The episode's title is a quote from Quantum of Solace, specifically the scene where Mathis attempts to get to the bottom of Bond's sleep problems. In the Bond films we don't see our hero getting healthy, natural sleep all that often. Perhaps because, as Hitchcock famously asserted, ‘drama is life with the dull bits cut out', we're supposed to assume Bond sleeps like a normal human being when we're not looking. On the occasions where we do see Bond waking up, it's usually because he's been drugged or knocked unconscious. But this is a different story in the books. David has gone back through Fleming's 14 Bond books and found there are more than 400 direct references to sleep - that's more than 30 per book! Might this suggest that Fleming himself had an interesting relationship with sleep that he transposed into his character? There are definite patterns across the books, which David guides us through here, highlighting particularly intriguing examples from Casino Royale, Live and Let Die, Moonraker, From Russia, With Love and Thunderball. Is there anything from the Bond films and the Fleming books we can use to help us address our own sleep problems? Both Alex and David have wrestled with sleep issues their entire lives, including experiencing prolonged periods of insomnia. But there are differences… Alex is a night owl, an evening person, someone who has no issue being wide awake really late at night. David is the opposite, a lark, who is mentally and physically most alert early in the morning. Although neither Alex nor David are sleep scientists (and sleep science as an academic discipline is still very new!), both have put in a lot of effort to resolving their sleep issues, including reading some of the same books - sometimes with different results! Here, both talk through the approaches they've tried and tested over the years and reveal how they have reframed their relationships with sleep. Sleep hygiene is key for both of them. How does alcohol, caffeine and what we do in the hour before bed make a difference? Alex and David also tackle: Why is it important to know your chronotype (night owl/morning lark, etc)? How does insomnia relate to anxiety? What happens if we never sleep? (Like Gustav Graves in Die Another Day) Should we be concerned if we don't dream? If we experience night terrors (like Bond does in the books) how can we deal with these? What are the ups and downs of sleeping pills? (There are a lot of them in Fleming!) How do sleep rhythms differ internationally? Why is jet lag so evil? What's the sun got to do with sleep? Why is it sometimes more difficult to sleep in hotels than home? How does Fleming's Bond always wake up on time without an alarm clock? And what is his standard wake up time? What chronotype does that make him?

Alex Pardo's journey in real estate began with the ambition many entrepreneurs share: pursuing time freedom and financial independence. Starting in 2005, he quickly made a name for himself by wholesaling and flipping single-family houses in Miami, closing over 700 transactions. Despite the financial benefits and the rewards of building a thriving business, Alex soon realized that the hustle and constant deal-chasing left him unfulfilled and drained. The structure of the business, with its significant overhead costs and dependency on continuous transactions, soon felt more like a burden than a source of joy. Even though Alex managed a capable team, the daily grind and the lack of a consistent cash flow were at odds with his deeper goals and vision for life. The Wholesaling Grind: An Unfulfilling SuccessAlex Pardo's journey in real estate began like many ambitious entrepreneurs: driven by the promise of time freedom and financial independence. In 2005, he launched into wholesaling and flipping single-family houses in Miami, eventually closing over 700 transactions. Though this line of work generated substantial revenue, it wasn't long before Pardo realized that the grind of constantly chasing deals didn't offer the joy and fulfillment he sought. He felt trapped within his business as if he had built prison walls around it without having the key to escape.Despite having a successful team and well-structured systems, the business model was misaligned with his vision. Instead of delivering the time freedom he desired, it consumed his mental and emotional energy. The Epiphany: Aligning Business with Personal VisionIn 2018, during a cruise with his wife, Alex experienced a pivotal moment. Even though he was physically on vacation, his mind was consumed by business concerns, preventing him from being fully present. This lack of fulfillment prompted him to take a deeper look at his goals and the business model sustaining them. It became clear that his wholesaling business, despite its financial rewards, did not resonate with his deeper life goals.Realigning with his vision required more than a superficial change; it called for a complete overhaul. He recognized that while the business was financially healthy on the surface, it was not providing the bottom-line profitability or personal satisfaction he wanted. He made more money as a solopreneur in earlier years than he did running a large team with significant overhead.Transition to Self-Storage: A Strategic PivotAfter shutting down his wholesaling business, Alex took a sabbatical to reconnect with his personal goals and spiritual beliefs. This period of reflection led him to identify self-storage as a better-aligned business model. Self-storage offered the stability and cash flow he sought, without the constant need to chase new deals. It also provided a lower-maintenance option with fewer moving parts compared to wholesaling. Why Self-Storage?Self-storage presented several advantages, including its low-maintenance nature and the ability to generate consistent cash flow. Unlike the transactional and high-overhead model of wholesaling, self-storage could provide long-term financial security. It also allowed for the potential of building a business that required fewer employees and could be more seamlessly systematized and automated.Importance of Alignment and CommunityA recurring theme in Alex's story is the importance of aligning one's business with personal goals and values. He stresses the need for entrepreneurs to understand their vision and create business models that support that vision. This alignment ensures long-term satisfaction and fulfillment, going beyond mere financial success. Both Alex and Jay emphasize the significance of faith and surrounding oneself with a supportive community. Alex's faith has been a cornerstone of his journey, providing

