In this part 2 to a short series, I explore the tension between clean, spicy, and explicit themes in Christian Romance novels. The episode emphasizes biblical principles to guide readers, cautioning against idolatry in romantic expectations, & suggests alternatives to Christian romances. Part 1- Navigating Christian Romance Novels: What's Acceptable? All Charles Martin book synopses- https://rebeccajwhitman.com/2021/12/01/the-power-of-the-written-word-charles-martin-books/ The Christian Lover is a book by Dr. Michael A.G. The book blurb says, "Each letter gives us a glimpse of what marriage should be: joyful companionship, deep passion, and unfailing commitment through the ups and downs of life." More here
Here is the question of the day: is it OK to read romances (like Harlequin & its ilk) if the sex isn't explicit? Are Christian romances a good substitute for secular romance genre reading? That question was posed to me from a long-time reader of this blog.I explore the complexities of Christian romance novels and the challenges of balancing faith with engaging narratives, avoiding sin and idols, and invite deeper contemplation. Have you ever wondered why guys with fish in their profile photos are such a catch in the online dating scene? Join me as we cast our net into the deep and sometimes murky waters of digital romance. With Veronica and a colorful crew of panelists, including two Johns, Jeremy, Robert, and Joshua, we'll navigate through the art of profile crafting, the strange lure of those fish photos, and the quest for genuine human connections in an era where swiping right is the new courtship dance. This isn't your typical heart-to-heart about love; it's a no-holds-barred conversation that fishes out the humor and absurdities in our modern quest for companionship. We're not just talking dating apps; we're taking a step back to reminisce about the days of community-focused matchmaking and how it compares to algorithmic encounters. In a world saturated with image-focused selections, we humorously toy with the idea of "Just Vespers," an app that's more about shared experiences than eternal promises. It's a session filled with laughs, a touch of nostalgia, and a candid look at how we present ourselves in the hopes of finding something real.Wrapping up our rendezvous, we delve into the realm of dating intentions and how the digital profiles we craft are akin to placing an ad for a good ol' used car - you never know what you're going to get. Whether we're searching for life partners within specific cultural niches, like Orthodoxy, or just scrolling for a good time, this episode peels back the layers of what we're all truly seeking behind those screens. So tighten your seatbelt and tune in for a joy ride through the ups and downs of finding love, Orthodoxy style, in the digital age!Found our YouTube channel yet? https://www.youtube.com/@cloudofwitnessesradioThank you for journeying w/ the Saints with us!

As a person who fell in love with books before she could read and created stories before she could write, Marie Hobbs is an avid reader. As a woman who is a hopeful romantic, she has read a lot of romance novels. As a Christian, she searched for stories with the same values as mine. As she grew older (and wiser), it became more difficult to find characters she could relate to and books that she could enjoy from cover to cover. She wanted to see herself, her friends, and her family reflected in the books she was reading. People of color who are thriving in their careers, growing in God, and approaching life with humor and grace – as the main characters. Since she couldn't find enough of the books she wanted to read, she started writing them. Blending real-life experiences, storylines conceived over the years, and creative license, the Unexpected Love Series was born – later-in-life inspirational romances with people of color as the main characters. The first two books in the series - Love Next Door (novella) and Better Than Good (novel) - were released in January 2023 and are available on Amazon. He thinks she's an elderly widow. She's convinced he's a grumpy old man. Neither could be further from the truth. After a short and difficult marriage, recently widowed Edith Sherman has learned her lesson. Forget love. Forget marriage. She plans to fill her thirties with adventure. As she awaits the final paperwork for a humanitarian trip to South Africa, she accepts a short-term nursing position in a small Midwestern town. The last thing she needs is a handsome local catching her eye. How inconvenient is that? Henry Hobbes isn't exactly thrilled to have Edith, who he assumes is an elderly widow, dumped on him as a houseguest for the summer. But he'd do almost anything for his niece, who is practically like a sister to him given how close they are in age. Especially since Edith will be working nights and Henry works most days. When he and Edith keep missing each other in person, they begin exchanging