Episode 3341: Cal Newport explores the transition from the "Age of Productivity," where mastering tools and systems was key, to a new era focused on work philosophies that emphasize meaningful creation and personal fulfillment. This shift, sparked by figures like Merlin Mann, reflects a deeper search for a fulfilling work life, moving beyond mere efficiency toward a more thoughtful approach to what we do and why we do it. Othership is a digital product to shift your state whenever and wherever you are. Robbie's app consists of over 250 guided breathwork classes to harness the power of the breath and build promoting habits. A transformative tool that makes up-regulating, down-regulating, and everything in between easeful, effective, and fun. He also goes on tour with live musical breathwork performances, sort of like a Cirque Du Soleil journey inward. In this episode, Robbie speaks about his rock bottom and what he had to do to turn his life around. He talks about the importance of meditation and what it's like to meditate for ten hours a day for ten days. Then, Robbie dives into breathwork and how breathing can completely change your state. If you're looking for a free and easy biohack, breathing can be a simple way to improve your health. Tune in as we chat about Othership, how to digest your food better, and the reason you should conquer your fears. [00:35] How Robbie Bent Got To Where He Is Now At 28, Robbie had been working for four years on a startup. One hundred people were working for him, his parents and friends had invested millions of dollars, and his entire income was tied up. The company failed, and Robbie had to fire one hundred people. Robbie sold his car, moved out of his apartment, and moved back in with his parents. Plus, Robbie was struggling with addiction. After reading The 4-hour Workweek, Robbie turned his life around. Get The 4-hour Workweek here: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Workweek-Escape-Live-Anywhere/dp/0307465357/benazadi-20 [08:00] What It Is Like To Meditate Ten Hours A Day For Ten Days It doesn't really matter how much you've been practicing; the difficulty of meditating for ten hours is still the same. After the first few days, you start to ease into the routine. We are always turned on, and we are never bored. How often are you just sitting? Almost never. So, meditating is a nice way to interrupt your routine. [10:55] How Breath-Control Can Change Your State and Heart Rate The breath controls our autonomic nervous system. When you're naturally calm, you will breathe slower. You can actually use your breath to trigger your state. If you need energy in the morning, try sympathetic breathing. Parasympathetic breathing will help you relax. The best way to get into the parasympathetic nervous system is by lengthening the exhale and including breath retention. A big breath in will increase the heart rate and energy. If you are nervous, you need long and slow exhales. [18:00] All About Othership And Finding Peak Experiences A peak experience can happen through breathwork. Othership will help shift your state and quiet the thinking mind. During Covid, Robbie created fear release sessions. The app was created to help people who are struggling with meditation. Plus, there's a physical space where Robbie has created a community to solve the loneliness pandemic. [23:25] How Doing Breathwork Can Help You Digest Food Better When you do slow breathing, you're triggering the parasympathetic state. You will be sending blood flow from the brain and muscles to the organs. That way, you are preparing your body for digestion. Also, eat without looking at your phone. The best thing you can do is be aware while you're eating. [26:30] Why You Should Practice Breathwork Before Going To Sleep If you eat something acidic before bed, it can affect sleep. Your body needs to regulate its pH balance. As a result, it starts over breathing This can cause dehydration in the evening. If you wake up with a dry mouth, you are mouth breathing. Something you can try is mouth tape. Meditation and breathwork before bed can help with inflammation, breathing patterns, sleep, and dehydration. [29:45] How Breathing Can Replace Caffeine and Increase Blood Flow The “up” section in Othership is creating a fight or flight response. This type of breathwork will send blood flow to the brain. Plus, it will help you get prepared and increase alertness. Breathing is about shifting your state, whereas meditation is about focus and awareness of your thoughts and emotions. You can shift your state with breathing. Think about breathing if you want to reduce your caffeine intake. [33:40] What Robbie Does To Conquer His Fears The more fearful situations you put yourself through, the more your tolerance will increase. Many people are fearful of rejection, so they don't try. The more you are comfortable with fear, the more you will be willing to try. Get comfortable with discomfort to find what is available to you in life. AND MUCH MORE! Jason Mudd brings his PR expertise to this episode as he talks about PR's role in your marketing strategy. Jason starts by giving some background about himself and then dives into some common PR mistakes, topics, tips and trends. Jason explains the difference between PR and advertising and why PR is so effective compared to advertising. Jason also shares an example of how it is important to take a holistic approach to your marketing or PR strategy. 3:18 – Jason explains how he took the “traditional” path to PR by starting his career as a journalist. 12:34 – Jason shares some common PR mistakes, including most people not knowing what PR is. 19:16 – Jason talks about his podcast and public speaking. 20:27 – Jason reviews some PR topics, tips and trends he is passionate about. 29:58 – Jason explains the difference between PR and advertising. 36:38 – Jason continues by talking about why PR is more of a long game compared to advertising. 40:37 – Jason shares some resources that have been helpful to him. Quote “Every once in a while, I try to disrupt that process and say, 'Hey, let's stop doing something, or let's do less and try to accomplish more.' Doing less means we're more focused and we might be able to do more or get more value out of it. For a while, I disrupted our engine and I started removing pieces from the equation. We cut back on the number of episodes of podcasts we were producing, we cut back on our Google AdWord spend and things like that. We cut back on the amount of PR we were doing for ourselves and then we noticed our inbound leads are down. Right? What happened? Then we started slowly adding things back. What we've discovered is it doesn't seem to matter what we bring back, it needs everything. It needs a holistic approach to work its best.” – Jason Mudd, CEO and Managing Partner at Axia Public Relations Links: Safe Harbor Boys Home: https://safeharboracademy.com/ Heroic Public Speaking: https://heroicpublicspeaking.com/ Listen to learn more about AI in PR: Episode 234: The Future of AI in Public Relations, With Parry Headrick and Chris Penn Episode 239: The Latest on SEO, Content Marketing and AI, With Dale Bertrand, Founder and President of Fire&Spark How our PR firm is using AI and how you can too with Jason Mudd, CEO of Axia Public Relations “The Fall of Advertising and the Rise of PR” by Al and Laura Ries: https://www.amazon.com/Fall-Advertising-Rise-PR/dp/0060081996 “The 4-Hour Workweek” by Timothy Ferriss: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Workweek-Escape-Live-Anywhere/dp/0307465357 “The 4-Hour Body” by Timothy Ferriss: https://www.amazon.com/4-Hour-Body-Uncommon-Incredible-Superhuman/dp/0307704610 “Brandscaping” by Andrew M.
