Asking God for our “daily bread” is a petition for him to fill our physical and spiritual hunger. Fr. Mike breaks down this simple yet profound petition that reminds us of our reliance on God for all our needs. In this part of the Lord's prayer, we turn to God with childlike hearts, trusting that he will nourish us with all the appropriate material goods and, above all, with the Eucharist. In this inspiring new episode of The 1 Girl Revolution Podcast, listeners are introduced to the incredible Jennifer Jackson, founder of The DRE Project - a nonprofit organization that delivers home-cooked meals and groceries to individuals and families in need.  Jennifer founded The DRE Project in honor of her sister, Andrea, who passed away but who was (and still is!) a beacon of light to the world. Jennifer wanted to do something to honor her sister's legacy and after she began delivering meals to individuals and families in need during the COVID lockdown – she decided to turn those deliveries into something bigger and honor her sister in the process. And that's how The DRE Project was born.  Jennifer is an example to all of us that we can all do something to make a difference in the world. Jennifer's dream job as a kid was to work with her dad's pizza business (Hungry Howies) and while she achieved that and still works there to this day, she wanted to do more and help others – which started out as buying meals for others and now has turned into this incredible nonprofit mission. We can all do something to make a difference in our communities and in the world.  In this episode, you'll hear:  Jennifer's life story and how she got into the business of pizza; About Jennifer's life and career; How Jennifer started feeding people in need during the COVID lockdown; About Jennifer's sister Andrea and how The DRE Project came to be; Stories of people who have been helped by The DRE Project; And so much more.  Listen and Subscribe: Don't miss out on this incredible episode! Sacramento's X Street Navigation Shelter progress and setbacks for those unhoused. What we know, and don't know, about the El Niño winter forecast. Is this year's wildfire season over? The 30th Annual “Run to Feed the Hungry.” Sacramento's X Street Navigation Shelter It's one of Sacramento's busiest homeless shelters and while there has been some success in connecting people with housing options, there's still room for improvement. CapRadio Homelessness and Housing Affordability Reporter Chris Nichols joins us for an update on the X Street shelter and the significant barriers that still keep people from finding a permanent, safe, place to live.  We will also learn about a new seasonal shelter that has opened in Elk Grove. El Niño Winter Forecast The forecast this winter is that El Niño is making a comeback, a weather pattern associated with wet weather and flooding. But it's not that simple or predictable. According to the NOAA, El Nino dates back to the 1600s, when South American fishermen noticed periods of unusually warm water in the Pacific Ocean. Some 400 years later, there is still a great deal we don't know. While some climate models are predicting a “super El Nino” this winter, it doesn't mean we'll feel that impact in Northern California. Dr. Paul Ullrich, Professor of Regional Climate Modeling at UC Davis, explains how big of a role El Niño plays in predicting wintertime precipitation in California. Is Wildfire Season Over? You might think this year's wildfire season is a closed chapter. But history would caution otherwise. Tomorrow marks five years since the Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. And in Southern California, the 2017 Thomas Fire is among one of the largest and most destructive in state history. They are sobering reminders that wildfires can defy seasons and be year round. Craig Clements, Professor and Director of the Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center at San Jose State University and joins us with a clearer picture of where things stand so far this year. 30th Annual ‘Run to Feed the Hungry' is the largest Thanksgiving Day fun run in the country, and the largest annual fundraiser for the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services. This year, the Sacramento tradition returns for its 30th year, and a goal of 30,000 participants. Blake Young, President and CEO of the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services gives a preview of the 30th annual run taking place on Nov. 23, and how it will support those in the Sacramento region facing hunger and food insecurity.

The film is about two struggling drag performers in New York City whose ride-or-die friendship is tested when one of them moves to Philadelphia to be with his boyfriend.  Todd talks about why he wanted to explore the theme of gay friendships, having virtually no experience in drag before making the movie, what it's like to direct yourself in sex scenes and how his making the film grew out of the frustration he was feeling as an actor in New York. He also talks about how he made such a visually-striking, self-assured film with only himself and two other crew members; his brother Brendan as cinematographer and his sister-in-law on sound. Other topics include: his favorite film festival memories, why he chose to make his character Judy a occasionally irritating hot mess rather than a likable every gay, the entrepreneurial hustle of being a filmmaker, living in Provincetown year round, going to a taping of Saturday Night Live, appearing with Marisa Tomei and Bill Irwin in the upcoming film Best Place and P-town fox that was so desperate to be in show business that he crashed the set. Read Mark 6:30-44. Mum's picnics were legendary affairs. I remember a battered, old green hamper that came out, with proper China plates and silver cutlery. There were beautiful sandwiches, crisps (which were a treat in those days!), other snacks, cake, and fruit. Each one was an event! Mothers are generally loving, caring, and feeling people. They want to look after every aspect of their children's lives. Likewise, Jesus provides this picnic to 5,000 men and their women and children, not because he wanted them to believe in him, not because he had something to teach them, but simply because “he had compassion on them” (Mark 6:34). He saw they were lost, straying from God and in grave danger, “like sheep without a shepherd”. He was deeply moved, and like a mother, simply had to do something about it. He could have sent them away, of course. But like a mother, Jesus is concerned with every aspect of our lives – the physical as well as the spiritual. But as well as meeting their physical needs, Jesus did have something to teach his disciples. It's a lesson we must learn too. When his disciples point out the problem of a large crowd in a remote place, late in the day, needing something to eat, Jesus' response must have astounded them: Mark 6:37 NLT But Jesus said, “You feed them”. “With what?” they asked. “We'd have to work for months to earn enough money to buy food for all these people!” It is a command we cannot afford to take lightly. Jesus' compassion for the hungry is such an important lesson that it's one of those rare events that is recorded in all four gospels. For people who are desperately hungry, there is no better way to show God's love than simply to feed them. As the consequences of the current global pandemic continue to unfold, I suspect there may be many opportunities to meet people's physical needs as well as their spiritual ones, in the name of Jesus, who likewise as compassion on them. If my Mum could supply a feast of a picnic, may I do the same to those who most need God's love. Think It OverThink about the following: •           What excuse might you be tempted to make when God calls you to do something about the human needs in your community?

