The ADAPT Research Ireland Centre at Dublin City University (DCU), in partnership with TU Dublin, has secured significant national funding to lead Ireland's first dedicated AI literacy campaign for older adults. Backed by the Research Ireland Discover Programme, the 'Age-Friendly AI': Ireland's National Artificial Intelligence Literacy Initiative will engage over 60,000 older people across the country, ensuring their voices shape the future of artificial intelligence in Ireland. Building on ADAPT's award-winning public engagement programmes, such as #DiscussAI, this nationwide campaign will include citizen think-ins, co-creation workshops, public participation events, and a national roadshow. Through these initiatives, Age-Friendly AI aims to empower older adults to navigate the opportunities and challenges of AI, from understanding data privacy to recognising misinformation. Dr Emma Clarke, Engaged Research Lead at the ADAPT Research Centre, DCU, highlights the potential for societal impact: "Age-Friendly AI: Ireland's National Artificial Intelligence Literacy Initiative builds on the ADAPT Centre's track record in driving AI dialogue and literacy through its #DiscussAI programme. This new initiative will leverage ADAPT public engagement formats such as Citizens' Think-Ins to prioritise reaching communities often excluded from AI conversations, ensuring their ideas contribute to co-creating an AI literacy initiative that serves them. Taking a human-centred approach is vital for the positive societal impact of AI." The groundbreaking initiative responds to research indicating that while older adults see the benefits of AI in areas like health and mobility, they also express concerns about its complexity and risks. 'Age-Friendly AI' will work closely with trusted partners, including Age Action, Age Friendly Ireland, CSLinc, the Centre for Smart Ageing, Insight, the National Disability Authority, the RDI Hub, Senior Times, Workday, and evaluation partner Stickydot. "AI is rapidly changing our world, and it's crucial that older adults are not left behind," said Paula Kelly, the 'Age-Friendly AI' initiative lead at TU Dublin. "This initiative will ensure that older people have a voice in the development and use of AI, and will help to bridge the digital divide and create a more inclusive future." The 'Age-Friendly AI' initiative is led by researchers based in TU Dublin and the Education and Public Engagement (EPE) team at ADAPT in DCU and has been funded as part of Research Ireland's Discover Programme, which focuses on creating meaningful public engagement with STEM, emphasising collaboration with communities. The Discover programme seeks to drive innovation in STEM education and public engagement, contributing to Ireland's industry, enterprise and societal progress. The project was officially launched by Francis Brennan, Age Friendly Ireland Ambassador for Kerry, at TU Dublin on 27 March 2024. There are many ways to get involved and contribute to this important conversation. Debate Over Facial Recognition Technology Heats Up as New Government Talks Begin

As Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael engage in talks to form the next Irish government, the controversial issue of facial recognition technology (FRT) in policing is back in the spotlight. With plans to introduce FRT into Garda operations already on the table, this topic is expected to become a flashpoint in political and public debates in the months ahead. Adding to the conversation, a public Think-In event titled Facing the Future: Let's Talk Facial Recognition Technology was held recently at The Digital Hub as part of Beta Festival. Co-organised by Dr Ciara Bracken-Roche and Dr Emma Clarke of the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre for AI-Driven Digital Content Technology, the event provided a platform for experts and citizens to critically assess the potential impact of FRT on Irish society. The session featured contributions from Daniel Kahn Gillmor, Senior Staff Technologist at the ACLU, and Olga Cronin, Senior Policy Officer at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL). Both highlighted major concerns, including the risk of bias in FRT systems, threats to personal privacy, and the broader implications for civil liberties. Participants were invited to discuss real-world scenarios, such as using FRT to identify a vandal after a car was damaged or tracking a hit-and-run driver. These discussions revealed a complex web of ethical and practical questions about how this technology might be used responsibly, or abused, in law enforcement. The Think-In also included Calculating Empires, an immersive research visualisation by Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler. The artwork examines how technological systems and societal structures have evolved over centuries, offering a powerful lens through which to view the modern surveillance landscape. This debate takes place against the backdrop of significant political change. As the new government takes shape, its stance on FRT will likely signal Ireland's broader approach to balancing technological innovation with the protection of civil rights. The issue became especially pressing last year, when the government proposed using FRT for serious crimes, including riots and violent disorder, following public disturbances in Dublin. Supporters argue that FRT could improve Garda efficiency by speeding up video analysis in investigations, while opponents, including the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, warn of the potential for mass surveillance and errors that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Calls for robust safeguards and comprehensive legislative scrutiny have been growing louder. With public trust, privacy, and security at stake, the debate over facial recognition technology is certain to remain a high-profile issue as the next government sets its priorities. ADAPT researchers are at the forefront of addressing these challenges. Dr. Abeba Birhane and Dr. Ciara Bracken-Roche have made expert testimonies for the Oireachtas' Joint Committee on Justice's Pre-Legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Garda Síochána (Recording Devices) (Amendment) Bill 2023, and co-authored prominent opinion pieces warning about granting Gardaí extensive FRT capabilities risks creating "roaming surveillance units" and foreshadows "big problems" if such technology is adopted without rigorous safeguards. ADAPT's work on trustworthy AI focuses on ensuring that emerging technologies like FRT are developed and deployed ethically, transparently, and with public trust at their core. Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #225 Broadcast date: 5th March 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guest: Emma Clarke, Chief Operating Officer, Mable Increasingly, big tech companies are playing the role of advocate on behalf of their small business users. Some even have branches dedicated to governance and ensuring the data is aggregated, safe to share and presented so policymakers can read it as a reflection of what matters most to small businesses. There are some tech companies who use their data for the power of good. They use it to support advocacy efforts that shape policies to ensure the views of their small business customers are well-represented both directly to the Government and through organisations like COSBOA and industry associations. However, some tech companies only use data to further their corporate bottom line. Unfortunately, this is a practice that happens worldwide. So, how do policymakers tell the difference? Should big tech and its data be the advocate for small businesses? Especially when the sector can not produce data themselves. And where do the big four consulting firms fit into this picture? Today, Emma Clarke, the Chief Financial & Operations Officer for Mable, joins us to discuss how Mable supports small business owners in the care and support sector. We will explore how Mable uses data to ensure that its business decisions and advocacy efforts align with its platform users' needs, wants and preferences. PEOPLE – Tell us about how this small tech start up and been so successful? When it Why does a company like Mable find itself in this position of being an advocate for contractors? In a practical sense, how do you do this and why? POLICY – What sort of an influence does big tech have in policy? Were you surprised by this and how did you prepare the organisation to grow in this direction? In which areas of policy do you have the most impact and with which organisations do you collaborate with to improve the landscape for your small business members? PURPOSE How do you balance profitability and sustainability with the expectation that big tech has a role to play in social licensing and social responsibility these days? Emma has a Bachelor of Business from Monash University and is Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) qualified. She held executive roles at Redbubble Group, ANZ's Technology Division and Diners Club Australia. Emma ensures sound financial management and continuous improvement in all systems, processes and people development at Mable. She's also responsible for our high-quality customer service. “It's very rare to have the opportunity to work in a company that is fast moving and high growth, but also full of purpose-driven people working together to enable everyone in our society to remain in their homes whilst living their best life.” Mable is where you can live your kind of independence Since 2014, our online platform has connected Australians looking for disability and aged care support to independent support workers. Emma Clarke is Chief Executive of Weston Park Cancer Charity. The charity has been in existence for 30 years and supports Weston Park Cancer Centre, which serves the population of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. The charity invests in research, facilities and equipment, and also provides care through finance, complementary therapies, and advice.Emma was born on the Manor estate in Sheffield. She went for a bar job on the same day that she interviewed for her first role in the voluntary sector. Her first job was for a disabled children and young people's charity in London. She has risen to Chief Executive through a non-conventional route in that she hasn't been to university. For Emma, leadership is about being real and about being human. She says “relationships are fundamental.” She aims to foster a culture of belonging, of connection, and of pride in the work of the organisation. She believes that part of compassionate leadership is to give people a sense of autonomy and agency. She is mindful of ‘the shadow of the leader' and recognises that her own actions need to be purposeful and sensitive. Part of her role is to make sense for her colleagues of the complex environment in which they operate.Since assuming the Chief Executive role Emma has steered the charity through Covid, the economic crisis and challenging times in the NHS. She says a crisis “cuts through the noise.” Covid compelled her to rely on her values, and through that she gained confidence in her leadership. Now in the middle of the NHS crisis, she is optimistic about the future: she sees a lot of compassion, and she is surrounded by good people. She is committed to amplifying the good.As the Chief Executive of a charity, Emma has to work constructively with her trustees. She says that she doesn't see them as a group of people to report to, but rather a group of peers who are experienced and keen to contribute to the success of the organisation. It's up to Emma to make the most of the opportunity that they represent, by asking for help, asking questions and encouraging constructive challenge.Last year Emma introduced Sarah Markham of Calm-in-a-Box, a wellbeing consultancy, to the charity. The team at Weston Park had just finished hybrid working for almost two years and a hard winter loomed. Sarah ran a series of four sessions designed to support the mental health of the team and help them thrive through difficult circumstances. CALM is an acronym that relates to connection, all of me, energy (let me rest), and motivation. Emma says that often in the voluntary sector people can be so invested in the aims of the organisation that they feel guilty about taking the rest. The CALM programme has given them a language to talk about rest in the context of the work they do.Navigating the charity through the Covid crisis is Emma's proudest work-related achievement. It led her to a renewed focus on the most disadvantaged and marginalised of the charity's clients, as they were affected disproportionately by the pandemic.Emma says she makes mistakes every day, but the important thing “is not to dwell on it.” She says “mistakes happen, they're part of everyday life.” Imposter syndrome held her back for a long time, and she has had to work hard to challenge her limiting beliefs.Emma says an experience that has changed her fundamentally is finding that her and her husband were unable to have children. It's shaped who she is, but also she feels it is something she needs to be open about, so that other women who aspire to senior roles don't assume that they have to choose between children and a career. Jodie Day's ‘Living the Life Unexpected' helped Emma to come to terms with the situation.Emma's self-care regime involves hot yoga, a podcast out on a walk or in the bath, and gardening. And she has joined the National Trust: self-care to her often means learning and putting her brain to use in a...

