What's up Theology Nerds! Today I'm thrilled to share my conversation with the brilliant Philip Clayton on his new book Science and the Sacred: Beyond the Gods in Our Own Image. This isn't your typical science vs. religion debate - it's something way more interesting! Philip co-authored this book with Claudia Pierce, an atheist religion journalist, creating a beautiful dialogue between theistic and non-theistic perspectives that finds surprising common ground. We explore how their five-year collaboration revealed shared values even as they maintained different views on God. Phil walks us through how modern scientific understanding can coexist with spiritual meaning, challenging both religious fundamentalism and reductive scientism. We dive into questions from both conservative Christians and skeptical atheists who read the book in advance, creating a lively three-way conversation about doubt, faith, and what it means to approach mystery with openness rather than certainty. If you're tired of culture war takes on science and religion and hungry for nuanced dialogue across differences, this episode is your jam! And guess what? Phil's coming to Theology Beer Camp this year, so grab your tickets before May 15th when prices go up! You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube As a scholar, Philip Clayton (Ingraham Professor, Claremont School of Theology) works at the intersection of science, philosophy, and theology. Philip Clayton was my PhD advisor and remains a mentor and friend. The most influential academic text arguing against the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ divine image bearers into the life of the Church is Richard Hays' "The Moral Vision of the New Testament." He has changed his mind and has a new bookdeveloping a theological framework for the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in Christian communities. In this live stream, Daniel Kirk joined me to explore his former professor's evolution on the issue, why it's about time for Richard (and lots of other faith leaders) to say so publicly, and how to think ethically with scripture. Those familiar with Daniel's previous visits to the podcast will know that he has argued publicly for full inclusion based on the logic of scripture for years, even to the point of being denied tenure in evangelical spaces that demand silence. When this new book was announced, I wanted to have him back on to unpack things and hopefully lure more straight allies to find their voice. Did you lose power at some point this summer? Between the gaps in electricity service, sheltering in place, the fires on the West Coast, and the multiple tropical storms hitting in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, people in the US have many reasons to be averting their gaze from the future of our climate. There are, however, a few courageous souls in our institutions of higher learning who persist in imagining what the world will look like a decade or more into the future. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Daniel Kirk-Davidoff, a research scientist at Underwriters Laboratories. He gives us a glimpse into the 2035 climate report from the Center for Environmental Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley - there's actually some good news in there. He also sheds light on the complex choices and gambles that result in rolling blackouts across the US. While record high temperatures battered the world this summer, not every country's electrical grid responded in the same way.

This is a tricky one, especially for those who have a genuine desire to take the Bible seriously. The argument for inclusion that J. R. Daniel Kirk presents, however, is one that I find convincing, and it is the best one of the many that I have read or heard (including by Matthew Vines, Gene Robinson, and others). Richard Hay's compassionate argument against affirmation is also presented. Many podcasts on this topic tend to focus on the emotional aspect of the issue, on the increased risk of suicide among queer teens, etc. I think those have their place, but for many Christians, we simply NEED a good argument about what to do with this stubborn text -- the Bible -- that really does seem to stand against homosexual activity. Daniel presents such an argument. ZEPP FM | Sport psychology for athletes, coaches & future sport psychologists
Daniel Kirk used to play Australian Ruled Football quite successfully – until he injured his ankle during a match, needing several surgeries that unfortunately left him with only 20% range of movement in his lower leg. Ultimately, he wasn’t able to return to his sport. However, he didn’t give up, fought his way back into sports and found a way to be an active athlete and a role model for other people instead. I think it’s safe to say that many of us experience setbacks in life. Some setbacks might be small – some might be massive. I don’t have the right to judge if the setback Daniel had after he injured his ankle was a small or a huge setback – but it definitely made him struggle. But: he didn’t give up. He identified ways how to deal with the new circumstances, how to accept what has happened and how to use this situation to make the next major steps in his life – both, as a person and as an athlete. If you have ever been in a situation where you didn’t know how to react and behave, how you could use it as a stepping stone for your future self, or where you thought: “I’m done – I can’t take it anymore” – then Daniel has some great thoughts and experiences to share with you. I’m grateful that Daniel took his time to answer all of my questions, that he shared how his first athletic career ended and his second career started, how he overcame his inner struggles and what it feels like to be a national team athlete today. This episode is full of inspiration and great advices from an athlete who experienced a career ending injury, accepted his new identity, found a way to deal with his new situation, and started to represent his country at World Championships – and maybe in Tokio 2020, too.

