Today I’m talking to a guy who believes every company needs to be built to last—not just to flip. Neil Lansing is a turnaround specialist who left private equity to bet his own money on small, underperforming businesses. He’s taken companies from 18 employees to over 400. From $2 million to $40-50 million in revenue. And when everyone else was laying people off in 2008, he told his refrigeration company’s team: “We need more clients.” After transforming mom-and-pop service companies one after another, he found his final stop, Piedmont Machine & Manufacturing. At 67, he’s not looking for the next flip. He’s building something that will outlast him. ************* Listen on your favorite podcast app using pod.link. . But eventually he walked away from working with other people’s money to bet his own cash on small businesses. It wasn’t an easy mental shift. As he told me: “I remember the first time I did something. I was sitting there and I remember, now I’m not in corporate America, I’m not in these nice New York digs… I’m in some place where it’s like, my God, what did I get myself into?” But then he told himself: “Quit crying, figure it out, make it work.” The Five-Person Rule One of Neil’s key insights is his management structure. Nobody has more than five direct reports. Not supervisors, not managers, not even Neil as owner. This tight span of control is how he grew his refrigeration company from 10-18 people to over 400 in six years while maintaining quality and accountability. “Everyone has to do what we’re supposed to do,” he explains. “If we all do what we’re supposed to do and take the accountability of what we’re supposed to do, then it can work.” Growing When Others Retreat The 2008 financial crisis tested every business owner, but Neil’s response was counterintuitive. While the country was laying off 700,000 people a month, he gathered his top 10 guys and said: “We’ve just got to get more clients.” By Christmas, they were bringing in all new work. Then their existing clients–Target, Publix, Costco – suddenly needed massive expansions. Neil went from laying off 40-50 people to desperately hiring them back plus another 40-50 more. Why Manufacturing, Why Now After several successful turnarounds, Neil decided manufacturing would be his next chapter. He bought Piedmont Machine in Concord, North Carolina, seeing opportunity where others saw decline. The company does Swiss machining for smaller diameter work and can handle parts up to 30 inches in diameter—from roller bearing components for landing gear to automated door systems. He envisions growing his company to 80-100 employees, consolidating into a new 60-75,000 square foot facility, and implementing comprehensive training programs. The Grinder’s Legacy Neil calls himself a “grinder” – someone focused on day-to-day execution rather than just deal-making. His philosophy centers on personal responsibility: “If I don’t do what I’m supposed to do, then I can’t pay these people. And if I can’t pay these people, that means that we did it wrong.” What drives someone to keep grinding at 67? Neil says it's about legacy, not money. “Everything I’ve done, it still works. It still runs. If I do something and it goes under or it stops being in existence, then I feel like that’s not a good legacy. That means I didn’t do it right.” Neil doesn’t know how to run a machine and doesn’t want to. He knows how to run a business with clear strategy, deep understanding of people, and balls, and he's still betting big because that’s what real builders do.

Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: November 26, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS9: E10: dUg Pinnick (Kings X / Grinder Blues) Motown Roots to Metal TruthsSHOW SUMMARY:A voice that can shake a room and a bass tone you can feel in your ribs—dUg Pinnick of King's X joins us for a candid, wide-open conversation about art, survival, and building a sound that refuses the mold. From a childhood spent glued to record players to the thunder of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, dUg traces how Motown roots and gospel grit fused with heavy riffs to form the King's X blueprint. We talk about the business as he's lived it—70 years of evolution and disruption—why validation culture can starve the soul, and how a band can stay small on charts yet massive in people's lives.dUg breaks down his uniquely architectural approach to writing: drum groove first, guitars and bass next, and lyrics last, pulled straight from lived emotion. He opens the hood on tone design, too—signal splitting for grit and chime, frequency carving that lets bass feel huge without drowning guitars, and why a 12‑string bass keeps his hands honest. We revisit the Dogman era with producer Brendan O'Brien, tuning choices that made the record hit like their live show, and the stubborn love that fuels a cult following decade after decade. There's warmth and wit here—AC/DC dinner stories, the joy of seeing U2 at the Rose Bowl, and the humility of knowing fans bring their own history to every chorus. dUg shares what's next: final tweaks on his solo record, the spark of a rock-and-roll cooking show, and a stack of ideas ready for the next King's X chapter. If you care about songwriting, bass tone, heavy music history, or simply staying true when trends shift, this conversation delivers depth you can use and heart you can feel.If this moved you, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review so more music fans can find it.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web Pagewww.kingsxrocks.comCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Furthermore, the discussion touches upon the rapidly changing tech industry landscape, including the significant Adobe acquisition of Semrush and the competitive moves of companies like Canva, prompting audience commentary on the potential implications of these corporate shifts on product quality and market strategy. When the internet infrastructure company Cloudflare experienced a major outage, it was far more than a momentary glitch. Its scale was staggering. Suddenly, a diverse range of major companies—including Canva, ChatGPT, Spotify, Uber, and Zoom—were all experiencing issues simultaneously. The event wasn't just a technical problem; it was a revealing moment that offered a rare peek behind the curtain of the digital world. It exposed hidden vulnerabilities and surprising dynamics within the tech ecosystem we all depend on. This article distills the three most impactful lessons learned from that single event.1. The Internet Isn't a Cloud, It's a Jenga TowerThe Centralization SurpriseThe core lesson from the Cloudflare outage was the shocking revelation of just how centralized our decentralized-seeming internet truly is. The popular image of the internet is a resilient, distributed network, but the reality is that a small number of foundational companies form the base of a massive Jenga tower. When a key block like Cloudflare was jostled, users quickly discovered that dozens of different services were all pointing "towards one direction," revealing a hidden single point of failure. Seemingly stable pieces higher up—from your design software to your ride-share app—began to wobble. This one incident impacted a staggering list of applications, highlighting the sheer diversity of services reliant on a single piece of infrastructure: Canva, Archive of Our Own, Canvas, Character AI, ChatGPT, Claude AI, Dayforce, Google Store, Grinder, IKEA, Indeed, League of Legends, Letterboxed, OpenAI, Quizlet, Rover, Spotify, Square, Truth Social, Uber, and Zoom. For the average user, this means the digital services that feel distinct and independent are, in fact, far more fragile and codependent than they appear.2. While You Were Offline, Big Tech Made Some Bizarre MovesA Bizarre Acquisition Amidst the ChaosWhile the digital world was grappling with the outage, news broke that Adobe was acquiring SEO tool Semrush for $1.9 billion. This development, happening alongside the infrastructure chaos, sparked widespread confusion and skepticism. As many in the tech community noted, Semrush "has nothing to do with creative" software, which is Adobe's core domain. The concern was palpable, with one community member expressing a common fear:"I really hope this Semrush acquisition doesn't affect quality and support. Big corporation buyouts [rarely succeed]."The analysis behind this seemingly strange move points to the disruptive force of artificial intelligence. The theory is that as AI reshapes search and content creation, traditional SEO tools are finding it harder to maintain their dominance. This acquisition could be