The U.S. military teaches recruits to function together as a well-oiled machine—and for young people who dream of joining the most elite forces, it requires discipline, commitment, and loyalty, not to mention the courage to put yourself in harm's way for the greater good. For the ones with the deepest commitment, there has to be a fire in the belly that drives them to keep their eye on the prize, no matter what the risks. Most of the time this sets the stage for great achievements. But sometimes, the personality type that lends itself to flawless dedication can teeter over the line into feverish obsession. Where's the line? When you've cultivated a “failure is not an option” attitude your entire life, how do you put the brakes on when that determination starts to bleed into your personal relationships? Join us for the story of one of the most infamous killer couples of the 1990s: Diane Zamora and David Graham. I'm Joe Riley with KWBU, and this is Likely Stories.Every couple of weeks, I visit the Waco McLennan County Library and browse the New Book shelves. That's where I saw Bringing Ben Home: A Murder, A Conviction, and the Fight to Redeem American Justice. Actually, it was the author's name that first caught my eye – Barbara Bradley Hagerty is currently a contributing writer at The Atlantic. Before that, she spent 19 years reporting on justice issues and religion for NPR. I checked the book out because I've always been impressed by her work.
The story of 1600+ victims on January 6, 2021, is captured by Jesus Dellamora (JD) Rivera. JD was one of many arrested soon after the peaceful protest at the Capital on that day. This attack against these peaceful protestors was a 'deep state' attempt to undermine the will of the American voters. It did not happen in a vacuum. JD was an 8-year Marine Veteran. He was at the Capital Hill Steps providing video for a local television station. Nonetheless, just 2 weeks later 20+ FBI agents arrested JD in his home in Pensacola, Florida. 8 months later he left prison, with the first two months spent in solitary confinement for a misdemeanor charge of 'trespassing'. His military training and faith kept him strong. Many others were not so lucky. On January 20, 2025, President Trump provided all with a full pardon. His story tells us about the best of America and the worst. We MUST seek criminal promoting the unjust prosecution of 1600+ peaceful protestors! Do what you can to help any J-6 victim of this bogus unjust arrest, prosecution, and imprisonment.A Stain On American Justice ~ JD Rivera Tells His J-6 Storyon the GrassRoots TruthCast with Gene ValentinoORIGINAL MEDIA SOURCE(S):‣ Originally Recorded on March 4, 2025‣ GrassRoots TruthCast: Season 2, Episode 276‣ Image courtesy of: GeneValentino.com➡️ Join the Conversation: https://GeneValentino.com➡️ WMXI Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/NewsRadio981➡️ More WMXI Interviews: https://genevalentino.com/wmxi-interviews/➡️ More GrassRoots TruthCast Episodes: https://genevalentino.com/grassroots-truthcast-with-gene-valentino/➡️ More Broadcasts with Gene as the Guest: https://genevalentino.com/america-beyond-the-noise/ ➡️ More About Gene Valentino: https://genevalentino.com/about-gene-valentino/
Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Larry Brock Jr., a January 6 defendant, joined Fantom Facts Society's "#1 Night Show on X" to expose his harrowing 372 days as a political prisoner. Convicted for his Capitol riot role, Brock detailed his abuses by 5 guards inside prison—127 days in solitary, near dangerous inmates—blaming the Bureau of Prisons' “domestic terrorist” label for his ordeal. Now free, he's on a mission to unveil court corruption, slamming Judge John Bates for upholding his two-year sentence despite legal shifts favoring leniency. With military grit, Brock vows to support his community, backing January 6 defendants via efforts like the Patriot Mail Project and fundraising on GiveSendGo. His fiery call to reclaim rights resonates with patriots, blending personal redemption with a crusade against systemic injustice. When we left you at the end of Part 1, fourteen year old Steven Stayner had escaped from seven years of captivity and abuse at the hands of child predator Kenneth Parnell—and he'd rescued Parnell's next intended victim, a little boy named Timmy White. The story made international headlines, and Steven Stayner became his hometown's living legend. It was March 1980, both boys were back home safe and Kenneth Parnell was behind bars where he belonged, waiting to go to trial. It seemed like a happy ending. But the story doesn't end there. The second half of the Stayner saga is even darker than the first. Justice is denied. Secrets come to light. Adults like to think of kids as the embodiment of innocence—and in a lot of ways, they are. But…remember what it was like to actually be a kid? Did other kids seem innocent to us then? Not so much. The playground could be a battle zone. Gym class could be Lord of the Flies. Kids have strong, complicated emotions just like we do, but without the impulse control that comes with a fully-developed prefrontal cortex. Most of the time, the worst thing that comes from that is