Raconteuse Miranda shares the bits of writing that didn't quite make it, along with tales of her former life as a sex worker, in a show that's definitely NSFW. Clips performed by Chris Pavlo, Bhavnisha Parmar and Emma Clarke.  Warning: This episode contains strong language and explicit material. Miranda Kane is a comedian, writer, and performer who garners inspiration from her previous career as a sex-worker and her more recent work in organising body positive events. She writes and stars in the Audible sitcom SLAVING AWAY, based upon her ‘utterly mundane life as a dominatrix', which reached number one in the Audible charts and has had its third season recently released. She has also written sex blogs and co-hosts the ‘Good Sex/Bad Sex' podcast for Metro. She is a sex-worker rights activist, raising money for charities which support sex-workers. She takes part in debates and public speaking events to promote the decriminalisation of sex-work, and in 2017 she was a TedX speaker where her ‘idea worth spreading' was that comedy and storytelling can help change the public's opinion of sex-workers to allow them to work in safety and without fear of persecution or prosecution. She currently runs Club Indulge – a range of Body Positive events aimed at providing a safe space for plus size people to enjoy being party animals. Scotland's "Queen of Crime" shares some stonking bits of early writing, including her attempt at a bonkbuster and the short story that prefigured her move into thrillers. Clips performed by: Christopher Kent, Beth Chalmers, Leah Marks, Kenny Blyth, Emma Clarke and Rachel Atkins. Val McDermid has sold over 17 million books to date across the globe and is translated into over 40 languages. She is perhaps best-known for her Wire in the Blood series, featuring clinical psychologist Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan, which was adapted for television starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris. She has written three other series: private detective Kate Brannigan, journalist Lindsay Gordon and, most recently, cold case detective Karen Pirie. She has also published in several award-winning standalone novels, books of non-fiction, short story collections and a children's picture book, My Granny is a Pirate. As well as books she has also written for stage, radio and screen. In early 2017 Val's latest BBC Radio 4 drama series, Resistance, aired to great acclaim. And in the last couple of years, she has returned to writing for the theatre with Margaret Saves Scotland as well as the primetime TV series Traces based on her original idea. Today Zoe speaks to Louise Emma Clarke, journalist, columnist, blogger and author. Listen in today for a varied episode with a great insight into expat life as well as motherhood and Louise's writing.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Louise moved to Dubai when her husband moved there for six months and didn't want to come back! Louise's first son Stanley was born in Dubai. Being pregnant with him gave her a network and made her really start to enjoy living in Dubai. Louise says that she was very lucky in all her pregnancies and births. She felt more scared in her first pregnancy so found she didn't do much research but this changed in subsequent pregnancies. Louise's pregnancies were all quite long and she was induced with all three. Zoe points out that in France they don't even give a due date they just give a month window, which makes a lot of sense. Louise found the hardest time in her motherhood journey was when she went from one child to two. Her circumstances were hard to deal with and it took her time to change the circumstances and get some help. Nannies are much more common in places like Dubai, one of the reasons being that mothers generally have much less of a support network. Before Louise's second child was about to start school her and her husband decided after staying with her mum in the summer that it was the right time to come back to the UK. Louise always uses her own life experiences in her writing, especially in her books. She tries to make her characters more real so that the reader will empathise with them and feels like she can write so much more convincingly about things she has experienced herself.   BEST MOMENTS   “After you have your first baby you throw yourself into learning more about how it all works”   “There's a theory that we all have different gestation times and mine would just go on”   “For a long time I felt displaced and a bit like I had two homes”   “I put myself in the shoes of every character I write to try and make them real”   “I don't want to go for tea I want to go for wine!”   