As Dorothy and her friends set out for Oz to see the wizard, they were told to take a specific highway. It was called "The Yellow Brick Road". Like Dorothy, we are all on a journey trying to get to our "Oz". Fortunately, God has provided a highway to help us reach our destination. Listen in as we explore this most beautiful but often misunderstood highway that although is better than the yellow brick road and is available to all is sadly neglected and avoided by most.

Specifically, she dreams of writing something that will challenge people as much as Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin seems to have. But in 1850s Mesquite Springs, there are few opportunities for writers--until newspaperman Brandon Holloway arrives, that is.Brandon Holloway has seen the disastrous effects of challenging others and has no intention of repeating that mistake. Instead of following his dreams, he's committed to making a new--and completely uncontroversial--start in the Hill Country. As Dorothy's involvement in the fledgling newspaper grows from convenient to essential, the same change seems to be happening in Brandon's heart. But before romance can bloom, Dorothy and Brandon must work together to discover who's determined to divide the town and destroy Brandon's livelihood. With this second novel in the Mesquite Springs series, bestselling author Amanda Cabot invites you to discover the healing power of truth.About Amanda: From the time I was seven, I was convinced I should be a writer. The type of writing varied with the seasons. For a few months I fancied myself a playwright. Fortunately the teachers in my elementary school indulged me, and my class produced my two plays: "All About Thermometers" and "Hawaii." Neither, I am happy to report, made its way to Broadway. There was a brief time when I aspired to be a newspaper reporter, but that was soon eclipsed by my determination to be a novelist. All the while, though, I knew that writing was not the easiest way to earn a living, and so it was always going to be a second career. That's why I went to college and majored in French, fully intending to teach at the university level. When I graduated, I married my high school sweetheart and took a "temporary" job as a computer programmer. Although it hadn't been part of my plan, that turned into a permanent career in Information Technology.  Along the way, I've had a chance to do a lot of writing, including four technical books and what I describe as "enough technical articles to cure insomnia in a medium-sized city." (My budgets were also considered to be works of fiction.) Now, though, I'm able to write full time, and for the first time, all I'm writing is fiction. No doubt about it, I've been blessed. I had parents who nurtured my love of reading and have a husband who's not just my best friend but who's driven tens of thousands of miles to help me research books and who, after all these years, still hasn't lost his sense of humor, even when dinner is late because I have "just one more scene" to write.  Visit her website for more information.Liz Tolsma also has a new book about to release. Jesus said to His disciples, "I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.... You will be hated by all men because of my name."  We are living in the middle of that reality right now.  As Dorothy said to Toto, "I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."For much of my life, we Christians in America had an expectation that society would be hospitable to us, or at least apathetic.  But we are now seeing a rise in hostility toward Christian theology and values. But if we have been faithful students of the Word of God, we would know that that is exactly what we should expect from the world.  And if we are going to successfully navigate this new reality, we need to go into it with our eyes wide open.

“Once you’ve tasted significance, success will never be enough." ~ John C. Maxwell   That statement, made by leadership expert, John C. Maxwell, near the end of a transformational leadership mission trip to Guatemala, really had an impact on Dr. Dorothy Bonvillain. She’s been contemplating it ever since and is using it as the foundation for the work she does today.    Dorothy has lived one of the most interesting lives I’ve heard stories from. She’s been a military wife for 50 years, having traveled the world, raised her children, earned her PhD in Leadership & Educational Administration, and built a career that allows her to use her considerable gifts and strengths in a way that’s making a difference in the world.    Today’s conversation begins by touching on an article Dorothy wrote recently describing a particular challenge in today’s world, and especially for military spouses. What do you do when you are alone, because your spouse is on some extended deployment, you feel lonely and abandoned, and in the course of your work a member of the opposite sex finds you attractive and propositions you?    In her case, she was working in a shop as a salesperson and men were coming in to purchase gifts for their sweethearts (Valentine’s Day, perhaps?). As Dorothy was helping them make appropriate selections for wives and girlfriends, some of the men took an interest in Dorothy and attempted to seduce her.    