This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). In February of 2010, a distraught biology professor at the University of Alabama-Huntsville opened fire at a staff meeting, killing three colleagues and critically wounding three others. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. Bishop quickly appealed the tenure-committee's decision to university administration, but that, too, was denied. Nearly a year later, Bishop plotted a revenge attack against her department. Welcome to Our True Crime Podcast's original “12 Nightmares Before Christmas,” where we discuss a true crime story daily for the days leading up to December 24. Make sure to like, subscribe, and tune in each day.Today, we are going to the University of Alabama at Huntsville. It was February 12, 2010, and the day commenced like any other typical school day. The campus bustled with activity, featuring a mix of young students envisioning their future and more mature individuals returning to complete degrees they had embarked on years earlier. On that morning at UAH, Instructor Amy Bishop conducted her science classes, and her students later described the course as uneventful and routine. Meanwhile, a meeting for the biology department was slated for Room 369 in the Shelby Center for Science and Technology, which housed both the Biology and Mathematics departments. Amy Bishop joined her colleagues at the meeting, and for approximately 40 minutes, she sat silently among them. What would happen next would shock the academic community, leaving three families grieving and many asking why.Join Cam and Jen of Our True Crime Podcast to discuss A Fine Line Between Genius and Insanity: Amy Bishop: Day 3: The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHSMusic by our EP Nico @theinkypawprintSources:https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/02/11/a-loaded-gunhttps://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/21/us/21bishop.htmlhttps://www.al.com/news/2022/08/amy-bishops-son-seth-anderson-died-in-unintentional-shooting-huntsville-teen-indicted.htmlhttps://www.al.com/topic/Amy%20Bishop/index.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/amy-bishops-son-seth-bishop-200037215.htmlhttps://criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com/types-of-crime/school-violence/amy-bishop/https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/amy-bishop-husband-alleged-university-alabama-shooter-loving-mother-wife/story?id=9883895https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3280081/Former-Alabama-professor-shot-6-3-fatally-apologizes.htmlhttps://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2010/02/amy_bishop_alleged_uah_shooter.htmlThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3647242/advertisement
When you think of a stereotypical school shooter, you probably don't picture Dr. Amy Bishop, a middle-aged mother and biology professor. In 2010, she executed three of her colleagues at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), where she had recently been denied tenure. Initially, many thought Amy had just “snapped,” but investigators discovered that she had a history of workplace problems, and this wasn't the first time that she had killed someone.
Amy Bishop had a seemingly normal childhood, with an average home-life, and a good upbringing. Her brother Seth, however, was the star child in her eyes, and her rage grew for him as she got older. Bonus Episode: Amy Bishop We hear about school shootings all too often these days. These tragedies are typically perpetrated by a mentally unstable juvenile lashing out at his or her schoolmates to express frustration or rage. But what about when the shooter is a teacher? And not just a teacher – an esteemed Harvard-educated college professor? The February 2010 shootings by Professor Amy Bishop of 6 of her University of Alabama colleagues at a biology staff meeting was shocking enough. But when police began to look into Professor Bishop's past, two other incidents came to light that could have been seen as significant warning signs that something was not right. The professor had other victims – and one was her own brother. Follow Campus Killings on Social Media. The meeting scheduled for 3:00 pm on February 12, 2010, was a mundane one. Routine, really. It was located on the third floor of the Shelby Center for Science and Technology at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. Thirteen professors and associated staff in the biology department were gathered in a non-descript conference room. The head of the biology department took a seat and turned to the person next to him, to pass her a printed agenda...and Amy Bishop took it calmly not letting on, at all, as to the all-consuming rage boiling just under the surface of her entire being as she thought of her purse nearby and the loaded handgun inside that was easily accessible for what she had planned.