notes—short messages at first, then longer letters, sharing increasingly personal parts of their lives. By the time Henry realizes his mistake—that Edith is actually the brown-eyed beauty he keeps bumping into around town—their hearts are so intertwined he hopes they never unravel. But with her departure date rapidly approaching, and Henry's roots firmly planted at home, Edith must ultimately decide if the adventure of her dreams is the one right in front of her. Chantel of Chantel Reads All Day and Hey Reader runs an annual "Read Your Bookshelf Challenge." Simply put, she challenges you to read the unread (lonely, miserable, aching to come alive in your brain) books on your bookshelf. To do so, she gives you twelve prompts, one for each month, and basically says, "Have at it!" Okay, there are prizes, too, but... really, it's about reading those books. Well, this year I did it and had a BLAST. But more than helping me read the books I already owned, one particular prompt helped me find a new author and fabulous book. Listen in to see why you need to read The Space Between Words by Michele Phoenix (or reread it if you already knew the brilliance of this book! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How a Reading Challenge Helped Me Discover a Great Book Like I said in the episode, there are lots of reasons to join reading challenges or read-a-thons. Aside from the sheer fun of it, the comaraderie of the community of folks going, "Hey, that's a cool one! I chose xyz for "cozy or nostalgic," but now I need to read that, too" is a huge one. Okay, so maybe it's a TBR builder as well as reducer, but seriously! Two of my favorite reads this year I found because of Chantel's challenges/read-a-thons. The first was Emily of Deep Valley (to fulfill the Maud Hart Lovelace prompt with the You've Got Mail Read-a-Thon). Seriously, I LOVED that book and want to read more by her now (I previously didn't like the books of hers I'd read). And then there was The Space Between Words. I bought the book because I needed a white book. Seriously. That's why. Because "a mostly white cover" was the prompt, and I didn't have a book that was a mostly white cover. That's the reason. I am ready to gush all over again, but first... Challenges. I meant it when I said that challenges are great for helping you find new books and authors, but they're also wonderful for getting you out of reading slumps! And, for people like me, they're also great for helping me reduce the number of books in my home so I have room for more! EEEP! A few reading challenges for you for 2023 The first two I think I'll be doing, but there are many more! Scout around and see if one tickles your fancy! The ones I've listed are either ones I've personally considered OR are ones mentioned by BookTubers that I follow and watch. Read Your Bookshelf Challenge Angie Henderson BooksandLala Oceana GottaReadEmAll (This one is a Christian Romance challenge) And don't forget Avid Readers of Christian Fiction and many other Facebook Groups that have their own. And if you're new to BookTube, here are a few of my favorite channels! These are the ones I watch pretty much every video. And Read Another Chapter Chantel Reads All Day Mitzi Reads and Writes Miriam Elizabeth Reads BooksAndJams Grace Filled Reads Do leave a comment and let me know if I'm missing out on any great BookTubers! But the gush... You know I love a good book rich in story and faith. Well, The Space Between Words definitely has that. This book had a twist I should have seen coming, but it is so well-written and engrossing that I missed it and got blown out of the water. Fitting considering the plot. One of the best parts about this book is how it doesn't pretend that being a Christian and standing firm in your faith is easy. We weren't promised easy. Despite the easy yoke and light burden Jesus offers, this world is full of death, sorrow, sin, and decay. And it's hard. It hurts. The Space Between Words shows that pain for the ugliness that causes it and the beauty that God brings from it. If any book can beat out The Extraordinary Deaths of Mrs. Kip as my most-recommended book of the year, this will be the one. The Space Between Words by Michele Phoenix Award-winning author, Michèle Phoenix, weaves an unforgettable tale of hope and survival in The Space Between Words. “Several scenes in The Space Between Words will leave readers without words, the ability of speech replaced by the need to absorb all the feels.” —RT Book Reviews, 4½ stars, TOP PICK! “There were seconds, when I woke, when the world felt unshrouded. Then memory returned.” When Jessica regains consciousness in a French hospital on the day after the Paris attacks, all she can think of is fleeing the site of the horror she survived. But Patrick, the steadfast friend who hasn't left her side, urges her to reconsider her decision. Worn down by his loving insistence, she agrees to follow through with the trip they'd planned