Humanise The Numbers - for ambitious accountants in practice
When your clients feel at home, they tend to want to stay at home. That's a statement by James Butterworth, a tech and advisory specialist from the VIP team at Croner-i.In this podcast discussion, I was surprised by how this conversation moved to a place where we discussed how a better understanding of the client and what they want, as well as tax law and the way you manage your clients' tax affairs, is what ultimately humanises the numbers. This is a fascinating conversation with James which essentially confirms that the better you are at being curious about what's in the best interests of your clients, you build stronger relationships that ensure that clients are more likely to stay with you. If it's a prospect, they are more likely to join your firm because you take a proactive approach to your clients' tax affairs using the support of a specialist. This is far from a sales pitch from James – it's more a ‘what can you do in general practice to make more of tax when working with your clients?' It was an unexpected, enjoyable and valuable conversation with James. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. You can get access to the full podcast discussion on your favourite podcast platform or go to www.humanisethenumbers.online.Please scroll down the podcast's episode page for the contact information for James and for the additional, downloadable resources mentioned in this podcast.

Send us a Text Message. When I was a kid, we always looked forward to my dad's work picnic. He was a tool and dye maker for a leading caster manufacturer that would rent out a local park, make a ton of food and put on various games and activities for the families. One of the highlights of this day was a softball game pitting the office versus the shop. The good-natured shots that were fired across the dugouts of this summer classic reminds me of the challenges we see in industrial cybersecurity when it comes to bringing OT and IT teams together. While great strides have been made and numerous lessons learned on why these groups need to sync up, the reality is that we still have a long way to go. Over the last couple of months we've had some interesting takes on how to realize this need, so let's revisit the following thoughts on the IT-OT working relationship from:Kris Lovejoy, Global Security and Resilience Leader at Kyndryl.John Cusimano, VP of OT Security at Armexa.Josh Williams, Strategic Account Manager at IriusRisk.Rod Locke, director of project management at Fortinet. This season you've seen our men's and women's squads wearing an unreleased helmet from our partners over at POC. Its look is definitely eye-catching and there's no shortage of opinions about how it looks, but the numbers and results speak for themselves. We speak with Magnus Gustavsson, POC's Hard Goods Director and engineer behind the Procen Air, as well as Andreas Klier, our team's technical Operations and Commercial Manager who oversees equipment for EF Pro Cycling. These two share the story behind the Procen Air's development, how POC always ensure they are going above and beyond on safety, and what the future looks like for cycling helmets. So join us on this ride as we explore the world of cycling together. My name is Kathryn Ezra, and this is the Explore Podcast.

Joy is...Watching Football (with a Dog).Stef Mcloughlin is the Commercial Manager for Lewes FC, a football club that is not only committed to gender equality but is really showcasing how, with the right approach, sport can be a catalyst for societal change. There are infinite creative ways that the 100% fan owned club is doing this, but perhaps the most remarkable achievement is that Lewes FC became the first team across the globe to both pay and resource the men's and women's teams equally. Since this move in 2017, attendance and sponsorship have surged, which is testimony to the power of commitment, passion and innovation in driving real change. Stef is a brilliant advocate for the meaningful work that Lewes FC is doing, not just on a local level but on the world stage, in terms of championing women's sport. Talking to her, it is soon clear how what Lewes is doing is not just about football but how we can live, work and play in a more connected, compassionate and equitable way in all aspects of our lives. Lewes is a team but it's also a community and one that more and more people, across the world, want to be a part of.Follow: @stefmic@lewesfcwomenwww.lewesfc.com Hosted on Acast. Today on the podcast, I am syncing up with Hunt Wheels & The Rider Firm Co-Founder Peter Marchmont and Lead Product and Commercial Manager, Paddy Brown. Hunt Bike Wheels are cutting-edge performance wheels, hand built, for all types of cycling road, gravel, mtb, and beyond. I invited them on the podcast to do a deeper dive and get a look at what it's like as a founder building a business in the cycling world, especially wheels, we talk about the aerodynamics and bells and whistle across Hunt Wheels function and design, the many business under The Rider Firm umbrella, and how both Paddy and Peter got into cycling and what events are on their bucket lists. That's changing, largely due to a company called Plasback. Neal Shaw, Plasback's Commercial Manager, stepped Ross Inglis through the fast-evolving business of recycling farm plastics.