Adobe's strategic, if unconventional, response to that industry pressure. This trend of unexpected competition is visible elsewhere, with platforms like Canva making aggressive moves into video editing, putting them in direct competition with Adobe. The outage served as a backdrop to a tech landscape that is shifting in unpredictable ways.3. Your Business is More Vulnerable Than You Think (But Outages Can Make You Stronger)The Resilience ImperativeFor businesses and professionals, the outage was not an abstract problem. The impact was immediate: one professional reported their AI-powered Fathom note-taker for Zoom failed to load, even while the Zoom call itself was active—a perfect example of a hidden dependency crippling a critical workflow. The sudden inability to access essential tools forces a critical business question to the surface:"...if ChatGPT is down and that's what I use and now I can't use it for the first four hours of my day... How can I use 50% of my time to maximize 100% of my opportunity?"The core advice is to reframe these events not as mere problems to be weathered but as invaluable opportunities for strategic review. Business owners should use these moments to ask what platforms they truly rely on, research the stability of those systems, and begin building more resilient workflows. This is the "bow and arrow" principle applied to business strategy. An outage forces you to pull back, assess your tools, and re-aim. This forced pause, while painful, is precisely what allows you to launch forward with a more resilient, deliberate, and ultimately stronger operational foundation, turning a negative event into a catalyst for positive change. Conclusion: A New Lens for a Digital WorldThis single outage taught us more than just who owns the internet's plumbing. It revealed the hidden fragility of our digital infrastructure, highlighted the unpredictable strategies of tech giants under pressure, and underscored the personal and professional imperative for building resilience. It showed that the platforms we use every day are interconnected in ways we rarely see until something breaks. The next time your favorite app goes down, will you just see an inconvenience, or will you see a chance to re-evaluate the digital foundation your work and life are built on?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In the morning following Aelfric's shared tale of his troubled past, the group pack up camp and head North. Despite the segregated travelling arrangement, the group finally reach the town of Berinthas; a town supposedly tormented by a Death Knight. Sir Tirion and Shadar remain keen to rid the world of the undead abomination, however the people of Berintahas don't seem too troubled. A very warm and friendly welcome put the group at immediate unease. Undeterred, Sir Tirion, accompanied by Daemon, makes his way to the Temple of Torm to find out more about the Death Knight while Aelfric, Shadar and Mina secure their lodgings. There's one thought that lingers on everyone's mind though: Whatever threat seems to be lurking around town, doesn't seem to have the locals spooked for some reason...
"Guy N. Smith wrote his first horror novel, Werewolf by Moonlight, in 1974 published by New English Library (NEL). It spawned two direct sequels. However, he states it was Night of the Crabs, published in 1976, that really launched his career as a writer. Spawning 11 sequels, the latest of which was published in 2019, the series chronicles invasions of various areas of the British coastline by giant man-eating crabs." "A lifelong pipe smoker, Guy N. Smith won the British pipe smoking championship in 2003." "Oh, no, the professor died. I saw this movie in a little theater in West Texas when I was just a kid back in the late 1950s. It was in the winter and cold as ... well, as cold as it can get in the Panhandle. There was very little heat in the theater and my whole family sat shivering and with our jackets on, we but didn't want to leave. If you ever saw "The Last Picture Show" that will give you an idea of what it was like. But, good memories nonetheless." - @gilbertodominguez5212 3 years ago

If you're anything like me, the moment you saw the World's most famous art gallery had been robbed of the French Crown Jewels... one thing came to mind. It's silly really, because at the end of the day it's a crime. A serious crime. Nevertheless, it's hard to totally ignore the audacity and romance of it all. What's the difference between a robbery and a heist? Whatever it is that distinguishes those words... there is something seductive. We were told the thieves were organised, efficient, and used specialist equipment. I imagined a Tom Cruise-like figure firing a grappling hook out of a special gun, repelling from the ceiling and acrobatically navigating a room of invisible lasers, any of which if broken, would immediately trigger an alarm and a carbon dioxide pump that would starve the room of oxygen and suffocate the thieves where they stood. Alas, as more detail has emerged over the last two weeks, it's become clear the Louvre Heist was less Mission Impossible and more