a tantrum in the middle of Costco, or a loud, teary breakup in the middle school cafeteria that ends up going viral on TikTok. But for some kids, just like some adults, the outcome is much, much darker. Case 1: The story of a 14 year old aspiring serial killer who murdered his unsuspecting best friend. A four-term member of the Georgia House of Representatives, his world unraveled after a number of personal and professional setbacks, including a losing bid for the U.S. Congress.Soon, Poston found himself representing a most unusual client - a man once revered as a natural TV repairman who had also suffered several downfalls, including being accused of holding his wife captive in their basement for almost three decades before killing her. Poston went on to complete the representation of Alvin "Zenith Man" Ridley, and the community was shocked to hear the truth of what went on at the dilapidated house in Ringgold, Georgia.Only recently, Alvin Ridley was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which explains much about how throughout his life he was misunderstood by his community.Poston's first book is a story of redemption, of more than one man in Catoosa County, Georgia.Poston went on from this case to a distinguished career as a criminal defense lawyer, with cases featured on television's "Forensic Files," A&E's "American Justice," and several national publications. Zenith Man: Death, Love, and Redemption in a Georgia Courtroom by McCracken Poston Jr. https://amzn.to/49OrmAE Like a nonfiction John Grisham thriller with echoes of Rainman, Just Mercy, and a captivating smalltown Southern setting, this is the fascinating true story—sometimes humorous, sometimes heartbreaking—of an idealistic young lawyer determined to free an innocent neurodivergent man accused of murdering the wife no one knew he had. An inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice for readers of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Just Mercy. Was this small-town TV repair man “a harmless eccentric or a bizarre killer” (Atlanta Journal Constitution). For the first time, Alvin Ridley's own defense attorney reveals the inside story of his case and trial in an extraordinary tale of friendship and an idealistic young attorney's quest to clear his client's name—and, in the process, rebuild his own life. In October 1997, the town of Ringgold in northwest Georgia was shaken by reports of a murder in its midst. A dead woman was found in Alvin Ridley's house—and even more shockingly, she was the wife no one knew he had. McCracken Poston had been a state representative before he lost his bid for U.S. Congress and returned to his law career. Alvin Ridley was a local character who once sold and serviced Zenith televisions. Though reclusive and an outsider, the “Zenith Man,” as Poston knew him, hardly seemed capable of murder. Alvin was a difficult client, storing evidence in a cockroach-infested suitcase, unwilling to reveal key facts to his defender. Gradually, Poston pieced together the full story behind Virginia and Alvin's curious marriage and her cause of death—which was completely overlooked by law enforcement. Calling on medical experts, testimony from Alvin himself, and a wealth of surprising evidence gleaned from Alvin's junk-strewn house, Poston presented a groundbreaking defense that allowed Alvin to return to his peculiar lifestyle, a free man. Years after his trial, Alvin was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a revelation that sheds light on much of his lifelong personal battle—and shows how easily those who don't fit societal norms can be castigated and misunderstood. Part true crime, part courtroom drama, and full of local color, Zenith Man is also the moving story of an unexpected friendship between two very different men that changed—and perhaps saved—the lives of both. About the author McCracken King Poston, Jr. was born and raised in Catoosa County in Northwest Georgia. A four-term member of the Georgia House of Representatives, his world unraveled after a number of personal and professional setbacks, including a losing bid for the U.S. Congress. Soon, Poston found himself representing a most unusual client - a man once revered as a natural TV repairman who had also suffered several downfalls, including being accused of holding his wife captive in their basement for almost three decades before killing her. Poston went on to complete the representation of Alvin "Zenith Man" Ridley, and the community was shocked to hear the truth of what went on at the dilapidated house in Ringgold, Georgia. Only recently, Alvin Ridley was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, which explains much about how throughout his life he was misunderstood by his community. Poston's first book is a story of redemption, of more than one man in Catoosa County, Georgia. Poston went on from this case to a distinguished career as a criminal defense lawyer, with cases featured on television's "Forensic Files," A&E's "American Justice," and several national publications. He and his secretary continue to help Mr. Ridley, now eighty-one, making and getting him to appointments, and helping him navigate a neurotypical world.
