Love isn't meant to be conditional, especially when it comes to our understanding of how God loves us. But this episode's guest—pastor, author, and podcaster Luke Norsworthy—says we're far too normalized to the idea that love is contingent upon how we practice our faith, obey, and function in general. On this episode, Norsworthy and Cuss talk about whether or not the phrase “unconditional love” is redundant. They consider how family language can be misused and what it might look like to become more integrated in our lives. They talk about the parable of the prodigal son, what it is to be acquainted with grief as a believer, and how to process disappointment. Their conversation also covers celebrity pastors, loneliness, and the value of vulnerability. The Expectation Gap by Steve Cuss is now available—order here! His conversation with Steve Carter meanders through all sorts of topics: How to put yourself into sermons without being narcissistic. Why Luke uses a checkmark system to track sermon writing progress. How the sobering but hope-filled journey of an Afghan family is shaping Luke's church. How Luke receives sermon feedback before Sunday, and why he's a better preacher because of it. Luke's final advice? Be grateful every time you preach, regardless of how you feel it went. Welcome to Season Four of the Onto Somethin' Pod. In this season, we are bringing on a series of guests that continue to help us discover the foundations of the first third of life. On this episode, Zane interviews Luke Norsworthy. Luke’s books are incredible examples of what it means and how to do “soul work”. You’ll hear conversations about his newest book, some of his podcast adventures, and how to navigate changes in your faith. Oh, and the podcast legend, Annie F. Downs.
I take a brief break from wrapping up our time in Job to talk to my friend Luke Norsworthy about his newest book, Befriending Your Monsters. After a bit of lazy banter about Quarantine Stashes, we get into what it means to recognize the monsters beneath the surface in our lives, the value in not running from them, the role that spiritual disciplines play and how we become healthy people who are more of who we're meant to be.
In this episode Patrick talks to preacher and author Luke Norsworthy about what our monsters can teach us about ourselves, and how to use our failures to keep us centered. It’s a lot more lighthearted than it sounds.
It may not be Godzilla or Bigfoot or something like that, but we all deal with monsters in our own lives. Maybe it's comparison, or chasing after success, or a misplaced identity. In his new book Befriending Your Monsters, author and pastor Luke Norsworthy addresses those lies we believe and how we can fear them in a way like we did with monsters as children. But instead of running from them, his book focuses on how to come alongside those fears and learn what they might teaching you about your spiritual walk with God. After last week's conversation with Scarlet Hiltibidal about her book on fear, I appreciated adding to that with this approach to fear and a look at another aspect of fear. Luke is a great speaker and I'm excited for this new book. Luke's book comes out on May 18, and his publisher, Baker Book House, has a great deal going on where if you pre-order his Befriending Your Monsters, you can get his first book, God Over Good, for free. Honestly, that's too good of a deal to pass up. You can pre-order the book on Baker's website, or anywhere you get books. Luke discusses doubt while preaching, how pain multiplies, the danger of cynicism and mistakes he has made.
I love Luke Norsworthy, but to say this is an Enneagram 7 Episode would be such an injustice. In this episode we talk about mystery and faith, spiritual practices and enneagram stances, repressed centers, how Threes Sixes and Nines can be repressed and dominant in the same center, parenting, and answering other questions from the audience. And all of this with the joy and flare of 2 Sevens and a super extroverted Two! Go grab your copy of God Over Good, come see me at an upcoming conference or event, and leave your comments and a review on iTunes! Thank you Luke, and everyone who joined us. Definitely an episode that you will want to listen to more than once!
My guest is Luke Norsworthy. His new book is God Over Good (https://www.amazon.com/God-over-Good-Saving-Expectations/dp/0801093325). It's hard to say that God is good when God isn't always what we expect good to be. A good father wouldn't make it so difficult to get to know him, would he? And if God is all-powerful, wouldn't he ensure that we never suffered? Either our understanding of God is incorrect, or our definition of good is inadequate. In a world that is messy and a church that is imperfect, it's easy to let our faith be lost. But that doesn't mean we have to lose God. It means we must consider the fact that perhaps our idealized expectations are just plain wrong. With transparency about his own struggles with cynicism and doubt, pastor Luke Norsworthy helps frustrated Christians and skeptics trade their confinement of God in an anemic definition of good for confidence in the God who is present in everything, including our suffering. Luke Norsworthy (MDiv, Abilene Christian University) is the senior minister of the 1,500 member Westover Hills Church of Christ in Austin, Texas. A frequent speaker at universities, retreats, and conferences, he is the host of the popular Newsworthy with Norsworthy podcast on which he has rubbed shoulders with some of the brightest and most prominent voices in theology. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and three daughters. Special Guest: Luke Norsworthy.