Michael explained that while there is a narrative of people moving from larger cities to smaller ones because of increased housing affordability, numbers don't explain other factors such as big-city appeal. He also said while starts are used to measure housing demand, completions add a layer of understanding to where the housing economy is going. Both Alex and Michael agreed that labor continues to be a deciding factor in slowing growth of housing stock, which Michael attributed partly to an overreliance on the baby boomer generation which has now led to our current labour crisis. Alex also pointed to automation and modular construction as a possible path out of a labour shortage. The latest headlines include Daily Commercial News staff writer Angela Gismondi has a story about how Atlantic Canada is feeling pressure due to housing and immigration challenges in addition to a labour pinch, and a story about the recent Mass Timber Seminar Conference at George Brown College in Toronto which pitched mass timber technology as part of a collective solution to the housing crisis. Chamberlain opted for Final Fantasy XVI and have convinced no one else that it is a reasonable use of leisure time. Chance continues to love and hate Overwatch 2, but he has also watched a ton of movies, heartily recommending both They Cloned Tyrone and not giving Blizzard any more money.

Throughout those years, Alex experienced unbearable physical pain and unbearable loss. Loss of playing sports, of going to her dream college, of friends who were busy living their lives, and of living a thriving life.  While those losses are truly tragic, Alex gained a fighter mentality, a determination to never give up, a stronger faith and trust in God, and a desire to serve and love others. Our discussion is based on her book My Promise to Alex: Through Pain Comes Purpose. You'll hear Jody describe the numerous obstacles and challenges she and Alex faced. Yet, each time mother and daughter sought God's direction and then persevered. We conclude the Heart Triad portion of our Enneagram ConvoCast series with a returning guest and member of our community, Alex! Both Alex and Tom share their motivations, fears, stress, and security as a Type Four (the Individualist or Romantic). As members of our YOB community, how does their Four-ness manifest in the realms of sexuality, masculinity, and relating with other men? Tom and Alex discuss the qualities they love about being Fours: artistic, empathetic, and yes, unique. In times of security they're objective and productive, taking action and creating things that add beauty to the world. A Four's "superpower" is empathy, giving others permission to "feel all the feels" with them, too. Tom and Alex also dive into their dark side of Four-ness: the neediness, the manipulation, the constant craving for approval, particularly from other men. Fours are often described as people who perceive lacking a critical "missing piece," and as queer or SSA men this hits especially deep for Tom and Alex. In adolescence did they miss some critical component for masculinity or sexuality, along with connecting with the other boys? What is the path forward for a Four in those whirlwinds of emotional stress? Pastor Burns was described by Time magazine as "Donald Trump's Top Pastor" and named one of the "16 People Who Shaped the 2016 Presidential Election" by Yahoo! News.  Originally, Pastor Burns voted democratic, but soon God got a hold of his heart and helped him realize that the democratic party did not stand on the Word of God or stand for truth at all.    At the time of this episodes recording, Alex was in Colorado Springs, Colorado for an event hosted by Clay Clark. On this episode, Pastor Mark and Alex discuss the evils that are going on in this world, such as racism and the things that are going on in the Biden administration currently. If we look at what the Biden administration is doing, we can see that the agenda is one that does not honor God, nor does it protect the American people. Both Alex and Pastor Burns believe that Jesus needs to do something in this country for it to return to the way that God has intended it to be. Jesus can change it, no man can.  One of the topics that is discussed heavily in this episode is racism. The fact of the matter is that racism is a sin problem, not a skin color problem. The majority of Americans have fallen from that truth. Other Americans have a tendency to make things seem worse than they are when it comes to the topic. In all areas, it is sin and Jesus needs to change the heart of those who are racist.--- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/alexander-stone/support