Feeding The Hungry: Who is Helping? Changing The World has a lot to do with Feeding the Hungry, as in keeping the population fed. Today's guest has a passion for those in need. Natasha Pernicka is the Executive Director at The Food Pantries for the Capital District, Inc. in Albany, NY. Her passion is evident. The power of working together in coalition, The Food Pantries for the Capital District strives to fill the gaps to make sure pantry shelves are full and people in need have nutritious food on the table. Note this is New York State related: Imagine trying to feed yourself on $4.50 a day. Without cheating. For most of us, that's coffee and a treat. If you're dependent on the monthly SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, that $4.50 average daily allotment tends to run out by the third week. Take the “SNAP challenge” to experience why people living in a chronic food emergency often opt for cheap calories rather than healthful food. But for many, the emergency doesn't end. 43,500 people visit Capital District food pantries annually. However, according to Feeding America, more than 80,000 people—including 23,000 babies and children—in our region are food insecure, which means they lack access or resources to provide healthy food on a consistent basis. That's one in 10 citizens. We break down what the Food Pantries actually do, where the food comes from, and talk about volunteering, among a variety of topics. Join co-hosts Enrique Alvarez and Kristi Porter as they sit down with the two for a fascinating discussion on why there's more than one definition of poverty, what led Julie and Roger to Feed the Hungry, the importance of fortified foods - and how the organization is going above and beyond to feed the poor and hungry while empowering the church. This episode was hosted by Enrique Alvarez and Kristi Porter. “Send them away, that they may go into the surrounding country and villages and buy themselves bread; for they have nothing to eat.” But He answered and said to them, “You give them something to eat.” Mark 6:36-37“And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.” So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” Acts 3:4-6People are starving - They are starving all over the globe, they are starving because they have no spiritual food. Jesus is the Bread of Life.Do you know that some of the poorest, starving souls that I have ever met have been rich people whose trust and hope are in their worldly possessions, and they are literally falling away.Like never before in the history of this tired old world, people need food but not so much physical bread but rather the Bread of Life Himself - They need Jesus. You know, when we took that 20-ton Mercedes Benz truck called The Seed Sower into Central Africa, bright yellow, to the unreached people groups in the most Northern parts of Zambia and Tanzania, we took three things with us: We took food, we took clothes and we took Bibles to the poorest of the poor.I remember at those meetings, preaching at night with floodlights up, there was such expectancy. These little children, some of them hardly had any clothes on, they would hang on every word that was spoken out of the Bible through our interpreters. At the end of the meetings we would bring out the food and they were so grateful. We would bring out the clothing, they loved the clothes... And then lastly, we would bring out boxes and boxes of Bibles - I want to tell you the people went into a literal frenzy, I will never forget it. That 20-ton Mercedes Benz truck was rocked to and fro.At the one meeting, I said to my nephew, Fraser: “Take a box of Bibles and go to the other side of the field to get the crowd away from the truck.” The last I saw was him disappearing into a cloud of dust with people running after him - The Bread of Life! People need food and you and I have the answer, His Name is Jesus Christ!Today, let us feed the hungry with the good news of the soon-coming King of Glory!Have a wonderful day.God bless you and goodbye.

Al Kocourek runs Feed the Hungry San Miguel (de Allende, MX). He has taken this organization from a struggling, bloated and ineffective group to a successful non-profit that has served over 11 million meals to people in need over the years. He discusses how they have done this with little to no assistance from the Mexican government. An example of what can happen when government gets out of the way of good people with big hearts so they can use their skills to do some great work for their communities. Eye opening and very interesting. Enjoy! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

The group is back together! Andy, Brandi, Kaitlyn, and Ben break down a couple different questions from listeners - first, they deal with the context of what "he who does not work shall not eat" means, and Brandi throws out some Greek translation off the top of her head. Then, someone who can't make it to church on Sundays because of work asks what to do about their predicament - where should their loyalties lie? Ask us a question, or respond back to the podcast!
