With their debut EP SIS (Soft Is Strong) out in the world, we take a critical look at whether KATSEYE is on the path to success or struggling to make an impact. From dissecting the Dream Academy challenges they faced during their formation to analyzing their debut singles, we unpack why their launch has felt underwhelming. Are they being set up for stardom, or are they facing an uphill battle for relevance? Welcome to a very special episode of Booksmart! This week, we invited athlete and equal pay advocate Lucy Small to interview Chloe Dalton about her new book Girls Don't Play Sport. Girls Don't Play Sport is a fierce manifesto for supporting female athletes at all levels, exploring how we got to this point, and where we need to go next to embrace the untapped potential of women's sport. Chloe is one of Australia's few triple sport elite athletes, and is also the Founder of the [female] athlete project - the fastest growing women's sport platform in the country (just casually). We really hope you enjoy this chat - particularly in light of the Matildas absolutely killing it this week in the Olympic qualifiers!
With the headlines dominated by Lucy Letby, the most prolific child killer in modern British history, Nish and Coco reflect on the proper role for politicians in cases like this. While we crave reassurance from figures in authority, should they resist the urge to wade in with an easy soundbite? Plus we also reflect on the other big story of the week, the women's World Cup final, and ask why it's always men in suits who have to spoil things? With music venues and nightclubs shutting at an alarming rate, Nish and Coco talk to an agent and a DJ about whether the UK's nightlife is in crisis. Do politicians place enough value in the night time economy? Can anything be done to reverse the trend, or is it as a result of our changing cultural habits? Also, why ‘Insomnia' should be Coco's current club anthem of choice, and why newsrooms are enjoying the comeback of the August ‘silly season'. Plus we celebrate some world class swearing, and Nish has some ideas for the new Conservative Party general election slogan.Pod Save the UK is a Reduced Listening production for Crooked Media. Situated in the middle of a wild and beautiful outdoor playground, the town ofSmithers, British Columbia, Canada, rests at the foot of the luminous Hudson BayMountain. The town is located halfway between Prince George and Prince Rupert alongthe 450-mile evergreen-lined Highway 16. Currently, most of the inhabitants of Smithersare of European descent. The First Nations people, notably the Wet'suwet'en, called this land home for thousands of years. Now there are only about 8% of the current population are First Nations people. And even though the entire area of the Bulkley Valley is untamed, wild, andpeacefully scenic, there is another, darker side of the valley. All along Highway 16 arebillboards with the following warning: Girls Don't Hitchhike on the Highway of Tears.Killer on the Loose.Ramona Wilson was sixteen and a member of the Gitxsan nation. She was looking forward to going to a dance with several of her friends on a cool and calm evening in June of 1994, but she never made it to the dance. She simply vanished into the inky-blue twilight.Unfortunately, she's not the only one.Join Cam & Jen as we discuss Ramona Wilson, MMIWG, and the Highway of Tears. If you have any info about Ramona Wilson or any of the other 18 women mentioned in this episode, please call the British Columbia Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.Promo from Murder in My FamilyThanks to the OTCP teamListener Discretion by Edward @OctoberpodVHS. In the wake of the very public emergence of the #MeToo, #TimesUp and #girlstoo movements, the latter that we discussed with our Girls Inc Team, Lara Kaufmann and Dr. Christina Spears, a few weeks back-- women and girls have encouraged to find their voice, claim their power, come out of the shadows and not back down. But with a history of messages that tell women and girls that they need to be perfect, they shouldn't break the rules, they should be quiet and look pretty, take a backseat and downplay their own success to avoid making others feel uncomfortable or be seen as “full of herself,” it's a challenge for many to reinvent what it means to be a woman in 2019. It takes mental strength. We must build mental muscle and get out of our own way if we are going to change along with these important empowerment movements. How does mental strength in women make a difference? What areas, specifically, should we work on? And how does embracing and practicing mental strength as women translate to encouraging mental strength in the girls we love, teach and guide? For these questions and more, we will be interviewing the fabulous Amy Morin, for the 3rd time in the history of the show. Dorit Brauer, award-winning author, artist, owner of Live Your Best Life, LLC, and founder of the Brauer Institute for Holistic Medicine, joins Dr. Bunny to discuss a myriad of wonderfully uplifting things – including her mantra “Happier, healthier, and better every day”! Dorit shares the amazing story of her journey to find out what she really wanted to do with her life, which started with a solo backpacking trip in Brazil, then a move to Tel Aviv! She also tells us what led her to holistic medicine, generational healing (you can rise above 7 generations of trauma!), the journey within, and so much more! Tune in and hear how this amazing woman who truly lives life to the fullest, and how she helps others to live their best life, too! About Dorit Brauer: Dorit Brauer is the author of the award winning book Girls Don't Ride Motorbikes – A Spiritual Adventure Into Life's Labyrinth chronicling her modern day pilgrimage in which she embarks onto a 7,430 mile solo motorcycle adventure across the US. On her journey, Dorit recounts poetic life stories spanning her youth on a dairy farm in Germany, a 10-week solo-backpacking trip in Brazil, the turmoil of living in Tel Aviv, to her most recent chronicles in the United States. As Dorit travels cross-country from labyrinth to labyrinth, these stories are woven together intricately to provide insights allowing the reader to reflect on their own spiritual journey. She is the owner and founder of the Brauer Institute for Holistic Medicine in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. British author Sig Lonegren, says Girls Don't Ride Motorbikes – A Spiritual Adventure Into Life's Labyrinth feels like a gentle overview of alternative thinking wrapped in a “Travels with Charley” (Steinbeck) package. Girls Don't Ride Motorbikes – A Spiritual Adventure Into Life's Labyrinth has been praised as “Life-changing” and “The best book you'll ever read.” Please view book-reviews and road-trip pictures at www.doritbrauer.com The title of the book, ‘Girls Don't Ride Motorbikes,' comes from a mantra of Dorit's youth, embedded into her mind by her father.

