In the current "attention economy," which has resulted in plummeting literacy rates and the almost wanton neglect of various cultural practices, what significance does culture even have? Why seek to preserve something our age has decided doesn't have to exist? Perhaps Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game can be read as an answer to those questions. The order of monastic scholars in the novel exists mainly to remember what others were happy to consign to oblivion. In this episode, Phil and JF discuss Hesse's ideas on the order and its sacred game in terms of how they might help us meet the challenge facing anyone who believes the value of culture can't be expressed in dollars and cents. Talking Out Your Glass podcast

Elliot Walker: Winner of Blown Away 2 Sculpting and blowing molten glass, Elliot Walker creates still life sculpture inspired by the paintings of Dutch masters. Though exquisite to look at, it was the combination of refined glassblowing skill with the humor and satire of his work that resulted in Walker winning the Netflix series, Blown Away 2. For the moment, prized residencies at both the Corning Museum of Glass and the Pittsburgh Glass Center are on hold due to Covid. But the artist works feverishly on new commissioned works, facilitates a number of creations for several noted designers and artists, and carries out his new duties as champion of marblemedia’s glassblowing competition show. For Walker, getting to know his fellow contestants on Blown Away 2 and watching them work made his participation on the show worthwhile. “It showed me how welcoming and inspiring the global fraternity of furnace glass workers is.”  Messums, London, hosted Walker’s inaugural solo show from January 28 through February13, 2021. Plenty, an irreverent look at the culture of excess, presented a new series of sculpture inspired by 17th– century Dutch Vanitas paintings. Employing almost every conceivable technique, the artist transformed classic still life painting objects into ethereal, sculptural cameos that speak both of bounty and its impermanence. Walker’s remarkable technical skills include complex and subtle coloring applications, along with cold processes like cutting and polishing, surface decoration and texturing, adding depth and dazzling intricacy to his forms.  A show statement from Messums Fine Art Ltd, read: “Elliot is an exciting and talented artist bringing a conceptual edge to a traditional craft with all the hallmarks of a mould breaker…We have been watching the seam between craft and art break over the years, and Elliot’s work irreverently celebrates glass working whilst engaging with our contemporary concerns and pleasures.” Growing up in Wolverhampton, England, an academic at school, Walker took his A-Levels in science, chemistry and biology. As a boy, he describes himself, as ‘out-doorsy,’ always creating and making things, mostly with pebbles and sticks, inspired by British sculptor and environmentalist, Andy Goldsworthy. He never thought of being an artist when he was a kid because it wasn’t “sensible.” With a BA in psychology from Bangor University in North Wales, Walker discovered glass at university, taking night classes in stained glass windows. Following his MA in applied arts from Wolverhampton University, the artist established a studio in Camden. He now lives and works in Hertfordshire with his life partner, colleague and fellow glassblower Bethany Wood. She is the owner of the Blowfish art gallery, currently selling Walker’s works online. Touted as one of the United Kingdom’s finest rising glass stars, Walker has become one of the most active and inspiring artists of his generation. He developed his basic skills and necessary foundations as a creator by studying glass-making in the Stourbridge Glass Quarter, an historic place that has been associated with the glass industry for more than 400 years. He worked for glassblowing legend Peter Layton for about eight years as a part of his London studio team. The artist is also part of a group called Bandits of Glass, where the process of creation is given more importance than the final piece itself.  Says Walker: “I am a dedicated experimenter with my chosen material and am constantly trying to challenge myself and the audiences of my work to abandon many preconceptions of the material.”