Knowing what mattered most to her, Dorothy remained strong and resisted the temptation, but she understood that for many others, the temptation may be too strong, and some would fall. Today, she’s focused on helping military spouses define their core values, which is how one discerns what’s ok and not ok when faced with a choice. She works to help them discover their gifts and interests so they can find fulfilling work or build a business that allows them some sense of consistency and value when their lives are frequently unsettled through relocations and new assignments.    She’s asked herself: “What would I have wanted a Sr. Military person or wife to have told me when I was young and just starting this life?” And as she comes up with the answers to that question, she fills in the blanks and shares the wisdom with those who are now in the shoes she once wore.    Dorothy’s Bio Dr. Dorothy is a Certified Coach and Founder of Warrior Family Legacy Foundation (WFLF). The mission of WFLF is to Build Families and Create Legacy for military families through Personal Growth & Development, and to connect the philanthropic community to veteran and active-duty families for additional support.   Dr. Bonvillain earned her PhD in Leadership & Educational Administration at American University, Washington, DC. and has continued to invest in herself as a Coach, Author, Speaker, and Entrepreneur. With fifty years of service as the wife of an Army Ranger, Dr. Dorothy has a passion to serve as a ‘Voice of Wisdom’ for our global military community and people who love them.   Her mission is building stronger families and inspire them to go from ‘surviving to thriving.’ In her book, Loving Your Life: 7 Steps for Military Wives, Dorothy offers practical steps in seven key areas of life. Her children’s book, Wally Goes to School, introduces children (age 7-11) to leadership principles and the value of mentorship by parents, grandparents, and teachers.   Dorothy’s experience crosses a broad, global spectrum, in part: Television Producer/Host: Access Tucson TV: "Military Wives: Serving Those Who Serve" (2015), “Learning to Live on Purpose” (2013-2014). Presenter/Keynote Speaker: Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program, Intercultural Management Institute, American University, ‘Women in Business’ Cochise College, ‘Sisters & Brothers in Arms’, Ft. Huachuca, AZ Special Consultant to Minister of Education, Sultanate of Oman: Team Lead and sole American, International Research Team. Program Manager:  Embassy of Saudi Arabia & National Council on US- Arab Relations, Washington, DC. Trainer/Curriculum Developer: General Dynamics Information Technology, Cultural Awareness/Cultural Competence. Chief of Partnership: TRADOC Culture Center, ISC Consulting Group. High School Principal, Sierra Vista, Arizona.   Dr. Bonvillain’s published work includes: Loving Your Life: 7 Steps for Military Wives; Traditional Handicrafts of Oman; Wally Goes to School; and What’s in Your Wiggle, as well as articles in professional journals. How do you figure out what a trauma narrative is, how do you even know if what you went through was indeed trauma? What steps can you take to make sense of all the struggles you've endured throughout life, and how can they be traced back to that trauma you may have experienced? These types of questions are what our guest on the podcast helps you begin to figure out. Dorothy Pierre-Joseph talks about the movement she is starting, "The Trauma Tour", where you can come and experience a safe place of learning about trauma and how to not only tell your story but also embrace the progress you make as you begin to heal.As Dorothy Pierre-Joseph outlines on her website: Born to immigrant parents from Haiti, I can tell you from experience that life can be challenging. I was a product of a very abusive relationship and a victim of sexual abuse as a child. Much of my life was spent in anger and darkness. My decisions were heavily influenced by my brokenness. However, I always had a passion for learning and helping. I just did not realize that in order to fully help others I had to get healing myself. After a tumultuous period in my life, I attempted suicide and that was the turning point in my life.During our chat, Dorothy begins by sharing her background, which is in Psychiatric Nursing, and the circumstances that lead her to change her career direction from seeking to become a doctor, to become a nurse. We discuss what a trauma narrative is, and how when we begin to first tell our story, it's often from the perspective of being a victim because that's all we know. She shares how we learn to tell our story as we heal and not make the victim side of the story, the only side of the story. As Dorothy mentions, "Learning to Command Your Story, not Your Story Command You".She shares how as you begin to heal, not only does your story change but you change. You become more confident, more empowered, and able to release the shame of what you experienced...to not be bound by those experiences in life.We also discuss more about the Trauma Tour that she created, how to inform and educate your childeren about your struggles as you navigate your own healing while being a parent, and much more. When we read Dorothy Carvello‘s memoir Anything for a Hit: An A&R Woman’s Story of Surviving the Music Industry we were blown away. Dorothy had a life-long dream of working in the music industry and when the opportunity arose to work for Atlantic Records President Ahmet Ertegun, Dorothy jumped at the chance. Almost immediately she would discover this was no regular workplace. As Dorothy put it “If personnel had actually enforced the rules, everyone in the building would have been fired by lunch.” With Dorothy’s dream job came amazing highs and very low lows.  