Steve Taylor: Water Services Authority Head of Operations on elevated levels of arsenic being discovered in the Waikato river

Elevated levels of arsenic have been detected in the Waikato River, affecting water supplies in Auckland and Waikato. The Government has been briefed this evening and sought assurances that water supplies are safe. Authorities are carrying out further testing with results due back tomorrow. Watercare is also rejigging the way it processes water to reduce the amount of arsenic in the city's water supply but said there was no immediate concern to public health. Steve Taylor, head of operations at Water Services Authority (WSA), told Newstalk ZB there had been increased levels of arsenic recorded in the Waikato River, affecting water supplies in Auckland and Hamilton. He said there was “naturally a level of arsenic” in the river, but it had been notified levels had increased recently. “I'm not sure what the reason for that increase is and that is affecting water supplies in Auckland and Hamilton,” he said. He explained the maximum acceptable value for arsenic is 0.01mg a litre – an “incredibly low amount” – but they had seen levels around 0.013mg, which is “marginally above the acceptable value for drinking water”. “The level of arsenic is above what we've described as a maximum acceptable value, but it's not at a level that we would suggest has a significant health effect. “There's no health risk in drinking that water,” Taylor said. “What we would expect is that those levels of arsenic would reduce over time.” Elevated readings of arsenic have been recorded in the Waikato River. Photo / Waikato District Council. Taylor said it is safe for people to keep drinking tap water. “The key thing about the maximum acceptable value for arsenic is it's designed for long-term exposure, so it's not an acute level. ”Unlike some other levels, you know, if you exceed that level, it has an immediate health effect – that's not the case with these levels.” Taylor said the WSA was only notified of the elevated levels on Wednesday and it had been “a very short-term situation”. ”We've contacted the [Waikato] regional council to try and understand what is the reason for this change in source water,” he said. Local Government Minister Simeon Brown has been briefed on the issue this evening. Photo / Mark Mitchell Local Government Minister Simeon Brown said he had been briefed on the issue by the WSA this evening. “I have asked the WSA to ensure that water suppliers in Auckland and Hamilton are taking appropriate steps, and that they communicate with their customers,” Brown said. “The WSA is the lead agency for this issue and will be providing regular updates.” Watercare reduces production at Waikato Water Treatment Plant The Herald repeatedly sought comment from Watercare this afternoon and it responded shortly before 8pm, saying it had reduced production at its Waikato Water Treatment Plant since detecting the elevated result. Watercare CEO Mark Bourne said the Waikato River supplies about 20% of Auckland's drinking water. ”We treat the water at our Waikato Water Treatment Plant in Tūākau and distribute it throughout the metropolitan network. ”In most parts of Auckland, treated water from the Waikato River is blended with treated water from our dams. However, Pukekohe, Buckland, Clarks Beach/Waiau Pā, Patumahoe, Glenbrook Beach, and Drury south receive water solely sourced from the Waikato River.” Bourne said Watercare had increased production at its major Ardmore plant, which treats water from four dams in the Hūnua Ranges. “This extends the processing time at the plant, and we expect it to improve our ability to reduce the level of arsenic in the treated drinking water. “We're working closely with other agencies and will continue to share information as we learn more.” The current minor exceedance of the standards does not present any immediate concern for public health, Watercare said. A Waikato District Council spokesperson said Watercare operates the local water networks in the area under contract. “Pōkeno and Tūākau are supplied by Watercare's Waikato Water Treatment Plant. There are also treatment plants that serve the townships of Huntly, Te Kauwhata, Meremere, Taupiri and Ngāruawāhia.” The spokesperson said samples from these plants were being tested, with results due tomorrow. Hamilton City Council's water supply remained safe for drinking, bathing, cleaning and cooking, following test results that showed small increases in the level of arsenic present. What is arsenic? The Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora website describes arsenic as a substance found in rock, which in some situations “harms your health”. It commonly enters the body in food and water and people can swallow small amounts every day for a long time without any obvious health effects. But swallowing larger amounts may cause long-term health effects, arsenic poisoning or death. Someone with arsenic poisoning may suffer from: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Extreme tiredness and bruising. An abnormal heartbeat. A “pins and needles” feeling in the hands and feet. Arsenic can not be removed from water by boiling it. Welcome to Breaking Down Boxes. We have