In this week's episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by broadcaster and journalist Naga Munchetty, known for her role on BBC Breakfast. Naga discusses her new book, It's Probably Nothing, where she explores how women's health concerns are often dismissed, left undiagnosed, or told their pain was normal'. Drawing on her own personal experiences, she examines the harmful impact of medical misogyny and stresses the urgent need for change in how women's health issues are treated. Naga reflects on the pressure she felt in sharing her personal experiences publicly, balancing her role as a journalist with the vulnerability of becoming the story. Yet by speaking out, she realised how many others had experienced similar struggles. Her diagnosis of adenomyosis took over three decades, a delay that mirrors the experiences of many women conditioned to minimise their symptoms. The conversation highlights the emotional toll of being dismissed in the healthcare system and the barriers that prevent women from advocating for themselves. Both Naga and Louise emphasise the importance of genuine listening and collaboration in medical care, calling for greater support systems, second opinions, and the vital role of self-advocacy. They also highlight the need for better care for marginalised communities, particularly in regions where the word “menopause” doesn't even exist and women struggle to receive the support they need. This episode is a powerful call for more compassionate, inclusive, and informed healthcare for women everywhere. This episode serves as a powerful call for better treatment, increased awareness, and stronger support systems for women in healthcare. I am joined by Kate Allatt to discuss her experience of, and advocacy for, locked-in state as she narrated in her book Running Free: Breaking out of Locked in Syndrome.Kate has an extraordinary journey of resilience after being ‘buried alive', the result of a brainstem stroke when she was just 39. She described this as a condition where you can feel, think, hear and see completely normally but are unable to move a single muscle. She explored the transformation from being an active and passionate runner to being helpless and requiring help for every need.Kate chronicled the onset of her symptoms with a headache and slurred speech, and the subsequent progression of her symptoms with loss of consciousness that culminated in being completely locked-in. She also recalled the thoughts and emotions that dominated her mind in the subsequent stages of her illness. Our conversation also covered such concepts as the pessimism that permeates the attitude to the care of people in locked-in, the potential for completely recovery even the most extreme cases, the role of intense rehabilitation and determination in recovering from locked-in state, and the concept of neuroplasticity. She particularly highlighted how she brought her passionate attitude to running to her rehabilitation.Kate is an inspirational speaker and will also discuss the impact her advocacy and peer mentoring has made to thousands of families around the world. Running Free has been showcased on BBC Jeremy Vine, ITV This Morning, BBC Breakfast, The One Show, Women's Hour, Newsnight, Loose Women, BBC Worldwide, India, South Africa, USA, South America etc. In addition, she founded a charity just three months from leaving hospital in 2011.

The old wisdom held that Democrats could rely on the votes of those in the Black and Latino communities - often immigrant families that felt that party were on their side. But in recent elections that has started to shift. Kamala Harris is struggling to win the Black vote at the same levels Joe Biden won it in 2020, which pushed him over the line. And her latest pitch is an economic plan specifically tailored to Black men. Is this smart or reductive? And can Trump capitalise on that gap? What exactly is a 'working person'? At the heart of that question is the answer to whether or not you think Labour has fudged its promise not to put up taxes in the budget in two weeks. Yesterday the Prime Minister refused to rule out increasing the national insurance contribution employers pay on their staff - having promised 'no increases on income tax, VAT or NI for WORKING PEOPLE'. So are they breaking an election promise? And will it damage trust if they do? Journalist, broadcaster, and now author, Louise Minchin, overcomes wild weather, technical issues, and a hotel turn-down, to chat to Gabby this week on The Mid•Point! Louise shares her love of swimming, and how finding a passion for triathlon later in life unwittingly helped her to navigate the menopause; she describes it as “self medication”. Louise also talks about big midlife decisions and what it was like when she left BBC Breakfast to pursue her writing career, as well as her obsession with reality TV, and how snacks and naps are two of her favourite things! Louise's new novel Isolation Island is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
My guest today is author, endurance athlete and ex BBC breakfast presenter Louise Minchin. Louise is, of course, best known for her twenty year stint on BBC Breakfast's sofa but she has also been main news anchor on the BBC News, presented The One Show and participated in a host of reality TV shows including I'm a Celebrity get me out of here. Since leaving the sofa, she has chaired the Women's Prize for Fiction, honed her skills as an endurance athlete (she qualified for the Great Britain Age-Group Triathlon Team in 2015 for the World Triathlon Championships in Chicago, and completed the Norseman triathlon - she doesn't do things by halves!) and turned her hand to writing. Louise's latest book is a heartstopping thriller called Isolation Island, which takes ten celebrities and dumps them in a derelict monastery on a remote scottish island. Think I'm A Celebrity meets Traitors with a splash of Big Brother and you're halfway there! Louise joined me to talk about the importance of putting women of all ages centre stage and how she built a new career off the breakfast TV sofa. We also discussed how perimenopause robbed her of herself, the power of adventure, how she learnt to love her body for what it can do not how it looks and why she wants to encourage more women to take a risk in midlife. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Isolation Island by Louise Minchin and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. With Dennis Tueart, club legend (player and board member). Plenty of eyebrows were raised in 2001 when former England manager Kevin Keegan was named the new boss of Manchester City. Super Kev brought instant success to the club, winning a league title in his first season and also establishing City in the Premier League. She shares inspiring content to over 100,000 followers on social media and has appeared on TV multiple times - Nichola is a regular on BBC Breakfast, ITV Tonight and Channels 4 and 5, and regularly provides commentary to numerous tabloids and press outlets. She advocates for a better relationship with food, so that others can build healthier habits that lead to lasting change. She is also the author of the new book How Not To Eat Ultra-Process, Your 4 week Plan For Life Changing Healthier Habits! Here are some of the things we talked about in today's podcast: Understanding the nuances of processed foods and the differences between processed and ultra-processed foods is essential for making informed dietary choices. Consuming highly processed foods can have disadvantages, such as impacting energy levels and nutrient intake, and it's crucial to prioritize whole foods and nutrient-dense options. Online nutrition information can contribute to health anxieties and misinformation, and it's important to critically evaluate sources and seek evidence-based guidance from qualified professionals. Navigating nutrition information online can be challenging due to conflicting advice and unregulated sources. Understanding head, heart, and stomach hunger can help in making mindful food choices. Fasting may have different implications for women, and individual context should be considered. The power of food for skin health lies in nourishment and what is added to the diet. Approaching nutrition from a perspective of addition and abundance is more beneficial than focusing on subtraction and scarcity. The UK government has finally caught onto the significance of avoiding death by maintaining the systems of our space ship. Namely, a couple of months ago it became law to cause a 10% gain in biodiversity for any development of 10+ buildings. A month ago this became law for smaller developments also. End of November next year, large developments of national significance will be held to the same standard. As such, a niche for biodiversity net gain measurement has emerged. A company called Map Impact (https://www.mapimpact.io/) is seeking to dominate it. They have started by introducing a tool called Biodiversity View. This measures biodiversity units at your development site. The company is gaining some traction, for example they recently featured on BBC Breakfast. It was a pleasure to take their media coverage to the next level by featuring Nina Moiseeva (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nina-gis/), Senior Earth Observation Scientist, on the podcast. THE GEOSPATIAL INDEX The Geospatial Index is a comprehensive listing of all publicly traded geospatial businesses worldwide. Why? The industry is growing at ~10% annually. This varies significantly, however, by sub index. For only $58,000 to start, this growth rate is $5,000,000 over a working life. This channel, Bluesky account, newsletter, watchlist and podcast express the view that you are serious about geospatial if you take the view of an investor, venture capitalist or entrepreneur. You are expected to do your own research. This is not a replacement for that. This is not investment advice. Consider it entertainment. Louise is a journalist, broadcaster, podcaster and writer. She presented BBC Breakfast for 20 years and before that was a news anchor on the BBC News Channel and the BBC's One O'clock News. She has also presented The One Show, Five Live Drive, Real Rescues and Missing Live and has been a contestant on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Time Crashers and Celebrity MasterChef. Her second book Fearless, Adventures with Extraordinary Women was published by Bloomsbury on 25th May 2023. It reflect her passion for celebrating women's success. In each chapter Louise takes on a different challenge with a courageous woman, to get to know them and tell their incredible stories. About the book: Fearless, Adventures with Extraordinary Women JOIN LOUISE MINCHIN ON 17 EXHILARATING ADVENTURES WITH TRAILBLAZING WOMEN WHO ARE BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS, SMASHING RECORDS AND CHALLENGING STEREOTYPES. 'To get to the heart of who these women are… I decided to do it the way that I know best, by taking part, spending time right beside them to experience the things they love.' Driven to bring more attention to female stories of courage and endeavour, Louise Minchin pushes herself to the extreme and embarks on thrilling endurance adventures with trailblazing women. She freedives under the ice in the dark in Finland with Cath, the first woman to swim a mile in the Antarctic Circle; she cycles across Argentina with Mimi, one of the world's most famous female endurance runners; and she swims from Alcatraz with Anaya and Mitali, two young sisters who have braved the shark-infested waters over 70 times. With her natural empathy and sense of humour, Louise forms close bonds with 18 incredible women. She explores what drives them and how they find the resilience and determination to go on despite life's setbacks. Lizzie overcame a life-threatening illness and now paddleboards whilst cleaning up the planet with her community; Rhian set up a charity in the face of grief and fundraises through hikes; and Zee took up rugby alongside her busy nursing career and motherhood. Louise reminds us of the bravery inside us all, and how essential it is to celebrate women's achievements. Prepare to be touched and inspired by these fearless women. *** Don't miss out on the latest episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast, released every Tuesday at 7am UK time!