before the tragedy. “The pages found you,” Patrick whispered. “Now you need to figure out what they're trying to say.” During a stop at a country flea market, Jessica finds a faded document concealed in an antique. As new friends help her to translate the archaic French, they uncover the story of Adeline Baillard, a young woman who lived centuries before—her faith condemned, her life endangered, her community decimated by the Huguenot persecution. “I write for our descendants, for those who will not understand the cost of our survival.” Determined to learn the Baillard family's fate, Jessica retraces their flight from France to England, spurred on by a need she doesn't understand. Could this stranger who lived three hundred years before hold the key to Jessica's survival? “An unforgettable portrait of courage and reclaimed hope.” —Kristy Cambron, award-winning author of the Lost Castle series. For the last couple of months, I can't blink without seeing the name Juliette Duncan, so when I saw her as next on my list for interviews, I was excited! And boy was chatting with her a delight. Juliette has TWO books releasing back to back almost, but the first one, Christmas at Goddard Downs releases... TODAY! So, listen in to learn more about her Christmas novella and a bit about the next book in her Waters Edge series. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What's Better Than a Great Christmas Romance Novella? So Much! How about "mature romance"? Oh, how I love that rather than "seasoned" as if everything else is somehow bland OR... it's on the verge of "spicy." EEEP! Juliette Duncan, however, has created a wonderful cast of Characters in her Sunburned Land series taking place in northern Australia and on a cattle station, no less. We talked about formulaic romance, the lack of it, and what makes for good, realistic fiction. I wanted to throw out here that when she talks about her books not being "squeaky clean," I believe she's talking about how the people are flawed rather than perfect and they make stupid mistakes like humans do rather than the books being full of things that would get them an R rating as a movie! I think it's just the Aussie/USA terminology difference--kind of like Merry Christmas vs. Happy Christmas which we ended with. But we also talked about her Water's Edge series! Book five is coming out in just a few weeks, and it sounds delightful. I'm a sucker for a friends-to-more romance, and well... this is one! YAY! Think small-town romance, hang gliding, and the Australia coast. What more could you want? When I asked about what she likes to read, she admitted she does read in her own genre, and likes women's fiction by Aussie author, Lilly Mirren. I've never heard of Mirren, but since Juliette says she writes a clean book, I'm eager to give it a shot! Furthermore, Juliette Duncan's books can be listened to on audiobooks wherever you like to get yours--including from her WEBSITE. Christmas at Goddard Downs by Juliette Duncan A Christmas celebration, an engagement in doubt… Maggie and Frank are excited to welcome the entire family home for Christmas. It's been too long since they were all together, and since Frank's heart attack, they cherish each moment spent with their family. Plus, there could be two engagement announcements! Janella's bringing Wade to Christmas, and everybody's expecting Sean to finally pop the question to Elizabeth. The whole cattle station's buzzing with anticipation. But Sean still has niggling doubts. Since Uncle Frank appointed him as co-manager of Goddard Downs, his life has changed for the better, and at last he feels like somebody, and yet, he can't shrug off his father's words. Although he loves Elizabeth, how can he expect her to marry him when his dad could be right and he could fall into his old ways at any time? Elizabeth Martin's had enough of waiting for Sean to propose, and Bree's offer to travel the world and nurse wherever the Lord leads holds appeal. But can she leave Sean? The thought distresses her. But does she love him enough to wait forever for him to propose? What if he never does? How can she join his family for Christmas when all eyes will be on them? It'd be easier not to go. She'll pick up another shift, make her excuses. Somebody needs to care for the sick while everyone else celebrates the birth of Jesus. Can this impasse be broken? Can Sean find the courage to face his fears and commit to Elizabeth before he loses her? Will Elizabeth choose to travel the world, or will this Christmas be one that will change her life forever? Join the Goddard family for a Christmas to remember. Christmas at Goddard Downs is Book Six in the Sunburned Land Series, a contemporary Christian romance set in the beautiful, rugged and remote Kimberley area of northern Australia. Grab your copy now and be blessed. Like to listen on the go? You can find Because Fiction Podcast at: Apple Castbox Google Play Libsyn RSS Spotify Stitcher Amazon and more!

