After 20 years in Los Angeles and a career in the film industry, Jody Curtis was guided to the Mojave desert in 2008.   A seeker of deeper spiritual understanding from an early age, her first experience with desert was visiting her Mom and step-dad during one of their annual stops in Slab City. Taking several days to wind down from the stress of the city, Jody often found she didn’t want to leave the desert to go back home.   Just after leaving her job at NBC, Jody was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. A defining moment for Jody, her first thought was 'I have to get out of the city and get back to nature’.   By this time, her Mom had settled in Landers and so, Jody moved to the desert, having purchased a home sight unseen.   Traveling back and forth from this desert, Jody often passed the Institute of Mentalphysics and wondered what the place was and try as she might, was never able to locate information online. After moving to the desert, that curiosity remained, Jody telling her mother, “I think I’m supposed to work at this place.” One day she decided to just walk in and talk to the Director and a few months later, Jody, a web designer, was working there, combing through historical documents and records to create an online presence for what is also known as the Joshua Tree Retreat Center.   During her ten years working at the Institute of Mentalphysics, Jody became a Reverend and teacher of the breath work.   In this episode, Jody also shares the background and history of the Institute and of Founder Edwin Dingle, named Ding Le Mei by his eastern teachers.   Jody is now putting the Mentalphysics teachings into the world through her online classes and is also Founder and creator at Empower House Productions sharing audio and video affirmations and guided meditations to heal and empower body, mind and spirit.   If you're interested in checking out the breath work class, currently every Wednesday at 11 a.m., dial in using Zoom conferencing, Meeting ID 882 7880 8645 and use the password: Wellness.   Follow Empower House Productions on Facebook, click here: https://www.facebook.com/EmpowerHouseProductions/

Born in France, Marie Bobin's first experience with desert was a trip with friends to Death Valley. It was a last minute, 'let’s get out of LA for the weekend' kind of trip – in August. Marie says they drove a lot, got out of the car to snap a few photos, then jumped back into the air conditioned car.   Marie's family moved to California when she was in her preteen years.  With a background in performing arts and producing, Marie started her career in London with a pub theatre, producing shows for four years and then came back to the states working with museums and cultural centers. Though she has lived in Thailand and London, she says she always returns to the Golden State.   Looking for a change of pace from Los Angeles and being self-described national park lovers, Marie and her husband were considering areas near Yellowstone and other places. In this episode, Marie says when she mentioned Joshua Tree, her husband said, "The desert?!", but after a number of short day trips out here, he started to fall in love with the place just as Marie had. They put their house in Topanga on the market - it sold in 10 days. Marie immediately found work. Marie says, "The doors just kept opening, confirmation that this is where we were supposed to be".   Moving to the area without knowing anyone, Marie attended Kip’s book club, 2nd Saturdays in Joshua Tree and other events around town, where she started to meet her community.   With a background in cultural programming and consulting, Marie became involved with local non-profits Harrison House, Joshua Tree Retreat Center and Mil-Tree, of which she in now holds a board position. She also met Jenny Kane, Executive Director of Arts Connection, where the idea for applying for the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant happened. Marie says she immediately recognized the good work so many Morongo Basin organizations were already doing. It was her desire to produce an event that would support and enhance their work. Being familiar with the NEA Big Read grant, Marie was certain it would be the right vehicle to pull all these organizations together for one big cultural event.   An entire month of free events - with something for everyone - are scheduled during September, beginning with the kick off at Mojave Desert Land Trust Headquarters on September 7, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To view and download the schedule of events, visit Arts Connection of San Bernardino or check out Big Read Morongo Basin on Facebook and follow them on Instagram @BigReadMorongoBasin.

Having just returned from a silent meditation retreat, Annette shares her experience spending several days in silence in the desert. Her year begins with thoughts about meaning-making and self-compassion. She continues her post-law journey living in “experimental” mode, and observing what energizes her (helping others, yes; working for the pursuit of money, no). She recalls how she moved through much of her early life conforming to a mold of a good student who could get a good job, and hiding those parts of herself that might not have fit that mold. Now she seeks to make those unseen parts more visible and to show up as her whole self in life. Meanwhile, Sarah finds herself gripped, on and off, with debilitating depression. She considers the possible contributing factors to the depression, including being postpartum, the physical isolation and time constraints stemming from being a stay-at-home mom, and the absence of creative work in her life. She describes the difficulty of creating distance between herself and her illness and how, on many days, simply getting out of bed is challenging. This year, she simply seeks to live her life, with all its contradictions. Resources and References: Joshua Tree Retreat Center: http://jtrcc.org/ Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor E. I was fortunate to meet Dr. Steven Greer (www.siriusdisclosure.com) at a workshop in Joshua Tree Retreat Center earlier this year. I have heard many of his lectures on YouTube, as well as reading his book and seeing the documentaries he produced. I see Dr. Greer's work as very important to humanity at this time. Early in his life, Dr. Greer had a near death experience as well as several ET contacts, and these experiences dramatically affected his life and view of reality, as you may imagine. On the Saturday show, we have started to get into deeper aspects of consciousness and the environment around us that is beyond our usual perception, but which is just part of our normal scope of experience that we have forgotten, and can have again. Most of the discussion related to beings around us that we do not see, has been about beings (I call them people) on frequencies faster than the one we call reality. They are mostly not ET's, they belong to other dimensions. Dr. Greer is aware of them too, but has put a lot of emphasis in his own work on ET's (extraterrestrials, physical beings not from our particular planet). He has had numerous contacts and direct communications with ET's, but even more important, he has been able to successfully teach others how to initiate this kind of contact by themselves or in small groups of friends with the same interest.
