Over the coming months and through our study of the book of Hebrews, we aim to meditate frequently on the glory of Jesus Christ. May our souls be revived by a constant view of his glory - in this book which invites us to consider Christ Jesus, the exalted Savior of weary pilgrims like us. This week we look to Hebrews 3:7-19.Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” Exodus 17:2-4And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?”And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” Numbers 14:2–4Portrait of the hard at heart:They had heard His voiceThey made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Zechariah 7:11-12Portrait of the hard at heart:They had heard His voiceThey were witnesses of God's worksExamine your heart (V. 12)“I beg you to try and understand the fact that your soul is the one thing worth living for… Keep the interests of your soul in mind, morning, noon and night. Get up each day desiring that your soul may prosper; lie down each evening asking yourself whether it has progressed.” - JC RyleSearch me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Psalm 139:23–24For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Over the coming months and through our study of the book of Hebrews, we aim to meditate frequently on the glory of Jesus Christ. May our souls be revived by a constant view of his glory - in this book which invites us to consider Christ Jesus, the exalted Savior of weary pilgrims like us. This week we look to Hebrews 2:10-18.1. Why did Christ need to suffer?2. Why did Christ need to take on flesh?“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:54b-553. Why did Christ need to be made like us?Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. Hebrews 8:1–2He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Over eight weeks, we will consider the substance of the Lord's Prayer - prayerfully seeking to infuse that substance into our own prayers. We will seek to mold our prayers by our Lord's model prayer, communing with our Father God as Jesus himself did. This week, we explore 'Lead us not into temptation...' from Matthew 6:13.Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. James 1:13-14Temptation throughout Scripture Internal Enticement External Enticement Temptation as trialCount it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. James 1:2-3Why should we pray “Lead us not into temptation”?Because of our weaknessBecause of the difficulty of temptations and trials“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39“When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44Why should we pray for God to “Deliver us from evil”?Because of Satan's cunning liesBecause of God's power over SatanHe disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him. Colossians 2:15And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...” Revelation 12:10–11PRAYER PROMPTSPray that God would spare you from trial and temptation.“My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me…” Matthew 26:39aPray that God would give you joy if trial should come your way. “…nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:39b“But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” 1 Peter 4:13Pray that God would deliver you from evil, for the sake of your testimony and for the sake of the Gospel.“Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me…” Psalm 59:1“Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” 1 Peter 2:12For sermon media, and Life Group Discussion guide, visit: lifechurchnc.com/prayLife Church exists to glorify God by making disciples who treasure Christ, grow together, and live on mission. We will spend this Advent season studying the book of Malachi. Through Malachi, the Lord reproves and pursues his people - calling them to remember his covenant, seek him genuinely, and prepare for his coming. This week we look to Malachi 3:13-4:3.ACT 1“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” (2 Cor. 10:5)ACT 2“Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;” (Exodus 19:5)ACT 3“But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.' And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.' He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'” (Luke 16:29-31)"There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done”, and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in hell choose it." - C.S. The New York Yankees beat the Oakland A's 7-3 behind a newly awakened offense and included home runs from Aaron Judge, Anthony Rizzo, and Juan Soto! Judge and Rizzo seem to be getting into a groove with Rizzo hitting his second home run in as many nights. Judge also looked better hitting his home run to right field and also smacking a single right later in the game. We discuss the game and Clarke Schmidt's ‘third time through the order' problem that he can't seem to get past. Then, Brian Cashman talked to The Athletic and had a couple of quotes about the offense—specifically Judge, Rizzo, and Soto—and another one about Soto. Brian wasn't happy with either quote, and he explains why. Cashman also talked about the lack of depth plaguing the Yankees infield, but Stacey doesn't think that's Cashman's fault. He couldn't even foresee all of the injuries that had hit the backup infielders. Then we preview the final game of the four-game set with Oakland between Nestor Cortes and Alex Wood and give you an injury update on DJ LeMahieu and Gerrit Cole. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Yesterday, the San Francisco Giants' and San Diego Padres' most unpopular players in recent memory were discussed. Turns out, there were too many to fit into just one episode. Locked On Giants and Locked On Padres continue to point out the players who were not embraced by fans since they started hosting their respective shows in Part II of the "Love to Hate" series.Numerous recent Giants certainly fall into that category. Even in 2021, when the SF Giants won 107 games, Tommy La Stella was disliked for his poor performance on the field, frequent injuries, and generally unathletic nature. In the last couple of years, after the Giants DFA'd La Stella with a year left on his contract, players like Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Anthony DeSclafani have been the target of fan frustration. Joc Pederson might even qualify now that he left the Giants and liked a negative instagram comment about San Francisco on his way out the door.On the Padres side, there's one clear and obvious winner who stands far above the rest. Eric Hosmer is host Javier Reyes' greatest nemesis. So much so that Hosmer has actually blocked the Locked On Padres twitter account. Hosmer's strong reputation is contrasted against the experience of actually watching him play on a daily basis and looking at the numbers that show he might be one of the most overrated players ever.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb is a top-10 pitcher in major league baseball. The San Francisco Giants are lucky to have him anchoring their rotation for years to come. But beyond Webb, the Giants' current projected rotation is extremely inexperienced. The most experienced of the bunch, Jordan Hicks, has very little experience as a starting pitcher! The rest of the SF Giants' projected starters are young players looking to make their name in the game. Do the Giants need to add pitching after Alex Wood, Ross Stripling, and Anthony DeSclafani have all found new homes? Among the other questions asked and answered on today's mailbag edition of the Locked On Giants podcast: Given how the Giants were reportedly aggressively involved in the Corbin Burnes trade market, doesn't that alone suggest they are still searching for a top of the rotation arm to complement Logan Webb to start the 2024 season? Is it possible to get Jorge Soler and Matt Chapman? Or is it one of them and another starter? Is it realistic to think the Giants will land both Soler and Chapman? Or is it a situation of just one? Is Luis Matos going to be a starter on Opening Day? Do you enjoy the SF Giants' brand of baseball? Are you happy with the direction of this team? Do you think this ownership is committed to winning - as in, is it a priority? What grade do you give the Giants for this offseason? What stat do you value most when evaluating pitchers? Corbin Burnes is on the move. Burnes is heading to Baltimore to join the American League's new juggernaut. The Orioles will surround Burnes with young talent. Baltimore has boasted baseball's best farm system for a while now and those prospects are now turning into MLB stars. The Brewers received rookie infielder Joey Ortiz and LHP D.L. Hall in return. Justin Turner signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Blue Jays. Why are the Red Sox so afraid to spend? Carlos Santana signed with the Twins and Alex Wood signed with the A's. All this (and much more) on today's episode.
Joe talks about some recent players who have signed, including Colt Keith, Hector Neris, Adam Frazier, and Alex Wood
Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Camilo Doval is one of the best closers in baseball. Outside of those two, for the most part, the San Francisco Giants' pitching staff was a major mixed bag in 2023. But Webb and Doval, both 26 years old and under team control for five and four years, respectively, are a great foundation for the SF Giants. Webb led the majors in innings and was as effective as ever at run prevention. He had the NL's best walk rate and led the majors in ground ball rate among qualified pitchers. Doval continued to be nasty and rock solid for the Giants, and ended up tied for the NL lead with 39 saves.Next on the pecking order probably comes Alex Cobb, who was an All-Star for the first time in 2023 but tailed off in the second half as he dealt with a hip injury. Cobb notwithstanding, the Giants' veteran pitchers struggled for the most part. Ross Stripling was dreadful, and Sean Manaea had a really weird season with strong underlying numbers after an awful start. Both have the right to opt out and it's unclear whether Manaea will (Stripling almost certainly won't). Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani were not great at all. Wood's a free agent and there's one more year on DeSclafani's regrettable contract.Several of the bullpen arms were solid, like Tyler Rogers and rookie Ryan Walker. And then there were a handful of exciting young arms, with more on the way. Kyle Harrison, arguably the best left-handed pitching prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut and showed flashes of brilliance despite mixed results. Tristan Beck and Keaton Winn also showed flashes of their potential and those two, along with Harrison and Webb, could form the core of a good young Giants rotation for years to come.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