VALUABLE RESOURCES  www.petalscharity.org www.tommys.org ABOUT THE GUEST Louise Emma Clarke IG @mumofboysandmabel www.mumofboys.co.uk Facebook: Mum of Boys and Mabel Facebook: Bargain Buys for Mums and Dads Louise's Book    ABOUT THE HOST Zoe Cresswell Devoted mother of two (and a big hairy dog), UK trained midwife, doula and personal trainer, specialising in pre and postnatal fitness. A film script written with the young Hugh Grant (yes, that one), a TV show about The Sex Pistols and a romcom based on his real-life relationship - just 3 of the top notch offcuts from the writer/producer of the multi award-winning TV drama Unforgotten. Clips performed by: Toby Longworth, Lizzie Roper, Christopher Kent, Leah Marks, Nigel Pilkington, Emma Clarke and Rachel Atkins. Warning: This episode contains strong language. Chris Lang has created over 100 hours of original prime-time television drama since he cut his teeth on established favourites like Soldier Soldier, Casualty and The Knock more than twenty five years ago. Most recently his projects have included Dark Heart – a 6 part series for ITV, The Hook-Up Plan (known as Plan Coeur in France) – a French 8-part romantic comedy for Netflix and Innocent – a 4 part drama whose 2nd series will start filming later this year.  Other acclaimed dramas he's been responsible for include: Amnesia (2004), Torn (2007), A Mother's Son (2012) and Undeniable (2014) which was remade in France in as Quand Je Serai Grande Je Te Tuerai which was broadcast in France in late 2017 to an audience of seven million, But it is for his multi-award winning detective drama Unforgotten, starring Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar, that he is probably best known and after three highly acclaimed series its fourth will hopefully be returning to our screens soon. And she has some very useful advice to writers starting out. Clips performed by: Keith Wickham, Leah Marks, Emma Clarke, Beth Chalmers and Toby Longworth. Emma Kennedy wears many hats. Having trained in and practised law (a hat she then discarded) she has gone on to be an actor, novelist, comedy writer, producer, playwright, presenter, winner of TV competitions and Queen of Lego. Her second book The Tent, The Bucket And Me was turned into TV series The Kennedys. She's written 10 other books, including three for children that feature her character Wilma Tenderfoot. Hear his story, and the worst impressions of Barack Obama and Tom Cruise ever.  Clips performed by: Chris Pavlo, Christopher Kent, Emma Clarke, Lizzie Roper and Beth Chalmers. Alex first worked as an actor as a teenager when he co-starred with Kenneth Branagh in the West End theatre production of Another Country. Since then he has worked continuously in all genres, but is perhaps most well-known as the man behind comedy character Barry From Watford, a regular on Steve Wright's Radio 2 Show, Iain Lee's various radio shows, the Channel 4 TV series Cheap Cheap Cheap with Noel Edmonds, and numerous sell-out live shows and podcasts, the latest of which pairs him with fellow "character" Angelos Epithemiou. He also performs live round the country as the spoof paranormalist from Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights: Clinton Baptiste. As a writer he's written for impressionists Alistair McGowan and Ronni Ancona, for Miranda Hart, Peter Serafinowicz, Watson & Oliver, Ned Sherrin and countless other sketch and comedy shows, as well as creating several pilots for TV and radio shows both as vehicles for himself and for other performers.  Episode show notes and more details:  offcutsdrawer.com/alex-lowe Listen to us on whichever podcast app you prefer:  https://offcutsdrawer.com/insta-links/ or if you don't usually listen to podcasts you can hear all the episodes here: offcutsdrawer.com/episodes/

The lift comes to life and tells the story of how the elevator changed the way we live. Emma Clarke plays the voice of the lift in this cultural history of the elevator. As we step inside, the doors close and the lift starts to speak, telling us its story. Before the lift, the top floor was the least desired and most unhealthy place to live. The lift changed all that and made the penthouse glamorous and desirable. The lift made life immeasurably easier but it also brought many anxieties - about safety and the strange, forced intimacy of the lift car. It's also been a source of inspiration for writers - from 19th century German literature right through to Hollywood. And now the lift is about to undergo a radical shift - as engineers develop a lift with no limits on how high it can go. Step inside, relax, and allow the lift to tell you its story.
