A welcome, a century in the making, on the tarmac at Montreal's Trudeau International airport. Dozens of cultural objects belonging to First Nations, Inuit and Metis have arrived in Canada after being sent by the Vatican. The 62 items were among thousands of objects sent to Rome by missionaries in the 1920s. Now, they are one step closer to returning home. Also: In British Columbia, another mill has become a casualty of the U.S.-Canada trade war. Multiple mills have curtailed operations in recent months, hampering one of the province's key industries. You'll hear how the B.C. government is working to save its struggling forestry sector. And: It's old, rusty, and potentially hazardous. Residents of a small Newfoundland town say a derelict ship has been a blight on their waterfront for years. And they want it gone. Now the federal government is getting involved to remove it.Plus: Ukraine-Russia peace talks, increased security at German Christmas markets, B.C. trains hitting wildlife, and more
This is old enough that you've probably forgotten it. Tonight (December 5th) is Krampusnacht. Which means that it's the only time of the year when I'm justified in reseeding this show about Krampus, the terrifying German Christmas monster.
Christmas in Germany carries a depth and detail that shaped many of the world's most familiar holiday customs. From Advent wreaths glowing on winter evenings to the aroma of spiced markets and the gentle presence of Christkind, German Christmas traditions reflect centuries of Christian devotion, regional identity, and storytelling. Many of the images that Americans and other nations now consider "classic Christmas" took root in German homes long before crossing the Atlantic through immigrant families. For genealogists, these customs are especially revealing. The German-speaking world is not a single cultural block; it is a set of regions with their own rituals, dialects, and gift-bringers. Whether an ancestor came from Bavaria, the Rhineland, Saxony, or one of the historic kingdoms or principalities, their Christmas practices offer clues to where they lived, what they believed, and how they observed the Nativity. Germany's Christmas traditions did not emerge suddenly. They formed through centuries of Christian worship, household customs, artistic craft, and local practice. In this article, we explore these traditions with attention to the Nativity story, the gift-givers who visit German homes, the importance of Advent, and the genealogical hints preserved in these cultural details... “Step into the magic of the holiday season at the 7th Annual Lower Paxton Christkindlmarkt on Saturday, December 13th in Linglestown. It's the FIRST Smack-Dab Center of the Holidays episode, a town profile of Mifflinburg! The holiday episode is about...Mifflinburg? Yes! For a couple reasons, but the biggest one is the Mifflinburg Christkindl Market, the annual recreation of an authentic German Christmas market on Market Street. Crafts and goods (many handmade, many unique), indulgent foods and drinks for the young and adult, music, entertainment, and Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy (click on that link for a New York Times profile of Hilby) all in one place, a wonderful festival. We've also got a wonderful interview with Nikki Keister-Hornig, the proprietor of Gable House Bakery, where we wander surprisingly far afield (Hong Kong, Italy) but then bring things back home with Nikki's insights on cookies: it's hard to bake just three, so baking is so often a communal activity. She'll also tell you her secrets on how to bake great pastries with supermarket ingredients, and the best thing she's ever made at Gable House (BOURBON was involved!). I'll also tell you about a trip I took to Asheville, NC for the release of Sierra Nevada Celly Drippins, a brewery-only beer made from the "drippins" from the huge hop sacks they use to dry-hop Sierra Nevada Celebration. There's a short interview with Sierra Nevada's Brian Grossman (chief brewer at North Carolina, and son of founder Ken Grossman) about how Celly Drippins is made, and a report on my first visit to Buc-ee's, the famously gargantuan Texas-based "convenience store" chain. Hey, remember the scalloped oysters I told you about last episode? I made them for Thanksgiving, and had the leftovers for breakfast on Friday! Remember: today is Small Business Saturday, and there's a growing list of central Pennsylvania small shopping suggestions for you at the new website! That's SeenThroughAGlass.com! Once again, huge thanks to my daughter Nora Bryson for building the site, with a merch store, a blog, Corgi pix, and more to come. What I'm Drinking Today is hyperlocal. Boal City Brewing Cream Ale is a delightfully delicate but flavorful way to savor a beer that won't fill you up; perfect with your big holiday meals. The Smack Dab In The Centre segment is getting into the cold: where to find the best cup of hot chocolate in State College! I have notes about three American Whiskey Master Class signing events in central PA in December, including one next Sunday that's a fundraiser for one of our favorite local non-profits, the Penns Valley Conservation Association! You can get tickets for that one right here. Remember, a signed copy is a great holiday gift for your whiskey-loving friends that you can now buy at the new website! Next episode is another holiday episode, back on the regular Thursday schedule. Get ready! See you in two weeks...er, ten days! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports on a Christmas market attack in Germany that killed at least five people.
*) Israeli air strike levels Gaza home, killing 10, mostly children At least 10 Palestinians, including seven children, were killed and another eight wounded in an Israeli air strike on a home in northern Gaza as Tel Aviv's genocidal war on the besieged coastal enclave continues unabated. The Palestinian Civil Defense said in a statement that seven of the 10 victims killed in the Israeli attack on evening were children. A medical source in the al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza City said that the bodies of 10 people and eight others wounded were brought to the hospital after the Israeli airstrike on the home in the Jabalia Nazla neighbourhood. *) Israeli snipers 'authorised' to shoot civilians in Gaza — report According to a media report, Israeli soldiers have revealed that the army killed Palestinian civilians who entered previously targeted buildings in Gaza, The Haaretz newspaper in Israel said the army "does not routinely update its list of targets in Gaza, nor does it indicate to forces on the ground which structures are no longer being used" by fighters. "As a result, anyone – including noncombatants – who enters such a building risks being attacked," it said. A discharged officer from the 252nd Division said snipers were authorised to consider civilians entering specific areas as fighters and that they were killing civilians there who are then counted as ‘terrorists'. *) Car rams German Christmas market in suspected attack, killing two A car has ploughed into a busy outdoor Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, killing two people and wounding 50 in what authorities say was a suspected attack. The car driver was arrested. Regional government spokesperson Matthias Schuppe and city spokesperson Michael Reif said they suspected it was deliberate. Reif stated there were "numerous injured," though he did not provide an exact number. *) US House approves bill to avert looming government shutdown The US House of Representatives has voted to avert a government shutdown with just hours to spare, with Democrats joining Republicans to advance a funding bill keeping the lights on through mid-March. Lawmakers sent a package to the Senate that would keep federal agencies running through mid-March. Although the House is run by the Republicans, who introduced the bill, 34 of the party's backbenchers voted against it, while almost every Democrat was a yes. *) Ukrainian missile attack kills six in Russia's Kursk Six people, including one child, were killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on the town of Rylsk in Russia's Kursk region. Ten wounded people, including a 13-year-old, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Authorities said that those responsible for the attack would receive "well-deserved retribution".

