Full Text of Readings Tuesday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 426 The Saint of the day is Saint Louis of France Saint Louis of France's Story At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God's anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Other kings had done the same, of course. Louis was different in that he actually interpreted his kingly duties in the light of faith. After the violence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice. Saint Louis of France “took the cross” for a Crusade when he was 30. His army seized Damietta in Egypt but not long after, weakened by dysentery and without support, they were surrounded and captured. Louis obtained the release of the army by giving up the city of Damietta in addition to paying a ransom. He stayed in Syria four years. Louis deserves credit for extending justice in civil administration. His regulations for royal officials became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the use of written records in court. Saint Louis of France was always respectful of the papacy, but defended royal interests against the popes, and refused to acknowledge Innocent IV's sentence against Emperor Frederick II. Saint Louis of France was devoted to his people, founding hospitals, visiting the sick, and like his patron Saint Francis, caring even for people with leprosy. He is one of the patrons of the Secular Franciscan Order. Louis united France—lords and townsfolk, peasants and priests and knights—by the force of his personality and holiness. For many years the nation was at peace. Every day, Louis had 13 special guests from among the poor to eat with him, and a large number of poor were served meals near his palace. During Advent and Lent, all who presented themselves were given a meal, and Louis often served them in person. He kept lists of needy people, whom he regularly relieved, in every province of his dominion. Disturbed by new Muslim advances, Louis led another crusade to North Africa in 1270. Within a month of their landing at Carthage, the army camp was decimated by disease. Louis himself died there at the age of 56. He was canonized 27 years later. Reflection Saint Louis of France was strong-willed, strong-minded. His word was trusted utterly, and his courage in action was remarkable. What is most remarkable was his sense of respect for anyone with whom he dealt, especially the “humble folk of the Lord.” To care for his people he built cathedrals, churches, libraries, hospitals and orphanages. He dealt with princes honestly and equitably. He hoped to be treated the same way by the King of Kings, to whom he gave his life, his family and his country.Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Everything comes to a head when an uninvited guest visits their bedroom.  Story 4: The 4th Floor Narrated by: Bodhi Crowe In the town of Las Vegas, New Mexico, there is an old ghost story that brings ghost hunters from all over the world to the tiny town. The story tells of a man who went crazy and trapped himself and his dog in their room on the fourth floor of the Plaza Hotel. As time went on, you could hear the dog scratching at the door and panting, trying to break free. You can still hear the dog today, and you can see the man in the window, pacing back and forth in his silent hell. He begins chasing her, but she escapes to her mother's car. The following day, police arrest an armed robbery suspect hiding outside her apartment building with a handgun pointed toward her living-room window. She later recognizes him on the news as the same man from the store. Story 2: The White Van Narrated by: Maxwell Glick Two six-year-old friends are riding their bikes when a rusted, windowless white van begins driving beside them. The men inside open the doors and say, “You grab one, I'll grab the other.” The girls race back to a nearby house. The van follows them and slowly passes the home before eventually leaving. Story 3: The JROTC Stalker Narrated by: Dacey Else A high-school freshman becomes friends with an older student in JROTC. His behavior gradually escalates from gifts and notes to surveillance, manipulation and stalking. After she rejects him, he appears outside her bedroom window. Security footage later reveals that he had been visiting her window every night for nearly a month. Other girls report similar behavior, but after the evidence is given to authorities, he mysteriously disappears. Story 4: The Abandoned Barn Narrated by: Ecnal J During the COVID-19 lockdown, two seven-year-old boys explore a hidden trail outside their neighborhood. Deep in the woods, they hear cries and discover an isolated barn surrounded by blood, broken glass and bloody handprints. One boy looks inside and screams, but he never tells anyone what he saw. In later years, the narrator repeatedly returns to the area but is unable to find the barn again. Story 5: The Blue Creature Narrated by: Katy Peterson A four-year-old girl slips outside her family's rural Texas home and encounters a wet, child-sized blue figure on the porch. She becomes transfixed by its eyes and then experiences a gap in her memory. She suddenly regains awareness at the dinner table with wet hair and clothes. Years later, her sister recalls that she had been behaving mechanically and seemed emotionally absent. The narrator believes the creature temporarily took control of her body. In his first interview with an Israeli media outlet since his confrontation with armed settlers and Israeli soldiers in the southern West Bank last week, Representative Ro Khanna spoke with Haaretz Podcast host Allison Kaplan Sommer in a wide-ranging conversation about the now-famous incident, the “cruelty” he witnessed in his visit to the West Bank, and how Israel’s “disproportionate and inhumane” behavior in the Gaza war has changed his policy positions and the way that both he – and Americans at large – view the Jewish state. "Israel has lost Americans under 50 – not just Democrats but Republicans," he said. “It