Pogačar out…what happens now? Vuelta a España Rest Day Wrap Up

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP Well, I don't think anybody expected that to happen… Guys, welcome along to this rest day special episode of the Race Communiqué. I'm joined by Luke Durbridge - getting his last few days of relaxation in before heading across to Canada - to wrap up everything we've seen in an absolutely crazy first week at La Vuelta.  Of course, how could we not discuss the biggest news of the race…and maybe even the season: Tadej Pogačar has crashed out of La Vuelta! After absolutely dominating the first week of the race, the Slovenian superstar hit the deck at high speed on stage eight and suffered a concussion, a fractured collarbone, and a fractured vertebrae.  That is a pretty serious list of injuries for Pogi, and casts a lot of doubt over the rest of his 2026 season. Here's hoping that he can get fit and healthy again and get back to racing when he's ready.  With Pog out, the race really has been turned on its head. Mas has moved into the race lead, and all of a sudden there are opportunities for all sorts of riders to potentially win a grand tour.  Once Durbo and I recap the race so far, we get a special voice note from the big man - Tom Southam - on his way back from driving the EF Team car for the first part of La Vuelta. He gives us his take on Pog's crash and what that means for the race.  As sad as Pog's departure is, the race continues without him. It's a cruel sport, hey? How is the rest of this year's Vuelta going to play out? Will we see any more big surprises? Who's going to win? We discuss all this and more on this special rest day Race Communiqué. Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros. Stage 9 takes the race 187.4km from La Vila Joiosa/Villajoyosa to Alte de Aitana, Costa Blanca across a mountain stage that has an elevation gain of 4,945m. With Movistar team rider Enric Mas holding the red jersey following yesterday's events, will he be able to maintain his position? The peloton face six categorised categorised climbs, with more elevation than any other stage, and a summit finish at the Alto de Aitana in this stage of the Vuelta a España. Ned Boulting and David Millar provide an update into Tadej Pogačar's injuries and also break down the latest stage of the Vuelta a España, which had a beautiful ebb and flow throughout the race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Vuelta has turned completely on its head. Stage 8 was supposed to be a relatively straightforward 171km run from Puçol to Xeraco, but with 32km still to race, everything changed when race leader Tadej Pogačar went down hard in the middle of the peloton. Pogačar, who had held the red jersey since winning the opening time trial in Monaco, was left sitting on the road as the race doctors and UAE team staff attended to him. With deep cuts to his left shoulder and face, he eventually left the race in an ambulance with his arm in a sling, bringing his Vuelta to a sudden and dramatic end. It's Pogačar's first abandonment from a Grand Tour and his first DNF since 2023, and it completely changes the shape of the race. Enric Mas takes over as the new race leader, although the Spaniard chooses not to wear the red jersey on the podium out of respect for Pogačar. What does this mean for the Vuelta podium, and what does it mean for Pogačar's goals of winning the big 3? Ned Boulting breaks down Stage 8 of the Vuelta a España. --------------------------------------------

Pogačar is making this Vuelta look very difficult for everyone else. Stage 6 takes the race 177.5km from Alcossebre to Castelló, with a punchy route that builds towards a brutal finale, including a gravel section with gradients reaching 20%. And, once again, the red jersey decides he wants to race it like a one-day Classic. With UAE driving the pace and the break beginning to disappear, Pogačar launches his attack on the final climb and quickly opens a gap over the rest of the GC contenders. He hits the gravel alone and starts pulling away, but Enric Mas refuses to let him disappear. The Spaniard produces a huge chase and eventually makes contact with Pogačar near the top. The two then work together over the final kilometres, with Mas putting himself in position to move into second overall. But there is a heart-in-mouth moment on the descent as Pogačar runs off the road after misjudging a corner, coming to a complete stop before getting back on his bike and rejoining Mas. Pogačar still has enough left to beat him in the final sprint and claim his third stage victory in just six days.  We get into Pogačar's attack, Mas' brilliant fightback, the chaos of the gravel and that near-crash on the descent, before looking at what another victory means for the GC race. Ned Boulting and Pete Kennaugh break down Stage 6 of the Vuelta a España. ---------------------------------