Ego Ella May - "Girls Don't Always Sing About Boys" from the 2020 album Honey For Wounds on UpperRoom Records. On her debut album Honey For Wounds, South London-based artist Ego Ella May provides sweet relief from troubling times with her jazzy neo-soul sound. On today's Song of the Day, she asks listeners, "What if I wanna talk about suffering?" “I will, of course, continue to write about love,” May said in an interview withBandcamp. “But I’m also conscious of other things that happen in life, and I like to address them in song form. There are so many different themes on the album that it felt like a diary, even. ‘Girls Don’t Always Sing About Boys’ came about because I was sick of hearing songs about relationships on the radio. I wanted to talk about other things, and at the time I wasn’t thinking about love. Grenfell [the 2017 West London Tower fire that killed 72 people and injured just as many] had just happened, and my mind was awake. I was reading about sustainability and pollution, and training to be a counsellor — I just had lots to think about. I wanted to challenge myself to put it all into song form.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Casey MacKinlay is rarely found on the path of least resistance. After taking up the male dominated-field of bricklaying in her teenage years, MacKinlay was forced to balance her career with the added challenge of becoming a single mother. She rose to the challenge in fearless fashion, with her entrepreneurial drive empowering this indefatigable individual to transcend her circumstances. In this enlightening chat, she discusses her new book ¨Girls Don´t Lay Bricks¨ as well as her journey from ambitious adolescent to accomplished adult. 1:54 The Hero's Journey The multi-business owner´s rise to prominence was an arduous path, and MacKinlay speaks candidly about the challenges she has faced. Her book represents a running commentary on her experiences with the feel of a coherent narrative. The author goes into detail about the process of taking the book from concept to coffee table, stressing the importance of her support network in bringing the project to fruition. She also speaks on gaining a deep appreciation for concise storytelling. During the book´s two year development period. 6:13 Recognizing Opportunity It is said that the best ability is adaptability, and MacKinlay´s formative years cemented in her the situational savvy that has carried her career. She recalls a time during her teenage years when, having just transferred to a new high school, she quickly took note of a widespread fashion trend among her classmates. Making the direct connection between popularity and profitability, she immediately taught herself the skill. Not only was she able to earn income this way, but her newfound talent also gained her considerable influence among her peers. 7:42 Surviving and Thriving Despite the demanding physical nature of her work, perhaps MacKinlay´s most debilitating struggle was in escaping an abusive relationship. Just 17 at the time, she met the future father of her child and almost immediately fell pregnant. It was during this vulnerable time that her former partner began to show his true colors, engaging first in emotional abuse. Heavy drinking followed, and the relationship quickly deteriorated. Teaching through the pain, the author details how the lessons she learned shape her current perspective. 16:50 An Abundance of Initiative The thread that ties together Casey MacKinlay´s personal life and professional legacy is an abundance of initiative. In her view, creating our own opportunities is the best way to ensure that we have them. From ingraining herself into the population of a new high school to taking the first step out the door of an abusive relationship, the solutions started with her. Of course, outside perspective is valuable and support networks essential, but in the end we must make the most of our own circumstances. 20:57 Boundaries and Balance MacKinlay makes it clear that success in the entrepreneurial world comes second to her personal fulfillment. Finding the balance between the two took deep introspection and profound clarity about her goals in life. At first, she felt that her position as organizational leader meant being available to clients and colleagues around the clock. Of course, as her son got older, it quickly became apparent that a more nuanced approach was required. The entrepreneur believes strongly that quality time with loved ones is far more valuable than any professional accolades. As a result, her relationships have never been stronger. We love a good inspirational story and Casey's is just that! Casey Mackinlay was a VCAL student with a bricklaying apprenticeship when she became a teenage single mum with no idea what was ahead of her. In this podcast, we'll find out more about her new book, Girls Don’t Lay Bricks. Casey will open up about her personal journey and the life and business lessons she learnt along the way. She was the only female working on a tradie site, having no qualifications in business to now becoming a CEO and delivering motivational talks to high school kids, young mums and aspiring business owners. Her story is nothing short of inspirational!

Liverpool are to submit new planning for a bigger and better version of the Anfield Road end, which would take Anfield's capacity beyond 60,000. Joining Neil Atkinson to react to the news and to look ahead to the visit of Arsenal are Ste Evans, Adam Melia, Damian Kavanagh and Alison McGovern. Also on the show, David Wafer discusses the fundraising efforts for Nathaniel Leahy ahead of The Anfield Wrap's latest live show and Ian Salmon chats about his new play Girls Don't Play Guitars.
