"The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Please welcome Bristol Broadcasting legend, new talent champion and curator of the "Upload Festival" Adam Crowther to The Good Listening To Podcast: The Story Behind Your Story Show! Adam Crowther presents BBC Upload 7-10pm every weekday on BBC Radio Bristol - which he's presented since October 2018.He has worked as a broadcaster and presenter across live events and radio as well as live streams and videos for BBC iPlayer. Adam has spent most of his presenting career championing, encouraging and celebrating new talent - from musicians to writers, comedians and bloggers, Adam loves celebrating talent.Adam is also an award winning social media expert. He's managed social media brand accounts for the BBC (BBC Radio Bristol, BBC Breakfast and BBC Introducing in Shropshire) as well as a children's charity in Birmingham. Adam has also created content for BBC Two and BBC masterbrand instagram accounts, covering premiers of Peaky Blinders and Blue Planet II.“ Today you are youThat is truer than trueThere is no one alive Who is you-er than you.” The one and only Adam Crowther is inspired by these simple words from Dr Seuss. The choice reveals a lot about the broadcaster and his 24 carat authenticity. He appreciates honesty, expressed in accessible language. He is not 'hoity-toity' and has never wanted to be either. OK, he was cheeky in school. Yes, he sang in a band. And yes at 16, he was chosen to show the Prime Minister - Tony Blair! - around his school. On request, he even made the PM a cup of tea, under strict security supervision. After university in Aberystwyth, where he studied Drama, Adam became a Youth Worker and grew into becoming a pioneer broadcaster with BBC Bristol via BRMB In Birmingham. And this, despite underselling himself relentlessly at his first interview. Adam learned his lesson quickly and by way of reference, quotes Ray Charles's mother in the biopic: “ I tell you once. I help you if you get it wrong. After that, you're on your own.“ Adam was allowed that second chance and made the most of it. He pioneered a new take on Social Media strategy and execution for the BBC. He co-created Upload. Over time he has become less shy about banging his own drum - without becoming a secret narcissist. He readily acknowledges the benign influences of his parents, teachers and professional role models. Adam replaced his self-doubt/can't-do stance with a more positive 'can-do' model. He is still only 30 something, now confident enough to be who he is - never happier than when helping others to thrive and shine. To discover their own voices! Adam confesses he is a perfectionist. He appreciates originality and has no time for the ‘near enough is good enough' approach. He knows he has been very lucky and now wants to help create similar luck for others. Adam recently identified himself as bisexual. It is a simple matter of fact. He knows he is a consummate professional, not a drama queen. This lively conversation will convince you of that, right from the start.
Actor, comedian and Author Ben Miller discusses the colourful, complicated and uncompromising life of William Hazlitt. Born in 1778 William Hazlitt is considered one of the greatest critics and essayists in the history of the English language, but for centuries, his life and works were lost in the shadows. He was an advocate of universal rights and civil liberties, and a fierce opponent of pomp and power. He railed against slavery, believed strongly in the power of the imagination, and said, 'The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves'. But he wasn't without his own demons and fell out of public favour. Rumours of gambling, sex addiction and adultery challenged his reputation. In recent years scholars have debated his life and works and a renewed interest in his essays has emerged. Ben Miller plays Lord Featherington in Bridgerton, and he wrote and starred in The Armstrong and Miller Show on Channel Four. With expert contributions from Dr Uttara Nataragen, a founding organiser of The Hazlitt Society and editor of The Hazlitt Review. Presented by Matthew Parris Produced by Nicola Humphries for BBC Bristol
This weeks Kicking Back Podcast features Charlie Sinclair, lead singer from Sylvette. Inspired by art in all its forms, Sylvette draw from the elements and traditions of many different genres and synthesise a unique experience. On one hand it's natural, earthy, and ritualistic and on the other futuristic, celestial and even glamourous. Their sound is overall bold and new but most importantly, at its heart, emotionally raw and vulnerable. During their 5 years as a band they have released 2 albums, completed 3 UK tours, had support from BBC introducing, BBC 6, CLASH Magazine, Q magazine, fresh on the net and had live sessions at BBC Bristol and BBC Kent. In 2019 they appeared on the festival circuit playing Dot to Dot and Kendal Calling festival. We go in depth into their creative process, writing and new music for this year! Produced by RecRooms, The Kicking Back Podcast is an audio and video podcast hosted by video producer and musician Brad Ingham and co-hosted by guitarist and musician Matthew Campbell. It discusses Arts, Music and many other topics with a different Artist/ Creative in each episode.
Jessica Mitford was the fifth born of the notorious Mitford Sisters. Born into the aristocracy, as a child she had her own language, collected a running-away fund and fought to set herself apart from her fascist siblings. As an adult she was in turn a communist rebel, an investigative journalist, a civil rights activist and pop singer - opening a gig for Cyndi Lauper and recording an unlikely duet with her friend and fellow mischief maker Maya Angelou. She’s championed by Robert Rinder, the criminal barrister and television personality known to many from the reality courtroom series ‘Judge Rinder’ and more recently, ‘My Family, The Holocaust and Me’ who reveals the impact her story has had on his own life. Robert Rinder is joined by guest expert Laura Thompson, author of the New York Times best seller, 'The Six: The Lives of the Mitford Sisters'. Presented by Matthew Parris Produced By Nicola Humphries for BBC Bristol

In the spring of 2016, TV Cream sat down with Johnny Ball to talk about his 50-year career in show business. We're making the podcast available again today in the hope it might provide some cheer. In this one-off, Johnny Ball really does reveal all. Such as... How Bob Monkhouse took umbrage when he thought Johnny was stealing his gags; how Johnny's big break on The Val Doonican Show went spectacularly wrong; why he originally balked at the idea of presenting Play School; how a dreadful experience on Yorkshire TV spawned the creation of Think of a Number; the reason why the scene dock doors in BBC Bristol have a chunk cut out of them; why Play Away became a more lucrative writing gig than anything the LE department had to offer; Johnny's ill-fated sojourn to Central Television; and - and! - what went wrong on The Terry & Gaby show!

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be invited to ‘curate the BBC’s Tweet of the Week’ archive. This meant I was given the chance to introduce the Tweet of the Day (daily birdsong) on BBC Radio 4 for two weeks. This was an incredible opportunity and I’d like to say a big thank you to Andrew Dawes, the Tweet of the Week producer, who invited me. This episode is a little behind the scenes glance at my day at BBC Radio Bristol. I managed to record a conversation with Andrew, a seasoned natural history producer, as well as with Emily Knight (@EmilyPKnight) and Becky Ripley (@Becky_Ripley), the presenters of the amazing Blue Planet II podcast. The Blue Planet II podcast is incredibly informative and fun and well worth having a listen to. You can hear the podcasts of my Tweet of the Week here (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p068w3tf) and here (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p069jt4n) on the BBC website.