A trip to the art supply store or website is something most of us enjoy. We're not just stocking up, but entertaining possibilities, wondering what a new color of paint or kind of brush or sculptural tool could bring to our work. Exploring new materials is part of what we do as artists. But there's also a world of art materials and processes available at no cost, outside in nature. What can be done with sticks, dirt, rocks, feathers, bones, and other bits of nature? Today we'll toss around some ideas for using natural objects as art materials and tools, and forces of nature as part of the art process. Many artists enjoy collecting natural objects for their beauty and unique aspects but also for specific purposes in the studios. Using materials from the natural world opens up many possibilities for mark-making, textural effects, and for using processes such as allowing weather to affect a piece by placing it outside or printing from rusted metal. The impulse to create with natural materials goes back to childhood for many of us when we made snow forts and tiny environments from sticks and rocks, or sealed autumn leaves between sheets of wax paper. The connection to nature we felt then can be extended into our adult practices as an expression of our experiences in the landscape. Many materials produce unique effects that can't be found in commercially available supplies, such as sticks and dried plant stalks for drawing, dried organic material mixed into paint, and unique natural dyes. Sometimes the personal meaning of a work is enhanced by the origin of the material such as sand from a particular beach that the artist visited. Artists also develop inventive ways of interacting with natural forces as part of their practices. The British artist Andy Goldsworthy uses both objects from nature and its processes to create ephemeral sculptures of ice, earth, and fallen leaves, which he then documents in stunning photographs. Other artists bury drawings or paintings in the ground to let the earth color and erode them or set them in the rain to wash them out. Irish artist Nuala Clarke created an installation piece using bits of cloth that washed up on the beach that were beautifully weathered and worn, titled The Mariner's Laundry. Expanding our creative vision to what nature and its processes can bring to our work is exciting and a way to bring your own experience of nature and natural processes and forces to your work. Plant Photography Tips:Make sure the light is just right. On a bright day “everything just glows” and you can't capture the actual colours of a plant. Best times for nature photography are early in the morning, when it's overcast, during golden hour or even later on in the evening. Get down and dirty. Try shooting on the same level as the plants. Or focus on a different vantage point and capture the surrounding architecture. Try something new! See if you can develop your own style of plant photography. https://download.cnet.com/Mirror-Lab/3000-12511_4-77355128.html (Mirror Lab) is an Android app to help you creatively enhance your images. The Benefits of Creative Limitations:Sometimes it helps to have a brief. Next time you go out for some nature photography, try shooting with a theme. How about focusing on fungi or honing in on those detailed macro shots? By creatively limiting yourself, you can test your skills and come up with innovative, often unexpected results. Give group photography a try. Whether you all go out and shoot with the same theme or explore your own ideas, you're bound to come away inspired. Push yourself and expand your creative horizons. Take Time for YourselfWhether, like Ines, you take time to discover your “reason for being” through the Japanese practice of Ikigai or delve deeper into the philosophy of Stoicism, remember to take time for yourself today… and every day. Self-care is not selfish. The Phoenix Coyotes in Kingston?Hayden started out as a science nerd, dabbled in Biochemistry…but science is an all or none commitment. Being disillusioned with “the academic treadmill.” but “pursuing anything art related is probably not going to be lucrative.” Hayden transferred to Montreal Concordia. The Canadian “art nerd school,” but close to Ottawa. METZ the band: a band that talks to each other while playing. Beatles or Stones: are you a studio band person or are you a live band person? The Rolling Stones album: “Blue Lonesome” Hayden: team Beatles, but listens to podcasts more…but listens to music while playing. Hayden the artist: Cartoon charactures, flash sheet aesthetic, no negative space, reminded me of Keith Herring. Was told in college to choose between painting and drawing…Hayden did the opposite and did both. “rubberhose animation”Large paintings only. At Eternity’s Gate…you can’t fake real. Picasso: It takes a lifetime to cultivate the necessary skills to be able to paint a masterpiece in 30 seconds. Real masters are student’s first, you must constantly be studying. Day has been captivated