In this clip from the Wednesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette insider Christoper Carter to ponder winners from Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. Why was Payton Wilson able to meet sky-high expectations at middle linebacker? How has Darnell Washington asserted himself in the passing game alongside names like Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith? Has Yahya Black proven that he's the top reserve offensive lineman behind Cam Heyward, Keeanu Benton and Derrick Harmon? Is Scotty Miller now a lock to make the team after demonstrating chemistry with Aaron Rodgers? How much does Jalen Ramsey appear poised to transform this defense after the late offseason trade that brought him to Pittsburgh in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick? And has Broderick Jones successfully shaken off a rough first week to show he can be a strength for the offensive line? Our duo tackles those questions and more.
On the Tuesday edition of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette sports columnist welcomes insider Ray Fittipaldo to react to Cam Heyward's comments about his contract dispute with the Steelers. Did Heyward have valid critiques of dealing with GM Omar Khan's front office, a year after signing a contract extension? Why don't his comments seem to have helped his favorability among fans? And will he find a resolution that prevents him from missing regular season games? Later, the guys analyze the preseason victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars and what it tells us about the offense. Specifically, they discuss how valuable Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu can be if they're both healthy and playing well at tackle this season; the encouraging contributions of receivers including Roman Wilson and Scotty Miller; and the importance of quick throws from QBs Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson and, eventually, Aaron Rodgers. They also give their thoughts on the overall roster depth and small offseason improvements that may have been overshadowed by big moves for Rodgers, Jonnu Smith, DK Metcalf and Jalen Ramsey.
Did Rudolph deserve more consideration as the starter from coach Mike Tomlin and GM Omar Khan prior to the signing of Aaron Rodgers? Are his preseason results worth taking seriously, especially without key offensive pieces like DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith in the lineup? And if Aaron Rodgers struggles to lead OC Arthur Smith's offense, how quickly should Tomlin consider turning to Rudolph? Paul tackles those questions and more from the win against the Jaguars. What should we make of big nights from Scotty Miller, Roman Wilson and Darnell Washington? How good can Payton Wilson be at middle linebacker? And should Skylar Thompson get a chance to make the roster at QB amid Will Howard's injury?
In this clip from the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner and Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey react to coach Mike Tomlin's long list of 15 Steelers veterans who are being held out of the NFL preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Is it smart to rest names like Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf, Jonnu Smith, Jalen Ramsey, T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Joey Porter Jr.? Or would it be nice to see some of these players as both the offense and defense look to integrate numerous additions? They also ponder what they'd like to see from the guys who will play. How important is it that Broderick Jones show some life at left tackle, as he looks to prove that he's not the weak link in a unit that includes Mason McCormick, Zach Frazier and Troy Fautanu? Can Roman Wilson take advantage of reps as the possible No. 1 receiver in this game? And what can we expect from rookies including Derrick Harmon, Yahya Black, Jack Sawyer and Kaleb Johnson?
Live around 5 p.m., Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to a report that DL Cam Heyward is holding in at Steelers training camp in pursuit of a restructured contract. Does the defensive captain deserve a new deal after signing an extension just a year ago? Especially at his advanced age for his position of 36? Should GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin be devoting even more resources to their defense, which also includes highly paid stars like Jalen Ramsey and T.J. Watt? And how should other deals signed around the NFL factor into these conversations? Paul weighs in on those questions, plus Tomlin's list of players that will be held out of the preseason opener Saturday against the Jaguars. Should younger names like Joey Porter Jr. and Nick Herbig be available? What about newer veterans like Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith? And when should we see those players this preseason, if at all?
Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's a new role for tight end Darnell Washington. Washington's size, Broderick Jones' struggles at tackle, and the strength of the tight end room with Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith has led some fans to consider moving Washington to offensive tackle. But what if there's a better way to utilize his rare combination of size and athleticism? Alan breaks it down. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette insider Christopher Carter to analyze the team's increasing volume of injuries during Steelers training camp. How much will Will Howard's hand injury -- which reportedly will keep him out at least three weeks -- stymie his progress in challenging Mason Rudolph for the No. 2 QB job? How much should fans worry about Calvin Austin III, who's missed several practices as he looks to prove he can be a capable WR2 behind DK Metcalf? And have the absences of names like Jonnu Smith, Joey Porter Jr., Isaac Seumalo and others simply been the normal wear and tear of camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe? Our duo tackles those questions, then talks receivers. Is Roman Wilson starting to turn a corner in his chemistry with QB Aaron Rodgers after a highlight-reel catch Tuesday? Is Scotty Miller still in the mix to make the roster despite failing to see the field much with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson in 2024? Could the Steelers still make a move for a veteran like Amari Cooper? Or are they confident in their depth and other veterans like Robert Woods and Ben Skowronek.
