Have you ever thought of building a business around travel? Andy Steves started his travel business in 2010, giving student tours to exchange students all around Europe. At first he was doing all the manual work himself (tours, guides, etc) but eventually learnt how to scale and grow his business. He currently lives in Medellin, Colombia. You'll love how inspiring his story is. We also chat about... Growing up with a travel lifestyle How he scaled his business His business and personal goals How do find off-the-beaten-path places as a tourist The emotional perspective of working and travelling. Enjoy this chat with Andy, and please subscribe to us in iTunes if you enjoyed it! Show notes and links from today's episode Rick Steve's Europe Instagram: Andy Steves Travels Website: Andy Steves Book: Andy Steves' Europe: City-Hopping on a Budget Key takeaways from our chat with Andy Steves 1 - Technology has changed the way we travel Andy has been working on his business for 8 years, and he's saying that in the past 2 or 3 years travel has evolved a lot. Now you can book a holiday from your phone, you can easily meet people online and Instagram influences the places we want to go. This is an interesting challenge for his business, that revolves around 3-4 day city trips for students in Europe. He tells us his goals are to turn his website in a type of marketplace, so he can easily adapt his city trips. 2 - Travelling is often cheaper than staying at home This has been repeated on other episodes - meaning that travelling really does not have to be expensive. Andy tells us how cheap it is for him to live in Medellin, Colombia, compared to Seattle. Rent, food and general cost of living is so much cheaper that Andy is not considering living in the US any time soon. He also mentions how important personal interactions are, and that talking to the locals and learning about their culture can go a very long way. 3 - Life is about the opportunities you choose It is true that it's a little strange seeing your friends and acquaintances achieve certain life milestones as you continue down your own path. Gwen explains how she wonders what her life would be like if she stayed in the military, J and her husband could have kept working for the Olympic Committee and gone to Rio, and Andy can see how everyone back home goes on with their own lives'. Although maybe a strange feeling, we all agree it's about the opportunity cost of every decision. At the end of the day it's best if you feel confident about the decisions you take, and accept that your life is about what you choose to do. Questions? Like or dislike? Leave us a comment! Have you ever wondered how real world experiences are crucial to success? This week I speak with Andy Steves who is the founder and "chief backpacker" of Weekend Student Adventures. So, Andy created WSA after graduating from Notre Dame in 2010 and has since led countless of tours, written several books including his most recent "Andy Steves' Europe: City-Hopping on a Budget" and continues to travel the world as a nomadic entrepreneur. I am so excited to share all of Andy's incredible knowledge in travel and how real world experiences are crucial to success. Andy Steves grew up following his dad Rick Steves on his travel related work trips, spending two to four weeks a year in Europe while his dad updated guidebooks, created TV shows, and led tours. Initially pursuing a college degree in Industrial Design, Andy decided to shift his career focus towards travel based on his experiences during a trip he took to Europe after graduating high school, and realizing there was a niche for shorter term city tours for students studying abroad and on a budget. Since launching Weekend Student Adventures in 2010, Andy has expanded the company to fit a variety of travel styles and tour lengths, and ensures quality experiences by visiting the city first to build optimal itineraries, and only hiring local guides. After growing to offer tours in fifteen cities across Europe, Andy has also released a Europe guidebook and has recently launched the Andy Steves Travel Podcast. On this episode we talk to Andy about what it was like to grow up following his dad around the world and how he changed course to start his own travel career. We also chatted about how he launched Weekend Student Adventures, plans the tour itinerary in each city, and how he slows down occasionally to have a day for himself to keep from getting bored of similar sights while traveling. Andy also shares his experiences on what it takes to be a good guide, the changes he's seen with time in the way people travel, and some of his ongoing and upcoming projects. Enjoy! Travel expert Andy Steves teaches us how to travel abroad affordably while having an authentic experience. Andy grew up traveling to Europe with his father, the travel guru, Rick Steves. He worked college summers as a tour guide for his dad’s company and saw a gap in the market while spending a semester studying abroad in Rome. In 2010 Andy set up his own travel company, Weekend Student Adventures Europe to take study abroad students on affordable intra-Europe three day weekends. For a lot of students, their semester abroad is the first time they have had to budget their money. Dealing with a new currency makes this even harder as does the “foreignness” of a new place. Young people perhaps outside the US for the first time might be too timid to venture off the well trodden tourist path and end up spending more money for a less authentic experience. By doing some research, which is half the fun of a trip for some of us, you can avoid the tourist traps and really experience a new place. When looking for a restaurant, don’t go to the place on the main strip with menus in every language. Walk a few streets over and find the place the locals go. The food will be better, cheaper, and the experience more memorable. The same applies to bars and clubs. Every city has an American ex-pat bar but why did you spend $1000 on airfare to spend the evening drinking with the same people you can drink with back home? We all have romantic dreams of Parisian cafes and Roman trattorias but we don’t all have the budget. There are so many beautiful places in Central and Eastern Europe that are much more affordable. You can have a three course dinner in Krakow for 5-6 Euros which is $8. You can spend an afternoon in a thermal spa in Budapest for 4 900 forints which is about $22. As Andy’s dad taught me, “Travel is a force for peace.” It makes you a better person and gives you the ability to make the world a better place.