It is an honor to fill in for Daniel and talk some lectionary goodness. We will see how long it takes before Daniel quits his trip and gets me off the show, but for now I am excited. During the podcast I discuss the four lectionary texts for the week and the questions I imagine inspiring my sermonizing...if I was still working in a pulpit. For each of the texts I pulled out some questions that could drive a sermon. Here's a few of them. Matthew 28:16-20 * Where is Galilee today? * Does our worship hold space for doubt? * What kind of disciples are we making? * Where is God with us now? * What is the church's relationship to the kin-dom? Psalm 8 * How does the world become creation? * What are the habits and boundaries that structure space for creativity? * God-spotting. * Eco-stewardship Genesis 1:1-2:4a * Go Keller * Don't conquer chaos, it's where the spirit-filled living happens. This episode is a crossover episode with the Good Doctor Daniel Kirk (of the LectioCast fame). How high was the early church's Christology? Daniel is on this podcast to talk about his new book A Man Attested by God, and answers this very question. This book is a bit oppositional. The Good Doctor is taking on very trendy New Testament scholars and early church theologians around the emergence of a high Christology early in the history of the church. He discusses: Why have these early high Christologies become so popular? What is the place of Jesus' humanity? How did we even end up with these gospels in the first place? And what makes Jesus unique and distinct? Tripp also has three very big concerns about Daniel's book, since Daniel had three very big concerns about Tripp's book (which you can purchase in ebook form for $2.99 along with the HBC Guide to God and End Times...) Who was Jesus in reality? This question should be central for those of us who have our faith in Jesus. In this episode Dr. McKnight guides listeners through the extensive quests attempting to uncover the historical Jesus. What is discovered from these quests? How does the Church need the historical Jesus and how should it interact with the study of the historical Jesus? These questions and more are answered in this episode. Get ready to travel deep with Kirk and Tripp. This non-violent improvisational encounter between the LectioCast's Daniel Kirk and Tripp was recorded at First Baptist Church in Palo Alto before the ClobberCast. They keep Christology crazy as they talk about awkward metaphysics, heretical Sunday School lessons, and some questions Daniel has about Tripp's book: Can you confess "Jesus is Lord" without becoming hierarchical? How do you understand who Jesus was? Wandering cynic sage? or Apocalyptic prophet? If God has to be at least as nice as Jesus, where does this nice Jesus come from? Start getting disturbed again by a homeless dead Jew. Keep the voices in the canon diverse and you are allowed to know them, wrestle with them, and sometimes tell Matthew that he is wrong - but only after you've sat long enough with what Matthew says to be disturbed by it. Remember, "you settle to never settle it, because to settle it would be to be Tatian, and he was condemned a heretic." It's a cross-over podcast explosion! Homebrewed Christianity + LectioCast = zesty nerdiness! In the CLOBBERCAST we tackle all the clobber passages some Christians use against the LGBTQ members of the church. Not only do we end up discussing the pastoral consequences and personal tensions connected to the larger conversation, but Rev. Mixon and Daniel share their own personal and powerful stories. Tripp and Daniel are joined by Pastor Rick Mixon from the First Baptist Church, Palo Alto. Rick has been Senior Pastor of FBC Palo Alto since 2006. Rick Mixon has been serving as an openly gay pastor in the American Baptist church for decades. He brings a barrel-aged-wisdom to the infamous clobber passages and these seemingly new struggles in the church.Previously, he served pastorates at Dolores Street Baptist Church in San Franciso and the First Baptist Church of Granville, Ohio. In addition to his ministerial training, he holds a Ph. D. in religion and psychology from the Graduate Theological Union and worked for many years as a psychotherapist and adjunct faculty at Holy Names College (Oakland), Pacific School of Religion (Berkeley) and Saybrook Graduate School in Humanistic Psychology (San Francisco.) Daniel Kirk has been on a long journey whose first steps came with trying to figure out how to love his gay (non-Christian) neighbor as his straight self. While several of the clobber passages were mere adornments on along the way, a couple put up significant roadblocks. Unsurprisingly, those final roadblocks were cleared in tandem with his parting of ways with Fuller seminary this past year. Daniel is writing an ebook about his journey to becoming an open and affirming evangelical New Testament professor that should be available soon. A fuller treatment is in the works, walking through how we can say yes to the work of God in the lives of our same-sex partnered sisters and brothers, affirm the place of scripture in the church, and say no to the passages that condemn same-sex intercourse. Expect to see Gender, Race, Sex, and Power in 2017. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Learn more about your ad choices. Why in the world are philosophers getting so excited about Paul these days? Well I would tell you the answer but Tripp and Pete decided to do an entire High Gravity class investigating this turn to Paul among political philosophers. Last week the class kicked off with an initial session on the Bible with Daniel Kirk and now in the second session we turn to the philosophers. This podcast includes the general introduction to Paul and the philosophers that kicked off session two. Check it out and think about joining us for the rest of the class. In the second half of this session we discussed Jacob Taubes‘ seminal work The Political Theology of Paul. In weeks 5 and 6 we will do a close reading of Slavoj Zizek‘s The Puppet and the Dwarf: The Perverse Core of Christianity. Make sure you check out our sponsor Deidox Films. Daniel Kirk is on the podcast. The most sensational Theo-Blogger, Homebrewing, Fuller Professor of New Testament, and fellow Wake Forest Demon Deacon [he also went to Duke and UNC Chapel Hill but I forgive him for that... Go Deacs!] is on the podcast with a bunch of topics he's looking to settle with me. We had an amazing local for this conversation... only Orange County's greatest brewery... the Bruery. Not only is the Bruery in my Top 10 list of Craft Breweries but Deacon Brian White is one of their master of the taps. Kirk's previous visits to the podcast include this LIVE one from Mark Scandrette's house party in San Fran with Philip Clayton and a sweet discussion of Easter recorded during Holy Week. Bo and I reunite their bromance in the Homebrewed Bat Cave after some summer vacationing. There were some brews, delicious cigars, HBC Deacon Shout Outs, & two very giggly theology nerds. We had plans to respond to a respond to a bunch of awesome Deacon sent questions...BUT the good Dr. Daniel Kirk got us distracted. Kirk recently blogged about a past episode of TNT “Nerd Out: Leaving Church, Packing Heat, and Metaphysical Violence” and had some pretty serious questions. In his post "Empire & Cross" where he asks: So, my lingering question for the metaphysics of the non-violent, non-coercive God is this: what do we make of the other parts of the story that make Jesus, and Jesus' God, look like those forces of coercive power we otherwise see Jesus repudiating? Are those simply bad readings of the passages in question? Or, do we exercise a revisionist hermeneutic in light of [parts of] the Gospels? Bo and I attempted to respond. We definitely had fun...so much fun I ended up telling a story about explosive bowels. We hope you enjoy it! What one change could you make that would change your life forever? What would it look like to take a vow with friends and make it an experiment this lent? During those 40 days leading up to Easter our deepest need for change won't be addressed by eating fish on Fridays instead of cow flesh or giving up chocolate until Easter. Perhaps what we need is something like the watchfulness Jesus encouraged — or what Gandhi called Experiments in Truth: practices that respect the bodily nature of human spirituality and transformation. (Check out his freshest book for more details) In this special episode you will hear Mark Scandrette lay down the challenge. It was recorded live at my home in preparation for some Lenten experiments with some friends and my high schoolers in confirmation. Just among my friends there are some taking a fast from all critical speaking (including self-directed criticism), meat & alcohol (I'm one of these), gossiping (I would have linked to them but...), and all media (which means they will be behind in the podcast episodes come Easter). Just this past week's time of sharing was pretty powerful example of how much one can learn and change in the right type of community. Any way, I'm sure you can imagine when you hear the conversation. Be sure to check out some VIDEO from Mark's visit here. For more audiological Scandrette check out his first and second visit to the podcast. Then there is the Homebrewed 3D event with Philip Clayton and Daniel Kirk we recorded in Mark's house. What does coming to Jesus look like today? We may not have the answer but we do have a seriously fun and enlightening conversation. During the American Academy of Religion a herd of theology nerds gathered in the home of Mark Scandrette - Jesus Dojo extraordinaire - for some live Homebrewed Christianity podcast fun. Daniel Kirk (New Testament Prof at Fuller Theological Seminary) and Philip Clayton (Philosophical Theologian and Dean of Claremont School of Theology) were our featured contributors but the crowd Deacons who gathered made the entire experience a blast. On top of the podcast we all enjoyed the wonderful food provided by the Scandrette family, the huge bottle of Bullet Bourbon from Rebekah, 3 amazing homebrews from Kirk, and some great questions at the end. We hope you enjoy the live brew. If you dig it you should make plans to join us February 12 at Claremont for John Caputo going 3-D or holla about hosting a show in your own homebarchurch. If you are wise....and of course you are...you should get Kirk's new book Jesus Have I Loved, but Paul? and Phil's freshest The Predicament of Belief.