Hello our beautiful friends! We are back with another exciting Ask Me Anything episode. This time, we discuss something that most of us don't want to face – our internet addiction. Let's admit this - there is something about new technologies, the Internet and social media that makes us feel connected with the rest of the world. The issue is, if we overdo it, we become addicted and can injure ourselves. In this conversation, we share our tips on how to consume social media mindfully.   Full show notes: https://www.ikonns.com/podcast/61   In today's ‘Ask Me Anything' episode, we're going to answer these 3 fundamental questions: Are there any boundaries on the Internet?  How to use technology and not to be used by it? How to consume content in social media? Are there any boundaries on the Internet?  Nowadays there is an infinite amount of content and, therefore, scrolling has become infinite. The way social media tools are designed, Alex explains, is to get us hooked, because the more time we spend on social media, the more money these social platforms gain, because they capture our attention, and attention equals money. And this is the currency we all play with – attention. How to use technology and not to be used by it? Alex's recommendation is to set limits for yourself. iOS programs like Screen Time help monitor how you consume your gadget and be aware of how you spend your time. You can even set parental control on yourself and set time limits on using different apps with Downtime feature. Alex assures that the best way you do your best work is by not multitasking. He suggests to turn off distracting notifications and do just one thing at a time.   “We have to look at the root cause of why we are addicted to being distracted from our reality” – Alex Ikonn   Alex thinks that a lot of as pass out because of the loneliness in some way or another. In order to change this, we need to follow these steps: Become aware Take responsibility Take action How to consume content in social media? Mimi believes that we have to be mindful about the fact that social media consumption is like food consumption. We have to become mindful consumers, we have to limit ourselves and care about the quality versus the quantity. Mimi explains that we should come at the first place, and the consumption of social media and content creation come after. The resistance voice make us doing all indulgences that, over a period of time, are going to ruin our lives and will make us be incapable to do things that truly matter.   Both Alex and Mimi believe there is a lot of value that comes with the Internet. Social media in itself isn't evil, it can be so positive and beneficial. But, in order to create some healthy boundaries, we all need to learn how to curate people and content we consume on a daily basis.    “We need to implement mindful consumption of individuals that inspire us rather than individuals that make us compare ourselves to others” – Mimi Ikonn

In today's episode Alex and Mimi explore what many would say is the most important thing in life... MONEY!! But does having more of it make you happy or do we just need to create an abundance mindset? What's your relationship with money, we'll find out in this episode. Both Alex and Mimi have come from very poor upbringings. Even though Mimi would describe her family growing up as middle class, the middle class Azerbaijan is way below the lower class in the US or Europe. Alex's family life was very similar growing up in the Soviet Union, they both lived in 1 bedroom apartments where their parents would sleep on the sofa, while all the kids would share a bedroom. Bargain hunting and penny counting was the only way to simply put a meal on the table. This is a very deep episode that explores the mindset shift that you have to undertake if you want to go from not having any money to what to do when you finally get some. And every step in between. Foodbank's to Kensington. “Money wants to go to people who have a need to do something with it, people who put their money to work rather than consuming” - Alex Ikonn [37:30]   The main lesson Alex and Mimi want you to take away from this, is moving your mindset from one of scarcity to one of abundance. We all know of situations where people have lost friends or even family member from a dispute over a relatively small amount of cash. Clinging onto every penny won't get you anywhere in life. Similarly, we know that when we feel full and our basic needs are met, our mental energy and focus is available to be put to work and attract more money and opportunities into our lives. Now this doesn't mean you should go out and max your credit cards, if you even have a credit card, nor should even contemplate a payday loan. Negative compound interest is your worst enemy and will hold you in debt for a long time. Remember that spending future money is still money you will have to earn at some point. If you can't pay it back today, there's a good chance you'll find it difficult to pay it back tomorrow. The good thing is compound interest works the other way too. So paying off your debt and then saving can gain you some great interest over time. “You affirm and reaffirm to yourself everyday what you manifest” - Mimi Ikonn [20:50] Back to the abundance part… this really is a game of reframing the conversation you tell yourself. Are you regularly saying:   A - ‘I couldn't ever do that, I can't afford it' Or are you saying B - ‘I choose to invest my money elsewhere, spending to fulfill a specific purpose'.   Are you saying you are ‘broke'? This genuinely means you feel you are broken. Let's be clear, we don't believe you are broken! You should be saying ‘You are working on fixing your financial future by actionally taking steps in the right direction'. Do you see and feel the difference in these two ways of talking to yourself? If so this is only the start. What we also cover in this episode: How do your parents talk about money? This shapes your own financial values Don't believe you're saving if at the same time you're in debt Valuing your own worth and developing the idea of feeling full How to not lose relationships over money When is it a good time to rent or buy, why it's better to rent in a big city How the richest people are less consumers than you think Become an investor in yourself and reap the rewards Visualisation and putting in the hard work Being wealthy is living in your means and not spending more than you earn Money and energy, it's all about a transfer from one form to the other. What exactly is a security token? How is it expressed on the blockchain? How is it traded? Why is a security token better than an electronic share? What are the downsides? And, beyond all that, what are the limits of tokenization? And what are the political and philosophical implications? On this episode of The Medium Rules, Alan is joined in the HBA podcast studio by Alex Blum and Peter Lyons, respectively the CEO and CIO of the NYS-based security token platform, Atomic Capital. Atomic Capital is split up into three lines of business – advisory, broker-dealer, and investment bank/capital raising. In this episode of The Medium Rules, Alan and his guests walk through the basics of security tokens, i.e., what are they, how are they sold and how are they traded? Alan then engages Alex and Peter in a more philosophical conversation related to global inequality, disruption, decentralization, and anarchism. Both Alex and Peter have deep experience in the global non-profit/NGO sector – Alex at the Peace Corps and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Peter at the World Economic Forum.