What would happen if preachers showed the world their real selves? Maybe this podcast can help answer that question. As part of my Doctor of Ministry Capstone Project, I'm interested in measuring whether hearing the stories of ministers who dare to be vulnerable in front of their congregations can encourage other clergy to do the same. So I'm making a podcast as a format to share those stories. First, though, I need help knowing how to do it. What's it like to start a podcast, especially while pastoring a church? Luke Norsworthy, a fellow pastor with a podcast of his own, is here to give me the answers. On this "teaser" to the upcoming "The Naked Preacher Podcast," hear my vision for this project and my conversation with Luke. The highlights include: An assurance that we are both wearing clothes; a short game of "Name that John Legend Lyric"; and a cruel, darky humorous proposition of names for my future children. Check out more about Luke, including details about his podcast, "Newsworthy with Norsworthy," and his upcoming book, God Over Good, here.
Sevens are the joy bombs of the Enneagram. The energy they give off is energetic, fun-loving and naturally cheerful. They are optimistic by nature and seize every moment of life. They live for the next adventure and are experts at reframing a negative situation to find the silver lining. But all their “living for tomorrow” is really to avoid pain and introspection. Sevens may have an underlying feeling that if they allow themselves to feel an emotion they'll get stuck in that emotion never come out. They keep their minds busy and occupied with projects and ideas for the future in an unconscious attempt to evade having negative emotional or psychological feelings. Listen in as we jump into an energetic conversation with Enneagram Seven, Luke Norsworthy, and find out why it's important for Sevens to enjoy life with a small spoon. Luke and his wife Lindsay along with their three daughters live in Austin, TX where Luke is the senior minister of the Westover Hills Church. Luke's first book God over Good releases October 2018. Luke also hosts the Newsworthy with Norsworthy Podcast, a weekly podcast discussing Spirituality, Christianity, and anything else that seems news worthy. In our latest episode, Mackey is changing things up a bit as we have the first tandem podcast with Luke Norsworthy. The way you talk about yourself will eventually become the way that you talk about, and to, others. We live in a culture of negative talk. We say things about ourselves that we would never in a million years say about, much less to, other people. We are our worst critics, and we are relentless. Before Jesus does anything in his public ministry, before he heals anybody, forgives anybody, or preaches one sermon, he is baptized. This culminates with the spirit of God telling him that he is pleased with him. Jesus lived out of the knowledge that he was wholly loved and accepted by God. He didn't have time negativity, especially negative self talk. And neither should we When you start to live from the knowledge that you are loved and worthy, your entire disposition changes. You begin to be more generous, and gracious, and patient with everybody you come into contact with.
My pal Luke and I continue the conversation we started on his podcast episode... we jump in all about church leadership and giving gifts to friends and Austin vs. Nashville and podcasting and how to get Luke to come on a trip. (It's too easy.) For the first half of this conversation, head to Newsworthy with Norsworthy .... and once you've listened through BOTH, tweet us (@lukenorsworthy and @anniefdowns) between now and December 1 and we'll get a little prize to you (until we run out)! http://100daystobrave.com http://anniefdowns.com #thatsoundsfunpodcast ... join in the conversation wherever hashtags are welcome. :)

Theology Beer Camp was an amazing three days of fermented fun. I was extremely grateful that James Younger, executive producer of The Story of God with Morgan Freeman on the National Geographic Channel, was able to join us for a special screening and a live Homebrewed Podcast. You will here James discusses his journey from British scientist, to journalist, to producing a popular religion series with Morgan Freeman. Along the way he shares his thoughts as an outsider on American religion, politics, and the shifting shape of spirituality. Plus he lets us know just how his mind has changed over the course of the series. As part of beer camp we not only had delicious SoCal beer throughout, but Chapman Crafted brought two special beers in honor of the one and only Morgan Freeman. There was the IPA called "The Voice of God" and the dIPA called "The Rumble of God" in honor of Morgan's most luscious pipes. While James was hanging with us he recorded a number of other interviews that will be showing up on the inter webs. You can go ahead and check out his conversation with Nathan Gilmour of the Christian Humanist podcast HERE and his time on the Newsworthy with (Luke) Norsworthy podcast HERE. Today's show is the week we normally take off -- Happy Spring Break! But instead of no show, loyal listener and Simply Human Podcast's own, Chris Brannan, had a great idea to do a Best of Humans Being Human show. So here we go -- we used suggestions from listeners and then our own favorites, and came up with our Top 5 most hilarious moments from the previous 117 shows. Coming in at #5 (08:22) -- The Nipple Nerve Story told by my brother Jeff. At #4 (16:00) -- Rick's brother, Rob, joins us to tell the "Is your dad bald?" story. Taking the bronze (22:27) -- the most amazing and horrific story ever told, Chris Brannan and the Styrofoam Cup story. Your silver medalist (34:49) -- not a Humans Being Segment, but still very high in our most favorite moments, Santa Claus Talk with Mark and Rick. And your gold medal winner (41:02) -- only the second Humans Being Story ever told on this show (back on episode 3), Blake Lewis joins us to tell the Party Bus Story. We hope you have fun listening to this episode. I had lots of fun putting it together. Thanks for listening. We're back next week with Luke Norsworthy! Have a great week.