Exports drive economic growth, and every year, the UK exports around £1.5 billion worth of red meat around the globe. In 2021, more than 550,000 tonnes of sheep meat, beef, and pork were shipped (according to AHDB analysis of trade data from IHS Maritime & Trade – Global Trade Atlas – HMRC). AHDB's Market Intelligence and Exports teams are collaborating to boost exports to current markets and explore new opportunities for UK agri-food over the next decade. Dr Phil Hadley, Director of International Development at AHDB, has been discussing this activity at various events, including the recent National Farmers Union (NFU) Conference and the Annual Meat Conference in Texas. In this episode, we discuss the recent mission to the US aimed at exploring opportunities for exporting UK lamb, beef, and pork. The mission centred around the Annual Meat Conference in Texas, where AHDB and exporters had the opportunity to network with over 1,500 meat professionals from across the US. The visit was a success and resulted in valuable connections with American buyers, potentially boosting red meat exports. "The Good Listening To" Podcast with me Chris Grimes! (aka a "GLT with me CG!")
Delighted to be welcoming the very talented Ghost writer & Biographer James Hogg to The Good Listening To Show: Stories of Distinction & Genius I first came across James via his wonderful Twitter feed @JamesAHogg2 James Hogg is a biographer, ghostwriter and collaborator who specialises in sport and entertainment.Born in the Yorkshire Dales, he began his writing career whilst working for the Yorkshire County Cricket Club where he spent several years masquerading as the club's Commercial Manager. In between failed attempts at securing sponsors and smoking with Brian Close, James wrote two acclaimed biographies whilst at Headingley. The first, ‘What's the Bleeding Time?' discloses the life and times of the actor and naturalist James Robertson Justice and features a foreword by H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh. The second, ‘Little Ern: The Authorised Biography of Ernie Wise', was a collaboration with the writer of Hellraisers, Robert Sellers, as was James's next book, ‘Hello Darlings! The Authorised Biography of Kenny Everett'. James left Headingley in 2012, after which the club began to flourish both on and off the pitch.James lives in Yorkshire with his wife and two children. More about James Hogg: James Hogg is an extraordinary man. He does not attract conventional labels. He says he is someone who writes. But he does not see himself as a Writer! And he is not a Reader, either. He does not have a Social Media Presence, apart from a tiny corner on Twitter. He does not have a slick website selling his significant skills as a wordsmith and original ideas man. He has absolutely no ambition to write a single word of fiction. Instead he applies his considerable imagination to facts and helps others to tell their stories in a voice that sounds like theirs, not his. He is a contrary but not confrontational North Yorkshireman, who is good at making enough money to sustain his unconventional lifestyle. This includes regular trips to Brazil and Gran Canaria to get his words down against the deadline.James Hogg was born in Coverdale. His parents were involved in horses and horse racing. It did not appeal to him. He left school at 15, with no academic qualifications. He left home at 17, borrowing £30 to cover the coach to London and still have a few quid spare for emergencies. He immediately got a job as a Bell Boy at the Cumberland Hotel, doubling his basic wages with freelance services in support of visitors from the Middle East. When a career in the hotel business held no more appeal to him, he moved to the Theatre under the guidance ofTune in next week for more stories of 'Distinction & Genius' from The Good Listening To Show 'Clearing'. In this episode, Jeannette talks to James Cole who is a travel industry veteran and the founder and owner of Panache Cruises. They discuss how he was able to establish a successful cruise business just as the pandemic started and still grow it despite the fact there were no cruises for his team to sell. How he and his team used the pandemic to lay the foundations of the success they are experiencing today. KEY TAKEAWAYS Niching down in an industry that James knows well has helped his businesses to thrive. Genuinely, being there for your customers builds strong relationships with them and creates loyalty. Panache Cruises are bringing back old-fashioned one-on-one, in-person, customer service. Being there to answer questions and share information during the pandemic meant people came back to them when it was possible to book cruises. Planning long-term is healthy for a business. Looking after yourself physically and mentally is key to success. You must believe in yourself, keep going and have good people around you. Appreciate and celebrate success including the smaller ones, for example, when a new recruit secures their first booking. BEST MOMENTS ‘It started as a spreadsheet that looked at what the cash flow would be like. ´ ‘Our strapline is that nothing is too much trouble, and we genuinely live by that philosophy.' ‘There's a cruise out there for everyone.' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It's never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. In his early career he helped set up The Cruise Store for MyTravel, a dedicated cruise retailer, which grew to £120m in sales in 3 years and, following the coming together of MyTravel and Thomas Cook in 2007, he then merged their two cruise businesses into a £300m entity which at the time was the UK's largest cruise retailer. Since then James has been the driving force behind many of the UK's largest cruise brands, including Cruise118, Six Star Cruises and River Voyages. During his highly entrepreneurial career, he has retailed over £1bn of cruise holidays. James launched Panache Cruises in July 2020 at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, using the period of lockdown to develop his business plans and establish the business. Initially employing a team of 15 in the North West, the business promises to offer an unrivalled level of personal service to those wishing to cruise in luxury, offering customers a 24/7 ‘nothing is too much trouble service.' The company's inventory of cruises offers over 7,000 itineraries, visiting over 1,000 ports of call with 20 of the world's leading luxury cruise lines that specialise in Elite Ocean, River, Expedition, and Yacht-style cruising, including Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Silversea, Seabourn, Crystal, Azamara, Celebrity, Scenic, Emerald, Uniworld, Hurtigruten, Aurora Expeditions, Riviera, Avalon and SeaDream Yacht Club. Since its launch Panache has reached over 1.25m luxury cruisers and built a database of over 30,000 contacts and growing. The business has also delivered a highly impressive performance during this time, generating £10 million in sales – against a backdrop of a global pandemic. The company posted a turnover of £5m in its first full year of operation and is already making a monthly EBITDA profit. It is currently on target to make an overall profit in its second full year of trading. Panache Cruises is seeking to employ a team of 100, be the largest seller of luxury and ultra-luxury cruises in the UK and achieve a turnover of £60m+ and EBITDA of £3m+ by 2027. James was born and continues to live in Bolton and was a former pupil of Parklands High School in Chorley and Runshaw College in Leyland. He later became an MBA graduate and Honorary Fellow of the University of Central Lancashire. In 2011 he was named the Travel Industry Hall of Fame's Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and in August 2021 he was announced as the winner of the John Hays Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2021 at the Travel Industry Awards 2021 by TTG. James is married to Heather and has three children. Easily one of the most interesting conversations that I have been part of all week. EV, battery and infrastructure demands laid bare. Iggy Tan, CEO, Altech Chemicals and Joel Crane, Investor Relations & Commercial Manager, Cobalt Blue, talk about the realities of how public companies insert themselves into the European Car manufacturing ecosystem. Battery and car manufacturers are desperate to secure battery metals and technology supplies from now until 2030, and are struggling. Prices are being driven up by the lack of supply. Can companies like these two take advantage of that? And what support will they get from Europe to fund the development of their projects. Not many will get across the line so pay attention to the ones that will.