compelling conversations with entrepreneurs in the packaging space. In this episode we talk with Bob Cohen, President, Acme Corrugated Box.Bob Cohen's family went from selling rags to selling used boxes to creating an innovative manufacturing company. With humility, Cohen shares his company's story of growth and how he and his wife chose to give back to the community that supported them. Spurred on by the tight market in the 1970s, Cohen went from being a distributor to a converter, starting with a used letterpress. Following his instincts, Cohen continued to grow the company and eventually brought his three sons into the family company. About BobMy name is Burton (Bob) R. Cohen, and I have been involved with my family business since 1969 after a short stint in the Army Reserves. I graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia and Penn State University, majoring in History (Bachelor of Arts). When I joined the company, we had five employees. We distributed corrugated packaging in the local market, and we generated annual revenues of about two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. In 1973, we purchased the first converting equipment, allowing us to produce corrugated packaging ourselves. Our start was primitive, but somehow, we survived in a market with better-equipped and more seasoned competitors. In 1980, the company moved from Philadelphia to the Bensalem area (a Philadelphia suburb). There, we occupied a 60,000 square feet facility, which allowed us to expand our manufacturing capability and add a larger workforce. We prospered there until the early 2000s and in 2001, we were given the opportunity to further integrate our manufacturing operation with the addition of corrugating capacity (2 Narrow Width Agnati Corrugators). This equipment acquisition necessitated our move to our present location in Hatboro. The new building has 234,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Looking around, we initially felt, “How will we ever fill this space!” We filled it a lot quicker than expected. We had seen steady growth since the major recession of 2009, essentially increasing the sales volume by 75% by 2016. We continued to add converting lines as our business grew. Between 2016 and 2019, we had increased sales by 57%. We also added four additional converting lines in that same timeframe prior to the Pandemic. As our volume increased, it became apparent that we needed far more space and more converting lines. With a focus on our clients and their growing demands, we investigated how an expansion could be executed while the economy was in the throes of the Pandemic. Believing there is no going backward in business, we took the plunge. The plans drawn up would make us the most progressive and best-equipped independent converter in the Northeast region. So, in November of 2020, we began construction. We added 80,000 square feet (with heights of 40'”& 60' to accommodate roll stock and the WIP system) and numerous new machinery including a 110” Fosber 1500 ft/min three stage corrugator, a Warak high rack WIP system developed in Europe, A Warak roll delivery system, full conveyorization of the entire facility (WSA & Ducker), a new waste and starch system, a dust collection system, the movement of entire departments within the facility and the addition of two new converting lines. The project was complete in April of 2023. At present, we employ 250 staff members, and presently our revenues are almost 2 times as great as our 2016 revenue had been. Our Management Team includes our General Manager, Jeremy Cohen, with 23 years of converting and industrial engineering experience, our Vice President of Finance, David Platt, 34+ years of corporate financial reporting responsibility, our Human Resources Manager- Heidi Morrison, 37+ years in Employee Relations, Operations Manager, Joseph Hodges, 26+ years of production...

Co-founders Keenan O'Hern and Adam Rack saw the need for breakthrough change in the packaging options available to the Willamette Valleys' world-renowned wine producers. Despite the sustainability efforts taking place in our local vineyards and wineries, packaging remains one of the least controllable and most emissions-heavy contributors to a wineries process. Their dedication to sustainability goes beyond just recycling glass bottles. Welcome to Episode 1616, in which Cynthia Chaplin interviews Umberto Valle of Poggio Trevvalle in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. The winery is awarded the Best Biodynamic Red Wine 2023 Trophy for Toscana Igt Sangiovese Vino Biologico Capocuore 2021 in Wine Without Walls, a section of 5StarWines – the Book wine selection in 2023 More about today's winery The Poggio Trevvalle agricultural company has its headquarters in Campagnatico, in an area in which the DOCG Morellino di Scansano and the DOC Montecucco intersect and overlap. The farm was purchased at the end of 1998 by the brothers Umberto and Bernardo Valle, who personally take care of the 13 hectares of vineyards on the property, located around the cellar. Sangiovese, a typical grape variety of the region, dominates the vineyard, while Merlot, Alicante and Cabernet Sauvignon are also grown in small plots. The idea that