A few months ago, one of my readers emailed me about a friend who had a book coming out soon and that led to learning all about Elizabeth Marie and her new series, the "Love Series," beginning with Love Under Investigation. Listen in and see what prompted an ex-atheist to take up writing romance! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Who Doesn't Love an "Enemies to Love" Romance with Salvation Mixed In? Elizabeth Marie's debut novel, Love Under Investigation promises to be a great story. With an unsaved, rebel heroine and a guy who just wants to lead her to Christ, this story leads us on a merry ride as the characters try to prove that murder is afoot. We also chatted about her first book, The Terrible and Great Year of Molly Evans (written under Karen Heslop and wow! Gorgeous cover!). This is a redemptive novel that fictionalizes Karen's own faith journey and deals with some really hard topics (including rape). Still, even with my own personal struggles reading those topics, I'm going to give it a go because I love her writing style and think this book has a lot to offer. Elizabeth Marie assures us that we can just skip over a page or so to get past tougher situations. But I really loved what she had to say about why she chose to write Christian romance--deal with serious topics, sure, but in the end, have an uplifting, positive experience as a reader. I get that. I totally get that. Stay tuned for her multiple spin-offs and her upcoming "reluctant billionaire" Love Under Investigation by Elizabeth Marie Sara Ward is running from her past but ends up working with the last person she wanted to see, Ezekiel Cane. He's a cruel reminder of the past she ran away from to New York and a mockery of how little she has accomplished. Ezekiel Cane has published numerous successful articles as an independent investigative journalist and isn't ashamed to credit God with leading him to the right sources for each investigation. This time, however, he can't help but question God's sense of humor when the only person who can truly help him is the person who hates him the most: Sara Ward. Yet even when faced with her scathing hatred, he wonders if he can get through to her and lead her to Christ. If a complicated history between the two wasn't enough, the task ahead will be no easy feat. How can they prove that one of the largest corporations in the country is hiding its own CEO's murder? You won't want to miss this edge-of-your-seat ride. You can learn more about Elizabeth Marie and her books by visiting her WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? In today's episode, Christian Romance author, Amy Anguish and I talk about her latest release, the first book in her Road Trip Romance series... Destination Romance. Learn about the three friends who make up this series, the fun stories for each, and what kind of road trip they all go on. You'll love the fun Anguish has for us (doesn't that sound fun? I love her name!) Listen in for more! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Ready for a Fun, Funky, Romance-Filled Road Trip This Summer? I had a delightful chat with Amy about her fun new series, and I was determined to read them all the moment they released. I mean, come on. A "girls only" road trip for a bachelorette party ends up picking up tagalongs and everything goes wonky. We even got a small bit of information about the upcoming books as well. But then Amy Anguish lived up to her name... She mentioned another book... an epistolary novel. I had to read Writing Home. I just had to. If you wanted a recipe for a perfect romance, it would include a slow-burn, a friends-to-more element, and deep, rich faith woven into every moment without becoming preachy. And Amy R. Anguish did it. Beautifully. One of the best parts was that even what should have felt "obvious" didn't. We know who would do what and how or why in certain places... but we still hold our breaths until it happens, not completely certain. Lovely. This new-to-me author just landed herself on my insta-buy list with great characters, fun dialogue, and just a host of fun scenarios tied together with the best get-to-know-you letters. I went into this book knowing I'd like it. I just had no idea that I'd love it as much as I do. Onto the next! And yes... I'm going to binge all the books. Destination Romance by Amy Anguish It's not every day you bring a boyfriend back as a souvenir. Katie Wilhite is ready to settle into her new job as a librarian now that college is through, but friends Bree and Skye want one more girls' trip, and when Bree insists this is her bachelorette fling, Katie agrees. What she didn't agree to was allowing fun and flighty Skye to dictate the itinerary or for her anxiety to kick in harder than ever … right in front of a cute guy. Camden Malone had no idea when he agreed to be the voice of reason on his cousin Ryan's vacation that the trip wouldn't stay in New Orleans as planned. But when Ryan plots with Skye so that the guys can tag along with the girls all week, he isn't nearly as upset as he should be. Not with Katie's fiery temper and flashing eyes intriguing him more by the minute. Can Katie relax enough to trust Camden and a possible future, or will she continue