Gas Prices Plague Dems. Musk Reprises Original Offer For Twitter. NBA Coach Indoctrinates Players. Judge Goes Yard With 62 Record Breaker

Gas prices have begun to rise again throughout the nation by more than 50 cents in the last week, plaguing Democrats who were likely hoping those prices would not factor into the minds of voters before the midterm election. SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly offering to buy Twitter at his original offered price of $54.20 per share. A recent Associated Press story praised NBA coach Doc Rivers for using training camps and practices to indoctrinate players in left-wing social justice theory and to push his support for handpicked liberal Democrat politicians. The Yankees outfielder made history Tuesday, hitting his 62nd home run of the season in the Yankees' 3-2 loss to the Rangers in Game 2 of a doubleheader to break Roger Maris' American League and franchise record set in 1961 — and, some would say, the legitimate MLB record.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ray coached the Pistons from 1972-76, where he won NBA Coach of the Year in 1973-74. He became the first black head coach to win the award. This is a replay of one of our most popular episodes. See the original show notes and links below... This week is the Open Championship at historic Saint Andrews Golf Club. It is the last major of the PGA season. It also marks the 19th anniversary of Ben Curtis winning the Open Championship as a 300-to-1 long shot. When Ben Curtis hoisted the Claret Jug, it was the first time he had ever played in a major and it was his first-ever tournament at a links-style course. He also was a late add to the field and his wife barely made it over to England since she didn't have a passport. Anyway, this was an interesting episode that we did a couple of years ago but wanted to replay it since this is the week of The Open Championship. Lastly, I must admit I'm biased when it comes to Ben Curtis since he is a fellow Kent State Golden Flash alum. He is also doing a lot of great things in our area for kids in need. I highly recommend checking out his website at bencurtisfoundation.org.   ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES: Ben Curtis won the 2003 Open Championship at Royal St. George's as a rookie in only his 16th start on the PGA Tour. He became the first golfer in 90 years to win a major championship in his first try. He would go on to win a total of four PGA events. Curtis also was the runnerup at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship and a member of the 2008 Ryder Cup Championship Team. Prior to his professional career, he was formerly the world's number one ranked amateur after winning three Ohio Amateur titles, earning NCAA All-American honors three times at Kent State University, and reaching the semifinals of the 1999 of the prestigious U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach. He retired from professional golf in 2017.  He now leads the Ben Curtis Golf Academy, as well as the Ben Curtis Family Foundation which seeks to alleviate childhood hunger in Northeast Ohio. ABOUT RAY SCOTT AND THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITEA memoir of hard lessons learned in the racially segregated and sometimes outright racist NBA of the early '60s by celebrated NBA player and first Black Coach of the Year, Ray Scott.Ray Scott was part of the early wave of Black NBA players like Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain who literally changed how the game of professional basketball is played, leading to the tremendously popular financial blockbuster the NBA is today. Scott was a successful 6'9" forward/center after being chosen by the Detroit Pistons as the #4 pick of the 1961 NBA draft, and then again after he was named head coach of the Pistons in 1972, winning Coach of the Year in the spring of 1974-the first Black man ever to capture that honor.Scott's is a story of quiet persistence, hard work, and, most of all, respect. He credits the mentorship of NBA player and coach Earl Lloyd and talks about fellow Philly native Wilt Chamberlain and friends Muhammad Ali and Aretha Franklin, among many others. Scott has lived through one of the most turbulent times in our nation's history, especially the time of assassinations of so many Black leaders at the end of the 1960s. Through it all, his voice has remained quiet and measured, transcending all the sorrows with steadiness. This is his story, told in collaboration with well-known basketball writer, former college player, and CBA coach Charley Rosen. Racism in the world of sports is still all over the news-from Brian Flores's racial discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, to Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva being allowed to compete in the Olympics while African-American runner Sha'Carri Richardson was banned, to the prolonged detainment of Black WNBA star Brittney Griner in Russia. And while we still have much work to do to make equality a reality, The NBA in Black and White answers the question "How did we go from there being only white players in the NBA to the highest paid athletes in the NBA being Black?" and reminds us of the progress we've made toward equal opportunity and fair compensation for people of color.Philly native John Raymond "Ray" Scott's college career began at