by nature and art ever since first viewed the work of artist, Andy Goldsworthy as a child. Day’s very first altars were on the side of his driveway after every rainstorm, where his five year old self was devoted to saving the displaced worms by digging little holes and then decorating them in a mandala-like fashion. But it wasn’t until a major relationship breakup that he began to cultivate Morning Altars as a daily spiritual and beauty-making practice as a way to process his grief and heartache. For much of his adult life, Schildkret has been traveling three distinct but converging paths of art, nature and education. On the artistic road, he worked on and off Broadway from 2001-2007 with luminaries such a Steve Martin (The Underpants), Jessie Tyler Ferguson (The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged), Duncan Sheik (The Nightingale), and Kristen Bell and Nikki M. James (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer). As an educator and public speaker, Schildkret began his career teaching teenagers and mentoring them to connect their spiritually with a deeper nature connection. He was the winner of the prestigious Helen Diller Award for Excellence in Education with his widely popular ‘Fire Circle’ class. For over 10 years, Schildkret gathered hundreds of students around a fire to learn about ancestry, spirituality, responsibility and impermanence. Schildkret is also the Founder of Legacy As Livelihood, a creative purpose coaching practice, and The Break Free Lab, a nationally touring workshop designed for creative and spiritually minded people who long to find their creative purpose and live a life devoted to serving their creative calling. Schildkret understands that to be a teacher, he also needs to be a student. Over the course of his career, he has learned from nature connection expert, Jon Young (8 Shields Institute), studied and danced with Shoshonee elder Clyde Hall (the Naraya) and is currently a devoted scholar with the author, spiritual activist and public speaker Stephen Jenkinson (Die Wise - Nautilus Book Award Winner) and a recent graduate of his school (the Orphan Wisdom School) in Canada. While Schildkret has been building earth altars his entire life, he has been building an altar every morning as a practice for the past six years inside Wildcat Canyon in Richmond, CA. Inspired to share the benefits of this daily practice, he has gathered communities all over the United States and Canada to attend his altar and mandala making workshops. His work proves there is real healing and connection happening when people create intentional earth art. morningaltars.com

Ever had an experience that was so profound it altered you forever? Ever had a once in a lifetime experience that brought you so much joy? I'm sure you have. But those moments can be few and far between and many times our of our control. While I (Phil Svitek) truly wish upon you those extraordinarily beautiful moments in your life, I am more concerned with how you find meaning in the everyday. The moments that are much more quiet and subdued. The ones that could even be classified as mundane like laundry, an activity that has to be repeated over and over throughout life. These types of moments we don't talk about much. They're certainly not written about it books or shown on TV. If we talk about activities such as doing laundry with anyone it's usually in a begrudging manner. Like, “crap, I have to do laundry.” But even though we don't talk about them or consider them much, I want to pose to you that these moments are equally as profound as the once-in-a-lifetime events. Maybe even more so. Here's why. Because if we can't learn to find meaning in the everyday then we'll end up depressed. You can't just go from one amazing experience to another amazing experience. More often times than not, these monotonous moments amount to more of our time than the special ones. Even successful people that you admire have moments of down time that they need to fill. It is how we fill these moments that defines us. And in this lesson I explore questions such as these and offers insights from the stoics, Viktor Frankl (author of Man's Search for Meaning), Thomas Edison, Dan Millman (author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior) and artist Andy Goldsworthy to derive at a solution. If you'd like to experience more meaning from life, this episode is for you. Be sure to leave a comment. "In today’s overly virtual landscape, I want my viewers to be enchanted by each altar's capacity to awaken their imagination, their awe, their nuanced eye and deep love and connection with the magic and mystery of our earth. I long to have my audiences linger on that ephemeral edge where death and rebirth bring forth and ancient remembering and a new impermanent beauty." Sixteen years after the release of the Rivers and Tides Thomas Riedelsheimer returnes to work with Andy Goldsworthy. LEANING INTO THE WIND—ANDY GOLDSWORTHY follows Andy on