James “Kodi” Kodrowski (Alabama-Huntsville '01) is an entrepreneur, and at 45, plays professional hockey for the Singapore National Team. After starting in the oil and gas industry, Kodi built a life in Singapore, where he now runs a financial services firm. He was vital in the formation of the team in Singapore and is the current president of the Singapore Ice Hockey Association (SIHA). Kodi is also representing Singapore in the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship happening in Querétaro, Mexico, from April 27 – May 3, 2025. He joined The ATO Show from the ice rink for his interview. Kodi grew up in New Jersey and started playing hockey on a frozen pond behind his house with cousins and friends. He played junior A hockey in Montana before walking on to the Division I team at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, where he studied engineering. Though Kodi didn't arrive at college with any knowledge of fraternities, he found himself drawn to the people in ATO. They were academically serious, involved in community outreach, and committed to athletics—qualities that aligned with Kodi's values. He attended leadership conferences and met fellow members. After graduation, Kodi accepted a role with an international oil company because of one pitch: “We'll pay to fly you around the world.” Eventually, he settled in Singapore after meeting his now-wife. There, he transitioned out of the oil industry and into entrepreneurship, starting in restaurants (a nod to his mother's dream of owning one), and later building a financial services company, Right Choice Capital Group.Today, Right Choice operates in Singapore and the Philippines, providing business loans to small and mid-sized enterprises. The company has grown into a group with a technology arm and a stake in a small bank. Kodi is also deeply engaged in advocacy work through his businesses, promoting financial literacy, healthy lifestyles, and support for underprivileged families.Kodi was instrumental in forming the Singapore National Hockey team. He began by playing casually in Singapore and volunteering to help run the local hockey association. Eventually, he took an active role in helping the association gain local recognition from Singapore's sports authority. After local recognition, Kodi led the process of applying for and securing membership with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This membership was necessary for Singapore to compete in international tournaments and officially field national teams. Once recognition was in place, Kodi helped create the men's national team. He coached the team for the first few years, and in 2016, when he was granted citizenship in Singapore, he was invited to return to the team as a player. He had to lose 20 pounds to keep up with his teammates who are half his age.
In this deeply personal and resonant episode, longtime hospice nurse and podcast host of The Heart of Hospice, Helen Bauer, BSN RN CHPN®, shares an intimate look at the soul of hospice nursing — the part that's rarely documented but always deeply felt. With more than seven years behind the mic and a career alongside patients and families at the bedside, Helen reflects on the intimacy and intensity of hospice care, and the challenges of translating those sacred moments into clinical notes and checkboxes. Together, we explore the personhood-centered mindset that defines exceptional hospice nursing: arriving as a blank slate, open and eager to learn who the patient is, then crafting care that honors the individual's story, values, and needs. Helen speaks candidly about the emotional toll of the work, the cumulative grief nurses carry, and the resilience it takes to keep showing up — not just for patients, but for ourselves. Listeners will hear reflections on: The artistry and difficulty of painting a picture through documentation How hospice nurses excel at education and advocacy, even outside traditional care settings What we're doing well as a community — and where we can grow The value of Hospice Navigation Services and empowering families with information The quiet power of showing up, day after day, with care and presence This episode is a tribute to hospice nurses everywhere — a reminder that your work matters, your presence is powerful, and you are just as important as the care you provide. Whether you're a hospice nurse, a health care professional, or a family member navigating end-of-life care, this episode will speak to the heart of what it means to accompany someone at life's end — with compassion, courage, and creativity. In this episode, we explore the profound impact of Kelli Anspach MSN, CV-BC, NPD-BC, CHPN®'s thriving and sustainable training program, which has successfully trained more than 1,000 hospital nurses over the past 10 years through the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) program, founded by Betty Ferrell PhD, MSN, CHPN®. By providing nurses with the essential skills and knowledge to lead compassionate palliative care conversations, this initiative empowers staff to facilitate critical "goals of care" discussions with patients and families. In this episode, Kelli and Brett discuss how this training not only enhances collaboration