Mission-to-Mitre-10. The specialist equipment the thieves used? It was a plain old over-the-counter angle grinder like the second-hand Makita I have in my tools cupboard at home. I'd never thought about it before, but the problem with publicly displaying crown jewels worth tens or hundreds of millions of dollars, is that security in the display cases can only go so far. As well as being hard to access for potential thieves, in the event of a fire, the cases need to be openable in a few seconds. So they need to be super-secure. But also super-accessible. What could go wrong? What the thieves seemed to have worked out is that using an axe or a hammer was a bad idea. It would have potentially taken hundreds of blows to break through and get the goods. But the museum's own firefighting handbook lays out the best course of action for quickly getting into the Louvre's secure display cases: you don't smash, you cut. Although they've made a series of arrests, lessons abound for the French authorities. It's shocking they had such poor security camera coverage around the museum. But as more and more detail comes to light, I think there's a valuable lesson for all of us: The disguises. The thieves weren't in military fatigues. They weren't dressed in all black. They weren't wearing crazy masks like the ones in MoneyHeist. They were wearing the universal uniform of authority: high-vis vests. The great irony of a garment designed to be seen is that it has become so ubiquitous, we don't see it, even when it's being worn by thieves, in broad daylight, stealing some of the most valuable jewellery in the World. The Paris Police, who has street cameras trained on the area where the thieves parked their truck, sheepishly admitted this week that no one paid any attention to the men on the video feed. In their hi-vis vests, they looked like a regular construction crew, said a Police spokesperson. And Paris has heaps of construction. It looks increasingly likely the men will not get away with their theft. And though clearly they were organised, this was hardly the perfect crime. They dropped some of the jewels and left heaps of evidence at the scene. They tried to burn the truck but the gas tank wouldn't catch. The big question now is whether or not the jewels are still intact. Still, they have proved something. For the biggest heist at the World's most-famous museum in more than a hundred years, the biggest heist since the Mona Lisa was pinched way back in 1911, you only need three things: A charged battery on your angle grinder. An air of confidence and purpose. And most importantly, a high-vis vest. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Just off the old Natchez Trace, in the quiet woods of Tennessee, stands a broken marble column marking the grave of Meriwether Lewis. The monument was meant to honor one of America's greatest explorers, but its shattered form also reflects a life cut short under circumstances that remain unsolved more than two centuries later. In 1804, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery across thousands of miles of uncharted wilderness. They mapped rivers, documented new species, and forged fragile relationships with Native Nations, returning home as national heroes. Yet only a few years later, while traveling east on government business, Lewis stopped at a frontier inn called Grinder's Stand. Before dawn, gunfire rang out. By morning, the celebrated explorer was dead. From the start, the explanation was contested. Some, including Thomas Jefferson and William Clark, believed Lewis had taken his own life after years of depression, financial trouble, and lingering illness. Others pointed to inconsistencies in the testimonies, the absence of eyewitnesses, and the violence of the scene to argue that he was murdered. Over the years, theories have ranged from robbery on a lawless road to political assassination, while modern scholars have even suggested his death may have been linked to malaria or another untreated disease. In this episode, we retrace Lewis's final journey along the Natchez Trace and examine the testimonies left behind. We look at the evidence for suicide, the motives for murder, and the generations of speculation that have kept this mystery alive. We also consider the more recent efforts by Lewis's descendants to exhume his body, hoping that modern science might finally answer the question that has haunted his legacy: how did Meriwether Lewis really die? In this episode, we sit down with Nick Terzulli, VP of R&D at Fellow. Nick shares how his curiosity and persistence pulled him deeper into coffee culture—as a barista and a tinkerer, and eventually as the engineer behind Fellow's iconic product, including the new Espresso Series 1. We dig into how engineering and coffee intersect, from the mysteries of burr geometry to challenges in espresso machine stability. At the heart of Nick's story is a lesson in following passion over paycheck, learning by doing, and embracing failure as part of innovation. It's a conversation about curiosity, persistence, and the joy of creating products that shape people's daily coffee rituals.