In 1963, when the Supreme Court overturned Gideon v Wainwright, Justice Hugo Black wrote: “Even the intelligent and educated layman requires the guiding hand of counsel at every step in the proceedings against him. Without it, though he be not guilty, he faces the danger of conviction because he does not know how to establish his innocence.” The public defender is that legal bulwark that works for a balance in our justice system. For this BCR conversation we heard from two public defenders from Prince George's County Circuit Court. Yahshauh Ford and Brandon Ruben contrasted the public defender's nuanced, human approach to justice with the blunt force of the prosecutor. They spoke of the difficulty of establishing a rapport with their clients -- poor and, for the most part. African American -- who sense that justice will never apply to them in this country -- and of the unequal power of the better-paid prosecutor to control the charging and sentencing process. Lastly, the two enjoy a classic episode of American Justice, profiling the murder of Bobby Kent. Our TV doc this week is Season 8: Episode 33 of American Justice, "Payback for a Bully".
Stormy discusses the hypocrisy of the American Justice system and how she can be the star witness for the prosecution of Donald J. Trump in NY DA Alvin Bragg's “Hush Money Case,” but her own lawsuit against the former president can be thrown out of court. “They made a moral judgment,” she says. “Because I'm a porn star I don't deserve the same protection under the law.” But Stormy refuses to give up. “I'm a pain in the ass,” she says. Later, Stormy welcomes Kris Goldsmith to the show. The founder of Task Force Butler, Goldsmith is an Iraq veteran who has dedicated his life to hunting NEO NAZIS and helping veterans escape the grasp of right-wing extremism. Its end result, for Goldsmith, of a hard-lived life. Entering the Army as a teenager, he'd quickly risen to the rank of sergeant. But the horrors of the Iraq War left him with crippling, undiagnosed PTSD. A suicide attempt on the eve of being re-deployed in 2007 got Goldsmith booted from the service with a less-than-honorable discharge. Stripped of his rank, community, and G.I. Bill benefits, Goldsmith entered a dark spiral, which included sinking down rabbit holes of online extremism. With his one remaining lifeline — healthcare through the V.A. — Goldsmith clawed his way back to the surface. He became a veterans advocate, earned a degree from Columbia, and (four appeals later) finally got an upgrade to an honorable discharge. Along the way, helped secure congressional reforms in 2017 that enabled thousands of other vets to get medical help and challenge their own “bad paper.” During the Trump years, Goldsmith worked as chief investigator for Vietnam Veterans of America where he exposed a sophisticated Russian op that targeted U.S. veterans on Facebook to sow racial and political division. For Goldsmith, that open-source intelligence expertise soon gave him a leg up in exposing domestic threats, including fascist groups targeting American youth like Patriot Front. In the aftermath of the insurrection of Jan. 6, Goldsmith saw a need to give patriotic veterans a positive mission — uncovering extremists and insurrectionists in our midst. Task Force Butler's work centers on exposing the inner workings and public wrongdoing of neo-nazi groups through deep-dive intelligence reports that can give prosecutors the evidence they need to go after the hatemongers in court. The work takes a toll. Goldsmith has been sued, and doxxed by white supremacists. But he refuses to give up.

Peggy Carr didn't feel well. She was nauseous. She could barely speak. Her feet felt as though they were burning from the inside out. Her family rushed her to the hospital, but the doctors were stumped. They wondered if Peggy had the flu. They also wondered if it was all in her head. It wasn't. Over the next few days, her condition improved. Peggy was sent back home, only to become more ill than she'd been before. This time, a neurologist took a look at Peggy's symptoms and posited that she might have thallium poisoning. The doctor's hunch was correct. Nearly every member of the Carr household tested positive for thallium. And now for a note about our process.
