A veteran coach of the WNBL, most recently with Bendigo Spirit, she has uniquely cut her teeth coaching both men's and women's basketball, including a near 5 year stint as the Assistant Coach with NBL's Adelaide 36'ers. Co-host Ally Wilson from the Bendigo Spirit joins Megan Hustwaite to celebrate Indigenous Round alongside guest Nes'eya Parker-Williams from the Townsville Fire.
In this episode we talk to Coach Kennedy Kereama, Head Coach of the Bendigo Spirit. At the close of Round 13 the Spirit are one of the top 5 teams in contention for a playoff berth. It's a tight WNBL season with not much separating the top 5 teams, and as the inevitable upsets and injuries tip the balance in the run up to the playoffs, Coach Kennedy takes the approach of ‘one game at a time'. As one of the most experienced leadership groups of any of the WNBL teams, he encourages an all-team approach where ‘everybody brings something to the table'. We're grateful that Coach Kennedy takes a moment to relfect on the season, sharing some of his hard earned lessons on his journey from NZ to regional Vic and the WNBL, coaching in the often financially fragile women's leagues, including the NZ National women's team the Tall Ferns and the WNBL's first Kiwi team. He talks of his respect for fellow WNBL coaches and the often lonely road they share at the elite level, as well as the key people on his coaching journey that has shaped his own coaching style that's reflected in the Spirit's identity.Enjoy! Playing in Sydney for the first time this WNBL season is Captain of the Sydney Flames Keely Froling and the team. Keely has been posting amazing individual performances while learning to navigate the dual role of fierce competitor and leader as Captain of one of the youngest squads in the league. We talk to Keely about the teams gruelling on-the-road start around Australia and the excitement of finally getting to Sydney and their home crowd for this weekend's double header with the Sydney Kings at the home of the hugely successful FIBA Women's World Cup in a rematch with the Bendigo Spirit.Possibly one of the grittiest athletes, schooled under Marianna Tolo's leadership and a self-confessed 'white line fever' player, Keely is fine tuning her leadership skills and understands the need to bring her young squad together and look ahead positively, “it's going to click at some point and we're going to get those win's rolling on the board”.We're grateful to Keely for her openness in sharing on the diffciulties of her college experience and no doubt this has shaped the resilience and grit she's known for as one of the youngest players to enter the league. We also get to know her a little bit more off the court away from the nation's biggest city, and of course we go off-script with the usual hilarious results - listen out for that one!Enjoy!Don't forget to like, share and leave a review so we can get more Hoops content to you!Join us on our socials - Twitter: @TheBreezePod and IG: @shootingthebreezepod

Arj Perera is a coach with over 15 years experience, but has travelled the less worn path to achieve some impressive results over that time.He owns and operates his own private S&C facility in regional Victoria (a city called Bendigo) and has also been a part of the WNBL scene (with the Bendigo Spirit) and the Australian Womens Volleyball team as well.I think it’s partly because he went along a different path, that he in fact developed some sound business and marketing skills that many S&C Coaches don’t possess, or perhaps didn’t think they needed to.And so Arj now finds himself consulting and mentoring with other S&C Coaches to help them forge a career and business in the private sector. This was a discussion that shines a light on how important it is for S&C Coaches to perhaps start seeing themselves as business operators that operate in the space of physical improvement and performance, rather than coaches of physical improvement that want to have a business.FB: Arj Pererahttps://humanmechanics.com.au/Just a thought….
Donny is finishing the very last of his picking, Charlie is in mourning over not being on his Coachella holiday, and I have been off the farm twice in the past three weeks.Needless to say, things are a little slow for some of us right now, but never fear… Donny will be back next week and we shall be talking to Noel Costa about all of the Government Subsidies and stimulus packages available for everyone, blockies, casuals, the self employed etc etc. This week though, I thought I'd feature this little chat I had with a bloke called Mick.Mick is the marketing and commercial partnerships manager at Bendigo Stadium Limited, who are the home of the WNBL team the Bendigo Spirit.Last year, I got a call from him with an idea to bring the Spirit to the region, to do all of that stuff that national sports organisations and athletes should do. So I will ask him the question, but first we got a little nostalgic, as happens when you're chatting with old friends.Next week Donny will be finished picking and after our conversation this week, he's in pretty good spirits… Charlie will be around somewhere and we shall see if we can check in with him too and get his cardboard cut out auctioned off!For now – stay home, stay safe and support local business. This podcast is a Clear Eyes Media Production.Become a VIP and support this podcast : patreon.com/thevalepodcastHomecourt is available here
