Already fiercely championed by a slew of highly esteemed collaborators and tastemakers across the UK and US, independent, Soul newcomer Mica Millar's debut album – “Heaven Knows” was released in June 2022 to critical review. 'Heaven Knows' is self-written, arranged and produced with inspiration drawn from a plethora of vintage soundscapes, notably, soul, blues, gospel and jazz. Respectful nods are paid to girl groups of the 60's and 70's and classic Motown, giving her songs a timeless quality that is both reassuringly familiar yet distinctively hers. Chloe Lawrence is a Manchester based, Essex born and Spanish bred singer-songwriter and street musician. Jon Gomm, based in Yorkshire in the UK, is an acoustic singer-songwriter with a revolutionary virtuoso guitar style, where he uses one acoustic guitar to create drum sounds, bass lines and twisting melodies all at the same time. The emphasis is still on the soulful vocals and songwriting, and his original material is influenced by everything from Robert Johnson to Radiohead. Jon is a truly and fiercely independent artist, with his own label and no mainstream industry support, but using mostly online social networks for promotion, he has defied the odds with a huge, truly supportive fanbase resulting in headline tours on all 5 continents, from Australia, Canada and Europe to China and South Africa and South America. Rob Gomm is a vegan chef at Upside Down Cafe, a specialty coffee shop in Blackpool on the North West coast of the UK. Blackpool usually specialises in penny arcades, inflatable beach balls and hot, sugary doughnuts on the promenade, and it does not have a coffee culture…yet. In the summer of 1965 a chance meeting between John Howarth and the brothers Larry and Gerry Kearns in the Highfield and Park pub in Waterloo Street, Oldham, saw the beginning of years of fun and music for the Oldham Tinkers, and indeed for Anybody who happened to listen to them. When asked to describe their own music, the Oldham Tinkers are uncertain. Some people call it simply “folk”, but does that word sum it up? It involves a wealth of children's material, gleaned mainly from their own childhoods, a host of airs and lilts bequeathed by their family backgrounds, narrative songs, music hall songs, dialect songs and poetry, pub songs, daft songs, and deeply sincere songs, often sad. Initially inspired by the music of Billy Joel, Elbow and Joni Mitchell, Ollie's writing has explored jazz, folk, world music, pop, rock, prog and classical music to create a unique sound like nothing you've ever heard before. Their debut album “Time Stood Still” from 2019 took the band around the UK on a 16 date tour that included sell out shows in Manchester, London and The Wirral, and the success of single “Home” from that record saw them become “Young Artist Of The Week” on classical music station Scala Radio, with multiple plays on the station from Simon Mayo, Angellica Bell and Sam Hughes. Ollie's latest single “Count To Four” tells a heartfelt and moving story from the perspective of a person who has been left by someone they love, and might be one of the band's finest works to date. Rodrigo Constanzo makes art. He thinks this is an important thing to do. The art he makes is generally smeared in time, in the form of music. He improvises and acts as an antennae to the beauty, electricity, and endless surprise that is living a crazy life. He composes and tries to create new sounds, interactions and behaviors that he find interesting and challenging. He performs his own music and the music of others on a variety of instruments, with close friends. He believes in magic. He believes in sharing things. He believes in teaching. He believes in openness. He love sweet jams, and avoids speaking with a complicated vocabulary as much as possible. He tries to live as presently and honestly as possible. Ryan Buxton is a singer-songwriter based in Manchester, UK. Here's some words from the man himself: 'Someone described my music as a grunge-y cuddle a few years ago and I have just decided to run with it. I feel like it sums up what I am trying to do nicely. I like dark music. Music you can listen to on your own at night and just stare out of the window to. Equally though, I want my music to have the same feeling as spending a night with your mate, talking it all through and just feeling lighter at the end of it. Lyrically I work hard to try and say something that I can stand by or that I feel has a good feeling to it. It's not always negative but I do find songwriting a great way to process the negative stuff and then move on. So, yeah, I make grunge cuddles.' This weeks guest is the wonderful Chloe Foy. She joined us in the studio for a live intimate performance and chinwag! Chloe has shared her most direct track yet, ‘Work of Art', ahead of the arrival of her long-awaited debut album, ‘Where Shall We Begin', on June 11. Coming off the back of her performance at last week's The Great Escape, it's fitting that Foy launches her latest single on the week venues re-open across the country. An ode to the gig-going community, it celebrates the confidence she gained from audiences to let go and live in the moment. Speaking of the track, Foy said: “For me, music can't fulfil its true meaning without sharing it in a room with others. That is the magic. When I'm singing “Bodies glow, you're a work of art”, I'm talking about music lovers together in a room.
