#303 - Good Nutrition Habits in the Time of Crisis with Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon

Matt and Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon, Director of Curriculum at Precision Nutrition, discuss a challenge many are facing right now -- practicing good nutrition habits in this time of crisis. With families locked down and cutoff from their normal eating and exercise schedules, some have struggled to make healthy food choices. Dr. Scott-Dixon offers some advice for staying grounded, nutritionally and mentally, while on coronavirus lockdown.   Krista’s tips: Write down your intent for the day, at the beginning of each day. Krista actually likes to call it your commitment. This includes your to-do list, but it’s not limited to it. A commitment could be something broad like, “I’m going to be supportive of someone else today,” or “I’m going to be optimistic today.” Committing to one small thing each day can help you build a more positive mindset. Develop a structure, with small habits. Pick one small thing everyday that you can do to create a sense of order and structure to your day. It can be something as simple as “I’m going to eat lunch at 12:00pm today.” Constructing your routine slowly results in lasting habit changes. Think like a restaurant, and set hours for your kitchen. Krista closes her kitchen between the hours of 2 and 4pm, because in her experience, no good snack decisions are made then! It’s only two hours, she says, so you can hold out until dinner. Create a feedback loop for evaluating your day. Every day, spend a bit of time analyzing what went well (don’t focus on the struggles) and why. Then try to do a little more of that the next day. By bookending your day with a statement of intent and then an evaluation of the positives, you can learn to stay positive and bring some order to an otherwise chaotic world.   You can find Dr. Krista at: Precision Nutrition: https://www.precisionnutrition.com Coalition of Health and Fitness Leaders: https://healthandfitnesscoalition.com   Man's Search for Meaning by Victor Frankl: https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/dp/080701429X     Discounts Get 50% off your first month of Standard, Premium OR Club plus a FREE gift card to help you build a home gym. “Today is the slowest things are going to be” On this week’s episode of Uncorked, Steph sits down with the outgoing CEO of Mountain Equipment Co-op, David Lebistour, to look back at what came before his 11 years as CEO, and to look forward to life after MEC. David’s career was not one he could have foreseen, but one common denominator throughout his life has been his openness to change. “If you are open to life as it comes at you, it gives opportunities to go to places that you would never had dreamed of” From his early aspirations of becoming a professional surf-sailor, to working as a designer in South Africa, to immigrating to Canada in his 40s and struggling to find work, to eventually finding a career than aligned with his passion at MEC, David has lived a life full of unpredictable change and adventure, and he has no plans to slow down. Since surrendering to the reality that a career as a professional athlete was not in the cards, David has remained committed to continue learning into adulthood. He has taken on a new athletic pursuit every 5 years since moving to Canada, embracing the activities that British Columbia has to offer. “If I look back on my life, I’ve always striven to be of use, utility, and value, but at the same time, I’ve always maintained a very strong passion in my life. And those two have very seldom been the same thing. My career and my passion have not always aligned, but I’ve always had a very strong passion for the activities that have been part of my life the whole way through … MEC is probably the only time in my life where my passion + my career have lined-up”. CREATING YOURSELF Every minute of every day, you are creating yourself. Am I being dramatic? Am I playing with words? Am I making a bold statement just to get your attention? No, no, and no. I’m expressing an idea that plays out in my life, in your life, and the lives of today’s guests. The reality that we find ourselves in 24/7 is a self-creation spun from the vivid narratives in our minds. Every aspect of your life, your relationships, your wealth or poverty, your happiness or unhappiness is a result of a story you tell yourself, focus on, and develop through a series of conscious and unconscious thoughts. You will experience the things I just wrote about as you listen to the compelling story of Natalie and Joeel Rivera, a couple drawn together by the irresistible pull of their similar unconscious stories. They met through a series of “random” events, what some would call coincidences. They developed a creative business partnership; then they married. Natalie and Joeel were on a mission to relieve suffering in the world. They began with a print magazine. Like many sensitive entrepreneurs, they felt the vibrations of change in our global economy. They understood that the world was moving toward a digital way of life. They transformed their print magazine into a digital one that could reach a worldwide audience at lighting speed. They made the right choice and started riding a wave of success. Without warning, their dream life exploded when Joeel became bedridden with an unknown illness that ravaged him for more than a year. Pay close attention now. This horrible experience was only a tragedy if the couple allowed it to be. Huh? That’s right. Their earnings crashed, Natalie became Joeel’s primary caregiver, and they chose to see this entire experience as a journey toward joy and more success. And that is exactly what it became. You will not be able to listen to their story and remain the same person after you’ve heard it. You will have grown, you will be richer and stronger, even if you don’t feel it immediately. You will be one step closer to creating an empowering story that in turn creates an unstoppable version of you. Joeel’s illness led to his discovery of the value he could offer people with online education. He and Natalie created more than 75 online courses to help people like me and you to tap into our passions and natural abilities and monetize them while impacting the lives of others. Their journey can become your adventurous journey of creating yourself. Ever had an experience that was so profound it altered you forever? Ever had a once in a lifetime experience that brought you so much joy? I'm sure you have. But those moments can be few and far between and many times our of our control. While I (Phil Svitek) truly wish upon you those extraordinarily beautiful moments in your life, I am more concerned with how you find meaning in the everyday. The moments that are much more quiet and subdued. The ones that could even be classified as mundane like laundry, an activity that has to be repeated over and over throughout life. These types of moments we don't talk about much. They're certainly not written about it books or shown on TV. If we talk about activities such as doing laundry with anyone it's usually in a begrudging manner. Like, “crap, I have to do laundry.” But even though we don't talk about them or consider them much, I want to pose to you that these moments are equally as profound as the once-in-a-lifetime events. Maybe even more so. Here's why. Because if we can't learn to find meaning in the everyday then we'll end up depressed. You can't just go from one amazing experience to another amazing experience. More often times than not, these monotonous moments amount to more of our time than the special ones. Even successful people that you admire have moments of down time that they need to fill. It is how we fill these moments that defines us. And in this lesson I explore questions such as these and offers insights from the stoics, Viktor Frankl (author of Man's Search for Meaning), Thomas Edison, Dan Millman (author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior) and artist Andy Goldsworthy to derive at a solution. If you'd like to experience more meaning from life, this episode is for you. Be sure to leave a comment. Having just returned from a silent meditation retreat, Annette shares her experience spending several days in silence in the desert. Her year begins with thoughts about meaning-making and self-compassion. She continues her post-law journey living in “experimental” mode, and observing what energizes her (helping others, yes; working for the pursuit of money, no). She recalls how she moved through much of her early life conforming to a mold of a good student who could get a good job, and hiding those parts of herself that might not have fit that mold. Now she seeks to make those unseen parts more visible and to show up as her whole self in life. Meanwhile, Sarah finds herself gripped, on and off, with debilitating depression. She considers the possible contributing factors to the depression, including being postpartum, the physical isolation and time constraints stemming from being a stay-at-home mom, and the absence of creative work in her life. She describes the difficulty of creating distance between herself and her illness and how, on many days, simply getting out of bed is challenging. This year, she simply seeks to live her life, with all its contradictions. Resources and References: Joshua Tree Retreat Center: http://jtrcc.org/ Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor E.
