After years of dominating American rock in the early 90's, Grunge was replaced in 1994 by a new musical movement coming out of the California Bay Area: Pop-Punk. And leading the way was the Berkley band, Green Day, whose third album, Dookie, went to the top of the charts and even won them a Grammy. On this show, our specialty is sequels, sequels, and more sequels.  From the good ones, to the bad ones, to the really ugly ones, we'll be covering them all!  We've got homicidal maniacs that won't stay in the grave, sci-fi epics whose stories cannot be told in a single tale, and much much more.  For our 29th episode, we'll be taking on the wacky and wild 3rd chapter in the Basket Case series with "BASKET CASE 3: THE PROOGENY" from 1992. This film is once again written and directed by genre great Frank Henenlotteer (Basket Case 1-3, Brain Damage, Frankenhooker) and stars Kevin VanHentenryck as Duane Bradley once more, and co-stars Annie Ross as Granny Ruth. This sequel finds our Bradley twins, Duane and the monstrous Belial, picking up right where part two left off with the two of them not on the greatest of terms. This time however, Belial is about to be a daddy! And they're going to need a bigger basket. Get ready to join our hosts Cameron Scott and Dustin Hubbard (Howling At The Full Moon) as they dissect and take a deep dive into a world filled with Bradley twin shenanigans, a Casey (Beverly Bonner cameo), freakishly fantastic kills, Jolt Cola product placement, sing-a-longs, makeshift Transformer mech suits, and more! Enjoy!   "Sewing him back on like that wasn't the answer, Duane."

Every now and again, the horror genre produces a film that becomes a bona fide classic. In 1980, director William Lustig and co-writer and star Joe Spinell teamed up to make what may be the defining film of the 42nd Street grindhouse era: Maniac. The film has it all, a serial-killing protagonist who scalps women while sobbing about his mother, buckets of gore from an early-career Tom Savini, and all the usual suspects of late-'70s Times Square: hookers, drugs, and utter despair. A remake, directed by Franck Khalfoun, written by Alexandre Aja, and starring Elijah Wood, arrived in 2012. This time, the action shifts to Los Angeles and leans more heavily into the mannequins that served as surrogate girlfriends in the original. Does it rise to the occasion and meet its predecessor on its own terms? We dig into that question, and much more, on this Twice Told Tales edition of the show. Films mentioned in this episode: The Avengers (2012), Basket Case (1982), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Fly (1986), Friday the 13th (1980), The Godfather (1972), Halloween (1978), High Tension (2003), Inferno (1980), Jaws (1975), Last Horror Film (1982), Last House on the Left (1972), Maniac (1980), Maniac (2012), Pieces (1982), Taxi Driver (1976), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), The Warriors (1979)

Frank Henenlotter is no stranger to capturing misfits, oddballs, and mutated figures on film, but he always manages to find the humanity in each of them. His unique avant-gutter exploitation cinema has resulted in memorable characters and brutal moments, but he embraces the deadly and unpredictable sides that his creations offer. Duane and Belial, the once-conjoined twins who shocked Times Square in Basket Case (1982), are back in Basket Case 2 (1990). They find a new home in a mansion of misfits, but the press is after them and closing in. Bad Biology (2008) follows a woman with seven clitori and an insatiable — sometimes murderous — sex drive, and has mutant babies moments after the act; her path collides with a man who has an uncontrollable, brain-controlling, drug-addled penis. This is a genuine weird film for those seeking something they've never seen before — or could even imagine exists. Our host Jim Hickcox is joined by filmmakers and film teachers Steve Collins and film Spencer Parsons. Maybe don't listen to this episode at work...