The Grinders are back. WOOH! And we are ready to celebrate, brother. What ya gonna do when RPGrindermania runs wild on you?! The same ol' Grinders but now with more headbutts, low blows, and eye pokes than any Face could handle. WOOH! In a surprising Face turn Break actually shows up on time to join Eric and Frank for a 3-Vs-News Hardcore Match. The Grinders challengers? The dreaded News is back. The News brought with it the announcement that the Dragon Quest soundtracks are coming to Apple Music. The next member of the News is a release date for Nicktoons and the Dice of Destiny. In a shocking Heel turn, Fate/Extra Record joins the News with a delay until next year. After pinning the news for a 3 count, the Grinders moved on to their next matches against the Reviews. With skill and mastery of the top rope, Eric is able to dominate the spoiler free review of the Fantastic 4: First Steps. Meanwhile, Frank used his signature Sharpshooter to make the Dog Soldiers tap-out. In the squared circle, no werewolves are a match for professional wrasslers. Werewolves can't SMEEEEEELLLLL what Frank is cooking. The next match for the Grinders is against their greatest rival, the Stinkoes. It's a heated rivalry. Every fight ends in injuries or worse. Some former Grinders have never been heard from since. With the death of a music legend, the loss of an entire television network, and the funding cuts to the REAL news media, the Stinkoes are looking increasingly unbeatable. But if the Grinders want to be the man, they will have to beat the man. The Stinkoes are the man. The Stinkoes are tough, but the Grinders have their own tag partners to help them even the score. The Sweetoes are back and they will always have the Grinder's backs. No Ladder Match is a match for the return of a favorite tv show or the death of a man who tainted wrestling for decades. Apparently, he didn't say his prayers or eat his vegetables. With only one opponent left, the Grinders face off against their greatest challenge, the Panic Room. The only thing standing between the Grinders and shiny new belts. The ultimate slobberknocker, between 1st Amendment rights or going to jail. Can the Grinders triumph and hoist the gold they will soon wear around their waists? Or will the Grinders just have to get ready to suck it? One thing is for sure; everyone just made it onto Eric's List. WOOH! And that's the bottom line because BreakMan says so!

This week we cracked open some Red Pop. A sticky hybrid with a sweet skunky nose and a terp profile that reads like a botanical cocktail menu. Grown by Dragonfly Wellness, this flower had one of us ready to go chop wood… and the other questioning reality from the couch. What's Inside This Strain?Red Pop (this version) is a hybrid leaning indica, clocking in at a bold 28.4% THC with a wild mix of cannabinoids:• THC-A, Delta-9 THC, CBD-A, CBC, CBG-A• And a terpene list longer than your last text from mom:Limonene, Pinene, Beta-Caryophyllene, Linalool, Humulene, Terpinolene, Camphene, Eucalyptol, and more.Lineage:Strawberry x Cookies & Cream x Pave(Some genetics list Afghani instead. Which one's your Red Pop?)Flavor + Effects:• Sweet, creamy strawberry vibes with a skunky twist• Very cerebral for one of us, heavy and heady for the other• One co-host got chill and chatty. The other felt a creeping vortex in his chest• Could bring focus and mood elevation or anxiety and pressure if you're sensitive to pinenesNotable Use Cases:• Mood lift• Light body relaxation• Midday boost (for some)• Anxiety relief (or trigger — test your tolerance)Would We Smoke It Again? It's a maybe. This batch hit hard in very different ways. If you're terp-curious and love experimenting, this one's a trip. Just don't judge it on taste alone. The flavor didn't wow us, but the effects are worth exploring.Get the same Red Pop from Dragonfly WellnessOur go-to grinder for sticky buds is the Santa Cruz Shredder. Discount link in the episode description.Takeaways:• Terpene profiles matter more than THC percent• The same strain can hit very different depending on your body chemistry• Don't chase the highest high. Chase the best experienceHit play to hear us unpack the full ride. Grinder talk. Body feels. And a few stories about psychedelic side quests.

The Grinder is a sitcom that aired on FOX from 2015–2016 starring Rob Lowe as Dean Sanderson, a TV actor famous for playing a lawyer who returns to his hometown and attempts to practice law alongside his actual attorney brother, Stewart (Fred Savage). The show cleverly parodied legal dramas by contrasting Dean's melodramatic, fictional courtroom experience with the realities of practicing law. Critics praised the series, with many considering it to be one of the standout comedies of the season. Despite its critical acclaim, The Grinder struggled with low viewership which led FOX to cancel the series after just one season, a decision that disappointed fans and cast members alike. Will The S1E1 guys object to FOX's decision? Listen as they deep dive The Grinder's pilot episode. Starring: Rob Lowe, Fred Savage, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Natalie Morales, Hana Hayes, Connor Kalopsis, William Devane, Steve Little, Brian Huskey, & Kumail Nanjiani www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD
