SEASON 8: The First CrusadeEPISODE 210: “Many Wept For Joy”The road from Arqa to Jerusalem was no stroll in the park, and soon the crusaders found themselves humbled at the sight of Jerusalem…at long last. The anonymous author of the Gesta Francorum wrote, “When they finally saw Jerusalem, many wept for joy.” Despite the great humility each pilgrim experienced upon seeing the city for the first time, they were still denied entry. These walls have never been easily breached, but Antioch had taught these pilgrims many valuable lessons. Each lesson would be put to the test against the holiest city of them all. No More Paywalls! The Messenger ﷺ (S2) The Companions رضي الله عنهم truly understood the status of the Messenger ﷺ. How beautiful were their (رضي الله عنهم) descriptions. al-Bara Ibn Azib رضي الله عنه: “His (ﷺ) hair kissed his shoulders”. Our mother Aisha رضي الله عنها said when the Messenger's ﷺ ears burst through his black hair, it was like two stars emerging from the darkness. When the Messenger ﷺ was ill, the Ansaar رضي الله عنهم wept for they missed when he ﷺ used to sit with them رضي الله عنهم.

It's always good to remind ourselves that God is the main character in the story, not us. We live for His glory.
On Palm Sunday, the crowd celebrated while Jesus wept. In this message, we walk through Luke 19:28–44 and the tension of a King who didn't come to meet expectations, but to exceed them. As Pastor Josh Kelsey unpacks why Jesus wept over Jerusalem, we're invited to examine our own hearts, our expectations, and discover a love that leads not to power, but to the cross.

Message from March 15, 10AM Service.
Friends, this Lent, we've been journeying through some marvelous stories in John: the woman at the well two weeks ago, the man born blind last week, and now the climactic story of the raising of Lazarus. The great miracles of Jesus in John's Gospel are referred to as “semeia” in Greek—“signs.” They're indicators of God's power and manner that teach us great truths about our spiritual lives. And the raising of Lazarus teaches us about the ways of God amid our suffering. Why do these things happen? Why doesn't God act?
"As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, 'If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace - but now it is hidden from your eyes.'" Let's dive right into it: AI might seem like it's got empathy down to a science, but let's not kid ourselves; it's all a simulation. In this episode, Dr. Skinner breaks down how while AI can mimic compassion, it's about as deep as a kiddie pool—no real understanding of human suffering here, folks. We also chat about the church's crucial role in fostering genuine community and embodied presence, especially when people are feeling more isolated than ever. You know, instead of letting a chatbot do the emotional heavy lifting, how about we show up for each other? Jesus wept at Lazarus' tomb, and that's a pretty solid reminder that real ministry comes from being present and sharing in each other's pain. So grab a comfy seat, pour yourself a cup of whatever, and let's explore how we can bridge that empathy gap—because the church has a unique calling to step into the messiness of life, not just observe from the sidelines. In a world where technology often overshadows human connection, this episode delves into the critical conversation surrounding AI's role in empathy and the church's mission to provide genuine presence. Dr. Skinner shares the story of a widow who, feeling isolated in her grief, turns to an AI chatbot for solace. This moment serves as a stark reminder of the loneliness many face and prompts us to question why our communities sometimes fail to provide the support that people desperately need. The discussion highlights the limitations of AI in truly understanding human suffering, contrasting it with the church's potential to embody compassion through real relationships. The episode also touches on the theological aspects of presence, drawing parallels to Jesus' emotional response to Lazarus' death. Dr. Skinner asserts that empathy is not just about knowing the right answers, but about being willing to share in others' pain. This understanding calls the church to action, encouraging it to foster environments where people can truly be known and supported. As technology continues to advance, the church must not shy away from its mission to offer authentic community and care. Practical implications are discussed, including the need for churches to train members in the ministry of presence, address the epidemic of loneliness, and utilize technology to enhance, not replace, personal connections. Ultimately, the conversation is a clarion call for the church to embrace its unique role in a world longing for genuine human interaction.Takeaways:AI might sound empathetic, but let's be real, it can't truly suffer or understand your pain like a human can.The church's unique role is all about genuine connection and community; we can't let technology take that away from us.Loneliness is a growing problem, and we need to step up as a church to provide real relationships, not just digital interactions.Training in the ministry of presence is crucial; we need to learn how to genuinely listen and connect with others in their suffering.Links referenced in this episode:amazon.comThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacyOP3 - https://op3.dev/privacy

