In this roundtable discussion, Dr. Huntley is joined by Deborah Shomuyiwa and Jessie Meyer to answer a surprisingly complex but essential question: What is public health? Using plain language and relatable examples, they each break down how public health impacts our everyday lives. From drinking clean water and wearing seatbelts to shaping community policies and creating environments that support healthier choices. Together, they highlight how public health is often quiet when it's working well, why it's different from medicine, and how personal experiences in pharmacy, emergency medical services, and advocacy can all tie back to broader population health. This episode underscores the need to better communicate, celebrate, and "sell" public health so the public can recognize its value long before a crisis hits.   Resources ▶️ Join the PHEC Community ▶️ Visit the PHEC Podcast Show Notes ▶️ DrCHHuntley, Public Health & Epidemiology Consulting

It's part 2 of our dive into the Insect Apocalypse, with our good friend Dr. Jason Dombroskie from the Cornell University Insect Collection! In this part, Jason fills us in on the drivers of the Insect Apocalypse and - most importantly - what we can do about it.This episode was recorded on August 21, 2025 at Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area in Dalton, NY.. Episode NotesDuring the episode, we made the claim that 40 million acres of the US is lawn, and that that area is equal to all of the country's National Parks put together. True? Well, sort of. The claim that the U.S. has about 40 million acres of lawn—roughly equal to all our national parks combined—is only partly true. A NASA-funded study led by Cristina Milesi estimated that turfgrass covers about 128,000 km² (≈31 million acres) of the continental U.S., making it the largest irrigated “crop” in the country (Milesi et al., Environmental Management, 2005; NASA Earth Observatory). Later analyses and popular summaries often round that up to ≈40 million acres (e.g., Scienceline, 2011; LawnStarter, 2023). By comparison, the total land area of all officially designated U.S. National Parks is about 52.4 million acres, while the entire National Park System—which also includes monuments, preserves, and historic sites—covers about 85 million acres (National Park Service, 2024). So while lawns and parks occupy areas of similar magnitude, lawns do not actually equal or exceed the combined area of the national parks. Is it better to mulch leaves on your lawn or leave them be? Here's what we found: It's generally best to mulch your leaves with a mower rather than rake or remove them. Research from Michigan State University found that mowing leaves into small pieces allows them to decompose quickly, returning nutrients to the soil and reducing weeds like dandelions and crabgrass (MSU Extension, “Don't rake leaves — mulch them into your lawn”, 2012). Cornell University studies similarly show that mulched leaves improve soil structure, moisture retention, and microbial activity (Cornell Cooperative Extension, “Leaf Mulching: A Sustainable Alternative”, 2019). However, in garden beds, wooded edges, or under shrubs, it's often better to leave leaves whole, since they provide winter habitat for butterflies, bees, and other invertebrates that overwinter in leaf litter (National Wildlife Federation, “Leave the Leaves for Wildlife”, 2020). The ideal approach is a mix: mow-mulch leaves on grassy areas for turf health and leave them intact where they naturally fall to support biodiversity and soil ecology. In this episode of the Huntley Leadership Podcast, Ron talks with Louis Cain, former staff lead at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Indiana. Together, they break down why small groups often stall—and how Connect Groups provide a structured, scalable, and Spirit-filled next step after Alpha that forms leaders, not just more attendees. Louis shares the exact pipeline his parish used to grow from chaos to clarity—and how to avoid the biggest mistake leaders make: trying to grow without the right people in place. We talk about: - Why your Alpha team determines your Alpha fruit - The key difference between small groups and connect groups - How to identify and recruit the right leaders - The real reason you should move people off your Alpha team - How to build a structure that survives turnover and messiness - Why fellowship needs more than pancakes after Mass Whether you're running Alpha or just want to disciple more people without burning out, this conversation will help you think bigger, lead better, and structure your parish for real growth.

Harry Huntley - https://www.harrymhuntley.com The future of Annapolis is on the ballot this year, and the first big step comes on Tuesday, September 16th, with the Democratic Primary. While there are no contested Republican primaries, Democratic voters will be making critical choices in Ward 1, Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 6, and for Mayor. The winners here will move on to November's general election, where they'll be joined by candidates in Ward 2, Ward 5, Ward 7, and Ward 8. This election could not be more important. Annapolis will elect a new mayor and see a majority of the City Council change hands. If you've ever wanted your voice heard—if you've ever wanted change—this is the time to show up and vote. Local elections determine how our neighborhoods grow, how our streets are maintained, how our taxes are spent, and how our future is shaped. Every single vote matters, and staying home is simply not an option. To help voters make informed decisions, we invited every candidate in a contested race to join us for an unedited podcast conversation. Each candidate was asked the same questions—none of which were provided in advance—and all had the opportunity to answer freely, speak at length, and close with their own pitch to voters. These were not polished campaign ads, but candid conversations meant to give you a better sense of the people behind the campaign signs. We encourage every voter to listen to these conversations. They're raw, honest, and a chance to hear directly from the people who want to represent you. Don't miss this opportunity to make your own decision based on what you hear—not just what you see on a mailer or a yard sign. September 16th is your chance to make a real impact on the future of Annapolis. Mark your calendar, remind your neighbors, and most importantly—show up and vote.
