are prone to seeing meaning when there is none.” There's a fundamental reason that astrologers outnumber astronomers. Emotionally we want a feeling of control over the world around us. We desperately need the world to at least seem to make sense. And for that, we need a story, even if it isn't true. Confirmation bias: what is it? And what are the 3 ways to resist it? Feel accountable Distance before decision Consider the opposite Lying — how can you spot a liar?  The average college student lies in about a third of conversations. For adults, it's 1 in 5. In online dating, 81% of profiles deviate from the truth. And we are terrible at detecting lies, averaging a 54% success rate. So how do we become better at understanding if someone is lying? This system takes patience (so it isn't useful for little lies but can be powerful for bigger issues). “The science overwhelming recommended a nuanced and sophisticated method humans have never tried in the past 5,000 years when attempting to detect lies: being nice. Never be a bad cop, be a friendly journalist. You have to get them to like you. To open up. To talk a lot. And to make a mistake that reveals deception. Don't accuse. Be curious. Optimism – Shawn Achor's Ted Talk (so funny and fast). MET Life saw such great results among happy salespeople that they tried an experiment: they started hiring people based on optimism. It turns out that the optimistic group outsold their more pessimistic counterparts by 19% in year one and 57% in year two. "Writing a book is like telling a joke and having to wait two years to know whether or not it was funny." —ALAIN DE BOTTON Eric writes to start his new book... Henry Thomas Buckle once said: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” I'm here to discuss people. Leveraging the best evidence available—free of platitudes or magical thinking—Eric analyzes multiple sides of an issue before rendering his verdict. What he's uncovered is surprising, counterintuitive, and timely—and will change the way you interact in the world and with those around you just when you need it most. Zachary Slingsby is a writer, short film creator, and founder of Human Factor Media, an award-winning branded storytelling company that has worked with leading brands and publishers to create videos people actually want to watch. We discussed thinking like a customer, planning engaging videos, and effective brand storytelling this week on the On Brand podcast. About Zachary Slingsby Zachary Slingsby is a writer, short film creator, and founder of Human Factor Media, an award-winning branded storytelling company that has worked with leading brands and publishers to create videos people actually want to watch. Zack graduated from Fordham University, received his MFA from the New School, and has published in over a dozen creative and industry publications. He believes the ingredient that makes a literary story great is the same that makes for a great video. His company is based between Nashville, where he lives, and New York City, collaborating with brands to create stories and films instead of ads and interruptions.   Episode Highlights “We're very smart as consumers. We get into trouble when we start thinking like brands,” Zack quipped at the top of the show. You have to hook your audience in the first three seconds (!) of your video. From there, it's about getting them to what he calls the next “propulsive turn.” “The way to capture attention is to put on a show.” That's what Zack noted about brands like Budweiser, MetLife, and Yeti. These brands have turned their social channels into “theatre pages.” What's a theatre page? Being a self-proclaimed word nerd, I had to ask Zack for a definition. He pointed us to MetLife's social videos, which offer small business vignettes such as the story of an immigrant starting a business. “They're only trying to engage you—there's a link to shop if you want” but that's not the primary objective. “Avoid fear-based decision making,” Zack cautions, citing brands like Lexus with their Colin Quinn comedy show and—the biggest example of all—Amazon, with award-winning shows available with Amazon Prime that help them “sell socks.” What brand has made Zack smile recently? Zach mentioned Yeti and Northface and shared a very “on brand” smile on the role the Top Gun movies have played in the experience around the real Top Gun flight school. Guest Michael Roberts had already taken on the identity of musician—specifically singer—while in high school. He was encouraged by his parents to attend college where he could be pursue what he loved while being exposed to a wide range of subjects and experiences through a liberal arts curriculum. It would also be convenient if he attended Dartmouth, the same place his three siblings had already enrolled. And so he did, and he continued to live into the singer identity, graduating into a master's program in vocal music with his sights set on continuing a professional voice career. When he moved to New York and saw others who had gained the discipline and more honed skillset that an undergraduate conservatory experience provided, he realized he might have to supplement his earnings with something else.He landed a job in consulting and, swiftly moving through the ranks, realized strategy consulting let him dwell in big ideas and communicate with a variety of people. Eventually, his experience in strategy and internal consulting at the top levels of a number of global firms, led him to a project setting strategy for marketing operations. This eventually led to his gaining an on-the-job MBA in marketing and to leadership roles and finally the Chief Marketing Officer role. Throughout his business career, he has been able to apply the lessons at the core of making music—taking risks, putting in the work to get better, and learning how to communicate what you need to say to a new audience all the time.In this episode, find out from Michael how getting better at communicating what you have in mind and connecting with people can help make impact in the world…on Roads Taken with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestMichael Roberts is currently Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at MetLife, one of the global leaders in insurance, annuities, and employee benefit programs. Today's Episode is from the 2021 "Believe" Clinic presented by the New Jersey Football Coaches Association. In this episode, Coach Schiano shares simple advice for the head coach and the assistant coach. In his recent experiences he's been in both positions and came to a clear understanding of what each position needs to do to best support the other. What is the Believe Clinic and Who is Eric LeGrand? On October 16, 2010 at MetLife stadium, Eric LeGrand ran down on a kick off for Rutgers and didn't walk off the field. He couldn't move. He couldn't breathe, and Coach Schiano came out on the field knelt and looked down at Eric and said, “Pray.” Becoming paralyzed playing the game he loved didn't change his passion for the game or the lessons he had taken from it. It provided him the courage and inspiration to go out into the world and do more. Eric has shown the world that obstacles can be transformed into opportunities, and he will continue to drive his mission forward until he delivers on Christopher Reeve's dream of a world with empty wheelchairs. To Eric, it is not matter of if he walks again, but rather when. To help Eric on his mission, Coach Schiano, the Rutgers staff, and the New Jersey Football Coaches Association have launched the virtual “Believe” Clinic with all proceeds to benefit "The Christopher Reeves Foundation" on behalf of Eric LeGrand. Were you one of the many people who adopted a pet during the pandemic? You wouldn't be alone because the number of pet adoptions significantly rose during the last couple of years. My husband and I have also been toying with the idea of adopting a pet, which is why I'm so excited about today's episode. Today's episode is all about the real cost of owning a pet, including whether it's worth it or not to get pet insurance. To help me with this topic is Katie Blakeley, Head of Pet Insurance at MetLife. Prior to joining the MetLife team through acquisition, Katie was the CEO of PetFirst Pet Insurance. She had been with the organization since it was founded in 2004 serving in a variety of roles including Marketing Director and Vice President of Business Development. Prior to joining PetFirst, Katie worked in the thoroughbred racing industry. Katie lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband Chris, daughters Maddie and Charlotte, and terrier-mix (Franklin). In this episode, Katie talks about how much money should you be putting aside for monthly pet costs, why you should consider pet insurance, and how much you could expect to pay for it. I also ask Katie all about why breeds and pre-existing conditions matter when it comes to pet insurance rates. This episode is great if you're already a pet owner or you've been considering getting a furry friend (like me) too. For full episode show notes visit: https://jessicamoorhouse.com/319
