It’s goodbye for real this time as the boys discuss the controversial animated film that began life as a script by Jacques Tati. American critics generally welcomed Sylvain Chomet’s The Illusionist in 2010. Based on a script by Tati and featuring his likeness, the film earned an Academy Award nomination, several Annie Award nominations and, best of all, a Golden Globe nomination. Purists and members of Tati’s family were decidedly less fond of the film. Jonathan Rosenbaum and Roger Ebert both received emails from one of Tati’s grandchildren calling The Illusionist an affront to his legacy and “a sabotage” of his original script. Tune in to this week’s Reel Rap to hear Shane and Bennett discuss that legacy, wonder aloud about that original script and express mixed feelings about Chomet’s film.
Hey, I hope you are all well and am super happy to have you sharing your time with me today in this 23rd episode of my podcast “Make it YOUR Path”. On the show today is Patrick Chomet. He is the Executive Vice President for Product and Innovation at Samsung who lives in London and works in Seoul in South Korea. Besides his proven track record in many senior global management positions, he is a studied engineer and holds a master’s degree in business administration and management. Patrick talks us through the 3 dimensions his career choices were driven by for a long time: exciting new technology, large scale and a diverse international environment - and how these have changed over time. He shares with us how - being a Senior Executive - he asked himself “Is that it or is there something more that I can do?” and what has helped him to find an answer. We also learn how he handles moments of doubt, which regularly accompany him, and how his definition of success changed throughout his career. How Patrick makes decisions, how he understands his role of being a people manager, what in his life contributes to the feeling of satisfaction & meaningfulness, what he means by “organizational empathy” and many more inspiring insights from his path you will hear in this episode. ***** To date, you've used upcoming opportunities or have arrived where you are now rather coincidentally and would like to change that by finding your individual path? Or you are a manager and it is important to you to offer your high potentials career paths within your company that fit to their strengths and individual goals? As a career and business coach I am happy to support you on this journey. Get in touch for a free initial consultation now and visit me on www.gina-friedrich.com. I’m excited to hear from you!
In episode seven, Chris and Alex encounter ferocious bicycle wheels, music hall stars fishing for frogs using dynamite, and the French mafia in their discussion of the frankly bizarre animated fantasy The Triplets of Belleville (Sylvain Chomet, 2003). With minimal dialogue and an expressionist, borderline surreal visual style, Chomet’s film - released in the UK as Belleville Rendezvous - is erratic, eccentric and downright charming. It offers spectators a journey through early-1900’s France via some ornate painterly backdrops, and an army of grotesque characters (in the mould of cartoonist Gerard Scarfe) that populate this pedal-powered modern metropolis.
Hey everybody! This week, Robbie and Tracy review The Illusionist, a 2010 Sylvain Chomet film, with special guest, digital artist Traci Shepard (@ta_Shepard)! This film tells the story of an aging magician struggling to stay relevant in the burgeoning age of television, one ornery bunny and a Scottish girl who believes his magic is real (even as he experiences crippling debt in the process). Toss in an alcoholic suicidal clown and some lovely backgrounds of Edinburgh and you have... one very French animated movie! Hope you guys dig this one! There aren't many main stories this week because of the high likelyhood of fakery (April Fools was a few days before this recording). But what we DO have was completely submitted by you listeners so thanks for the help! Disney is making another live-action movie off one of their animation properties, Adam West and Burt Ward are Batman and Robin again, there was a music video directed by Sylvain Chomet, and the main conversation is about the difference between a "job" and a "career," prompted by Will Finn's blog post. And, of course, RAPID FIRE! Also, this week I simul-upload to Newgrounds Audio Portal for the first time so if you're a member there give another shoutout! It's Christmas Day, we have had our breakfast of smoked salmon and poached eggs, and I decided I might as well settle down with a bottle of fizz and talk shite on the internet. Given we opened all our presents and had a big meal when my parents were visiting last week, I figured I was obliged to do no more than get pissed and slowly waste away the day today, stopping only to gorge myself on roast lamb and some indeterminate point in the evening - whenever Mrs. Toad gets over last night's hangover I suppose. I am lining up my stupid movies for tonight, as well, because that is all I intend doing this evening: watching intellectually vacant films whilst lolling about on the couch like a beached whale. This, as far as I am concerned, is the True Meaning of Christmas (TM). 01. Stephen Malkmus - Baby C'mon (00.16)02. Sylvain Chomet - L'Illusioniste (05.02)03.