is one of the most foolish strategies to have antagonized an entire American generation, and that's what Bibi Netanyahu has accomplished." In the interview, Khanna recounted how Israeli settlers mocked and antagonized his delegation, and parked their vehicle in front of his to block the road to Khirbet Zanuta, a Bedouin village in the South Hebron Hills that has been forcibly displaced by settler violence twice since 2023, despite a High Court ruling that requires Israeli authorities to safeguard the Palestinians’ return. "We were quickly told to get into our van, and they blocked our van from exiting,” he said, saying that the settlers and the IDF forces who “took their side” should be investigated and prosecuted. “You can't do that. I've called it detainment. You could call it false imprisonment." In reaction to subsequent statements on the incident issued by the Israeli military and top officials, he said that he was “more disturbed” by their “lies” than by “the incident itself.” Khanna, a California Democrat who has made it clear that he is interested in a presidential run in 2028 and that he plans to make Palestinian rights a central issue on his platform, added, “the next American president will demand the arrest of violent settlers.” Reiterating his belief that “Gaza was a genocide,” Khanna also said that anyone who “wants to see the cruelty of humanity” should “spend a day in the occupied West Bank." Quail habitat is the whole story. Kyle Hedges and Frank Loncarich spent five years following bobwhite quail across the Midwest, and the data pointed at one thing over and over: disturbed ground grows birds. On this episode, host Nick Larson brings back Kyle Hedges and Frank Loncarich, two biologists who helped run one of the largest quail habitat studies in the region. From 2014 to 2018 they monitored 500 nests, radio-collared chicks, and even collared raccoons to see how predators move through cover. What came out of it is a genuinely hopeful finding: you can grow quail if you're deliberate about it. The number that anchors the conversation: 95% of their brood locations were in habitat that had been burned, grazed, or otherwise disturbed within the previous 12 months. Grassland managed with fire and cattle beat the old broken-up dairy-farm model on nest success, on survival, and on eggs per nest. The thick, idle CRP field that looks so birdy in January? The chicks can't get through it. Before the quail talk, Nick and the guys swap turkey-season stories and take on the old myth that turkeys are eating quail and grouse into decline. The short version: the timing doesn't add up, and it never did. It's a habitat problem wearing a predator's costume. Quail habitat is the whole story. Kyle Hedges and Frank Loncarich spent five years following bobwhite quail across the Midwest, and the data pointed at one thing over and over: disturbed ground grows birds. On this episode, host Nick Larson brings back Kyle Hedges and Frank Loncarich, two biologists who helped run one of the largest quail habitat studies in the region. From 2014 to 2018 they monitored 500 nests, radio-collared chicks, and even collared raccoons to see how predators move through cover. What came out of it is a genuinely hopeful finding: you can grow quail if you're deliberate about it. The number that anchors the conversation: 95% of their brood locations were in habitat that had been burned, grazed, or otherwise disturbed within the previous 12 months. Grassland managed with fire and cattle beat the old broken-up dairy-farm model on nest success, on survival, and on eggs per nest. The thick, idle CRP field that looks so birdy in January? The chicks can't get through it. Before the quail talk, Nick and the guys swap turkey-season stories and take on the old myth that turkeys are eating quail and grouse into decline. The short version: the timing doesn't add up, and it never did. It's a habitat problem wearing a predator's costume. Anugraha, which we translate oftentimes as mercy, literally means someone who grabs you and takes you in the right direction—brings you along, doesn't leave you behind. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu taught that Kṛṣṇa not only can become known, or that He reveals Himself through the process of bhakti, but He also takes us by the hand and brings us to our eternal position in the spiritual world. So, chanting is a communion with Kṛṣṇa, because He is non-different from His name. Therefore, when we're chanting Kṛṣṇa's names, we're worshiping Him by our tongue—āsyenedam upāsya (Śrī Nāmāṣṭaka verse 6), which means āsya means the mouth or the opening of the mouth, and āsyenedam is in the instrumental case, which means that we're using our mouth to upāsya, which means to worship Kṛṣṇa. By that process, Kṛṣṇa extends Himself to us, reveals Himself to us, and brings us along—anugraha. So, chanting is a very natural process, because if anyone has had any experience here in the material world and has at any time felt helpless, confused, or—I'm thinking of a third, anyone want to offer? Disturbed?—then there's a natural sense of calling out: "Please help me." So, we can take it that this is a very personal connection with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, by repeating His names and the mantra: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare / Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare refers to Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of God, and also His eternal consort, His female counterpart. The two go together, Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa; they're the perfect whole in two, and so everything's complete within the mantra. All perfection can be achieved by chanting the mantra, and here we are, in the middle of Silicon Valley, practicing the age-old process of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa so feel free to call out to Kṛṣṇa when you chant. "Please engage me in your service, and please save me from this ocean of material existence."