War Room 2 Dead, 60 Injured in Car Attack at German Christmas Market — Meanwhile, US Govt. Shutdown Looms
At least two people were killed and more than 60 others injured when a car plowed into a busy Christmas market in Magdeburg, eastern Germany, in what appears to have been a deliberate attack. Authorities arrested the suspected driver, who they say is a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian man who first arrived in Germany in 2006. With just hours left before a potential midnight government shutdown, the House of Representatives passed this year's final funding plan to keep the government open. The bill has been sent to the Senate. This comes after previous attempts to pass similar proposals in the lower chamber had failed. The Biden administration has announced an additional $4.2 billion in student debt relief for nearly 55,000 public service workers. This is part of the “Public Service Loan Forgiveness” program, designed to erase loans after 10 years of service. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reshuffled his Cabinet amid intense turmoil in his political career. A party supporting his minority government has withdrawn its backing, announcing plans to trigger a new election in the coming months. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

In Germany, the Christmas Eve church service is the most attended service of the year. The nation is rich in Christmas traditions, many of which have roots in the Reformation. With long nights, foggy skies, and somber days, the softly falling snow adds a serene beauty that complements carols like Silent Night. These timeless songs beautifully highlight the true meaning of the season: Christ, the Light of the World, bringing hope to the darkness. https://www.gofundme.com/f/baptisten-eichstatt

German Christmas markets are incredibly special. This tradition is often replicated around the world. Former German teacher at Farnsworth Middle School and Guilderland High School, commonly known as “Frau Hickey,” spoke with Hudson Mohawk Magazine about her nostalgia of her homeland's markets and other German winter traditions. She spoke with Sina Basila Hickey and Mark Dunlea. creative commons photo by Daderot of a Market in Heidelberg.
Welcome Diana! This one is a little outside the mold for the Christmas Around the World series. You see, Diana's childhood, the culture she was raised in, and the Christmases she enjoyed weren't really defined by the places she lived, geographically. In fact, her family moved 22 times in 17 years. Rather, her experiences were mainly defined by the agricultural communities she and her family traveled between. Diana was raised in the Bruderhof, a global collection of self-sustaining farms where all members surrender their personal goods (yep, including Christmas presents) and accept roles for the greater good of the community. Although Diana ultimately chose to leave the Bruderhof community when she was 19, moving to NYC to work as a chef, she retains warm memories of some aspects of her rather unique childhood. Some of the best of these memories include Christmastime, which were full of German Christmas traditions like decorating simply with apples and candles, singing spiritual songs, and making classic bakes like these traditional British Mincemeat Pies she's shared with us. From the time Diana was in high school she spent increasingly more hours in the kitchen (which she truly loved, although it was very heard labor) preparing daily suppers for her communities of 400 people. Thrilled to welcome Diana to the Christmas Around the World series today - and thank YOU so much for being here. Highlights Vision of the Bruderhof: People who wanted to live together, share everything, wear flowers, and run through the fields. Why no members keep their jobs, titles, or possessions Why Diana lived in 5 countries but associates Christmas with Germany Bruderhof Christmas traditions: singing, simple gifts, communal nights, childlike, not gluttonous, simplicity Happy memories: Fairytale snowy Christmases outdoors in nature in Upstate New York Rations of 1 cup of sugar per person per month Making sugar snow candy!!! Why there was no Christmas cooking/baking at home Which Christmas traditions Diana kept from the Bruderhof, and how her journey out of Bruderhof is reflected in her changing Christmas traditions German Lebkukken: Gingerbread cookies as ornaments > food. On this post-election one we present our first ever disliked dish, because apparently there are no rules anymore. This was meant to be a revenge episode with Eli Beutel, but instead of raging against this German Christmas dish, stollen, they were the consummate food and alcohol historian—and still funny! We talk about the history of this dish, why they hate it, and why it's still important to share family recipes, even not so great ones. Plus flavor profiles as identity, accidentally becoming an expert in Hittite bee law, and a dip into tiki culture. Eli recommends their mentor Dawn Bohulano Mabalon's book Little Manila Is in the Heart: The Making of the Filipina/o American Community in Stockton, California If you're curious about stollen, Eli recommends trying it first before diving into making your own loaf. Here's a couple places you can purchase it: World Market Dresden Stollen Bakers (this year's batch is sold out but you can sign up for a reminder to buy next year's)
