Women's Ashes Daily, Only Test, MCG Day 3: Alana King's Ashes. That is the only conclusion, after a final day of fizzing leg breaks and endless pressure, bowling from the Shane Warne Stand end on her way to the honours board. Sophie Ecclestone also had her moment, toiling hard in an outmatched team. It ended with intrigue and a dose of hilarity in front of an even-more-world-record crowd, and now the mighty MCG is home again only to the seagulls. Women's Ashes Daily, Only Test, MCG Day 1: The first women's Test at the MCG since 1949 drew a lot more people than they had in 1949, we're betting, as Izzy Westbury joins Geoff at the ground. With Australia bowling first, their XI was a curiosity, but it didn't matter as Alana King kept doing what she does, revving the ball like a motorbike and perplexing England's batters. All that after Afghanistan's women played their first match earlier that morning, with our TFW crew also in attendance at the Junction Oval. Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma are joined by Zimbabwe's first black cricketer, Henry Olonga, as we ask whether boycotts work in cricket? It's in light of political pressure on England and South Africa to pull out of their matches against Afghanistan's men at next month's ICC Champions Trophy. It's due to the Taliban regime's oppression of women, which includes a ban on playing sport. Olonga, alongside Andy Flower, took a stand against Robert Mugabe's regime by wearing a black armband in the 2003 World Cup game against Namibia. It was to symbolise "the death of democracy" in the country. Henry's been living in exile from Zimbabwe ever since and told the programme the current situation has echoes of 2003 and that the International Cricket Council and international Governments should be the ones making the decision not to play, rather than the players. We also talk to Australia Ashes winner now commentator, Mel Jones, on the role she played on getting many of those women out of the country when the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Mel's also been involved in organising the team's exhibition match which will be played ahead of the opening day of the Women's Ashes Test in Melbourne later this month.Photo: Groundmen hold a large national flag of Afghanistan on the eve of the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup one-day international (ODI) match between India and Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 10, 2023. Season 1, Ep 3: Reloading lost episodes from the early Final Word. This was the show's first engagement with women's cricket, and you can hear how much we've learned since. Down in Canterbury, amid a men's Test series of batting collapses, the only women's Test of their 2015 Ashes series ended similarly. It wasn't one-sided earlier though, with Australia staging a major fightback via Jess Jonassen before England gave up trying to win. Izzy Westbury and Anna Lanning join the show as current domestic players in England and Australia respectively, while Adam swoons over swing bowling and Geoff tries not to rap. It's Story Time, our weekly walk through cricket history via your listener quiz challenges. This week, a special episode recorded after the first day of the first Ashes Test. A little weariness makes for more contemplation, and a lot more being sidetracked. Come for the cricket, stay for the examination of historical conspiracy theories, and a journey through terrible sport team names.