his exploration of the layers of his world and the impact of the years on himself and his art. As Goldsworthy introduces his own body into the work it becomes at the same time even more fragile and personal and also sterner and tougher, incorporating massive machinery and crews on his bigger projects. LEANING INTO THE WIND subject Andy Goldsworthy makes works of art using the materials and conditions that he encounters wherever he is. Using earth, rocks, leaves, ice, snow, rain, or sunlight, the resulting artworks exist briefly before they are altered and erased by natural processes. He also uses his own body as a medium, as with his Rain Shadows, or through actions such as spitting, throwing, climbing and walking. He has undertaken commissions in the Queensland rainforest, Australia and the New Zealand coast; in Rio de Janeiro, New York City, St Louis, Montreal and San Francisco; in the New Mexico desert, the mountains of central Spain and Haute-Provence, France, and the fells of Cumbria and Dumfriesshire. Goldsworthy has published many books throughout his career, beginning with Rain, sun, snow, mist, calm: Photoworks (1985). Director Thomas Reidelsheimer joins us for a conversation on what inspires Andy Goldsworthy to make his art, what attracts him to the work and why did he turn to work with Andy after 16 years. Before listening to this 2017 holiday gift books edition of Word By Word: Conversations With Writers, host Gil Mansergh wants to remind everyone that this is a very important year to include books as gifts. Immediately following the firestorm that engulfed much of Sonoma County, Gil had survivors living and eating at his house. Since several rooms are lined with book shelves, he would often find them reading the titles and pulling down a personal favorite. “I love this book,” they would tell him. “It was in the den on the left side of the shelf, only mine had a blue cover.” The point of this, is that books are important to us—and especially to fire survivors. They can be touchstones to the past—as well as harbingers of new beginnings. So, what do outdoor sculpture creator Andy Goldsworthy, Presidents Grant and Obama, Philip Pullman’s prequel to his Golden Compass novels, a gigantic coffee table book of animal portraits, and a disaster which results in a sofware engineer having to keep a sourdough starter alive and happy by playing music have in common? These fascinating titles are all included among the gift books Gil talks about with Sheryl Cotleur, Michelle Bellah, the book buyers for the Copperfield’s Bookstores.

Dave Elitch first garnered attention with his band Daughters of Mara’s debut album “I am Destroyer” in 2007, but his time touring with the American progressive rock band The Mars Volta in 2009-2010 is what really put him on the map. He has since worked with Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, M83, The 1975, Juliette Lewis, Big Black Delta, as well as many others. He is a regular in the LA session scene, including performing on various records, syncs and film scores for major motion pictures, (most recently “Trolls” and “Logan.”) In addition to playing, he also conducts master-class lectures worldwide and keeps a busy private teaching practice in Los Angeles where he has developed a reputation as THE technique/body mechanic specialist who has helped many of the industries top players as well as educators. “Ever since I decided that I was going to be a drummer, I wanted to be the best I could possibly be, and I put all my faculties toward that. Eventually that can take a toll, so I kind of hit a wall and needed a break. I’ve always had an appreciation for art, and luckily where I live in LA there are all these rad galleries – the Getty, the Hammer, Thinkspace, C.A.V.E., Giant Robot – so I frequent those. I get a different vantage point on the creative experience. I started getting inspired by documentaries about artists, like The Radiant Child about Jean-Michel Basquiat, Rivers and Tides about Andy Goldsworthy, the Gerhard Richter documentary Painting, Francis Bacon movies on YouTube… It’s just such a fascinating take on making sense of the world around you. Plus, I’ve dedicated my life to knowing all there is to know about drums, and I’m expected to know everything, With art, I can just go from my gut, so there’s a huge sense of freedom and escape for me there.” – Dave Elitch Topics Discussed In This Episode: The pitfalls of formalized education The realities of being a musician Over exposure of art through technology Distractions of social media How Dave became a professional drummer Andy Goldsworthy “Rivers and Tides” Drawing similarities and differences between his approach to music and his approach to art The compulsion for knowledge and exploring Understanding the veil of perception Creative adaptability Spirituality in art Breaking free of systematic thinking Branding within the art world The ripple effect of art and commerce interacting with each other www.artistdecoded.com