with palliative care teams but also drives improved patient satisfaction and better overall care outcomes. Additionally, the conversation takes a closer look at the return on investment (ROI) for hospitals and demonstrates how training nurses across all service lines is a cost-effective strategy to elevate patient care, boost nurse confidence, and foster a more supportive health care environment. With the right education, staff can empower frontline nurses across various serious illness service lines to make a lasting, positive impact on patient care. HPNA is proud to partner with Betty Ferrell and City of Hope to offer virtual ELNEC Train-the-Trainer courses twice per year. Charlie's Bio I'm a native of Southwest Huntsville, living in the same neighborhood where I grew up. My single mother and my grandfather raised me. My life has had a lot of ups and downs. As a kid, I was in and out of trouble, but I eventually turned myself around, graduated from Madison Academy, a private Christian school, in 2000. From there, I went on to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning a B.S. in Biology in 2004, later adding coursework in Chemistry from the University of Alabama-Huntsville. When my grandfather was alive, we were an upper middle-class family, but he passed away before I graduated college, and like many families, we descended into financial ruin. During that time, I worked a variety of additional jobs that included tending bar, working security and anything to try to make ends meet while attempting to help my mother save her home from foreclosure. We never made it. Even with my help, she lost her home because we could never get ahead of the bills. Between 2011 and 2014, I lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with my childhood best friend, who was in the Navy. This point of my life gave me a window into how the United States Navy, and more broadly, the United States Armed Forces operate. I also witnessed first-hand how mental health issues can affect one's life as my friend eventually committed suicide due to issues that remained unaddressed during his time in the service and remains one of my biggest reasons I ran for political office. I firmly believe that we need to provide greater support to our Armed Services members, both in their duties while serving our country and in mental health issues. Our current and retired military members deserve our support, going beyond lip service to ensure that they lead happy and productive lives. Unlike most people who have run for office, I am not connected, nor am I independently wealthy. I am like you, trying to make a living. My business experience consists mainly of working in the management in the rental car industry, first as a manager with a branch of Avis Rental Cars in Virginia Beach and then in parking with the Huntsville Madison County Airport Authority after I moved back to Alabama in 2014 and running my own company. These experiences have shaped me into who I am today and form the basis of who I am. My grandfather, a college professor who instilled in me a thirst for knowledge, so I began learning about many different things from when I was five years old, biology, chemistry, physics, you name it. I spend every day studying something. I am an expert on history and military tactics, having read multiple volumes of books. My only goal is to get smarter every day and learn more so I can help our country. In addition, I am an avid sports fan and enjoy watching every sport. During my time in Virginia, I also helped coach a now-defunct football team at Hampton Roads Junior College, where I also helped mentor these young players in other aspects of their lives. Dr. Roy Spencer has an extensive scientific pedigree. He's a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama - Huntsville, and the US Science Team leader for the AMSR-E aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. He's been lauded by the American Meteorological Society for his groundbreaking work monitoring Earth's temperature fluctuations. So when he expresses a scientifically-backed hypothesis that climate change is part of a naturally-occurring cycle and that human impact is small and possibly negligible, it carries a great deal of weight. Instead, he's been mocked and challenged by untrained activists, and even had his own job explained to him by a reporter on national television. Today, he joins the program to discuss his work, as well as his concerns about activism- and ideology-driven government weighing down scientific research. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/victoria-taft/support