Sexual harassment and rampant drug use were all common daily occurrences and Dorothy battled constant misogyny with every step. Nevertheless she excelled, working her way up from Ahmet’s secretary to Atlantic Records first female A&R Executive. Dorothy loved going to live shows and the thrill of discovering and nurturing untapped talent but the constant abuse, both mental and physical from her male co-workers certainly took it’s toll. Dorothy would fight back and to this day continues to do so.  We recently had a riveting conversation with Dorothy about how she pushed past the societal expectations she was raised with and how she built her career in the music industry. We also discussed her very unique friendship with Ahmet and couldn’t help but ask about the beautiful man named Michael Hutchence who was a shining example of what a man could be among the toxic masculinity. We talk about how we need to continue to push forward with #TimesUp and #MeToo because the battle isn’t over but thankfully there are women like Dorothy who are putting these stories forward and fighting back. Prince Hamlet is a moody death-metal addict with a messed-up ghost on his case. The jealous monarch from The Winter’s Tale has become a tyrannical ruler in imperial China. And the 70’s musical The Wiz is … well … The Wiz. It’s hard to conceive of any scenario in which a presentation of ‘The Wiz’ – a variation on the Wizard of Oz set in a fantasy version of a New York ghetto – would be made to seem tame and safe, but safety is a matter of perspective. In what turns out to be Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s most daring and inventive summer season in years, the Allen Elizabethan Theater has now opened, presenting two supremely bold, thoroughly satisfying takes on William Shakespeare—and a perfectly pleasant production of The Wiz that, in any other year, might have actually felt like the risky choice. Helmed by first-time OSF director Robert O‘Hara, the delightfully revolutionary 1975 adaptation of Frank Baum’s fantasy novel has been given a respectfully energetic staging that may comes as a shock to anyone who thinks that the 1978 Michael Jackson-Diana Ross movie was actually The Wiz. The movie version changed the tone, cut crucial songs, and transformed the sweetness of the stage show into confusing, uncomfortable, weirdness. On a strikingly bare stage, a mostly African-American cast brings The Wiz to life, not with elaborate sets, but with brilliant costumes and over-sized, crystal clear performances. As Dorothy, Ashley D. Kelley is all kinds of adorable, and she leads an impressive cast of singers and actors who act first, sing second, and dance third, but fully capture the up-from-the-streets inspiration that is sewn into every beat of Charlie Smalls and William Brown’s groundbreaking show. Compared to the committed, goofy comfort of The Wiz, Lisa Peterson’s freaky, gleefully transgressive art-house horror show of a Hamlet is the equivalent of setting fire to elementary school. Which is to say, it’s brilliant, but possibly not what anyone expected. Danforth Comins’ angsty/angry prince carries an electric guitar, is haunted by the ghost of his dead father—who is seen running here and there past doorways and windows before suddenly appearing right next to his son. Hamlet is ominously “shadowed” by the ever-watching form of Neurosis guitarist Scott Kelly, accompanying the action on an array of instruments. The introduction Kelly’s Doom Metal music, intrinsically spring from feelings of anger and fear, is nothing short of ingenious, and the cast’s commitment the creepy beats of a classic horror story results in a Hamlet that is alternately thrilling, heartbreaking, and unforgettably disturbing. Standing somewhere in between those two shows is Desdemona Chiang’s surprisingly effective staging of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, an emotionally complex, endlessly surprising interpretation of the Bard’s silliest and saddest romantic fantasy. Almost post-modern in structure, the story begins in Sicilia – transformed here into China – where the jealous king Leonates — becomes convinced that his wife, the devoted queen Herminone has been unfaithful. The resulting series of misfortunes move the tale to Bohemia, here imagined as a kind of steampunk/Godspell version of the Old West, giving Shakespeare’s melancholy masterpiece a touch of Kung Fu. As Leonates abandoned daughter Perdita (Cindy Im, breathtakingly good) comes to adulthood in a foreign country, the patented forces of fate and Shakespearean soft-heartedness conspire to bring two broken families back together again. Rarely has The Winter’s Tale made so much emotional sense, transformed with skill and affection into a play overflowing with sweet, life-affirming beauty. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival runs February to October, in Ashland, Ore. For information on all currently running shows visit osfashland.org. I’m David Templeton Second Row Center, for KRCB
