With 70 Caps and 35 International Goals to her name, Sarah Walsh is one of the most formidable Matildas to ever play football for Australia. Sitting 5th on the All-time Matildas’ goal-scorers list, Walshy was as much of a weapon off the field as she was on it. Serving as a long-time member of the Professional Footballers Association and playing a pivotal role in helping the Tillies secure their first Collective Bargaining Agreement back in 2010. In that same year, she also lifted the Asian Cup and now, 16 years later, is working as Chief Operations Officer at the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup as the Tillies try to lift that iconic piece of silverware once again. For the first 20 years of her career, Haz Burbidge-Smith was an avid BMX rider – winning multiple world and Australian Championships, with her focus set on fulfilling her Olympic dream. But then she discovered her true passion – Mountain Bike Riding - and hasn’t looked back since. But in 2024, Haz suffered what she thought was a broken hand, which later turned out to be a broken hand, neck and wrist. Lucky to be where she is, Haz has since been on an incredible journey to get back on the bike and return to the competitive slopestyle scene. Haz opens up about choosing a sport for fulfilment rather than societal expectations, learning to embrace her fear to take on gnarly tricks, and her emotional journey back on the bike just 6 MONTHS after surgery. This weekend, Haz will compete in Crankworx Christchurch as a wildcard, out to show herself and her fellow riders why she deserves a spot on tour. After making the switch in her early twenties, Emma never looked back - going on to win two World Cup events and qualify for her first Olympic Games. While the 2021 Olympics, which included a top 10 finish, were one of the highlights of Emma’s career, they also proved some of the hardest times of her life - with the comedown from the games ultimately teaching her how to ask for help when she needed it most. Shyla Heal debuted in the WNBL at just 14 years old. In the decade since her debut, she’s gone on to play for five clubs in the Australian Women’s Basketball League, including the championship-winning Townsville Fire in 2023. But one of the biggest moments of Shyla’s career came when she was drafted by the Chicago Sky in the 2021 WNBA Draft. Shyla played just four games before being traded and waived from the roster in the most brutal of ways. But now she’s using it as motivation to one day return to the World’s Best Women’s Basketball league. Lizzie Welborn’s story begins quite differently to other female athletes. Growing up, she wasn’t sporty and sport wasn’t a big part of her childhood. That was until age 10 when she started surf lifesaving. From there, her competitive spark was lit, and by age 16 she was competing in the professional Australian Ironwoman Series, making her one of the youngest athletes in history to qualify. This week Chloe sits down with Australian Ironwoman Lizzie Welborn. Lizzie opens up on the pressure of expectation after finding success so early in her career, and how she battled with body confidence and restrictive eating along the way. Situated in the middle of a wild and beautiful outdoor playground, the town ofSmithers, British Columbia, Canada, rests at the foot of the luminous Hudson BayMountain. In the wake of the very public emergence of the #MeToo, #TimesUp and #girlstoo movements, the latter that we discussed with our Girls Inc Team, Lara Kaufmann and Dr. Christina Spears, a few weeks back-- women and girls have encouraged to find their voice, claim their power, come out of the shadows and not back down. But with a history of messages that tell women and girls that they need to be perfect, they shouldn't break the rules, they should be quiet and look pretty, take a backseat and downplay their own success to avoid making others feel uncomfortable or be seen as “full of herself,” it's a challenge for many to reinvent what it means to be a woman in 2019. It takes mental strength. We must build mental muscle and get out of our own way if we are going to change along with these important empowerment movements. How does mental strength in women make a difference? What areas, specifically, should we work on? And how does embracing and practicing mental strength as women translate to encouraging mental strength in the girls we love, teach and guide?