SEASON 2 EPISODE 123: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The Kansas City Super Bowl Parade shooting took place on the sixth anniversary of the Parkland shooting. And it took place on the sixteenth anniversary of the Northern Illinois University shooting. And two days ago was the anniversary of the Michigan State shooting. And next Monday will be twelve years since Alabama-Huntsville and two years since Portland and seventeen since Bethel Alaska and and and... We are here because mass shootings - and the bullshit about "Good Guys With Guns" and "equip the police better" - are the backbone of the gun industry and the politicians and judges and states it owns. And so we will have to financially break the backs of that industry and those politicians and judges and states. Because now it's them or us. B-Block (23:05) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A match made in TV Old Age Heaven: NewsNation hires Geraldo. Rep. Greg Murphy implies Vice President Harris is stupid - and mispronounces her name. And if the latest January 6 arrested suspect is named Method, the joke is inevitable. C-Block (29:15) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I offered Netflix ownership of the news industry. Its leaders worried only about the subtitles, and what would happen if one day the shows didn't upload. Seriously. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's Thursday and David Waldman and Greg Dworkin are here asking questions that you didn't know you had, with answers that you didn't know you needed. But now you do! We remain under a cloud of mass shootings. The Kansas City Super Bowl Parade shooting took place on the 6th anniversary of the Parkland shooting. And it took place on the 16th anniversary of the Northern Illinois University shooting. And 2 days ago, was the anniversary of the Michigan State shooting. And next Monday will be 12 years since Alabama-Huntsville and 2 years since Portland and 17 since Bethel Alaska and… pretty cloudy. It's all a nightmare, but at least we have Gop failure to cheer us. MAGA is a schadenfreude conveyor belt overflowing with potentially endless delights whipped up by Chef de Àne Donald Trump and his bumbling assistant Mike Johnson. It's not all Republicans stepping on rakes and falling into their own Burmese Tiger traps, though. A lot of this is happening because Democrats are beating them. It's time for President Joe Biden to reveal that there's a sun behind the clouds. Apparently, Republicans cribbed their ideas from Eastern Europe. In the meantime, Donald Trump heads from all of his civil courts to the first of his criminal courts this March 25. Pete Hoekstra takes over the Authentic No. 1 Michigan Republican Party, just down the street from Kristina Karamo's A-1 Original Michigan Republican Party. Republicans probably expect that Russian space nukes might overshadow all of their bad news… and they could be correct. The Mayorkas impeachment has done all of the damage that they could expect to get out of it. Let's pop a couple for William “Bill” Post, inventor of the Pop Tart and quite possibly a Keebler Elf...
UWF Women's Basketball Coach Stephanie Yelton earned her 200th win with a 66-57 road victory over Alabama Huntsville on Saturday. She also celebrated the 30th anniversary of her national championship as a player for the UNC Lady Tarheels at Chapel Hill on Sunday.
This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). In February of 2010, a distraught biology professor at the University of Alabama-Huntsville opened fire at a staff meeting, killing three colleagues and critically wounding three others. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. Bishop quickly appealed the tenure-committee's decision to university administration, but that, too, was denied. Nearly a year later, Bishop plotted a revenge attack against her department. Family is where life begins, and love never ends. We came into this world with the gift of family, which gives us particular joy and belongingness. Within this nurturing environment, we learn the meaning of love, develop our identities, and cultivate the values that shaped who we are today. It has been said that the memories we make with our family are everything. However, many of us in the past years have encountered challenges that hinder our ability to connect and come together. Particularly, the trials of individual struggles and the impact of the global pandemic have tested our familial bonds. Therefore, we must strive to unite everybody in the family through gatherings and reunions that nurture unity, create enduring memories, foster relationships, and honor our shared heritage. And though organizing and sustaining such events often come with their fair share of challenges, we must cherish the opportunity to gather with our loved ones in good times rather than waiting until we face the loss of cherished family members. Thus, life's uncertainties must teach us the importance of seizing the present moment and savoring the joy of being in each other's company. Coach Tony Thompson is a father, sports coach, podcaster, and the president of The RIZE Nil sports agency, which connects athletes and brands to maximize exposure to clients worldwide. The "RIZE NIL" is a sports marketing agency focused on making sure our clients receive revenue opportunities for the work they put into expanding the Brands image. They also assist their clients in being part of an excellent opportunity to extend their careers as collegiate student-athlete while helping brands succeed in the marketplace. Thomas Burgess II is a father, financial advisor, and minister of God. Thomas is the older brother of our Sports Doctor, Dr. Derrick Burgess. In this special episode with Coach Tony and Thomas will delve into the importance of family, legacy, and unity. Today's episode will teach us how coming together as a family adds value to our identity and its remarkable impact on future generations. Be inspired by the lives and passions of our guests' speakers to chase their dreams, help others succeed, and prioritize family despite life's challenges and setbacks. Coach Tony Thompson "If you ever allow the momentum to die, it's hard to get it back." – Thomas Burgess II "The role of men of the family is to be the leaders that move forward into the next decade." – Thomas Burgess II "Not using social media as a crutch, but using it as a stimulus to be able to increase the impact that we can have with each other and being able to leverage off of each other." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "We have to get back to the basics of communication and family, which is unity because the more, the more unified we are, the more we can do." – Dr. Derrick Burgess "If you don't make family reunion a priority, it won't happen." – Dr. Derrick Burgess Connect with Coach Tony Thompson: Email: prospectsontherize@yahoo.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/chilllman7 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tony-thompson-206a33a/ Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/6ZjtvhCAGbvV5JOTor5MEp Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. Guest: Tony LyzaWhen you think of tornadoes, you probably think of a big supercell in Tornado Alley in Texas or Oklahoma or Kansas. However, the idea of a “tornado alley” can be misleading. Tornadoes in the Deep South are just as likely to occur and perhaps more deadly than in the Great Plains. Today's guest is part of one of the largest and most comprehensive severe storm field campaigns in the Southeastern United States. The field program is called PERilS - Propagation, Evolution, and Rotation in Linear storms. Tony Lyza, from the University of Alabama Huntsville, is here today to discuss the plan for the research and what scientists hope to discover.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 444: Becca JordanMy guest this week on Voices in my Head is singer and songwriter, Becca Jordan. Her new album, Becoming Ordinary, Debuted last month to great acclaim and she's here to speak with me about it this week. —Rick Lee JamesBecca Jordan In Her Own Words: I'm a wandering songbird. I earned my B.A. in Communications from University in Alabama-Huntsville. It was during college doing all that writing that I started dabbling in songwriting. I recorded my first EP, Love Shows Up, in 2012 with Robbie Seay producing.I moved to Nashville in 2015, worked at a non-profit, started singing in church and absorbing the creative community through concerts and coffee dates with fellow creatives. I traveled to L'Abri in England in the fall of 2016, where I soaked up the reality that the Lord is Lord over all things, stuff like cooking and washing dishes, not just mysterious creative processes like songwriting. I came back to Nashville to plant some roots and started working with the elderly. (Not on purpose, really, but because God has a sense of humor. I needed to learn some things I could only learn with them.) So I spent four years learning and observing the goodness of God in what felt like a quiet corner with folks that taught me what it meant to place my whole life before God as an offering. This is what my record, Becoming Ordinary, is about— leaving behind all the illusions of what I thought my life would be, and picking up what it is— mundane, sometimes deeply lonely, sometimes fraught with joy, and mostly just very ordinary— and giving it to God. College UpdateUtah Midfielder Jack Barron, c/o Utah Athletics/Ben HaslamThe Utah Utes fell to Jacksonville, 8-3, on Saturday. "I thought we had a great week of practice, so I didn't sense it there, but we definitely didn't handle pressure really well," said Utah head coach Brian Holman. "I thought we got manhandled there a little bit. I was really proud of our defense, though. I thought defensively our athleticism shows up. That's something I knew before the year started that most of our older, more veteran, guys are on the defensive side of the ball." (Recap | Box Score) The Utes will host Westminster next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Fans are not allowed at this time. Westminster took to the road and beat Montevallo, 15-8 (Recap | Box Score), on Friday then edged Alabama-Huntsville, 11-10 (Recap | Box Score), on Saturday. The Griffins will take to the road and face Colorado Mesa on March 27.The BYU Women's team will take on the Utes on March 20. Survey ResultsThank you to those who filled out the fandom survey. Here's a few interesting points to think about: 17 of 132 people who responded won't watch a professional game this year. That's interesting to me. I'd love to know why (leave a comment or send me an email). Not a surprise, but fun to look at. Be sure to follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Always an interesting statistic. Probably not a big surprise to most. I asked who would win the Boys and Girls High School championships and Corner Canyon (41 votes) and Park City (38 votes) were the top vote-getters. I asked people to send in their questions so here they