Post-Gazette insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo recap practice at Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. They break down the latest Will Howard injury news, which is that the rookie QB is expected to miss the entire NFL preseason with a broken hand, opening up reps for names like Mason Rudolph and Skyler Thompson. They also analyze the punting battle between Cameron Johnston and Corliss Waitman. And react to QB Aaron Rodgers' comments indicating that he does not expect to play in the preseason opener this weekend. Is coach Mike Tomlin making the right move to protect his QB? Or should Rodgers see some action as he looks to build chemistry with weapons like DK Metcalf, Roman Wilson, Calvin Austin III, Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth. Our guys tackle those questions and more.
Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to the day in Pittsburgh sports news live around 5 p.m. Eastern. He gives his thoughts on whether Steelers GM Omar Khan and coach Mike Tomlin have cultivated enough depth this offseason. Yes, they made aggressive moves for big veteran names like Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith and DK Metcalf to surround existing stars like T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward and Joey Porter Jr. But is the next layer of talent enough to compete with the best in the NFL? Later, he weighs in on the Pirates' latest home win against the San Francisco Giants and the momentum they've built the past couple of weeks despite an MLB trade deadline that disappointed many fans.
On the Tuesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey and insider Ray Fittipaldo react to the first full week of Steelers training camp. Why does coach Mike Tomlin seem more upbeat that usual? And what does it signal for his plans as he welcomes new veterans including Aaron Rodgers, Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith and DK Metcalf to his lineup this coming season? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders some positional flexibility. How much could we see TE Darnell Washington lining up at tackles after he dominated backs-on-backers drills over the weekend? Could he apply pressure to names like Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu? And could Mark Robinson make the team at fullback with the linebacker room loaded with talent including Patrick Queen, Payton Wilson and Carson Bruener?
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss injury updates with Joey Porter Jr. returning to practice, Alex Highsmith and Calvin Austin III still out, Will Howard and Jonnu Smith leaving early and more. We also discuss the opportunity in front of Roman Wilson and how it's his time to shine, coming off his best practice. Speaking of, will Broderick Jones continue to stack good practices? Is there a disaster situation that would cause them to pivot from their QB plan during the 2026 draft? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Steelers depth chart is out. There were a few takeaways. One of them being the bloom being off the rose that is Roman Wilson in training camp, who is currently listed as their 5th receiver. The training camp returns on Wilson are disappointing. How much do we take this into account given how we know Mike Tomlin claims to not pay attention to his early depth charts? We are hearing people watching practice say Scotty Miller has looked noticeably better than Wilson. The guys dug into Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth being listed together as TE1. And are we in for a punter battle for the ages? Former NFL GM Michael Lombardi joined the show. The guys asked Michael about the idea of a Terry McLaurin trade and if the Steelers have a shot to make it happen. Michael talked about some major differences he's finding between the college and pro game. Will the Steelers have success with Aaron Rodgers? He thinks arm strength is one of the most overrated attributes for a QB. Michael thinks the Steelers need to win a playoff game to claim success in 2025. The guys asked Michael about the Steelers change in philosophy with some flashy free agent moves. Michael listed some guys he feels like played for the Steelers that should get more Hall of Fame consideration. Steelers Auction House – Round 2.

On the Friday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by Edgar Snyder & Associates, Post-Gazette insiders Christopher Carter and Brian Batko preview the "Friday Night Lights" practice of Steelers training camp at Latrobe Memorial Stadium. The explain why patience is still warrented for Aaron Rodgers amid inconsistency in practices so far, as he works to get on the same page as OC Arthur Smith and teammates like DK Metcalf, Pat Freiermuth, Calvin Austin III, Jonnu Smith and Roman Wilson. They also explain why RB Kaleb Johnson, DL Derrick Harmon and OL Broderick Jones are the top names to watch as pads go on for the hard-hitting practice that many fans will get to see.
Alan Saunders and Zachary Smith discuss all things Pittsburgh Steelers. On today's episode, we discuss the DBs bringing the juice to a feisty practice without pads. Juan Thornhill and Jalen Ramsey are known for their trash talk and Thursday was no exception. Thornhill and Jonnu Smith regularly went at it. Aaron Rodgers had a really strong day. Roman Wilson made the play of camp so far, and he will need to show much more of that going forward. How creative will Arthur Smith get, and do we need to adjust the roster math to account for it? Should coach Mike Tomlin and OC Arthur Smith protect their 41-year-old veteran QB but giving him only limited action in NFL exhibition games? Or is playing time important to helping him pick up the offense and get on the same page with playmakers including DK Metcalf, Jaylen Warren, Pat Freiermuth, Jonnu Smith, Calvin Austin III, Darnell Washington and Roman Wilson? Later, Paul weighs in on the Pirates decision to trade Ke'Bryan Hayes for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and prospect Sammy Stafura ahead of the MLB trade deadline. And what it could mean for potential deals involving Mitch Keller and David Bednar.