to push him away as only a vacation fling? And can Camden move past a rocky history of his own to be able to jump into a better future? For a trip that was supposed to be all about fun, there's a lot of romance going around. Sunrise Publishing's newest collection just released, and I'm crazy excited about Carrie Padgett's One Fine Day. This book and the others in this series take place in Rachel Hauck's Heart's Bend. Learn about her characters' backstories, how I cracked up in the opening scene, and what we might expect from the rest of the series, too! Listen in for all the details and see why One Fine Day might need to make an appearance at the top of your TBR list. Note: links may be affiliate links which provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Get Ready for a Great Start to a Wonderful New Series with Sunrise When I opened the first chapter of One Fine Day by Carrie Padgett, I had no idea what to expect, really. I'd never read the books Rachel Hauck wrote that inspired this series, so I went in... blind. Well, on the first page, I cracked up. Genius work with a bit of backstory that didn't feel like an info dump combined with natural humor, and I was hooked. In more ways than one, this is a second-chance romance that I can't wait to read... or to listen to. I still can't decide if I want to read it or snag the audiobook. What thinkest all? Carrie and I had a great time chatting, and even the books she mentioned told me that I would probably continue to love everything about this book. Besides, who couldn't love a book set in a place called "Hearts Bend"? One Fine Day by Carrie Padgett "A heart-warming romance, One Fine Day is a great way to spend a day and tease your sweet tooth. Now I need to head to my local bakery!" T. I. Lowe, bestselling author of Under the Magnolias All she wants is a fresh start... Now, Chloe just wants to move forward…but when her mom's health is in jeopardy, Chloe heads right back to Hearts Bend where she's hired as head baker for Haven's, the premier bakery in town. She has no idea that moving home will push her right into the arms of the man who broke her heart. He's not looking to fall in love... Tennessee Titans quarterback Sam Hardy has too many broken memories in Hearts Bend to Return. But when he's sidelined by an injury, he desperately needs to invest in something to safeguard his future. Haven's Bakery is up for sale—and his business partner believes the deal is too good to pass up. He has no idea that the owners have hired the one girl he can't seem to forget…and the last thing he expects is to be her boss. But it's a recipe for romance… Back in Hearts Bend for the first time in ten years and thrown together at Haven's Bakery, Chloe and Sam have a second chance at first love. MOVIE DISCUSSION: Before Dune, Daniel saw a trailer for Redeeming Love. After the trailer played, he leaned over to his friend and said, "I think that's supposed to be a sexy Christian movie.". So, here we are talking about that "sexy Christian movie". Boy, there sure is a lot to talk about here. Topics: Melvin compares Redeeming Love to an awkward interaction he witnessed at work. Redeeming Love contains some rather extreme and transgressive content despite having a serious lack of context. Daniel details some background for Redeeming Love, author/screenwriter Francine Rivers, and director D.J. Caruso. Redeeming Love is loosely based on the Minor Prophet book Hosea from the Bible. Each character feels devoid of personality which may work in both a shorter and more artistic film than Redeeming Love ends up being. Where Redeeming Love works is where it leans heavily into its "inspiration", but even then, that's not success from talent, that's success from... copying Scripture. Discussing the comparatively excessive conveniently censored nudity in Redeeming Love. Additionally, discussing all the other crazy content that borders on "Christian misery porn." As we continue our discussion, the 2+hour runtime of the film continues to be a recurring issue. At least the sets and outfits are fun! Questioning why the film didn't display the complicated dynamics of sexuality (gentle self-sacrifice vs aggressive selfishness) in a way that can be both edifying to its performers and beneficial to the narrative structure. One glaring issue throughout the film is each character's severe lack of agency. Observations from other reviews and responses to Redeeming Love. Is this a Christian exploitation film in the traditional sense of an exploitation film? Have you ever considered your philosophy of romance? Christopher Marlowe's, "The Shepherd To His Love" captures the optimism of a romantic with beautiful poesy. And Sir Walter Raleigh has a pessimistic reply in his subsequent work, "The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd." But wisdom is neither naive or pessimistic. Christianity has a profound and beautiful romance story at the heart of its message. God created human beings to reflect himself, and the love between spouses and between parents and children both reflect unique aspects of God's love. Romance is at the core of what it means to be human, and is therefore dangerous and beautiful. A Christian philosophy of romance is needed, and introduced.LinksVisit our website: https://www.wellreadchristian.comCheck our our blog: https://www.wellreadchristian.com/blogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/wellreadchristianInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/wellreadchristianYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfGxz4OH1-hVD0fL9AWR4Xg