are with my responses. I certainly don't know everything so feel free to leave a comment if you have a constructive answer. I also asked for input from a few others: Q: How in the world did Northridge get ranked below Davis/Fremont. People are wild.A: Great question! I heard Northridge beat Davis in the fall but we all know to put little stock into that. Let's see how the results pan out! Q: Best way to raise the overall competitive level of high school lacrosse in the state?A: This is a great question. There is the physical aspect of it: either getting current lacrosse athletes to train in the offseason/lift weights or to recruit other athletes at the school to join the ranks. Obviously improved stick skills from top to bottom and the mental side of the game need to be improved. 37% of people who responded to the survey are going to watch 0-5 professional games this year. There are college games on TV/ESPN+/YouTube, etc every weekend. You don't have to watch them this weekend but watch them in the summer/fall/winter if that works better for you. This goes for coaches too. Ask your coaches how many games they watched this weekend. The answer may surprise you. It's also crucial to build the local youth programs. Q: Don't sleep on Timpview.A: Believe me, I've heard from the T-Bird fans out there. 17 returning starters is a great foundation for a run to a title. Q: The reclassifying/current RPI model for playoff seedings at the end of the season is really bad. Please let Taylor Redd be a guest writer to explain how bad it is.A: Taylor, you have my email… Look, the grass is always greener on the other side. Let's be grateful we are playing games at all, regardless of how they are ranked. Only one team can win the title no matter how the teams get there. Q: How can we help get each participating high school a spotlight on your social media?A: Tag us when you post! I have no method to my madness but I'll do the best I can.Q: What were the high school rankings based off of?A: I believe this question is in regard to the region rankings which were based off the coaches votes in that region. Q: Will fans be able to attend high school lacrosse games?A: Consult the home team. They will surely have some sort of restriction so be sure to know before you go. Q: What are the best ways to continue to build momentum in the youth programs?A: Make it fun. The players have to have fun playing and the coaches have to have fun coaching. Having fun is contagious so if those things happen it will grow. One of my favorite years coaching was a 7/8th grade team combined with players from Highland, East and West. It was so fun to coach that team because the kids were having fun and it was a great time all around. Getting kids tons of touches in practices goes a long way. Q: Being in Nebo School District, sanctioning has been very disheartening. Nebo just hasn't been receptive to lacrosse where most all other high schools have been. A: We always knew there would be growing pains when sanctioning happened. It's manifested itself in many ways for a variety of teams. Nebo is used to having one team and have five now. That's pretty good in one year. We'll look back in 10 years and laugh at the things that plague us today. I should mention that we have a responsibility as a lacrosse community to represent the sport in the best light. Our actions are judged more than others. Q: What's happening with the coaches within Utah lacrosse. Many coaches took a pay cut going over into the schools. From whats been seen from this year and last year there are many coaches that have stepped down and many first time coaches as head coaches. A: If your primary reason for coaching lacrosse is money then coaching probably isn't for you. However, that doesn't mean coaches should coach for free. There's plenty of ways to get creative when it comes to pay, especially in the offseason while the team is ‘club'. A possible reason many coaches are stepping down is because being a head coach at a sanctioned high school takes a ton of off-the-field work. There's a reason the school encourages head coaches to be part of the faculty. A friend who is a head coach spent 10+ hours at the school last week doing admin work on top of 10+ hours coaching. Q: What's the future for girls lacrosse?A: It looks bright to me. We'll have the most high school teams we've ever had which in theory means more girls playing this year than any other year. My daughter just began playing at a newly formed 3/4 program this season. Q: What is the biggest need in Utah youth and high school lax right now?A: Hopefully you listened to the podcast! I'd say officials is the biggest one right now. Imagine a scenario where you get a call that your game is cancelled because there aren't enough refs. Wouldn't it be nice to have three refs at JV games this year? Coaches are always in need at every level. No one should coach alone. It's miserable. I've done it and it sucks. Once someone decides to coach, it's then crucial that they work to improve their coaching. There are many ways to do that. I think that's it for this week. If you've made it this far, thank you! Please forward this to a friend who also loves lacrosse.— Tim Haslam This is a public episode.
