Marlee Silva is a renowned Australian Rugby League journalist. Her love for the game began practically from the moment she was born, which was just three days before her dad won a premiership with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. As a Dunghutti and Gamilaroi woman, storytelling has been part of Marlee's Indigenous Australian culture for over 60,000 years. So as a proud supporter of the NRLW, it only felt natural that telling stories about women's rugby league is what Marlee was destined to do.But now she's dipped into Longform storytelling to tackle some of the biggest issues within the game. This week Chloe caught up with Marlee following the release of her new documentary: Skin in the Game.Skin in the Game examines the role that Rugby League has played in Australia's history of domestic and family violence and what the sport can do to be part of the solution. Growing up in the Australian country town of Albury, Zarlie Goldsworthy always had a love for any sport she could get her hands on. In fact, it was soccer that she had fallen in love with from a young age. But after moving to the city when she was just 15, she associated burnout with soccer and lost her passion for the game. But it was moving back to Albury that helped her re-find her love for Aussie rules. She was the GWS Giants first draft pick in 2022, and capped off her 2023 season as the Giant's youngest ever club champion. That same year, at just 18 years old, she picked up the League's Rising Star Award. Zarlie is now rounding out her third year of AFLW and is making her presence known across the park. This chat proves that if you have that passion and drive, then you don't need a backup plan. We hope you enjoy it. The Female Athlete Project is excited to announce the 2024 TFAP Awards. These awards are set to amplify, recognise and celebrate Australian athletes' achievements in sports. From age 12, Elle Steele knew she wanted to become a Paralympian. Even better, she knew she wanted to become a Paralympic Gold medallist. At just 17 years old she achieved that dream, representing Australia at the Sydney 2000 Games, and breaking the 400 metres freestyle record on the way. After retiring from swimming, she made the switch to Wheelchair Rugby and became the first female to represent Victoria in the sport. But when injury stopped her competing from sport altogether, neurolinguistics gave her a new lease on life. Elle quickly learnt the power that language can have on one's perception of disability, but also one's sense of self. Now she works as the aptly titled ‘Self Belief Agent', helping others to unlock their potential. This chat demonstrates the power of positivity and self belief and we hope you enjoy it.
