At long last, a new deputy federal CIO

Federal CIO Greg Barbaccia has tapped the Department of Education's chief information officer as the government's new No. 2 IT official. Thomas Flagg will take over as deputy federal CIO after spending more than 11 years at the Department of Labor and leading Education's IT shop since October 2024. In an email sent Thursday to agency CIOs and shared with FedScoop, Barbaccia said there was “an overwhelming amount of interest” in the deputy role “from an exceptionally strong field of candidates.” Flagg stood out due to the “depth and seriousness of his experience across multiple technology leadership roles,” Barbaccia wrote, pointing to his time at the Department of Education and DOL. The hiring of Flagg gives the White House its first permanent deputy CIO since September 2025, when Drew Myklegard left the public sector to become Carahsoft's executive director of government programs. Since then, the acting deputy federal CIO position has been held by Jay Teitelbaum, an Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Digital Service and Department of Homeland Security alum. The Trump administration is redirecting a cybersecurity scholarship program that requires recipients to work in government service toward artificial intelligence, leaving some current program scholars dismayed and bewildered. In an email to participating school program coordinators obtained by CyberScoop, the Office of Personnel Management and National Science Foundation said the CyberCorps Scholarship For Service program would now be known as CyberAI SFS. The email reads: “The SFS students we enroll today will not be employable when they graduate in 2-3 years without significant AI background. Any SFS student in this new program must be proficient in using AI in cybersecurity or providing security and resilience for AI systems. Therefore, new students in the legacy CyberCorps program must learn to acquire AI expertise to augment their cybersecurity expertise.” It also explains that “new SFS scholars will not be accepted to the Legacy CyberCorps(C) program without a description on how they will develop competencies at the intersection of cybersecurity and AI.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. U2 is a band from the north side of Dublin that became a global phenomenon-and while its four members have traveled the world over for almost fifty years, some of the most critical points on their journey have been in Southern California. The Joshua Tree is the best-known example of U2's artistic immersion in the Golden State, but the band began drawing inspiration from California's landscape as early as 1981 during their first arrival in the U.S. for the Boy tour. From deserts to beaches to urban streets, Southern California features dozens of sites that are both sacred and significant to U2 history. For the first time, these sites are documented and categorized in a single resource to inform and support the Southern California pilgrimages of U2 fans. I Go There With You (2026) provides the information U2 fans need before embarking on such a quest, whether individually or in groups. Each site has a story, and this book tells those stories-along with must-have details for trips that require extra planning and foresight. In addition to essential information on each site's place in U2 history, author Brook W. Flagg aims to inspire U2's most devoted followers with anecdotes and scrapbooked images. Just as Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. traveled through Southern California along the road from innocence to experience, their fans can find catharsis and healing by going into the mystic portals of the past-places where, over the decades, U2 found pieces of what they were looking for. Cooper Flagg went bananas with 51! That's rad. But we also had 6 out of 9 games end in blowouts, and many with 30-point margins. That's not good. Perhaps we can find an add or two mixed in the piles of dung. The Old Man Squad has a PATREON now. It's $1 and doesn't get a single benefit. We start by dissecting the contenders outside of Hammer's “Trapezoid of Excellence” (Duke, Michigan, Gonzaga, Arizona, Iowa State), diving into how they win and how they lose—including UConn, Kansas, Purdue, Houston, Michigan State, and more. Then we get into a big-picture debate: Is the mid-major Cinderella run officially dead in the NIL + portal era? True or False. From there, it's classic Stripe Sports segments: Sports Scantron: Which Coach Cal freshman guard (Wall, Fox, Tyreke, Acuff) would you trust to lead a title run? Who Would You Rather Have: Cam Boozer vs a gauntlet of college legends (Zion, AD, Edey, Flagg, Banchero & more) Coach Edition: Jon Scheyer vs some of the biggest names in March (Izzo, Pitino, Hurley, Calipari, Painter) We close by identifying 5 non-lottery players who can explode their NBA Draft stock with a big March Madness run—next names up before they skyrocket.
