Air Pollution is responsible for around seven million deaths every year. Governments around the world have been trying to tackle it with a variety of measures. But now, the fight against air pollution is increasingly catching the imagination of artists and designers. In Al Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi, a 7m high installation, Smog Free Tower by Dutch Studio Roosegaarde, bills itself as "the world's first smog vacuum cleaner." It purifies 30,000 cubic metres of air per hour and the dirt filtered from this urban smog is compressed into jewellery - Smog Free Ring - sold to finance the project. In Delhi and Bangalore, AIR INK is "turning air pollution into ink solution" by capturing the black particles that float in the atmosphere and turning them into ink. Founder Anirudh Sharma and His co-founder, Nikhil Kaushik, say taking air pollution and turning it into as means the more AIR INK on your page, the less pollution in your lungs.

To create the carbon tiles, Carbon Craft Design partnered with Graviky Labs, an Indian company that previously created "Air Ink," a technology that captures carbon soot from cars and factories, and converts it into ink and paint. Graviky Labs uses a filter device to capture carbon soot from diesel exhaust and fossil fuel generators, removes contaminants such as heavy metals and dust from the soot, and gives the purified carbon to Carbon Craft Design in powder form.

While air pollution is a major concern for humanity right now, it also presents us with a great opportunity to be up-cycled into sustainable products. We are joined today by Tejas Sidnal, CEO of Carbon Craft Design, a consultancy and research firm focusing on addressing climate change by manufacturing tiles out of carbon! We talk about the principles underscoring Tejas' journey as a student and entrepreneur, as well as milestones, goals, and what lies ahead for his brilliant firm. Tejas begins by sharing about the concepts of biomimicry and the relationship between architecture and air pollution, explaining how they informed his education leading up to the founding of Carbon Craft Design. True biomimicry is a fascinating concept, and he explains how design that incorporates it differs from that which merely takes exclusively morphological or functional cues from nature. From there, we get into some of the hurdles that come with the path he has chosen, talking about mindset shifts required by business and customers as far as adopting his product, and the high costs that come with sustainable practices. Tejas also gets into the process of how his tiles are created, touching on his company's collaboration Air-Ink, a project that captures pollution and makes it into (you guessed it) ink! Today's exchange with Tejas explores the road ahead for Carbon Craft Design too, and Tejas shares about his goal to make, and entire building out of carbon up-cycled materials sometime soon!

Every year, more than 4 million people die from direct and indirect exposure to air pollution. Think about that for a second. The very thing that keeps us alive is also the one that’s killing us. Even with problems that seem unsolveable, there are incredible people working day and night to find solutions — like Anirudh Sharma, cofounder and president of Graviky Labs and the chronic inventor behind AIR-INK. Before AIR-INK, Anirudh built Lechal, a vibrating shoe that aimed to help the visually-impaired navigate their worlds better. With Anirudh’s passion to use technology as a tool for good, AIR-INK, the first ink made entirely out of air pollution, was created. At Graviky Labs where AIR-INK is processed, air pollution is recycled and turned into hydrated, industrial-grade pigments and inks. Graviky Labs’ technology can be used to capture carbon pollution from the exhaust of generators and small chimney stacks. With AIR-INK, pollutants which could have been in the lungs of millions of people, or mixed into our water and land streams are now beautifully resting on murals and paintings. In the 2019 MIT Solve Challenge, AIR-INK was selected as one of 32 Solver teams out of 1400 applicants from over 100 countries. MIT Solve is an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which advances lasting solutions from tech entrepreneurs to address the world's most pressing problems. —— Purchase our 1st MERCH featuring our ‘Society of Kind Humans’ shirt: sincerelyhueman.com/store Learn more about AIR-INK: www.graviky.com This episode was produced in partnership with MIT Solve. "Pollution is nothing but resources we're not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we've been ignorant of their value. ― Buckminster Fuller" Meet two designers turning environmental pollution into useful products. Anirudh Sharma and Graviky Labs collect carbon air pollution and turn it into ink for writing, drawing, and printing. They call it Air Ink and envision a future in which local newspapers are printed using a city’s own pollution.