How essential is it that we see Jesus weeping and angry being “deeply moved?” What does this say about his love? Isn't it interesting that knowing Jesus wept doesn't make him less powerful, but instead more so? What happens to us when we suppress emotions? What value is given to our emotions when we see Jesus feeling?

Al, Zach, John Luke, and Christian reflect on a moment when Phil, a man who rarely got emotional, was moved to tears after witnessing the reality of unimaginable evil. The guys launch into a sobering conversation about why atrocities like the Holocaust can never be reduced to opinion or explained away, and why denying such evil ultimately erodes the very idea of right and wrong. Drawing on the works of C.S. Lewis, they wrestle with where moral truth comes from, why it exists beyond personal preference, and how abandoning it opens the door to history's darkest chapters. Today's conversation is about Lesson 1 of C.S. Lewis on Christianity taught by visiting Hillsdale professor Michael Ward. Take the course with us at no cost to you! Through his imaginative and invigorating style, Lewis answers these questions in ways that are compelling to those outside Christianity and energizing to those within the Christian faith. In this free, seven-lecture course, Professor Michael Ward—a leading scholar of C.S. Lewis—will explore Lewis's: argument for objective moral value in response to the rise of modern subjectivism; bittersweet path to conversion and the role of enjoyment in the Christian life; advice regarding the proper way to pray and read the Bible; teachings concerning the purpose of pain and how to confront suffering and loss; insights about the nature of heaven and hell. This course examines these fundamental topics not only through his classic works—including Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, and The Abolition of Man—but also through Lewis's personal experiences with doubt, conversion, suffering, grief, and joy. There are so many bittersweet flavors to our emotional landscape: our grief intermingled with relief, the tears of compassion when those who have hurt us express their regrets, the push and pull between our inner and outer worlds, the existential ache of not finding full expression in any world, the relief at expressing who we are aloud only to discover that we still only belong to ourselves, the lonely costs of success, the recognition that what was broken in our lifetime may not be made whole for hundreds more years, and a thousand more inner contradictions. Yosef's story is the story of a dreamer whose dreams came true. But even stories with the happiest endings come with an underlying ache. As we close Yosef's story in this week's Parsha, we analyze Yosef's emotional world through the astounding record of Yosef's tears, a central character in the Torah who is plainly recorded in verse after verse as weeping: sometimes in private, sometimes in public, sometimes so loudly that the entire land can hear. How do we make meaning of these tears? What story do they tell us about Yosef's experience of his life's triumphs and hardships, of the inner, emotional world that beat beneath this powerful figure, who rose from the pit to find astounding success as viceroy in Egypt, and as he released his restraint on his buried identity, expressed an emotional landscape that echoes the complexity of each of our own inner worlds?* * * * * * *To inquire about sponsorship & advertising opportunities, please email us at info@humanandholy.comTo support our work, visit humanandholy.com/sponsor.Find us on Instagram @humanandholy & subscribe to our channel to stay up to date on all our upcoming conversations ✨Human & Holy podcast is available on all podcast streaming platforms. On the 10th Nightmare Before Christmas… Palm Sunday is usually a day of hope and reflection, but in 1984, East New York faced a horror it would never forget. Families were at home, children played, and neighbors went about their day, but inside 1080 Liberty Avenue, everything changed. Ten lives were lost in a single, shocking act of violence. The house was ordinary, the people inside were ordinary, yet by the end of the day, the community would never be the same.
