Pause, slow down, and think about what you believe—about the world, yourself, humanity, and God. Ask yourself, “Why do I believe this?” “Where does this ‘truth' I'm believing come from?” Then, with diligence and patience, relentlessly seek the truth.
Part of my faith journey includes some unsound doctrine, a wrong way of believing, that damaged me. I fell for the manipulation of the “name it and claim it” theology, otherwise known as the “prosperity gospel.” Part of this theology is the belief that we can make God move according to our will instead of moving into God's will for our lives according to the authority of Scripture and His sovereignty.
Looking to the past can often feel like a tricky thing from our human perspective. Our past often consists of hurt and bad memories. When we look to the past, let us look at what God has done through and despite all the mistakes, all the pain, and all the hurt.
This week, Features Director Marjorie Alford speaks to Ian Young of Slow Riser about their recent release Midnight Talks. They discuss the birth and evolution of the project - including restructing from a trio to a duo and the pace change of creating through the pandemic - as well as the ins and outs of their live shows, and the truth in art of being a slow riser. "When Claire and I were talking about like overarching themes we landed on our own relationship to the night and how that changes over the years, how that changes depending on what time of year it was, how we feel mentally, all that stuff. So Midnight Talks is very much me trying to create a vignette of what it was to drive around small towns, growing up at night with my friends." - Ian Young Produced by Jack Deubner. The primary purpose of the church is to be on a mission to seek those who are lost and lead them to salvation that is found by faith in Christ alone. When we lose sight of that and become an inward-facing group that meets together to listen and discuss everyone else's need for Jesus, we become more like the Pharisees than the Son of Man, Jesus.

I began to question God. How can He be good? How can He love me and let me feel like this? What did I do to deserve this? I was so sick of the pain and unsure if God was good that I wondered if the devil is even that bad? I knew that Satan and the world could offer things that would bring me pleasure, but then the Holy Spirit that God placed inside of me reminded me that only God is good. Even so, the fact that I asked the question brought on guilt, shame, and doubt. I felt distant from God and unable to be saved by His grace and mercy...

One hard thing about being human and on this earth is, although we can know how wonderful our eternal home is, we still cling to this life and this world. This is an indicator that we are putting things, and often times people we love, above God. But when we keep our focus on our eternal home, on our Savior and Lord, we actually love and enjoy those things and people all the more.