Matthew Brennan is having some Grand Tour debut. Just two days after taking his first Vuelta stage win, the 21-year-old Visma rider does it again in Roquetes, producing another brilliant sprint to make it two stage victories from the first five days of his first three-week Grand Tour. Stage 5 takes the race 173.3km from Falset through the Costa Daurada and into the Terres de l'Ebre, with strong winds making for a nervous day and several splits in the bunch. Ethan Hayter finds himself on the wrong side of one of those echelons before fighting his way back into contention and eventually taking maximum points at the intermediate sprint. The finale looks set for a chaotic sprint, but Visma have Brennan perfectly positioned. Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte deliver a superb lead-out, putting Brennan in exactly the right place for the final few hundred metres. Jordi Meeus and Vincenzo Albanese come closest, but Brennan finishes the job to claim another win. We look at Brennan's remarkable start to the Vuelta, the strength of that Visma lead-out, Hayter's eventful day and what the result means for the race as Pogačar continues to hold a commanding lead in red. Pogačar has just put some serious daylight between himself and the rest of the Vuelta field. After yesterday's stage was wiped out by the weather, the race gets straight back into the mountains in Andorra, with just 104.8km on the menu but more than 2,800 metres of climbing. And it turns into another statement ride from the world champion. Pogačar attacks on the Collada de Beixalis with the race already being blown apart behind him. He then keeps extending his advantage over the final climbs and descents, eventually arriving in Andorra la Vella completely on his own to take the stage by 2:39. Behind him, the fight for the remaining podium places is much closer, with 20-year-old Jarno Widar taking second ahead of Félix Gall. Primož Roglič finishes seventh on the stage but moves into second overall, while Enric Mas, Sepp Kuss, Oscar Onley and Richard Carapaz all remain within striking distance of the podium. We look back at Pogačar's latest show of strength, the battle behind, and what a three-minute lead this early in the Vuelta means for everyone trying to stop him. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP La Vuelta a España is almost upon us! That's right, it's almost time for the last Grandy of the season - and my favourite! In this month's Race Communiqué Luke Durbridge, Tom Southam, and I are picking apart the route, looking down the startlist, and previewing what promises to be an absolute scorcher of a race.  Of course, the headlines around this year's edition of La Vuelta are dominated by the presence of some Slovenian kid called Terry Pogačar…or something, and it's fair to say he's going to be the out-and-out favourite. But that doesn't mean we're in for a three-week snooze fest, oh no. Guys like Richard Carapaz, Felix Gall, Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert, Matt Brennan, and heaps more absolute hitters are showing up to make this a Grand Tour that you do NOT want to miss. Kicking off in Monaco, the 2026 Vuelta Route takes the pelo down through Andorra and into Spain, with a huge emphasis on the southern part of the country. That means two things: ripping hot temperatures and disgustingly tough climbs. In fact, this year's route has almost 59,000 meters elevation total - almost 10,000 more than the Giro!  We go through the course stage by stage and pick out some of our favourites that you're gonna want to sit down and watch. As you know, I have a real soft spot for the Vuelta, and I think the organisers must have been listening to us yarn away on the pod about what stages we want to see in the grand tours, because there's some absolute bangers in there.  After the Vuelta preview, we turn to Luke for this month's PeloChat. Durbs has done some serious digging for this ep, and is looking into what it takes to scout out new and upcoming talent. With a bit of an explainer from our old mate Michael ‘Heppy' Hepburn, now working for Red Bull - BORA - Hansgrohe, this is a really great insight into how the biggest teams are finding the superstars of tomorrow.  Southam's talking tactics takes a look at La Vuelta and asks: does it really need to be three weeks long, or could it be shorter? What would a two week grandy look like? Would it be better racing? It's something that comes up for discussion every time the Vuelta rolls around, and Southam's got one hell of a take on it.  You know the drill by now; as always, we wrap things up with a Vuelta-themed CommuniQuiz. Southam's on the mic as Quiz Master this month, trying to catch me and Durbo out with some pretty sneaky Spanish stats. Guys, crack open a crisp Cerveza, order some tapas, wake up from your siesta, and get ready for this year's Vuelta! I can't wait, and I hope this episode gets you fired up and ready for a real fiesta of a race.  Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! All for less than a decent gel.Show notesJosh Kerr, the Commonwealth Games, a stitch explained, the Tour de France Femmes, and yet another South African schoolboy rugby doping ban. In today's show:(00:00:38) We joked before Glasgow that this might be the last Commonwealth Games we ever see, and we were wrong. They survived in a cut-down, ten sport form, with India in 2030 and interest from Nigeria and New Zealand for 2034. We debate whether a smaller, cheaper games is actually the point rather than the problem, and what it means that the BBC's sub-one-million-pound bid was rejected, leaving Josh Kerr's mile watched by 200,000 people when Eilish McColgan's 10,000m in 2022 drew six million.