Were those comments fair? Misinterpreted? Or a sour-grapes criticism of his former team as coach Mike Tomlin moves on with big additions including Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith? Paul tackles those questions, plus the biggest developments from the first padded practice of training camp. From offensive line questions relating to young players such as Broderick Jones, Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick. To Rodgers' mastery of OC Arthur Smith's offense alongside names like Jaylen Warren and Calvin Austin III. Then later, Paul opines on the latest MLB trade deadline chatter relating to GM Ben Cherington and the Pirates.
Post-Gazette insiders Gerry Dulac and Ray Fittipaldo recap a rainy practice at Steelers training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe. They explain why the fireworks of a padded practice will need to wait after coach Mike Tomlin's squad was forced inside by stormy weather. And they anticipate storylines to watch when players can start hitting full-speed Wednesday. From Kaleb Johnson wanting to prove he can handle pass protection in the backs-on-backers drill like Jaylen Warren did a few years back; to Derrick Harmon, Jack Sawyer and Yahya Black making their debuts in a hard-hitting setting; to Broderick Jones proving he's ready to handle left tackle duties following the departure of Dan Moore Jr. via NFL free agency; and Jalen Ramsey showing the physicality he can bring to the secondary. Gerry also recaps a conversation with OC Arthur Smith as he incorporates new faces like Aaron Rodgers, DK Metcalf and Jonnu Smith into the offense.
Rod Villagomez and Munaf Manji talk NFL fantasy football AFC east position battles. The AFC East may not boast the flashiest fantasy options, but its positional battles could provide league-winning value for savvy managers. Hosts Munaf Manji and Rod Villagomez dissected the division's key situations with a focus on deep-league stashes and late-round upside. In Buffalo, James Cook remains the lead back after averaging 4.9 yards per carry and scoring 18 touchdowns, but Munaf and Rod spotlighted Ray Davis, who logged 478 rushing and 189 receiving yards with six total touchdowns, as the preferred backup over Ty Johnson. The Bills' receiver room also offers intrigue: Khalil Shakir led with 120 targets for 995 yards and four touchdowns, but Keon Coleman, who had 578 yards and four scores as a rookie, was pegged for a breakout as he battles newcomer Joshua Palmer for the WR2 role. For Miami, the tight end room is unsettled after Jonnu Smith's departure, creating opportunities for Darren Waller, Pharaoh Brown or Julian Hill. At receiver, Munaf pushed Nick Westbrook-Akene, who tallied 497 yards and nine touchdowns on 60 targets, as a touchdown-dependent but intriguing flex option over Malik Washington, who managed 223 yards on 36 targets. In New York, the focus shifted to the WR3 battle between veteran Alan Lazard, who had 530 yards and six touchdowns, and rookie Arian Smith, a dynamic Georgia product with 817 collegiate yards and four touchdowns. Both hosts leaned toward Smith for long-term value while framing Justin Fields' season as a redemption tour in a relatively low-pressure environment, making him a viable QB2 with upside. In New England, Ramondre Stevenson's 14 career fumbles, half of which came last season, put him on thin ice, opening the door for rookie Trevion Henderson, a second-round pick from Ohio State, to carve out a meaningful role. Demario Douglas led Patriots receivers with 621 yards, but Munaf identified 6'4” veteran Mac Hollins, who scored five touchdowns last season, as a sneaky red-zone threat and deep sleeper, particularly if Stefon Diggs needs time to recover from his ACL injury. The episode concluded with a shared philosophy: these AFC East names may not headline drafts, but they are exactly the types of players who become early-season waiver-wire priorities. Drafting them late provides a strategic edge, especially in deeper leagues or superflex formats where depth and upside separate contenders from pretenders. As Munaf put it, these are the players “you might as well just pick up and hope for the best.” This breakdown of Buffalo's backfield, Miami's receiving depth, the Jets' WR3 competition, and New England's RB and WR rooms offers actionable insights for managers looking to squeeze value from one of the NFL's less-heralded divisions. Why Metcalf is optimistic about the way OC Arthur Smith plans to use him. And how other pieces including linemen Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu; backs Jaylen Warren and Kaleb Johnson; tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith; and receivers Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson still have time to come togehter. It's Jason Fitz and Buck Reising in for Jonas and LaVar on today's 'Best of' edition of the show! They open things up with their thoughts and reactions to the Knicks hiring Mike Brown as their next head coach. Do they see him as an upgrade over Tom Thibodeau? Then they get into the Lakers signing DeAndre Ayton... how will he fit with the existing pieces? That leads into a conversation on the importance of ownership in a team's success, lamenting the fact that there's no consequence for sustained incompetence. Buck and Fitz also look ahead to the season in store for the Pittsburgh Steelers. How far can a 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers take them? What do they think of the decision to trade Minkah Fitzpatrick for Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith?See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