As Blowing Rock, NC's JOY Radio talk show host, Everly has discovered fulfillment, but she hasn't found love, at least not for her—not even from her mother. Everly Johnson is every man's dream of the perfect date, even though her audience has never met her. As host for the EnJOYing God's Best program on JOY Radio in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, she receives countless gifts of flowers and candy from her listeners, some callers being more ardent than others. Everly has no interest in such offerings and promptly bestows the bounty on her mother's assisted living facility. Everly wants words--heartfelt, meaningful endearments meant for her ears only. She wants a man who will open her eyes to everything she cannot see to make her feel like she's more than just a voice behind the microphone. Cameron Boyd is every woman's dream of the perfect man. He's intelligent, has a strong work ethic and career, lives on his own, and is downright adorable. But being an introvert can make eye contact with a pretty girl a challenge, let alone saying something coherent--unless it is the one-way conversation he has each Friday with Everly Johnson. Date night for Cam involves sitting alone on his back porch overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains while he dreams of things to say if he were ever to meet her face-to-face. A chance meeting changes everything. Will Cam be able to step out of his comfort zone and into the world he has only been able to envision in his mind? Will Everly trust this stranger with her life as well as her heart? Tune into JOY Radio to find out! Mick gets a nice little Terry Pratchet-lite, and Sue is stuck on the worst tip: The Christian Romance tip where no one likes each other.
If her books aren't entertaining enough, just a chat with Becky Wade will keep you on your intellectual toes as you navigate tough topics and realistic romance–all while chuckling, no less. Becky Wade's latest book, Let It Be Me, will have you cracking up from the first page. Great and realistic sibling relationships, puzzling DNA results, a mystery she's not sure she wants to solve, and a relationship she's not sure she's capable of investing in. WHAT ISN'T TO LOVE? Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How Many Awesome Authors Have I Been Missing Out On? Too many I assure you, but I'm not missing out on another one of Becky Wade's books. This popular Christian romance author won the Christy Book of the Year award (and has the cool story to prove it!). I've heard of the amazingness of Becky's books since my first days at Avid Readers of Christian Fiction on Facebook. Since then, a week–often even just a day–doesn't go by without someone saying, “Oh… read…” So when I got word that I would be interviewing Becky, I pulled out her latest book and got to reading. Two sentences people. TWO SENTENCES. She's a genius with those two sentences. (And if you want to know why this is brilliant, listen to the episode. Those opening sentences MATTER). The Misty River Romance series has a killer premise with a fascinating inspiration. Remember those kids trapped in that cave in Thailand a few years back? Yeah. Find out how they inspired this series and the AMAZING backstory it has. Hint: you'll want to read book one. Just sayin'. One of the things I loved most about our conversation was when she talked about how she puts the “hard stuff” in her books. PTSD, addiction, dysfunctional families… you name it, she's got it (or will by the time we're done tormenting her over a hot keyboard!). About Let It Be Me The one woman he wants is the one he cannot have. Former foster kid Sebastian Grant has leveraged his intelligence and hard work to become a pediatric heart surgeon. But not even his career success can erase the void he's tried so hard to fill. Then he meets high school teacher Leah Montgomery and his fast-spinning world comes to a sudden stop. He falls hard, only to make a devastating discovery–Leah is the woman his best friend set his heart on months before. Leah's a math prodigy who's only ever had one big dream–to earn her PhD. Raising her little brother put that dream on hold. Now that her brother will soon be college bound, she's not going to let anything stand in her way. Especially romance . . . which is far less dependable than algebra. When Leah receives surprising results from the DNA test she submitted to a genealogy site, she solicits Sebastian's help. Together, they comb through hospital records to uncover the secrets of her history. The more powerfully they're drawn to each other, the more strongly Sebastian must resist, and the more Leah must admit that some things in life–like love–can't be explained with numbers. Theological Episode In this episode I explain some of the backstory behind Eschatology or the views on the end times in the church. I break down in general who holds to which view.
