This week, Amber is joined by guest co-host, Michael Mullins! Michael covers Frank Abagnale, the inspiration for the movie "Catch Me If You Can". Frank Abagnale is now an American security and fraud consultant, but is better known as one of the  most infamous con-artists of all time. It's been reported that by the age of 19, he had cashed $2.5 million in fraudulent checks while using several different identities. It is believed that he assumed no less than eight identities in his short career as a fraudster, including: an airline pilot, a physician, a lawyer, and a professor. He was captured and sentenced in 1974, but was released after serving about three and a half years of his 12 year sentence, on the condition that he would work alongside the FBI to investigate crimes similar to those that he had committed.  But how much of Frank's very public story is true?Sources: www.slashfilms.com / “The Fascinating True (And Not So True) Story Behind Catch Me If You Can” / Shania Russell / August 10, 2022www.WHYY.org / “Catch Me If You Can” / December 31, 2000www.en.wikipedia.org SHOW: Johnny Carson / Episode aired October 4, 1978SHOW: To Tell the Truth / Episode aired in 1977www.youtube.com /Talks @ Google "Frank Abagnale"/recorded November 27, 2017Podcast – Most Notorious / Episode 198: “Catch Me If You Can's Frank Abagnale - Perpetrator of the Ultimate Hoax? / with Alan C. Matthew was a student at Bethel High School in 1983, and he delivered a speech to roughly 600 of his fellow classmates nominating his friend for student body vice president. Matthew's speech resulted in a suspension and being removed from the potential list of graduation commencement speakers. So Matthew did what any normal teenager would do, he took the school district to court. Sources:www.famoustrials.comwww.law.cornell.edu / "Bethell School District No. 403, et al., Petitioners v. Steven Robards was in rough shape. He'd been perfectly fine just hours earlier, but suddenly, the 38-year-old man's arms and legs went stiff. He couldn't swallow. His mouth foamed. By the time paramedics arrived at Steven's apartment, there was little they could do. Steven died, apparently from a heart attack. For his daughter, Dorothy Marie Robards, his death was yet another tragedy in her already tumultuous life.  Then Kristin tells us about a high school student named Matthew Fraser, who caused a stir when he gave a hilarious, innuendo-laced speech to his fellow Bethel High School students. During a school assembly with nearly 600 students present, Matthew nominated his friend for student body vice president by telling them that his friend was “rock hard -- he's firm in his pants, he's firm in his shirt, his character is firm -- but most of all, his belief in you, the students of Bethel, is firm.” The school administrators were not amused. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Bethel School District v. Fraser,” FamousTrials.org “FIRE Starters: Bethel School District v. Fraser,” by Foundation for Individual Rights in Education on YouTube “Bethel School District v. Fraser,” entry on Wikipedia “Matthew Fraser speaks out on 15-year-old supreme court free speech decision,” by David Hudson for the Freedom Forum Institute In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Poisoning Daddy” by Skip Hollandsworth, Texas Monthly “Marie Robards: Deadly Daughter” by DeLani R. The Wright State softball team’s most impactful player hasn’t appeared in game this spring. But she's still made a significance difference on the Raiders. Emma Bush, a junior at Bethel High School in Tipp City, played softball most of her life until she was sidelined with a broken wrist and was unable to walk after her surgery. Bush was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. “I feel like I’m on a team again, and it’s such an awesome experience,” said Bush. Last November, Bush signed an official contract and national letter of intent to join the Wright State softball team through Team Impact, which places courageous kids with collegiate athletic teams. “Having Emma here has been great for our team,” Alexis Mayle, a junior who plays first base. The Raiders, who are 33-20 overall and in first place in the Horizon League, close out the regular season at home May 6-7 versus Valparaiso.
