Do Birds Become Dependent on Bird Feeders?

You may have heard that feeding birds makes them dependent on humans for food, but it's just not true. Even if you see your local birds ravenously eating at your feeder, those same birds are also finding wild sources of food from elsewhere at other times of the day. That being said, a humble bird feeder during a winter cold snap could really help out our feathered friends during a tough time.BirdNote is supported by American Bird Conservancy, dedicated to conserving wild birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Chris Baines is one of the UK's leading independent environmentalists and an award-winning writer and broadcaster.A trained horticulturist and landscape architect, he spent some years practising and teaching landscape design but has spent most of his career a professional adviser to Government and other bodies including the National Trust, National Grid and energy regulator Ofgem.Fornerly a presenter of BBC Countryfile, his 1986 film Blue Tits and Bumblebees is often credited with starting the trend towards gardening with nature.Back in 1979 Baines bucked the trend in a chemical-driven gardening decade and created a "rich habitat garden" for Gardeners World. "At that stage, I just remember vividly...Peter [Seabrook] looking at me and saying..'you really think Britain's gardeners are going to be interested in that?' It was a supreme put down, really. And then they were absolutely avalanched with requests for the leaflet that I'd produced about how to create a rich habitat garden."With his best-selling book How to Make a Wildlife Garden continuously in print for almost 40 years, a new expanded edition was published in 2023 as an RHS classic, he reflects on where nature gardening and rewilding is today. His new book RHS Companion to Wildlife Gardening updated edition is out now. With Biodiversity Net Gain now in legislation, Baines shares his concerns: "If the outcome of the new legislation is that more creative partnership with the Wildlife Trust and others managing the investment that's required from the developers, that would be brilliant...If it finishes up with just little patches of trees planted on, in many cases, landscape, which is rather more valuable without its trees for wildlife than it will be with trees on it, then that will be a wasted opportunity. But I'm eternally optimistic."He discusses the pros and cons of bird feeding and the prospects for and importance of local parks in this election year."It's wonderful to have national parks out in the countryside, but actually most people most of the time need access to green space right where they live and work. And we need to take that much more seriously because neglect and lack of safety in those spaces puts people off going there." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Its safe to say that many of our gardens are a little damp at the moment with a run of many wet months here in Ireland. When its like that the garden may not seem like an enticing place however there is still lots to be done and work done now will really set your garden up for success next spring and summer.  Ever wondered how to guard your bird feeders from predators or attract a variety of birds with diverse food? Stick with us as we spill the secrets and share the importance of a water source for these feathered visitors. Other crucial November tasks we'll be covering include bulb planting, leaf mould creation and the art of taking hardwood cuttings. We'll also share how to prepare for the coming year with new beds and plantings. So, don't let the soggy season keep you away from your garden, join us and discover the joy of November gardening! The main November gardening Jobs to outline are Mulch & feed your soil. Mulching your beds and borders will feed the soil and ensure it is healthy and full of life for next spring. It protects the soil from leaching nutrients. It also locks in carbon, reduces compaction over the winter, prevents weeds and much more so it really is worth the effort. You can mulch with mature compost, well rotted farm yard manure, leaf mould etc. Create No dig beds! from November to the end of February is the perfect time to create no dig beds. Simply cover the ground with brown cardboard (removing all tapes, plastic etc) and altering 15cm/6" of compost on top and leave. These beds will be fully workable straight away so a really fast and easy way to create new beds. Take hardwood cutting. Late Autumn & Winter are perfect for taking hardwood cuttings many plants can be propagated this way including roses, hydrangeas, buddlejas, viburnum and many more. Take cuttings approx 9"to12" long cut below a leaf node and stick into a well drained soil or in a pot by late next spring rooted will have formed and you will have a new plant. Plant Tulips November is the best month to plant Tulips whether in containers or open ground planting in November gives the best results from this spring favourites. With all the leaves that are falling it is a perfect opportunity to make garden gold in the form of leaf mould. To make just gather leaves in a plastic bag fill seal and pierce some holes in it and leave it for 9-12 months then reveal some of the best growing media that you can use for your plants. Plant bareroot and rootballed trees, hedging plants, fruit trees and fruit bushes. From November to March is bareroot season and it is the perfect time to get planting bareroots. Plant over wintering onions and garlic for early harvest next spring. Set up a wild bird feeding station and enjoy hours of pleasure from watching our feathered friends. Remember to set up in areas where the birds feel safe from predators, provide multiple sources of food to attract diverse species of bird and provide water in the area also. If there is any topic you would like covered in future episodes, please let me know. Dr. Emma Greig is a behavioral ecologist who has been leading Project FeederWatch, a multi-decade community science effort led by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Birds Canada.Today's discussion could be broadly characterized as "how to take care of the birds that visit your yard" - and you might be surprised at some of the recommendations. Our discussion begins in Australia, where Dr. Greig did her dissertation. Her work studied the amazing behavior of the splendid fairywren, a small and colorful Australian bird, who literally sing in the shadows of a predator. From there, we get into Project FeederWatch and the practice of bird feeding in general. Project FeederWatch has collected an immense dataset that reveals a lot about birds that visit feeders and people's yards in general. We discuss some of the findings, and how you can participate. It's easy! It's a wide ranging discussion, including topics like - does feeding birds affect their migration routes or timing, or their geographic ranges? How to minimize pests getting into your feeders? Does widespread feeding birds impact populations or the composition of bird communities? We also talk about best practices for feeding birds. Yes, we're taking on a responsibility of caring for wild animals, so there are several important things we need to do, such as paying attention to disease spread.Dr. Greig gets into all of this and more. So if you feed birds or are considering feeding birds, this is an important episode to listen to.Find Project FeederWatch on Twitter.Check out Jumpstart Nature's podcast episode #2, "Plant Your Birdfeeder", for more from Dr. Greig and other experts on birds and their habitats.FULL SHOW NOTESLinks To Topics DiscussedFeederWatch Scientific DataKilling with kindness: Does widespread generalised provisioning of wildlife help or hinder biodiversity conservation efforts? - scientific paper by Jack Shutt and Alex LeesPreventing Window StrikesProject FeederWatch - Begins on November 1!.Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicFree download: https://filmmusic.io/song/9616-spellboundLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist website: https://brianholtzmusic.comSupport Us On Patreon!

Welcome to February 13th, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate peaceful pastimes and better cheddar. Birdwatching can be fun, but you have to be very patient. Why not make the birds come to you, courtesy of a bird feeder? There are few things more relaxing than sitting at your kitchen window, coffee in hand, watching birds in your tree only a few feet away. One of the best ways to attract a good variety of birds is to use different types of seed and different feeders. Set them at different heights, and you're almost guaranteed to have a parade of feathered friends. On National Bird Feeding Month—get your feeders set up, pull up a chair, and wait for the inevitable arrival of birds. And probably squirrels. Cheese lovers might not care that their favorite snack is actually named for the place that it's made but today we give thanks to the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. In the U.K. cheddar cheese accounts for more than half of the multi billion dollar cheese market. And here in the United States, cheddar is just behind mozzarella in popularity. So how did this “cheddar love” migrate across the pond? Enter Peter McIntosh, who brought his talent for cheese making to Tillamook County, Oregon in 1894. His superior skills earned him the title of the Cheese King of the Coast, and today there are more cows than people in Tillamook County. On National Cheddar Day savor the flavor that's treasured on both sides of the pond.