inspires all of Poggio Trevvalle's production is to produce natural wines, pleasant to drink even immediately, but, above all, which have their own unmistakable distinctive character, which makes them unique. To pursue this objective, the elements such as soil, flora and fauna must be absolutely natural, and it is for this reason that the Valle brothers immediately began organic production from the vineyard to the cellar. All the grapes produced, harvested at very advanced ripeness to attenuate the tannins, are destemmed and pressed within two hours of harvesting and undergo an initial fermentation in steel tanks at a controlled temperature, using only indigenous yeasts, while the malolactic fermentation takes place in tanks in concrete or in large wooden barrels for Sangiovese and Alicante, while for the other vines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon it takes place in steel or in small wooden barrels; only after this second fermentation are the different blends made. In the Italian wine scene, the wines produced by the Poggio Trevvalle winery stand out for their naturalness combined with great pleasantness and an absolutely interesting quality-price ratio. More about today's guest From the happy intuition that a good wine is "poetry" and to make it takes "art", Al-Cantàra was born in 2005. Since the beginning, the winery has established itself at a national and international level thanks to the high quality of its wines, recognized by several important awards and, last but not the least, by the amazing results achieved both at Vinitaly, where with seven wines reported in the 5 StarWines - The Book, Al-Cantàra has been the second most awarded winery in Sicily and the sixth in Italy, and at Decanter where, with a gold medal and two silver medals, Al-Cantàra has been the first winery of Etna for number of important awards. These results have been achieved thanks to the care with which all our workers manage the vineyards and to the professionalism of our winemaker, Salvatore Rizzuto, graduated in Alba and with experience in Bordeaux and Langhe. The sophisticated and modern packaging is another distinctive feature of the products Al-Cantàra, whose unmistakable labels are embellished by the suggestive representations of young Sicilian artists, among which lately Annachiara Di Pietro, that exalt the traditions, the culture and the Etna territory. Microsoft in 2022: the good, the bad, the meh Activision Blizzard. It's the gift that keeps on giving. I mean, Brazil OKed the deal. COME ON Microsoft Teams turned 5. Is it unstoppable? (Stack is asking for a friend) Games in Teams? Just one feature update per year? Just kidding! Microsoft released Windows 10 version 22H2 in October. Since then, we've seen the unexpected, largely (or completely) untested rollout of three new features: Search "pill," Task Manager access from the Taskbar, and now a new OneDrive. Each has inconsistently rolled out to different PCs. One has a regression. One was actually tested with the Insider Program. And one wasn't tested at all. Don't like Windows 11? Please, let the designers explain it One Outlook (Project Monarch) arrives, sort of, changes nothing Loop doesn't arrive, changes nothing .NET MAUI lands. Is it the future? Or just "a" future? Project Voltera looks cool, but Arm is still down the road DuckDuckGo colluded with Microsoft, then didn't Alex Kipman was just trying to be like Bill Gates! GitHub CoPilot: friend or foe? PC sales fell off a cliff. That cliff is about to get higher. Deeper. Whatever Joe B leaves. Like Mad Men, he might have stuck around too long The year the Insider Program broke - there is no way out of Dev, Beta, or WOA builds Windows 11 Microsoft brings Android 13 to WSA in preview Hardware Microsoft touts HoloLens 2 "momentum," says that an HL3 will need to be "meaningful" Lenovo is pre-gaming CES with major PC announcements. Isn't this how E3 started to fall apart? Google Android/Nest and Amazon both go live with early Matter implementations. Microsoft 365 Microsoft will let all EU cloud customers store their data locally. Microsoft teams with AWS, Meta, and TomTom to take on Google Maps Microsoft, Teams has failed with consumers. Just bring back Skype already In its second announcement all year, Skype adds real-time translation that imitates your voice Amazon settles EU antitrust case. Did it learn anything from Microsoft? Xbox Microsoft launches a massive sale on Xbox games Amazon expands in gaming, will publish next Tomb Raider title John Carmack leaves Meta, has a lot to say. Little of it good Ubisoft is giving Stadia customers the PC versions of the games they bought Tips & Picks Tip of the week: Make Mastodon less sleepy Apps of the year: Brave, Notion, ImageGlass, Modern Warfare II Term of the Week: Overwhelm Freeze Holiday cocktail pick of the season: Winter Warmer Mix equal parts apple whiskey and cranberry juice with a few good shakes of ginger bitters. Warm gently on the stovetop or in the microwave--to a little above room temperature, not hot like tea or coffee. Serve with a cinnamon stick or dried apple slice. You can make a batch for a party and keep it warm on the stove or in a crock-pot, just keep in on low or the alcohol will evaporate.