(00:02:37) The performances, including Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon running 9.83 in apocalyptic rain, three women under 11 seconds, and Josh Kerr's utterly dominant 3:54 mile off a jogged first kilometre. With the fastest mile in history relative to his peers and a devastating kick, how does anyone actually beat him now, and will the 1500m world record follow? Kerr says he is flying a little close to the sun, and we explain why staying in world record shape is like sitting in the death zone on Everest.(00:24:13) Laura Muir crossed the line 16th and collapsed after a stitch at 3km, so what actually causes one? We go through exercise related transient abdominal pain, the old diaphragmatic ischaemia theory, the newer parietal peritoneum irritation explanation, why shoulder tip pain is referred pain, and the risk factors including drinking before you run, being younger, being female, and having weaker trunk muscles.(00:33:56) Ingebrigtsen returns at the Euros over 5000m off two disrupted seasons and Achilles surgery, and we're not sure it'll be the comeback people hope for.(00:44:52) The Tour de France Femmes is brewing into a genuinely great race, with time gaps after the time-trial necessitating attacking racing as the Tour heads into its hilly and mountain stages. Niewiadoma and Ferrand-Prevot in particular need to claw back big time, while Reuser defends and Vollering waits ominously in pole-position. Instead the world's media is writing about padded bras. Why does cycling always shoot itself in the foot, and why is it a headline for the women when it was an incidental for the men?(00:47:40) Tadej Pogačar's estimated VO2max of over 100 is doing the rounds, using exactly the methods Ross was hammered for using on Contador and Froome fifteen years ago. We explain the modelling, why assumptions can spit out anything between 85 and 101, and what that means for comparing Pogačar to Pantani on Alpe d'Huez.(00:55:56) The full Markéta Vondroušová decision is out, and it reads very differently to the version that had tennis players outraged. Plus a hard look at South African schools rugby, where Deon Botes is the third schoolboy banned in months, this time for a supplement his father allegedly bought for cash from a stranger outside a pharmacy with "ultimate test booster" on the box.(01:12:47) Jannik Sinner walks away from a potential clean sweep of the Masters events to play less tennis before the US Open, while Carlos Alcaraz withdraws from Cincinnati and extends a wrist injury layoff that has now cost him May, June, July, and half of August. Two very different answers to the same question, and one that echoes Josh Kerr's approach to racing.(01:15:00) And finally, an update on Anna's ride around Australia. Nine days, 976km, 7,940m of climbing, one chain change, and three magpie attacks. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP The men's Tour de France is over for another year, and what an epic week of racing we've just seen. Pogačar might have wrapped up the overall victory early on, but some amazing battles for the green, white, and polka dot jerseys, some big shifts in the rest of the top 10 in the final week, and an unbelievable finish in Paris made this a truly memorable edition of the race.  Guys, Durbo's just finished his final Tour de France and is dialling in from a well-earned holiday to join me and Southam for this month's episode of The Race Communiqué where we're wrapping up the 2026 Tour de France.  Of course, we've been dropping weekly wrap-up podcasts on the rest days, so we start this episode by spinning through the last week of racing. Having Southam on board to give us some insight into Richard Carapaz's audacious moves on those brutal final three stages to take two stages and the polka dot jersey is another reminder of how lucky we are to have Tom and Luke take us inside the pelo each month.  A big topic of discussion over the last week of racing was the fans on Alpe d'Huez. Record-breaking numbers of spectators made the pilgrimage to the mountain, and it might have been a step too far. A brutal exit for Einer Rubio after a team car had to brake for a stumbling spectator really highlighted just how sketchy it can be up there, and hearing some of Durbo's war stories from the other end of the bunch is really eye-opening.  Of course, Durbs wrapped up his 12th and final lap of France, and he takes us through the emotions of reaching Paris for the final time.  Durbo's PeloChat takes us inside the seldom-discussed world of the grupetto. We spend a lot of the time focusing on the riders winning the bike races, but the guys at the back are probably suffering even more just to get to the finish within the time cut! Southam's call before the Tour de France about the Mega-Break was spot on, and we saw a few stages defined by absolutely massive moves with tens of riders in. In this month's Talking Tactics, Southam shares the secrets to getting into a breakaway, and just how bloody hard it can be!  Guys, there is a lot to go through in this episode. As is often the case with the Tour, there are so many different stories to follow. Get yourself comfortable Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Become a Supporter of The Real Science of Sport, and for the price of a coffee, or a gel, you get a bonus Applied episode every week, ad-free shows, and the best cycling and running community going over on Discourse.Show notesThis week we recap Tadej Pogačar's record-breaking Tour de France, and then get into the meat of it: why anti-doping leans so heavily on investigation and targeted testing, with insights from our interview with Brett Clothier, head of athletics' Athletics Integrity Unit.