No fan of the San Francisco Giants wants to be in offseason mode on September 28. But that is, sadly, the state of the Giants right now as they were eliminated from playoff contention two days ago. And so look forward we must, and it begins by taking inventory of which SF Giants players are reaching free agency. Among the headliners: Joc Pederson, Brandon Crawford, and Alex Wood.Next are the guaranteed commitments for the Giants. Michael Conforto ($18M) and Sean Manaea ($12.5M) are possible opt outs, whereas Ross Stripling has already stated he will opt in. Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani are a couple of other SF Giants who will be back on guaranteed deals. Some good guaranteed deals include those to Wilmer Flores and Logan Webb. Finally, the Giants' arbitration-eligible players. This list includes J.D. Davis, Austin Slater, Mike Yastrzemski, LaMonte Wade Jr., Tyler Rogers, and Thairo Estrada. All six seem like pretty easy tender decisions, because the contracts will be cheap relative to free agent prices for similar production. Estrada stands out as a possible extension candidate for the Giants.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants' season is all but over. Losing three of four in LA sealed the Giants' fate, even if they're not technically eliminated just yet. The 2023 Giants season certainly had its positives, but the negatives will stand out more. According to a report in The Athletic, the SF Giants may have damaged their reputation this year by quickly moving pitchers Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, and Alex Wood to the bullpen after early struggles, and benching or platooning high-paid players like Mitch Haniger. While there is probably some truth to the Giants' damaged reputation, it shouldn't stem from those examples. All of those players played their way into their roles, with the one exception being Manaea, who probably deserved to go back into the rotation much earlier than the last couple of weeks. Manaea has quietly been very effective for four months, mostly in a "bulk innings" role out of the 'pen. Losing director of pitching Brian Bannister could harm the Giants as well, and could be part of a much larger shakeup with the coaching staff after this failed season. But things weren't all bad this year for the San Francisco Giants. Rookies Patrick Bailey, Luis Matos, Marco Luciano, Kyle Harrison, Tristan Beck, Keaton Winn, Ryan Walker, Blake Sabol, and others were all imperfect in their own ways, but all provided promise for the future. Among them, several look like long-term major leaguers, and there may even be a star or two among their ranks.Find and follow Locked On Giants:

Just when you're ready to count them out, the 2023 San Francisco Giants have a way of making you believe again. That was certainly the case today, as the Giants looked all but certain to lose as the innings ticked away with the SF Giants facing a large deficit. But down three in the eighth, J.D. Davis delivered perhaps his biggest hit as a Giant with a three-run homer that tied the game and set the Oracle Park crowd into a frenzy. So many players and managerial moves contributed to the SF Giants' wild and improbable win. Alex Wood pitched four excellent innings following a not-so-good outing by Kyle Harrison that kept the Giants within striking distance. Giants manager Gabe Kapler used Tyler Rogers, not Camilo Doval, in the ninth to have the strikeout-heavy Doval available for extra innings and it paid off in a big way. There were so many pinch hitters, including LaMonte Wade Jr., who went 2 for 2 and had the walk-off sac fly.The SF Giants' defense has been a topic of conversation lately, as they passed their error total from last year, which was a miserable year defensively. But anyone who watched last year and has watched this year should be able to tell that this year's team has been vastly better defensively. Two great examples of why errors stink as a measure of defense: Nick Castellanos is so clearly a bad defender, yet he hasn't made an error since 2021. Patrick Bailey, meanwhile, who may be the best defender in MLB, has the second-most errors on the Giants (and 10% of their errors overall).Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants followed up an energizing win with yet another lifeless loss. The Giants' offensive funk has been persistent and profound. Even when the SF Giants show signs of coming out of it, they have another game like yesterday in which they scored only one run—again. Some of the pitching hasn't been much better. Home run-allowing machine Ross Stripling continued to serve up taters like it was his job. Several of Farhan Zaidi's moves haven't panned out in recent years, starting with the decision to let Kevin Gausman leave. Instead, they brought back Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Stripling, Sean Manaea, and Carlos Rodón. Rodón was great but left after a year and Manaea is showing signs of life, but otherwise it's looking like a rough collection of signings, particularly when Gausman wanted to return but SF didn't make him an offer. There was some controversy about Gabe Kapler seemingly making opposite moves with Wade Meckler in the span of three days. In the first game of the series, Kap let Meckler hit agianst a lefty with the bases loaded when Heliot Ramos was an option to pinch hit. In the series finale, he pinch hit Slater for Meckler with the bases loaded down by five runs. While this stirred some emotions, Slater is clearly a superior option against a lefty compared to Ramos (or, probably, Meckler) and so the decision was justifyable. The one argument that holds weight is that Joc Pederson was on deck and there was only one out. So Meckler could hit for himself (and hope to stay out of a double play) and Slater could hit for Joc. Slater's recent struggles don't matter much compared to his recent and prolonged stretch of excellence as a pinch hitter and vs. LHP in general.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!IbottaDownload the free Ibotta app and use code MLB for $5 off when you register. eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
Finally, that good old problem to have comes around for the San Francisco Giants. With Thairo Estrada, Mitch Haniger, Mike Yastrzemski, and John Brebbia likely to come off the IL this month (Estrada as soon as Saturday), the SF Giants must decide who comes off the 26-man roster. Additionally, players like top prospect Kyle Harrison may be added in the coming weeks as well, and he's not even on the 40-man. Isan Díaz, Casey Schmitt, Luis Matos, and AJ Pollock are the position players whose spots are in jeopardy, and the pitching side is even more difficult to sort through with Tristan Beck and Ryan Walker, two pitchers performing well, the only ones who might reasonably be sent down. Jakob Junis and Alex Wood might be DFA candidates, or an IL stint could be used. Worth keeping in mind: rosters expand from 26 to 28 in September. What should Giants fans make of the team's offensive approach? Is it time to question whether Justin Viele is up to the task as SF Giants hitting coach? To answer the question we must go all the way back to 2020, when Donnie Ecker, Viele, and Dustin Lind were hired as hitting coaches to Gabe Kapler's staff. In 2020 and 2021, the San Francisco Giants hit very well, with Ecker the team's primary hitting instructor. The Texas Rangers took Ecker away in 2022, however, and the Giants haven't been the same since. So it's starting to become more clear that Ecker's influence is being missed and the Giants need to evaluate whether they have the personnel in place to get the most out of their hitters. What to make of the Giants' new jersey patches? For the first time ever, the SF Giants are wearing an advertisement on their classic jerseys. It is, unfortunately, here to stay as teams are raking in tens of millions a year from these deals. Finally, what are the odds outfielder Wade Meckler gets called up to the Giants at some point? They seem to be pretty high, as Farhan Zaidi said as much in a recent interview with NBC Sports Bay Area.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

If there was any doubt, the San Francisco Giants put those doubts to rest. With four wins in their last five games, the SF Giants have cemented themselves as clear buyers ahead of Tuesday's 3 PM PT trading deadline. The Giants have certainly shown their imperfections in recent weeks, but they're still only two games out of first place, they're the top wild card team in the NL, and they're 10 games over .500. So... what must the Giants accomplish by tomorrow's deadline? The San Francisco Giants look like a team that needs another starting pitcher. Right now, the Giants only have Logan Webb and Alex Cobb as clear starters. The Giants have many "bulk guys" such as Alex Wood, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, and Tristan Beck, but another clear-cut starter could go a long way. Eduardo Rodriguez and Justin Verlander stand out as the best fits remaining. The SF Giants could also use a versatile hitter. Tommy Edman stands out as a great fit because he can play short, second, third, and all three outfield positions. But the Cardinals may not very well not trade him. Versatility should be important in an addition because the Giants have some of these positions dedicated to players who will eventually return from the IL, such as Thairo Estrada (who's close to a rehab assignment) and Mitch Haniger (who says he might be ready well before the original estimate of early September).Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The San Francisco Giants' biggest need is frontline starting pitching. As the Giants stand now, only Logan Webb and Alex Cobb are reliable arms in the starting rotation. Top prospect Kyle Harrison may become an option down the stretch, but Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Sean Manaea, and Ross Stripling have failed to seize slam-dunk starters' roles. Trade candidates include Dylan Cease, Blake Snell, Eduardo Rodriguez, Justin Verlander, Marcus Stroman, and Jordan Montgomery. All of those players would fit the SF Giants well, but Rodriguez might offer the best blend of availability, impact, and acquisition cost.Another SF Giants need has been said to be middle infield, but is that still a need after the promotion of top shortstop prospect Marco Luciano? Luciano has just one MLB game under his belt, but Brandon Crawford is also close to returning and Thairo Estrada is not too far behind. Casey Schmitt and Brett Wisely have struggled to cement roles thus far. Someone like Paul DeJong doesn't seem like a great fit because he's limited to shortstop. Another Cardinals player, however, makes a lot of sense. Tommy Edman can play short, second, third, and all three outfield positions—and play them well. Can the Giants offload one or more of their "unpitchable" starters? It was reported yesterday that teams have contacted the San Francisco Giants about their veteran pitching depth, and a move seems possible if not likely. In order to add pitching, the Giants would need to clear space on the MLB roster, but there aren't obvious ways to do so with so few players having minor league options. And the Giants pitchers who do have options are guys they wouldn't want to option. It's possible the Giants could include a veteran starter to offset money in a deal.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