the University of Portland. After three seasons in the professional Eastern Basketball League, he was chosen as the 4th pick in the 1961 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. He spent six years with the Pistons as a stand-out rebounder and deadly shooter from the perimeter, and another five years playing for the Baltimore Bullets and the Virginia Squires. Then, in October 1972, Scott was promoted from Assistant to Head Coach of the Detroit Pistons, thanks in part to strong support from former coach Earl Lloyd who, a decade earlier, had scouted Scott and recommended that he be the Pistons top pick. Two years later he was named NBA Coach of the Year, the first African-American to win the coveted award. From 1976 to 1979, Scott was Men's Basketball Head Coach at Eastern Michigan University. Today, he lives with his family in Eastern Michigan, not far from Detroit. This is his first book. ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE NBA IN BLACK AND WHITE"Scott, who became the first Black coach to be named NBA Coach of the Year in 1974, delivers a moving reflection on his influential career.Fans of the sport will relish Scott's insights, including how the game's been changed by the emphasis on three-point shooting.A valuable addition to hoops history." - Publishers Weekly"This is a truly wonderful book that reveals the difficulties of the quota system and all the other obstacles that African American NBA players had to face when the league began to integrate in the mid-1950s and beyond. It also tells how Ray and many other great Black players managed to achieve the fulfillment of their respective talents. Indeed, Ray was the rare successful NBA player who became a successful NBA coach. Along the way, the plight of 'ordinary' Black citizens who succeeded and/or tragically failed in facing their own racial barriers is addressed. Above all, Ray's honesty, intelligence, and deep understanding of how social injustice influences every aspect of all our collective and individual lives, makes this narrative totally relevant today. There's enough wisdom in here to enlighten and inspire even people who have little or no interest in basketball. Incredibly powerful-a must read." - Hubie Brown, NBA Coach of the Year (1978, 2004), member of the Basketball Hall of Fame"Ray Scott has chronicled his four-decades-long basketball odyssey beautifully. It is a thoughtful and well-written book about the transforming landscape of the NBA. He shares his firsthand knowledge and experiences and adds value to an era not so often discussed. I have been blessed to have known Ray, and blessed even more to have someone who trudged through the early days of the NBA take me along with him for the journey."- Marques Johnson, twelve-year NBA player, five-time All Star"I first met Ray Scott in 1965 when I was a rookie player for the Detroit Pistons. I was scared to death of the challenges I faced trying to make it in the NBA, but Ray welcomed me to the team. As one of the veterans, he organized all the players to work out and prepare for camp together. It meant the world to me, and I have never forgotten how he treated me. Ray's book brought back so many good memories from my NBA days. He was and is a leader and a wonderful example of how we should all respect, get along, and love each other. Ray is a good man."- Tom Van Arsdale, 12-year NBA player, three-time All StarGet the book here:https://www.amazon.com/NBA-Black-White-Memoir-Trailblazing/dp/164421198X

Sam Mitchell played professional basketball for 18 years in the NBA and overseas, then went on to coach, including being the 2007 NBA Coach of the Year when he led the Toronto Raptors. He knows a lot about the sport and lessons learned, on and off the court! (5:19) We start our chat talking "March Madness" as most of the men's NCAA Tournament basketball games start today/Thursday. He talks about his experience playing for the Mercer Bears, helping take them to their first NCAA Tourney in the early 1980's. Mitchell also gets honest about kids missing out when they don't play college ball, and how the anyone can beat anybody in "Big Dance," where the little guys have a shot. After we hear a little about his post-pro career fitness, (9:59) Mitchell says he had a great NBA career with memorable relationships but is more focused on what's ahead, with new young basketball stars. (12:04) As a now basketball TV analyst, he also gives his take on NBA during COVID, how fans are back and how God is teaching us through truth vs. alternative facts. On the faith aspect of things, (16:00) Mitchell says he didn't bring personal, spiritual beliefs in the locker room as a coach, but possibly in 1-on-1 settings. He also remembers playing against basketball icons like Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, but also knows the more stardom and money someone has, the more of a target they have. (20:19) Mitchell talks about a few hot topic teams as we inch closer to the NBA playoffs, with "no clear-cut favorites." (22:19) We close by talking how important it is for him and all of us to give back to our community, especially kids that are struggling, challenging us to show that support! One way he does that is through annual camps and also the SaMarc Foundation Boys & Girls BiCity HS Basketball Awards Luncheon, happening today (March 17) at 11:30am in Columbus GA.