(02:24) Tadej Pogačar wins a fifth Tour de France in what Ross reckons is the most dominant display he has seen in any sport, and we dig into the numbers behind it, including an estimated 7 W/kg on Alpe d'Huez that obliterates Pantani's old mark, why the yellow jersey was effectively settled by stage six, and why the racing everywhere else still made it a decent watch.(13:55) The weight-loss double standard. Remco Evenepoel reportedly dropped around nine pounds for the Tour with barely a murmur, while Pauline Ferrand-Prévot's weight loss dominated the coverage last year. We ask why the reaction differs by sex, and where the line sits between periodised, medically supervised leanness and a genuine eating-disorder risk.(19:42) That Montmartre finale, with Van der Poel and Pogačar breaking clear on the last climb, van der Poel's heroic's to hold off the chasing pack, and Jasper Philipsen's remarkable judgement to "win" by not winning against his team-mate. Plus, we ponder whether the GC should really be neutralised so early on the final day? We say let them race.(32:37) The headline this week: why testing alone rarely catches the big fish, and why investigation and targeted testing do. Prompted by the furore over 2am and 5am testing at the Tour, we hear from Brett Clothier of the Athletics Integrity Unit, and explain the biological passport, the micro-dosing of EPO, fast-clearance methods, gene-doping fears, and why a genuinely "transparent" statement about a target test is close to impossible without prejudicing everyone involved.(46:26) A look ahead to the women's Tour de France, the contenders including Vollering, Blasi, Niewiadoma, Ferrand-Prévot and Reusser. With storylines galore, it features the return of a time trial, and French TV figures showing the women's race is closer to the men's than you might expect.(51:48) Are the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow still worth watching without the stars? Gareth is won over by the weightlifting, and we ask whether you really need the very best in the world to enjoy sport.(58:49) The Ultimate Championship, athletics' new 10 million dollar, three-night, TV-first format, complete with a black infield, real-time win probabilities, Mondo Duplantis on stadium DJ duty, and no country quotas. We react, and Ross pitches what he would add to the broadcast(64:16) Josh Kerr reveals how the pacing lights were slowed over the final 100 metres of his mile record to create the illusion he was beating them. Clever theatre, or are we being deceived?(67:00) And finally, Discourse member Ana sets off on a 15,000km "big lap" of Australia on her gravel bike. We wish her luck, and start plotting the data she should share with our listener community!LinksThis is the ITA statement during the Tour - it's really all they can say and expecting more is a day dream! The article on gene doping - speculative and sounds like sci-fi, but might it be happeningThe paper on micro-dosing and detection challengesPlugge on how the tests brought doping back to cyclingPreview of the TDF for WomenDetails on the World Athletics Ultimate Championships Hosted on Acast. Tour de France 2026 Stage 21: Van der Poel defeats Pogačar in epic Paris finale as the Tour comes to a close The 2026 Tour de France concluded with a spectacular finish on the streets of Paris as Mathieu van der Poel edged out Tadej Pogačar after an unforgettable duel over the Montmartre climbs and onto the Champs-Élysées. With the yellow jersey already secured, Pogačar still refused to settle for a ceremonial ride into Paris, attacking once again and producing one final battle that perfectly summed up this year's race. We break down the tactical showdown between two of the sport's biggest stars, how Van der Poel held his nerve to claim one of the most prestigious stage victories in cycling. We also reflect on the wider story of the 2026 Tour de France as Pogačar secured a fifth overall title, putting together another remarkable three-week performance that combined outright dominance with moments of selfless teamwork, including his support of teammate Isaac Del Toro in the fight for the final podium. From breakout stars and unforgettable stages to the biggest talking points of the race, we look back on everything that made this Tour so memorable. And with the men's race now complete, we take a look ahead to Tour de France Femmes. This episode is available ad-free on our Friends of the Podcast feed. Subscribe at thecyclingpodcast.comThe fifth instalment of our wall-to-wall, behind-the-scenes look at Paul Seixas's début Tour de France begins where Seixas's love affair with cycling and the Tour also started, in Magland, just a few kilometres from the stage 15 finish on the Plateau de Solaison. It was indeed an intense and emotional few days for the 19-year-old, as Daniel Friebe reports in this episode. As always, we hear from team-mates, coaches and opponents, as Seixas underlines his credentials as the man most likely to end Tadej Pogačar's reign. Of course no one is any closer to knowing when that will be, or indeed how Pogačar will fall or abdicate.
